Ford Mondeo wagon with Euro styling IN an interesting twist Ford and Holden have decided to go in different directions with their post-Commodore and post-Falcon largest passenger cars.

While Holden has chosen to re-badge its Insignia model as Commodore, Ford has opted to drop the Falcon name altogether and retain the Mondeo moniker.

With Commodore still being built locally it’s too early to say whether Holden buyers will switch en-masse to the Insignia (or NG, for next-generation, Commodore) but Ford’s strategy seems to be working with Mondeo sales booming both from downsizing exFalcon buyers as well as those migrating from other brands in the medium to large car class.

By ALISTAIR KENNEDY Although Mondeo has been around for a quarter of a century the dominance of the Falcon in Australia meant that it’s never been much more than a bit player.

The current, fourth generation, Mondeo arrived here in April 2015 and was given a minor upgrade in April 2017.

MODELS Passenger car station wagons have become something of a rarity since the start of the SUV boom but it is available as one of the two Mondeo body options. Unusually the other is D ² YH GRRU KDWFKEDFN UDWKHU WKDQ D sedan.

There are three variants: Ambiente,

Trend and Titanium with prices ranging from $33,190 for a 2.0-litre petrol Ambiente hatch through to $49,840 for our test car, the 2.0-litre Titanium diesel wagon.

STYLING Mondeo hatch has coupe-like styling.

Luggage capacity is 488 litres when loaded up to the retractable blind, 712 litres when stacked to the roof and 1585 litres with the rear seatbacks folded and loaded to the roof.

INTERIOR Our test car Titanium wagon has a powered sunroof which may affect the available front headroom for taller drivers. We found it necessary to drop the driver’s seat height to its lower limit, not something that we prefer. Otherwise interior space is good with reasonable rear leg and headroom.

Mazda CX-5 LV VLJQL²FDQWO\ EHWWHU

By EWAN KENNEDY MAZDA CX-5 has been a hit in Australia VLQFH LW DUULYHG KHUH MXVW RYHU ²YH \HDUV ago. Now the second generation has been introduced. It features interesting style, improvements to the powertrains and uprated technology.

A new Touring model has been added to the CX-5 range. Sitting between the Maxx Sport and CX-5 GT, the new Touring was our test vehicle as Mazda was keen to get us into one to promote it. And thus increase its sales from the already healthy ²JXUH RI RYHU &; V VROG WR GDWH STYLING Style was one of the big selling features of the original Mazda CX-5. The new one carries the same overall theme, but with a smoothing out of the lines, almost to the extent of being minimalistic. It works exceptionally well to our eyes. As, indeed, does the entire Mazda range. The Mazda Kodo styling theme has worked a treat in the past and shows no sign of slackening in the eyes of potential buyers.

The CX-5’s upright grille is bold, with the upper and lower areas matching neatly. The doors have sculpting in their lower areas and the C-pillar treatment is interesting. We feel the rear lights are rather small but, as always, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The CX-5’s instruments are sporty in their layout, clear and easy to use.

INFOTAINMENT Infotainment from the Mazda MZD Connect system is accessed through a 7.0-inch full-colour touchscreen. There’s AM and FM, as well as DAB+ radio.

Connectivity is by Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio, Aux, and USB. Control is through steering wheel buttons for many functions, there’s also Mazda’s handy Commander rotary controller on the centre console.

The central screen is a good size and has Mazda’s attention to minimisation of driver distraction. However, keep in mind that

Satellite navigation is optional on the CX-5 Maxx but standard on all other variants.

DRIVETRAINS At a time when some companies are offering little or no choice of drivetrains, Mazda has a large suite. Though based on the powerplants of the superseded CX-5, WKH\ KDYH VLJQL²FDQW LPSURYHPHQWV $OO use Mazdaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unusual SkyActiv technology.

A 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol has 114 kW, and 200 Nm at a highish 4000 rpm.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also a 2.5-litre petrol producing 140 kW, and 251 Nm, again at 4000 rpm.

