MOTHER Nature’s icy blast last week delivered right on time – the school holidays blessed with runs open and lifts turning. Falls Creek opened the Falls Express chair and Mouse Trap in the middle of last week and as the snow continued to fall a large part of the mountain was expected to be up and running in time for the first week of school holidays. The ski lift company’s Victoria Gregory said it looked amazing. “The village is white and is only open to skiing, walking and snowmobiles,”
she said late last week. “The forecast proved right for last week and by the weekend more runs will open up progressively, most likely Towers and Wombats Ramble ahead of more snow next week. “It looks like we will have a fair bit of terrain open for all the holidays. “The village is almost booked out from the second week of the Victorian school holidays so that is always a good sign.” Mt Hotham’s Michael Belfrage said the snow was knee deep in spots late last week.
“We opened Summit Trainer in the middle of the week and the plan is to have the Big D and Playground running for the weekend,” he said. “We’re optimistic with the forecast that we will continue to open up terrain ahead of the second week of the school holidays. “It is certainly a big step forward that last year when even though the school holidays were late we struggled with natural snowfalls.” But Falls Creek Ski Patrol manager Matt O’Keeffe told the paper that fol-
lowing a few simple instructions would make the school holiday ski trip just that bit more enjoyable. He says people need to slow down, take notice of signs and with young kids – rug up. Mt Hotham’s head of ski school Nigel Mills is reminding skiers and boarders of all abilities to take advantage of a lesson. “As instructors we constantly train ourselves to get better,” he said. “The better you are the more fun you have.”

WITH 1000s of people set to flock to the snowfields over the following weeks care and safety on slopes becomes even more paramount. Not only are the school holidays one of the busiest times of the season but limited snow cover early in the season means more people will be packed into a smaller skiable area. Falls Creek Ski Patrol manager Matt O’Keeffe says following a few simple instructions is the way to enjoy your snow trip. “Early in the season the biggest tip from us is for people to really take it easy because we don’t have a lot of runs open and with school holidays there are a lot of families and kids around,� he said. “On some of the runs it can get quite congested and the last thing we want is collisions particularly with children so if people can just slow down and be extra cautious when they see mum and dad and the kids it would be appreciated.� O’Keeffe said adhering to signs about where to and where not to ski was also important. “Areas are typically closed for a reason because it’s not safe for people to be there,� he said. “Although with fresh snow the area might look like bushes and rocks are covered most of the time

A TOP of 0 degrees Celsius in alpine areas is a pretty regular occurrence during the winter months. But that figure doesn’t completely describe what is going on. When you add the effects of the wind and how much moisture is in the air, it can feel quite different to the actual temperature. Is it a 0 degrees C that feels just like that, or do we need to seriously rug up because it will actually be much colder? Brisbane in the summer can have an air temperature of 30C, but it feels like 35C thanks to the humidity. We have the opposite effect here in the mountains. And it is mostly dependent on how strong the wind is. it’s not and that’s why we’ll close these areas. “We don’t want to remove a person’s lift pass but if people ignore our closures that is a possibility. “If a person blows through a closed area and hits a
rock just under the surface of the snow or their ski or snowboard goes under a shrub they can get pretty badly injured so respecting our closures will keep everyone safe.� In terms of staying
protected from the elements Mr O’Keeffe said rug up in cold conditions and when there are strong winds blowing while applying sunscreen is essential not only when the sun is out but when cloudy and overcast too.
And one final tip from the ski patroller is hit the slopes bright and early before the mad rush later in the day. “Generally there are less people out riding early in the morning and of course that’s when the snow is at its best.�

