Skoda Superb, the name says it all

The large Superb sedan appears almost majestic. It brings the design language of the Skoda VisionC to fruition with its assurance, dynamic elegance, balanced proportions and a striking appeal.

The trademark Skoda grille is home to a brand logo linking it to the bonnet.

Bi-xenon headlights with adaptive front light system, including integrated headlamp washers and daytime running OLJKWV Âł DQN WKH UDGLDWRU Front fog lights, with cornering function, take up similar positions on

either side of a total-width air intake below.

Fog lamps are repeated at the rear.

Side on, the Superb presents a solid appearance with lines usually found in cars of premium class – and with price tags to match.

The sedan sits on Pegasus anthracite 18-inch alloy wheels, a perfect foil to the VSDULQJO\ Âł DUHG ZKHHO DUFKHV Inside, the story is one of extra space, the result of longer wheelbase and wider track over its predecessor.

Skoda suggests the feel-good factor for occupants can be boosted by the addition of an optional electric panoramic sunroof.

A completely new top-shelf threezone air conditioning system ensures an optimal temperature and the best air quality.

By DEREK OGDEN THE Subaru Levorg is a hybrid of sorts; not in petrol-electric power terms but in character.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s part sports machine, part sensible family station wagon.

A combination thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s likely to appeal to many who enjoy their driving.

Levorg is powered by the 197 kW four-cylinder turbocharged engine found in the sporty WRX and in practicality and size is a descendant of the Liberty GT wagon.

Available exclusively with Subaruâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Lineartronic continuously variable transmission, it comes basically in two variants - 2.0GT and 2.0GT-S. In Australia, however, a third version WKH *7 6 6SHF % LV D ORFDO ² W option adding performance parts from the Subaru Tecnica International stable.

These include an STI shift knob; front, side and rear side under spoilers; STI 18-inch black alloy wheels; front tower bar; red push-button start and roof rear spoiler. /HYRUJ LV SULFHG IURP IRU WKH *7 IRU WKH *7 6 DQG IRU WKH *7 6 6SHF % WKH last being the test vehicle.

Levorg exhibits the automobile equivalent of human body piercing, its craggy face showing off with bright bits poking out all over the place â&#x20AC;&#x201C; from silver headlamp surrounds to front indicators and foglight chromestyle openings.

Large door mirrors make it easy to cut driver blind spots, their shape helps minimise wind noise.

Two instrument gauges directly in front of the driver feature a sporty design with a 3D effect, satin rings and cool blue illumination highlighting their precision.

Separating the gauges is a colour LCD offering the driver useful stats including those from the odometer, trip meter, EyeSight operating status, ECO gauge and SI-Drive and High Beam Assist status, plus warnings.

Drivers can toggle between functions using steering wheel-mounted switches.

Subaru Levorg has as many screens â&#x20AC;&#x201C; four â&#x20AC;&#x201C; as a suburban multiplex, so thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always a mass of information on hand.

A 4.3-inch multifunction display in the central dashboard offers a wide variety of information including passenger seatbelt warning, air-con operation, calendar, fuel economy screen, eco assessment screen, preventative safety, clock and outside temperature.

Settings can be changed from both front passenger and driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s seats.

For the mechanically curious, above this is a boost display showing positive/negative pressure, accelerator angle, boost pressure, boost pressure peak value in analogue or digital formats.

Other screens display help driving economy via the Eco-driving assist display.

A safety drive display showing how the Vehicle Dynamics Control is operating, a Self-check display indicating the status of car maintenance and Information display warnings on external conditions to support safe driving.

There is even the ability to set reminders for anniversaries, birthdays and maintenance timing.

The displays can be changed or turned off as preferred.

Every Levorg has dual zone automatic: climate control. Passengers in the back have reclining split / fold rear seats.

Bluetooth with voice control, phone and audio streaming, USB, AUX, two SD card slots and CD player with eight speakers are on hand, as is a tablet holder for rear passengers.

The entry-level test car, the Superb 2.0-litre 160TSI turbo-petrol DSG automatic sedan, delivers 162 kW of power at 6200 rpm and 350 Nm of torque between a broad band of 1500 to 4400 revs.

A six-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission sends power to the front wheels.

The new Superb employs a level of safety not previously seen in this segment.

Standard features include electronic stability control with multi-collision braking; front assist with city emergency brake; rear-view camera; fatigue detection; passenger protect assist; electronic tyre pressure monitor; nine airbags; ² YH WKUHH SRLQW DXWRPDWLF VHDW EHOWV ZLWK fastening alerts; Bi-Xenon headlights; front and rear parking sensors, as well as safety headrests.

The Skoda Superb sedan was instantly likeable as I settled into the driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s seat, doors closing behind me with a reassuring clunk.

No tinny note here.

The free-spinning turbocharged petrol engine has the Superb sprinting off the mark and up to 100 kilometres an hour in a claimed seven seconds.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not the time at which this is achieved that appeals but more the smoothness in operation of the six-speed double-clutch automatic transmission.

The Superb sedan is a hatchback with a voluminous 625-litre luggage space.

The low loading lip makes for easy loading.