Both engines are naturally-aspirated rather than turbocharged, which probably explains why then need plenty of revs to get the torque to its peak.

0D]GD $XVWUDOLD KDV DJDLQ VSHFL²HG WKH petrol engines be detuned slightly to suit Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s low-grade 91 octane standard petrol.

A 2.2-litre turbo-diesel puts out up to 129 kW of power, with 420 Nm of torque at 2000 revs.

A six-speed manual is on offer with the smaller petrol engine, all others have a sixspeed automatic transmission. This auto

is also mated to the 2.0-litre petrol when requested.

Power is taken to either the front wheels alone, or to all four wheels for added traction on slippery roads.

Our test CX-5 Touring had the larger petrol engine, automatic transmission and AWD, which is likely to be the most popular combination.

SAFETY All CX-5 models have six airbags, automatic emergency braking, smart city braking, blind spot monitoring, front and UHDU DQG UHDU FURVV WUDI²F DOHUW DQG D UHDU view camera thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s backed up by rear parking sensors.

DRIVING Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s comfortable seating inside for IRXU DGXOWV ZLWK D ²IWK EHLQJ SRVVLEOH without too much hip and shoulder rubbing. However, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very much a 40:20:40 layout and may not suit all those in the centre seat if they are on the wide side.

Rear seat legroom may prove marginal if a tall person sits behind a driver more than about 1.7 meters tall. Try for yourself as this could be a deal breaker if you have a mob of hulking teens.

The back seats can be set at two angles

to let you juggle luggage / passenger space. Large armrests are a feature we really liked in the front seats.

Boot volume, at 442 litres, is almost 10 per cent greater than in the superseded CX-5. A spacesaver wheel / tyre is used to give added depth to the boot. The area is easy to load and the rear seatbacks can be lowered by using levers in the load area.

Ride comfort is impressively smooth on smooth roads and still better than average when the surfaces deteriorate.

Handling is good, for an SUV, and thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s good, safe road grip even at speeds higher than those likely to be used by family car drivers. A bit more steering feel would be appreciated by those who enjoy their driving.

The ambiance inside the cabin is a major feature of the new CX-5, it feels more like a large, luxurious sedan than a family kid and grocery hauler.

The 2.5-litre petrol is smooth, quiet and reacts quickly to throttle inputs, an advantage of not having to spin up a turbocharger. Though peak torque doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t come in until 4000 revs thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s good punch at normal engine speeds.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a Sport button that sharpens up acceleration, but we found it tended to hold onto gears for too long for normal GD\ WR GD\ WUDI²F XVH The automatic transmission is quick to sense driver demands and road conditions and shift to lower ratios when required.

Fuel consumption was in the nine to ten litres per hundred kilometres range in VXEXUEDQ DQG WUDI²F GULYLQJ )DOOLQJ WR DQ impressively low six litres per hundred on easy paced motorway driving at about 110 km/h.

SUMMING UP Mazdaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second generation CX-5 is an impressive piece of engineering. The RULJLQDO ZDV JRRG WKLV RQH LV VLJQL²FDQWO\ EHWWHU 'H²QLWHO\ RQH WR EH DGGHG WR \RXU short list. It may even steal some sales from the bottom end of the German prestige marques.

The drink holders are large and supportive while the USB, Aux and SD card sockets are at the bottom of the centre console box.

ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS As before, 2017 Mondeo comes with the choice of two 2.0-litre turbocharged engines, an EcoBoost petrol and Duratorq diesel. The petrol has two different levels of tune, 149 kW and 345 Nm in the entrylevel Ambiente and 177 kW and 345 Nm, in the higher-specced Trend and Titanium.

The Duratorq diesel has 132 kW, and 400 Nm from 2000 to 2500 rpm.

All models use a six-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel mounted paddles for manual overrides.