YOU don’t get much more extreme than this. Flown in by helicopter to the peak of a remote mountain,with kilometres of vertical, untracked descent, competing against some of the world’s best. It’s the kind of challenge Falls Creek skier Tom Costa has dreamed of, and will make a reality at the end of this month. The former World Cup mogulist will carry the hopes of his nation, again, in the World Heli Challenge in New Zealand.
Some 60 of the best skiers and snowboarders from around the world will battle it out - all trying to pick the best line amid unforgiving back country terrain deep in the South Island’s wilderness. “I have wanted to give this type of event a crack for years and this year with the help of my sponsors, Central Snowsports and Deep Powder Tours, I am making it happen,� Costa said. Born and raised at the base of Falls Creek, in Mt Beauty, Costa and his three brothers learnt to ski young - and fast. Adrian and Paul Costa represented Australia at the Winter Olympic Games
and Tom also competed for his country in freestyle on the World Cup circuit, and at two world championships. “I guess this freeskiing is just a natural progression,� the 32 year old said. “I’ve had the opportunity to ski around the world and be exposed to some pretty extreme terrain..and I just love the challenge.� But this is his first event. “It’s hard to say how I will fare, but I am definitely very excited about representing my home resort of Falls Creek, and you can bet I will be giving it my very best shot,� he said.
“Obviously this sort of event is not easy to train for, especially in Australia, but the plan is to do as much backcountry skiing as possible and try to get comfortable in the big mountain arena. “Weather permitting, I hope to spend some time on Mt McKay with local skiing legend Steve Lee on his new backcountry tours.� Peaks with 50 degree pitches, 80 to 100 foot drops, open bowls, deep snow and rocky chutes will test every ounce of Costa’s skill and endurance. First time on the snow or a seasoned regular it really doesn’t matter
Ready for one of life’s best lessons WE were looking for someone who could give us the good oil on learning to ski and snowboard and after spending the past 32 years in a state of perpetual winter we couldn’t have done better than talk to Mt Hotham’s Nigel Mills. The director of Hotham’s Ski & Ride School “got the bug” in 1980 and hasn’t seen a summer since. Why should kids get a lesson when they first come for a skiing or boarding holiday? Apart from the fun factor of being with kids their age, they will improve at a faster rate and learn about being safe in our mountain environment. It is also a great time for the parents to go skiing or boarding and not have to worry about their kids. Say my son and daughter have been on the snow for a couple of seasons, are capable skiers – should they get a lesson? No matter how good you are the answer is yes. As instructors we constantly train ourselves to get better. The better you are the more fun you have. With young children is it better to break lessons up – for instance two ½ days compared to a whole day in ski school? All parents know their own children’s capabilities so it may be an individual decision, however, if they are physically capable they should

maximise their time on the snow. What is the break-up of kids wanting to learn skiing and boarding? Is there an age limit, where perhaps motor skills are better suited to one or the other? Good question. We still have about an 80/20 split of children skiing versus snowboarding, however, once they are seven years of age we take them into our group lessons. Younger kids generally are better served co-ordination wise having skis on and being able to separate their feet. We do, however, get the little guy or girl who wants to rip on a snowboard and as such we have a Riglets Private lesson designed just for these guys/girls. This is a private lesson (90 minutes) which uses terrain based learning where they are on a specially designed board and scoot around on our especially designed terrain under the guidance of one of our highlytrained snowboard staff members. I’m coming to Mt Hotham for the first time with the kids – where do I start? Start at the ticket office and get your products sorted out. From there you will need to get your rental equipment and then be at the Big D in time for the kids’ lessons (Might Mites 3 to 5-year-olds start from 8.30am and our Kids Klub 6 to 14year olds start from 9.15am). Remember snowboarding lessons are from 7 to 14-year-old for kids.
HOTHAM SHUTTLE A FREE VicRoads shuttle bus will operate at Mt Hotham this winter. The road’s authority says the bright orange “Travel Happy” themed bus is a reminder for motorists that respectfully sharing the road allows everyone to have a safe and positive experience. VicRoads director of North Eastern Region, Bryan Sherritt said while holidaymakers carve up the slopes, they would also be carving out snow on the
roads at Mount Hotham to make driving safer and easier for motorists. “We expect to clear approximately 82km of the Great Alpine Road from Harrietville to Omeo and snow clearing and ice treatment will take place as required 24 hours a day so our team will be very visible in the area,” Mr Sherritt said. Drivers are encouraged to visit traffic.vicroads.vic.gov.au to check for any issues on their planned routes.

