IT’S A JEEP:Big, bold and obviously a Jeep with all that means in the way of a tough ride, the latest Jeep Cherokee is selling its wheels off.

Jeep Cherokee gets diesel option W

ith the unthinkable happening – Jeep Grand Cherokee outselling Toyota’s Prado – Jeep has thrown another weapon at the lucrative grey nomad towing market in the form of the new Cherokee Limited turbo-diesel.

The Cherokee is Grand Cherokee’s smaller sibling and the new diesel Cherokee carries a towing capacity of almost 2.4 tonnes – ideal for those who want to tow camper trailers or caravans under two tonnes, with the fuel consumption benefits that come with diesel engines.

BY MURRAY HUBBARD Before adding any weight to the towbar Jeep claim the new Cherokee Limited 2.0-litre turbo diesel has an officially measured combined fuel consumption of just 5.8 litres per 100 km.

The vehicle comes only in the Limited luxury trim and boasts a nine-speed auto transmission and is fitted with Jeep’s latest off-road technology, Active Drive II 4WD with a low range transfer box.

The only downside is that the vehicle

comes with the SUV-style body fitted to 2WD and AWD Cherokee models, rather than the Cherokee Trail Hawk body that has shorter overhangs for off-road work.

If you are not into rock-hopping this body style will not be of any concern.

Jeep launched the new Cherokee Limited near Bright in Northern Victoria on a combination of tarmac and stunning, but not difficult, bush trails around Mt Porepunkah.

The 2.0-litre turbo-diesel comes courtesy of Alfa Romeo’s Giulietta – that platform on

which the Cherokee is based – even though the Cherokee and Giulietta could never be confused for distant cousins.

This connection comes via Fiat’s ownership of the Jeep brand.

Our first driving impressions of the Cherokee Limited diesel are that this is a great package.

The 2.0-litre turbo diesel belts out 350 Nm of torque and combined with the nine-speed auto feels fairly potent and particularly unstressed.

Renault Twizy: is it the right fit for busy capital cities?

R

enault Twizy is a tiny two-seat car powered by electricity that doesn’t take up much road space.

Indeed Twizy’s footprint isn’t much bigger than that of a large motorbike and you can park two, sometimes three, into a typical parking space in a high-rise building or shopping centre.

As a real bonus, no matter how claustrophobic these carparks are Twizy doesn’t add exhaust fumes to the air you’re breathing.

Twizy can turn around in not much more than its own length - on a recent trip to Paris I saw one winding its way around one of the huge, completely clogged roundabouts that are a sad feature of that otherwise beautiful city.

On the road – actually at a driver training facility near Melbourne as the radical Renault can’t be registered in Australia yet – we loved

the tiny Twizy.

Like all electric cars it has excellent acceleration the moment you hit the pedal.

It zips around corners with plenty of verve, brakes hard (adding electricity to the batteries when doing so), has exceptional visibility to the front and side and hums along with little noise.

The driver is held in place by an unusual four-point seatbelt.

You slip the right-hand belt over your arm, then put the belt on the left, which is a normal lap-sash unit, over the right-side belt.

It sounds complicated, but is really easy in reality.

The rear seat passenger has a conventional lap-sash belt. There’s not a lot of space in the back there and you sit with your legs on either side of the driver’s seat. The rear seat base can be turned upside down to provide a lockable box.

There are two gloveboxes on the dash, but only one is lockable,

that are capable of taking purses, wallets, phones, small tablet computers and the like.

Note, however, that maximum payload is listed as just 115 kg.

Believe it or not the doors are an optional extra, as are the sunroof and the alloy wheels (pictured).

Slide in clear plastic panels can be fitted as basic windows.

But as there are no handles on the outside of the doors (don’t you just love these quirky French folks?) entry would mean having to remove one of these windows.

Renault Twizy has a 13 kW electric motor running from a lithium-ion battery.

This charges from ‘empty’ in about 3.5 hours using a normal 10 amp household power point.

Range is claimed to be 70 to 80 kilometres.

Depending on the time of day, and the deal you’ve done with your electricity supplier, a complete charge will cost from $2 to $5.

Is this the future of travel in our big cities?

In Europe almost certainly, if the Renault Twizy is a success, and 14,000 have been sold since it was launched in March 2012, others will come up with competing designs.

In Australia the Twizy would work well in the capital cities, where more and more high-rise apartments are being built, seemingly by the day.

However, while Twizy is welcomed by governments in Europe and buyers are given encouragement in various ways, nothing – repeat nothing – is being done by Australian governments to encourage low-emission vehicles.

There’s still denial on climate change by some of Australia’s senior politicians, so potential buyers downunder miss out on sales tax savings, cheaper registration, free parking, the ability to drive in transit lanes, and numerous other things offered in more mature countries.

I find that embarrassing.

Despite trying we could not detect any turbo lag on or off-road and the engine/transmission was willing both in acceleration and at passing speeds.

This transmission helps the vehicle to achieve two ends: economy and power on tap when required.

In normal running the diesel Cherokee uses 2WD with the industry-first rear axle disconnected until the need for 4WD is necessary.

This means greater fuel economy as the rear wheels are not being driven unless required.

The transfer between 2WD and 4WD is seamless as far as the driver is concerned with no hint of torque transfer.

Jeep Cherokee Limited diesel comes standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery with heated front seats, front and rear parking sensors with reversing camera, nine-speaker surround system and Uconnect 8.4-inch touchscreen with navigation.

Like the rest of the new Cherokee range the Limited diesel has a five-star ANCAP safety rating.

It comes standard with seven airbags and stability control, traction control and should you wish to upgrade even further to the latest safety innovations Forward Collision Warning-Plus, park assist, adaptive cruise control, land departure warning, blind spot monitoring and rear cross path detection are all optional.

The Limited diesel Cherokee completes the new Cherokee stable that includes Cherokee Sport with a 2.4 litre petrol engine and Longitude, Limited and Trail Hawk, all with Jeep’s 3.2-litre petrol Pentastar V6 engine.

The Cherokee line-up is now a mixture of 2WD, AWD and 4WD options. Sport is 2WD only, Longitude and Limiter are AWD SUVs with no low range transfer box, while Trail Hawk is a 4WD with low range and a body style better suited to off-road work and fun with reduced overhangs.

With its 2393 kg towing capacity, low range option and luxury trim the new Jeep Cherokee Limited diesel looks to be aimed squarely at those towing smaller vans and camper trailers.