INFOTAINMENT Fordâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sync3 infotainment system is standard across the 2017 Mondeo range to control the various infotainment features including satellite navigation.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a fair bit of learning involved which can be frustrating for the occasional driver, but owners should adapt quickly and get the maximum

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto allow access to Apple Siri and Google Now. Compatible apps include Spotify, Pandora and Google Maps.

There are two USB sockets located in the centre console storage box but highlighted with white surrounds for easier access.

Standard across the range is Fordâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s innovative MyKey system that parents will love but young drivers will tolerate at best. It allows the vehicleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s smartkey to be programed to limit a number of components within the car including speed warning chimes that sound at set points above 70 km/h; the setting of a maximum speed; limits on audio volume; seatbelt warnings that do not time out and which can be set to disable the audio system; and stops safety features such as stability control from being deactivated.

DRIVING 2XU ²UVW LPSUHVVLRQ ZDV RI D FDU ZLWK D solid feel to the body, usually a good omen IRU D ORQJ OLIH (QWU\ LVQÂŹW GLI²FXOW DOWKRXJK we found our headroom restricted with the Titaniumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s standard sunroof.

The dashboard instrument panel is rather cluttered with a large array of information that takes some getting used to.Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no digital speedometer or head-up display.

6WHHULQJ LV ²UP DQG SUHFLVH DQG WKH suspension provides an ideal balance between comfort and driving feel.

Titaniumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Lane Keeping System in

addition to the normal alert warning automatically adjusts the steering torque input towards the centre of the lane when it detects an unintended lane departure. A clever feature but a little bit of a shock if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not aware of what is happening.

The diesel engine in our test Titanium ZDV TXLHW DQG UH²QHG ZLWK SOHQW\ RI JUXQW for safe overtaking and easy hill ascents.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s excellent smooth acceleration thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nicely linear across the range, making the car most enjoyable and safe to drive.

Although smaller than Falcon Mondeo is still a full-size family car so donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t expect sports car dynamics.

We got a reading of 6.9 litres per 100 km with fairly enthusiastic driving during our WHVW DQG ZRXOG EH FRQ²GHQW RI JHWWLQJ down well into the sixes although weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d struggle to match the listed 5.3 L/100 km.

SUMMING UP After many years as the bridesmaid to the Falcon bride Mondeo has caught the bouquet and assumed the prime position as Fordâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s premier family passenger car.

Mondeoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s combination of great looks, VSDFLRXV LQWHULRU DQG IXHO HI²FLHQF\ DUH attracting plenty of attention from the daily commuter or family buyer, as well as for its performance and handling from the keen driver.

Commodore VXR something special

By EWAN KENNEDY LATE last year Holden released initial details of the fully-imported NG (Next Generation) Commodore ahead of its Australian launch in early 2018. In an interesting move, journalists have been provided with an extensive array of details much of them under strict embargo.

It comes as no surprise that the big emphasis of the latest release is on the KRW &RPPRGRUH 9;5 ÂłDJVKLS ,W ZLOO come with a V6 engine putting out 235 kilowatts of power and 381 Newton metres of torque through a nine-speed automatic transmission to an all-wheeldrive system. Adaptive suspension technology and torque-vectoring will further add to the dynamics of the AWD system.

Jeremy Tassone, Holdenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s engineering group manager for vehicle development, tells us, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had our Holden engineers engaged in this global program from the outset and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re continuing to do extensive tuning and development, racking up thousands of kilometres at our Lang Lang proving ground in Victoria to ensure itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s got that Holden magic. â&#x20AC;&#x153;While it may not be built here, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll deliver a high-performance Commodore that our customers will love in 2018.â&#x20AC;?

Commodore VXR has Brembo front brakes and the ability for drivers to switch between driving modes.

Adjustable settings include Continuous Damping Control (CDC), steering, transmission and an adaptive AWD system.