Healing old wounds By JUSTIN JENVEY AFTER blowing out a knee in a horrific accident in Mt Hotham’s backcountry in 2012 Drew Jolowicz didn’t know if he would ski again. But after multiple surgeries and 18 months of rehab Jolowicz took to the slopes again and now two years later is one of Hotham’s ambassadors. While images of Jolowicz skiing have been used by Hotham marketing in the past he is now officially one of the ‘faces of the mountain’, joining Olympians Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullen, Greta Small and Katya Crema as a resort ambassador. “Growing up in Bright and skiing at Hotham all my life it’s nice to be given that tag and represent the mountain,” Jolowicz said. “To be included alongside the other three ambassadors is pretty cool too, especially when I didn’t know if I would ski again after landing a jump awkwardly and blowing my knee to pieces in 2012. “That was on the Drift Cliffs which is outside the resort boundaries and we were actually doing a photo shoot at the time. “I ruptured my ACL, PCL, MCL and tore both meniscus’ and it was a bit of touch and go as to whether I was going to keep my leg for the first week or so.
Luckily I had a brilliant surgeon reconstruct my entire knee and after four surgeries and 18 months of rehab I was cleared to ski again. - DREW JOLOWICZ “Luckily I had a brilliant surgeon reconstruct my entire knee and after four surgeries and 18 months of rehab I was cleared to ski again.” After a tentative return to the slopes when the 2014 winter came around Jolowicz is now back in full flight doing what he loves albeit with a bit more caution. “I tend to look for smoother lines and better snow nowadays,” he said. “Skiing aggressively is still the goal, but I definitely place a greater emphasis on safety and being able to participate for years to come. “Becoming a parent has also changed my mindset, knowing when to push it or tone it down is important.” The 33-year-old who is a painter for nine months of the year began skiing when he was four and was a member of the Hotham Race Club before switching to freestyle skiing.

MULTIPLE sclerosis sufferer Bobby Bajram will step up his preparations for climbing Mt Everest during the Falls Creek winter. The Falls Creek Resort ambassador will look to summit the world’s highest mountain next year and only after attempting to reach the South Col, just below Mt Everest in September. Bajram is hoping to be the first MS sufferer to summit the monster mountain. His story has been one of constant challenges. Bajram is the youngest person to be diagnosed with MS in Australia. At the age of 13 he was legally blind and in a wheelchair. After spending five years in and out of blindness, he spent a further nine years intermittently confined to a wheelchair and for the rest of his life will rely on a walking stick during the ongoing relapses of MS. Now Bajram has 60-70 per
cent of his vision and has his weight down to 81kg after at one stage weighing almost double that. He has been visiting Falls Creek during the summer and winter months over the past three years to train for his epic trip. “Falls Creek terrain and altitude is the ideal location for me to prepare for my treks,� he said. “The employees and locals are really welcoming and are like family.� Falls Creek Resort Management chief executive Stuart Smythe said Bajram had been appointed an honorary ambassador for the resort. “This will help him share his story and more importantly to assist him with his altitude training in the lead up to his assault on Everest,� he said. “Bobby has an indomitable spirit, one that has seen him deal with the challenges of MS on a daily basis. His focus and energy on showing others how this disease is not an impediment
to conquering your dreams is inspirational, to all. “Falls Creek is proud to be able to assist Bobby in his training. It is a ‘whole of mountain’ effort, with many local businesses, volunteers and the general public supporting and encouraging him. “Sir Edmund Hillary said ‘it is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves’ ‌ Bobby has proven his ability to conquer adversity in the form of MS. He is now setting his ambition a little bit higher.â€? Falls Creek Resort Management’s Jo Prothero said in order to take his training up a step, in preparation for his trip to the South Col in September, Disabled Wintersport Australia volunteers will be offering guided support when Bajram was in Falls Creek training. “The volunteers will trek with Bobby over the coming months to provide support and ensure he is in the best shape possible to take on his next challenge,â€? she said. “In October 2015, Bobby
took on Mera Peak, at 6461m this is the next of the smaller Nepal Himalaya peaks, and has previously climbed Kala Patthar. “All going to plan Bobby plans to summit Mt Everest in 2017.� Prothero said Bajram had set himself the task of reaching the peak of Mt Everest to show that the disease does not rule his life and also to raise disability awareness and encourage those with disabilities to take action in order to improve themselves. “Bobby’s quest is to raise awareness and funds for people with disabilities and their careers,� she said. “Importantly Bobby wants to show that Multiple Sclerosis doesn’t rule his life and to encourage others with disabilities to take action in order to improve their quality of life. “He also aims to put together a $100 million trust fund for people with disabilities and various support groups to give them the ATTITUDE WITH ALTITUDE: Bobby Bajram loads assistance and care they regularly up on the carbs at elk restaurant in Falls Creek. need.�

