Holden adds sedan to Astra range

By EWAN KENNEDY HOLDEN has added a four-door Astra sedan variant to join the Astra hatch that ZDV ODXQFKHG LQ 'HFHPEHU $ VWDWLRQ wagon will be added to the range later this year.

7KLV FDU PDUNHW VHJPHQW LV H[WUHPHO\ SULFH VHQVLWLYH LQ $XVWUDOLD WR WKH H[WHQW WKDW prices of the Astra hatch had to be reduced within months of it going on sale. Even $1500 can make all the difference and hatch sales are noticeably higher now than in the early days.

GM-Holden has learned its lesson and $VWUD VHGDQ SULFHV VWDUW DW DQG UXQ WKURXJK WR 2Q URDG FRVWV +DYH WR be factored in, however, some pretty good driveaway deals are being offered during the initial weeks, possibly months, to get the Astra established.

Styling of the new Astra sedan is neat and tidy, but doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really break any new ground. This is a smart move as cars in this class tend to be purchased by sensible buyers who donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want something that may look out of date in a few years, and depreciate savagely as a result.

Holden Astra is built on an all-new vehicle modular architecture that features up to NJ ZHLJKW UHGXFWLRQ IURP WKH PRGHO LW supersedes. This adds performance at the same time as fuel consumption decreases.

The cars we tested certainly felt spritely, more about that in the Driving section of this report.

is very much a global organisation these days, indeed it has been for many decades.

Holden buyers may not be aware that cars from the Korean marques, Kia and Hyundai, have been sitting high in the quality stakes, often outshining Europeans. The build quality of the cars we tested at the launch was impressively good.

Holden was involved in many areas from the earliest days of the new Astra design.

And it shows, this small-medium sedan really did have the sort of feel on the road in its steering and ride Commodore buyers will recognise.

On-centre steering feel has been softened a little to make it less sensitive in the straight ahead position. This makes it suited to our rougher than average roads. Once you turn the wheel the feel comes in early and is nicely direct. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s seldom any need to correct it mid corner unless you hit rougher than average bumps and dips.

Comfort wise, the suspension is generally SURYHG VXSSOH +RZHYHU WKH VW\OLVK ORZ SUR²OH tyres on the upmarket Astra models had a ride that wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t as good as on the lower grades.

There was some road roar on coarse-chip VXUIDFHV IURP WKH ORZ SUR²OH W\UHV 7R LWV credit Holden took us over some pretty harsh surfaces during the launch program out of Coolangatta airport and in the hinterland of Queensland and Northern NSW. The 1.4-litre turbo engine is a lively little unit thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a real pleasure to sit behind.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the inevitable turbo lag, but once that has passed, which doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take long, there is plenty of torque to provide good hill climbing and to prompt overtaking.

Barina with inside and out enhancements

By EWAN KENNEDY HOLDEN is pushing hard on all fronts in an attempt to prove it will continue as a major automotive player in Australia after local factories are shut down in October.

Thus the recent updating of the smallest car in the Holden range, the Barina. We have just spent a pleasant week in the latest HGLWLRQ RI D FDU WKDW ²UVW ZHQW RQ VDOH KHUH LQ the mid 1980s.

With a price tag from just $14,990 the latest Barina is astonishingly cheap. Thirty years ago a 1987 Barina with bare-boned VSHFL²FDWLRQV ZDV SULFHG DW DQG Holden proudly boasted that the latest model had â&#x20AC;¦ wait for it â&#x20AC;¦ an AM / FM radio with four speakers as standard. )RU WKH VHDVRQ +ROGHQ %DULQD received a facelift and tail-tuck, interior enhancements, an upgraded infotainment system and added safety features. %DULQD LV VROG RQO\ DV D ²YH GRRU hatchback. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s offered in two variants: LS and LT. The Barina LS has 16-inch alloy wheels and automatic headlamps. The LT gets 17-inch alloys, push button locking and engine start / stop, leather trimmed steering wheel, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Sportecâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; seat trim and heated front seats.

Our test car was a cute little Barina LS with D ²YH VSHHG PDQXDO JHDUER[ 6RXQGV EDVLF" It is in price but far from basic in reality.

Tall and chubby, with a fair degree of cheekiness in its shape the Holden Barina follows GMâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s latest styling theme centred around a double-deck grille. $OOR\ ZKHHOV DUH ²WWHG WR DOO %DULQDV DQG VLW

Barina has plenty of room for the front seat occupants. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decent legroom for those in the back, though itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s better suited to two

adults than three. Mum, dad and three kids VKRXOG ²QG LW ZRUNLQJ EHDXWLIXOO\ Storage includes pockets on both sides of the centre stack and upper instrument panel for smaller items.

The days when Holden was almost legendary downunder are gone. It now has to show Australians that it can continue to be a major part of GM globally in design, engineering and technology. Cars like the Barina and Astra certainly make a strong point.