The next-generation Commodore VXR will be on sale alongside the rest of the sedan range, along with Sportwagon and hatchback Tourer body styles, in early 2018.

In hindsight we may well have seen an NG Commodore VXR in action at Holdenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Lang Lang proving ground two days ago when we were there for preliminary test drives of the upcoming Equinox and Acadia SUVs. There was certainly an NG passing by on not too distant roads at the time, but we werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t close enough to see through its disguise overlays or hear the exhaust note.

Nice one to sneak it past us, Mr Holden.

Holden takes us to the future of SUVs

By EWAN KENNEDY THEREâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S no secret that Australians steadily lost interest in large family sedans DQG VWDWLRQ ZDJRQV RYHU WKH SDVW ²YH WR ten years. To the extent that slow sales meant the closing of the Ford Australia factory and the impending shutdown of GM-Holden and Toyota factories over the next few months.

Buyers deserting traditional family sixes in favour of various types of SUVs meant that Holden began to look closely at various alternatives. Everything from small front-drive tall hatches to full on 4WDs. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve just spent a delightful day in WKH VHFUHW FRQ²QHV RI *0 +ROGHQÂŹV development centre and proving ground at Lang Lang a couple of hours south east of Melbourne.

There we looked at the future of Holden SUVs downunder.

HOLDEN EQUINOX Equinox is the replacement for the ageing Holden Captiva. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an all-new vehicle developed by Chevrolet, with input from Australian engineers going back almost to day one of the clean-sheet VWDJH ²YH \HDUV DJR We had a comprehensive drive (though obviously not on public roads) of what +ROGHQ FDOOV D ÂŤFDSWXUHG WHVW ÂłHHWÂŹ &7)

Â&#x201E;VIVA EQUINOX: Holden Equinox has a semi-sleek visual appearance at the rear that hides what is a large cargo compartment. line and was an almost 100 per cent DFFXUDWH GHSLFWLRQ RI WKH ²QLVKHG SURGXFW In the early stages of the program Holden was only to get a 1.5-litre turbopetrol four-cylinder engine. Well aware of the sales disaster of the Ford Falcon with its small four-cylinder turbo engine the Holden guys and gals lobbied hard to have another two engines to sell, a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and a 1.6-litre turbodiesel.

The 1.5-litre four-cylinder produces 127 kW and 275 Nm; the 2.0-litre petrol 188 kW and 353 Nm while the 1.6-litre turbodiesel has 100 kW and 320 Nm.

The 2.0-litre Equinox has a sophisticated nine-speed automatic transmission (pretty much as in the NG Commodores arriving next year). This is the vehicle we tested and we came away impressed by the low turbo lag, smoothness and the seemingly endless array of gear ratios.

Equinox 1.5-litre petrol will be able to be ordered with either a six-speed auto or six-speed manual gearbox. Equinox diesel has a six-speed automatic transmission.

If you havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been keeping in touch with car engineering over the last few years donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be put off by these small engine capacities. High-tech

turbocharging and modern electronics mean they put out very impressive SRZHU DQG WRUTXH ²JXUHV 7KHVH GD\V LWV common to see midsize Audi, BMW and Mercs running small four-cylinder turbo engines.

Both front and on-demand all-wheel drive (AWD) powertrains will be available on the Equinox.

Australian suspension and steering tuning has been extensive and on our short road test routes on sealed and dirt surfaces certainly felt just the way Aussies like it.

Steering is electrically assisted and Aussie-spec Equinox will have torque vectoring (by brake) to improve handling.

Amongst many other local features, electric upper and lower grille shutters LPSURYH DHUR HI²FLHQF\ ZKLOVW RSHQLQJ WR provide maximum cooling in the heat of the Aussie outback in summer.

Braked towing capacity is 2000 kg for the 2.0-litre petrol. Holden hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t given us ²JXUHV RI WKH RWKHU SRZHUSODQWV DW WKLV stage.

Australian Equinoxes will be built in Mexico.