Hitting the downhill slope indoors A NEW downhill opened at Mt Hotham last week but you won’t find it listed on any trail map. Hotham 365, a play on the days of the year, is an initiative of the resort management board and is tucked away in a shed at Stop 10 on the snow bus. The only one of its kind in Australia is seen as an add-on to the mountain ski experience, opening on nights that don’t clash with traditional night skiing in the resort. But most significantly Hotham 365 will be used as a training

ground for people with a disability who are looking to take up skiing, and their guides. Disabled Wintersports Australia man on the mountain Phil Knight said it opened up a whole new world of opportunities for their members. “DWA will be investigating how best the weather proofed ski slope will be able to be used by our members and for guide training over the coming months,” he said. “For those of our members coming to the snow for the first time there is a series of factors that
they need to come to terms with – the snow is one aspect, adaptive equipment, altitude, getting on and off lifts, exposed to the elements. “There is enough of a commonality with the indoor slope to replicate the skiing experience without having to battle the elements or tackling getting on and off lifts – this is a way of easing people into the skiing experience, taking it one step at a time. “We have some 900 people who are part of Disabled Wintersports Australia, 200 of those are guides.
“About 35 of those guides are at Mt Hotham and there is no secret of the fact that we want to grow that number and I believe that this slope, the only one of its kind at ski resorts in this country, will help and encourage that training. “Hotham has been incredibly supportive of our organisation – last year launching another first Disability Visitors Guide and now Hotham 365 that will allow us to train our athletes and volunteers year-round and without being weather dependent.”
THE evolution of Dinner Plain has been illustrated in a book set to hit the shelves in the coming weeks. Dinner Plain – History of the Alpine Village was written and self-published by Malcolm McPherson who has called the village home for the past 20 years. The release of the book coincides with the 30th anniversary of the official opening of Dinner Plain in 1986. The 48-page book describes the use of the land by squatters from the 1850s and the eventual selection purchase by Omeo cattleman Tom McNamara in 1915 before the surge in popularity of skiing at Mt Hotham lead to the village’s development. Mr McPherson worked on the book for the past five months after being approached about the idea. “I did a book about skiing on Mt Hotham about a decade ago and suppose with that background a number of people asked me if I would consider writing the history of Dinner Plain,” he said. “It’s a well-illustrated book and the first few chapters give readers a sense of how land was being used outside of winter for cattle grazing. “It explores the years leading up to the development of the village and Peter McIntyre’s work in designing it with a mix of accommodation, cross country trails and a beginners slope with ski tow. “And then of course it looks at the present day and the most recent additions to the village with investments in night skiing and snowmaking.” Mr McPherson spent his working life in the mining and energy industries in Western Australia before moving to Dinner Plain upon his retirement. He will have 500 copies of Dinner Plain History of the Alpine Village printed. Copies will be available from the second week of July at Brandy Creek Supermarket in Dinner Plain and at the Visitor Information Centre in Bright.

Cross Country targets “Fast & Female” skiers to take on the enduro sports PROVING that cross country skiing rocks as a winter sport, Fast & Female Falls Creek on Sunday, July 3 is all about fun, fitness and girl power on the snow. Led by Australia’s best female cross country skiers, the event is big on fun and fitness, with lots of pink and great music for girls aged 8-19 years, of all skiing abilities
and experience. And it’s not just the young girls who get to have all the fun, there is also a special 19+ group for ladies who want to improve their skiing, and be part of the ‘Pink on Piste’ experience. Fast & Female ambassadors, such as threetime Winter Olympian Esther Bottomley and Sochi teammate Aimee Watson, will teach
a range of ski skills through dynamic and engaging sports based events. Structured around skill-based stations, the program includes development of confidence in downhill techniques, laser biathlon, going fast and having fun on skis. Kat Paul, Fast and Female ambassador, explained that cross country skiing is a lifestyle
sport, that’s fun, beautiful and good for your health. “It’s easy to learn and offers something for everyone. Whether it’s heading out on the cross country trails for a family picnic in the snow or racing in the Kangaroo Hoppet, cross country skiing is my favourite winter sport,” she said. ‘Fast & Female’ was
founded in 2005 by Canadian Olympic Cross Country Skier Chandra Crawford and her team mates. Following the success of the organisation in Canada, the US and the inaugural Australian event in 2012, Fast and Female Australia Inc was set up in 2013. Fast and Female hopes to increase the attraction,
retention and success rate of female athletes in crosscountry skiing, biathlon and summer enduro-sports. Australia’s only on snow biathlon centre will host the best in the country this month
Alpine elite shooting for the national team MOUNT Hotham will be biathlon central during July with plans for elite training camps and racing. From July 2, Australian Biathlon will run the biggest national camp in a decade at Whiskey Flat, home of the only biathlon range in Australia, with participants from three different states. Australian Biathlon’s Emma
Flanagan said the first group is for high performance or expert masters athletes and will be under the guidance of international coach Luca Bormolini, “These athletes include Australia’s highest ranked male athlete Damon Morton, 19, and his younger sister Darcie, 16, who was Australia’s woman biathlete
at the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Norway last February,” she said. “This second group is led by director of sport/coach Cameron Morton (father of Damon and Darcie), who is also a 2006 Winter Olympian. “This ‘Future Stars’ stream has participants newer to biathlon and aged from six to 16.
“Those under-12 will be training with special laser training systems, which allow participants too young to use firearms to learn the principles of marksmanship. “There is a series of fun laser events on the weekend of July 2 and 3, with training in the morning followed by fun races from 1pm.”
Flanagan said July 9 is the date for the inaugural NSW Branch Championship Sprint Races, and the day after the East Gippsland Open Championship Races. “These are fun races, for both laser and regular .22 calibre competitors,” she said. “On Friday, July 22 there will be the NSW Branch Super Sprint Races, a warm up event
for the Victorian Biathlon Championships, which are selection events for those aiming to represent Australia overseas. “The weekend will have an international flavour with an individual (or “distance”) event on the Saturday and a sprint on the Sunday including overseas visitors from Italy and the US.”

