Subaru XV safety is strong

WITH the arrival of the secondgeneration Subaru XV in June comes the debut of new safety technologies, headlined by Eyesight–driver assist system and Vision Assist.

Although they work in tandem, Eyesight and Vision Assist have different functions and features, so let’s take a look at each in detail.

EYESIGHT The third-generation Eyesight system will be standard on the mid-spec Subaru XV 2.0i-L Premium as well as the range topping 2.0i-S Subaru XV and operates through two cameras, mounted one each side of the interior mirror.

The hi-res, colour cameras operate like a pair of eyes, scanning the road and surrounds ahead, to recognise objects, potential hazards and either prevent, or at least minimise, the risk of frontal impacts.

A visual warning on the instrument panel and alarms alert the driver to any dangers and if no action is taken, one or more of the Subaru XV’s safety systems engages.

This latest Eyesight system includes pre-collision braking system which automatically applies the brakes to assist avoiding a collision or to lessen the force of impact.

Speed difference detection has increased from 30km/h on the previous version to 50km/h and object recognition, like brake lights or rapidly decelerating vehicles, is VLJQL²FDQWO\ HDUOLHU WKDQ EHIRUH

„EXTRA EYES: New driver assistance technology is a feature of the Subaru XV. Pre-collision brake assist, which differs from the previously mentioned system despite similar titles, is triggered by Eyesight and automatically applies full braking power to shorten the braking GLVWDQFH LI LW LGHQWL²HV WKH GULYHU LV QRW braking hard enough to avoid a crash.

Throttle applications are also monitored

by Eyesight and the pre-collision throttle management system prevents a driver accelerating into a stopped vehicle or object in front of them by alerting the driver and reducing engine power or applying the brakes if no driver inputs are sensed. This is especially handy in

situations like accelerating to merge into WUDI²F DV WKH FDU DKHDG DFFHOHUDWHV EXW then suddenly slows or stops.

Eyesight is the catalyst of the Adaptive Cruise Control, with the cameras altering the speed of the Subaru XV to maintain a constant distance to the vehicle in front.

With a wider arc being detected by the camera, it picks up vehicles cutting in or changing lanes on multi lane roads.

If Eyesight recognises a potential impact and senses rapid steering movements to avoid it, the VDC control increases turning ability to assist the driver and activates the hazard lights in an emergency stop.

VISION ASSIST This is only available on the top of the tree Subaru XV 2.0i-S. While the Eyesight manages any potential hazards forward, Vision Assist monitors the side and rear of the XV via a number of radars. There is one on each side and one below the rear lights, hidden by the rear bumper fascia. %OLQG 6SRW 0RQLWRULQJ LGHQWL²HV LI a vehicle is unseen from the driver’s rearward view due to incorrect adjustment of the door mirrors. The XV alerts them by illuminating the lights, embedded in the mirrors.

Another handy feature is the Lane Change Assist which senses a vehicle approaching in an adjacent lane, at the rear of the XV. It determines if there is a risk of collision by the XV driver changing lanes, an audible alert is sounded.

5HDU &URVV 7UDI²F DOHUW LV D UHODWLYHO\ new feature and is built into the reversing camera. It sounds a warning if a vehicle is approaching from either side of the XV and there is potential for a collision.

The reversing camera in the XV also has JXLGHOLQHV IRU WKH ²UVW WLPH WR DVVLVW LQ reversing.

One element of the Vision Assist that faces forwards are the Steering Responsive Headlights, where the headlight beam moves in sync with the steering input, when turning corners or at intersections and lights up the road where the vehicle is travelling.

Uprated noise insulation has been used to achieve a calm interior, while the four-spoke leather steering wheel is functional with a sporty overtone. The latter incorporates cruise, audio and other controls with auto transmission paddle shifts mounted behind the wheel.

Sharply contrasting instrumentation contributes to a luxury appearance and a multi-information display in the dash panel provides information on fuel consumption, fuel range, eco-drive assistance, as well as drive and off-road modes.

Compatible smartphone connectivity is a given through Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Users can connect to apps, including navigation, stored on their smartphone through the system’s 7-inch colour touch screen or via voice control.

The system also allows users to make calls or send SMS messages hands free.

Smartphone Display Audio is standard on all Pajero Sport models. Digital radio is VWDQGDUG ZLWK DOO YDULDQWV ²WWHG ZLWK '$% along with traditional AM/FM tuner.

Mitsubishi’s uprated 2.4-litre turbodiesel engine, launched in the 2016 Triton, produces 133 kW of power at 3500 rpm and 430 Nm peak torque at 2500 rpm.

Using aluminium cylinder block

An all-new eight-speed automatic WUDQVPLVVLRQ KDV EHHQ JLYHQ LWV ²UVW RXWLQJ in a Mitsubishi vehicle and has been specially developed for Pajero Sport. It features a sophisticated adaptive control system which features uphill control to select the best ratio; downhill control, where lower gears are selected to support deceleration via engine braking; and accelerator pedal release control, in which upshifting is temporarily prevented when the accelerator pedal is rapidly released to provide engine braking and assist acceleration performance once the pedal is re-applied; and rapid kick-down control.

All Pajero Sport models have seven airbags – driver and front passenger, side, side curtain and driver’s knee, as well as Mitsubishi’s RISE (Reinforced Impact

Safety Evolution) impact safety body.

The addition of a third row of seats to make a seven seater is all very well, but it does have its drawbacks. The front two rows of seats are easily accessible, generous in width and supportive but the back pair are a different matter.

Getting in and out is easy enough with the second row tumbling forward to leave good access. However, legroom is limited

The loading lip is high and the tailgate, without power operation, heavy and awkward to close.

Embedded satellite navigation is not installed. It is up to the user to download from Apple Carplay or Android Auto from a smartphone and operate through the touch screen or voice control; believe it or not, this is still not accessible to everyone, only smartphone owners.

The test Pajero greedily gulped up to 13.6 litres per 100 kilometres worth of diesel in the city and suburbs. However, this turned into a redeeming 5.6 litres per 100 kilometres on motorways at 110 km/h maximum. Reducing the speed to 100 km/h on the open road cut consumption even more, to 5.1.

The Pajero Sport has a tight, for its class, turning circle of 11.2 metres. Reduced lockto-lock turns also improve ease of parking.

Power assist has been calibrated to reduce steering effort when stationary or at low speeds while providing greater feedback at higher speeds.

All Pajero Sport models incorporate Super Select II four-wheel drive with dialup 2H, 4H, 4HLc and 4LLc. Terrain off-road modes – gravel, mud / snow, sand, and rock - likewise can be selected. For horror stretches the Pajero Sport GLS can call on a rear differential lock.

As with all seven-seater SUVs the catchword is compromise and the Pajero Sport is no different. It’s either a full house ZLWK OLWWOH VSDFH IRU JHDU RU LWV ²YH XS ZLWK enough room in the back for a reasonable amount of cargo. The choice is yours.
