stopping the clock in a flat six seconds. Peugeot Sport is responsible for the two-level tuning of the 1.6-litre fourcylinder engine, with a supercharged air-intercooled system specially developed and installed below the front bumper. Both of the hotshots develop peak torque of 330Nm at just 1900rpm and feature sixspeed manual transmissions. The GTi 250 we tested was fitted with a Sports Pack which monitors G-forces, recalibrates the throttle map, amplifies the exhaust note and presents a power / boost / torque readout.
Sitting 11 mm lower than the standard 308, with a wider track of 1570 mm at the front and 1554 mm at the rear and rolling on Michelin Pilot Sport tyres the 308 GTi has been engineered to offer exceptional grip. The front features full LED headlamps with integrated daytime running lights, flanking a new black radiator grille. The air intake is surrounded by sequential LED indicators, while below the bumper two spoilers optimise aerodynamics. Redesigned door sills hint at the car’s nononsense nature. The sleek new rear features a gloss-black section incorporating twin exhaust pipes. The GTi signature is writ large on the
front wings and tailgate. The Peugeot i-Cockpit cabin reflects the sporting nature of the car. Seats – sports style up front - are in dark Alcantara / TEP with red contrast stitching; the leather bound steering wheel features the GTi logo at the bottom and red centring mark at the top. Drilled aluminium pedals reinforce the hatchback’s sporting nature; dark tinted privacy glass adds a touch of mystery to occupants’ identity while travelling at speed. If the Peugeot 308 GTi is a hot hatch, the infotainment set-up is, in modern terms, ‘cool’.

THE iconic Peugeot 205 GTI holds a stunning place in the automotive lexicon. After a decade of stellar performance, the little French machine called the ‘best hot hatchback of all time’ ended its production run in February 1994. The French automobile maker thought it time to revisit those halcyon days and has come up with the 308 1.6THP GTi. The car is available in two specifications with two levels of tuning - the 184kW 308 GTi 250 carries a recommended retail price of $44,990, while the 200kW 308 GTi 270 is $49,990, both plus on-road costs. Subaru Liberty and Outback 2003 - 2015 By EWAN KENNEDY