By BRAD WORRALL JAKE Greaves wanted a Husky because they were the closest dog he could own to a wolf. Now he has 45 of them. But far from being a circling wolf pack, this pack of canines is born to run. Greaves said given the chance they would run all day. The pack is part of the Howling Husky sled dog tours that operate from Crisps Hut at Dinner Plain and Wire Plain Hut at Mt Hotham throughout the winter. Purpose-built wheel
buggies mean snow is an added bonus. “I don’t know how it got to this point – I wanted a wolf, ended up with a Husky, joined the Victorian Husky Club, started racing and came back up here to live at Swifts Creek year round in 2014,” Greaves said. “They love it in the snow, when they are running. “My very first Husky, Koda, is 11 and still running. “Out of the 45 dogs only six don’t run, there are teams of eight dogs each at Hotham and Dinner Plain, while we
also have sled dog tours at Mt Baw Baw.” Greaves said sled dog tours were a huge hit on the mountain. “I think we have at least one booking for every day right up until the end of the season,” he said. “We treat them as pets so one of the highlights for people on a tour is when we finish and they get to play with the dogs, we even have regular visitors who just come down to give the dogs a pat.” Greaves said the sled dog tours are demanding on the
Huskies and those driving. “We can generally take two people at a time, three if it’s young kids – the golden rule is the weight limit of 160kg,” he said. “But we are at the back and while we might jump on when it’s going downhill to control the brakes, most of the time we are running or skating alongside the sled on the flats and particularly uphill. “It’s just great fun – for us out there in the snow and the smiles on the faces of the people on the ride are priceless.”

It’s about family and a bit of “me” By ABBEY JONES A FAMILY holiday to the snow with the kids is all about striking the right balance between your ‘me’ time and the treasured family time. Here are a few tips on making the most of your Falls Creek snow experience with kids.
SKI SCHOOL If you’re planning on skiing with the kids at the snow and value your sanity then ski school is a must. You get some time to enjoy the mountain or do an adult lesson while the kids are taken care of by qualified instructors who make learning to ski a blast for your little ones who may well soon be tearing past you on the ski home. For the three to six-year-olds there is the Snowclub and for those older than six there is junior workshop. With half and full day options available, lunch and snacks are taken care of so no need to worry about packing a lunchbox. There are some rules so check with Ski School.

Big Hill Mountain Bike Park with a wide range of high quality trails from beginner to world class, cross country to downhill, this park has it all. In total 50km of trails across 84 different runs. Don’t be put off because we’re in the middle of winter, these tracks handle wet weather extremely well. In terms of XC trail BHMBP has plenty. You can test yourself against the winding national trails but we recommend Bananarama one of the most popular among locals. The downhill trails are natural, raw and exciting. You won’t find big tabletops or head high berms, however, you’ll find gnarly rock gardens, steep shoots, off camber technical sections and much more. What to ride, we’ll leave that up to you.

You have two choices in Active Flight or Alpine Paragliding to soar like an eagle but whoever you choose you’ll be flying with fully trained and qualified tandem pilots. Your experience starts at the Mystic Landing Paddock just outside of Bright on the road to Wandiligong where you will meet your pilot before starting the journey up Mystic Hill.