SUBARU Liberty is a no nonsense sedan or station wagon with a reputation for toughness and reliability. The Subaru Outback, launched in 1996, is based on the Liberty wagon and has increased suspension height, meaning it sits about midway between a conventional wagon and a 4WD. Outback is one of the earliest of the socalled crossover vehicles that have been increasingly popular over the last decade. As more and more SUVs are really just 2WD vehicles with a taller body, Subaru Outback is standing out from the crowd. In its first model the Outback had a tougher appearance than the Liberty wagon because of the protective plastic facings on the doors. These were discontinued with the new generation of 2003 to give the vehicle a more upmarket air. In this week’s feature we will look at this used-car feature, for no other reason than the original Outbacks are ageing and there can be a wide difference in their condition. Subaru Liberty is sold as a four-door sedan and a five-door station wagon, with a much larger percentage of wagons being sold than in other models in its class. The combination of the traction of all-wheel drive and the practicality of a wagon rear end is a strong one with those who go to the snowfields or want to tow a midsize boat. The engines have a flat ‘boxer’ layout, that is horizontally opposed (as in Porsche and old Volkswagen models) to lower the centre of gravity for improved road holding. This layout gives them the distinctive beat that many owners just love. Engine capacities in the four-cylinder models are 2.0, 2.2 and 2.5 litres. The 2.0 actually has more performance than the 2.2 being a later design. Flat-six engines began with a 3.0-litre unit in the Outback, and later the Liberty range, its capacity increased to 3.6 litres in September 2009.Subaru calls the flat-
2004 Subaru Liberty GT. six engines the H6 - ‘H’ for horizontally opposed. These Subarus are reasonably easy to work on and most routine jobs can be carried out by an experienced home mechanic. However, safety items and most areas of the high-performance variants are best left to the professionals. Spare parts prices are about average for a car in this class. The Subaru dealer network, though relatively small, works efficiently. Because of Subarus’ popularity in country areas there are dealers in comparatively remote areas. There are a couple of high-performance Liberty variants. While these predate the 2003 starting point we have set for the rest of Liberty range, we have included them because they are gaining some sort of semi-rarity status and appeal to those who want to keep clear of the madding crowd. The Liberty RS has a 2.0-litre turbocharged unit and was launched in Australia in 1992. It was on sale for less than two years, when it was upstaged by the smaller and lighter Subaru Impreza WRX. The Liberty B4 sports machine has a twin-turbo 2.0-litre. It first came here in August 2001 but the
2013 Subaru Outback. engine had been significantly detuned from the one offered on the Japanese market to run on our lower-octane petrol. The recently released Subaru Levorg can be likened to the RS and B4, but it’s far too new to be considered as a used car in this report. Insurance charges are moderate on all but the high-performance Liberty RS and Liberty B4, which can be very expensive to cover. Even more so if you are a young and/or inexperienced driver. WHAT TO LOOK FOR Rust is not common in Subarus, but if one has been badly repaired after a crash it may get into the metal. Outbacks that played in the water’s edge on a beach may also have problems. Call in a professional inspector if there’s the slightest doubt about the body’s condition. Have a look underneath an Outback for signs of damage as some owners really do treat them as though they are ‘real’ 4WDs. The undersides of the bumpers, especially on their corners, are usually the first to suffer. With the sill panels a close second. Mud or a real buildup of dust may indicate a lot of time spent off the beaten track. Look over the interior trim and carpets for
signs of damage, though they usually hold up well. Check out the luggage area for signs of harsh treatment caused by carrying big and/or sharp loads. Be sure the engine starts quickly and immediately idles smoothly no matter how cold it is. Manual gearboxes should be quiet in operation and gearchanges should be smooth and light. Automatics which tend to hunt up and down the gears, or which are slow to go into gear, could be due for an overhaul. HOW MUCH? Budget on spending from $4000 to $7000 for a 2005 Subaru Liberty 2.0i; $9000 to $14,000 for 2006 Liberty 3.0R-B or a 2008 Outback 2.5i Premium; $12,000 to $18,000 for a 2009 Liberty GT; $16,000 to $22,000 for a Liberty 2.5i GT; $20,000 to $28,000 for a 2013 Outback 2.0D; $25,000 to $34,000 for a 2014 Liberty 3.6X; and $30,000 to $41,000 for a 2015 Liberty 2.5i GT Premium CAR BUYING TIP When buying any family-oriented vehicle check the condition of the back seats and load area for higher than average wear rates. Also look at the bodywork immediately around the outside of the cargo area for scratches and dents.

Front and centre is a 9.7-inch colour touchscreen with access to most vehicle systems via icons on the perimeter of the screen. Audio, Bluetooth connectivity, satellite navigation, even dual- zone climate control, are operated through this, leaving the centre stack relatively free of clutter. The screen is flanked by air-con outlets. An information display behind the steering wheel directly in front of the driver is dominated by twin dials, on the left speedo and to the right tachometer. This is where things become really different. The speedo needle moves in the traditional clockwise direction, while the tachometer sweeps in an anticlockwise movement – a touch of French humour, perhaps. A programmable digital readout splits the two dials. At the heart of both variants is Peugeot’s high-output 1.6-litre THP petrol engine, with two power outputs depending on the model. With 184 kW in the GTi 250 and 200 kW in the GTi 270. That’s 250 horsepower and 270 horsepower in high-performance car terms.

PEUGEOT HOT HATCH: It has style and performance. The transmission, previously used in the RCZ-R by Peugeot Sport, has been enhanced to absorb torque of up to 330 Nm. The engine runs on 95 RON or 98 RON fuel and injection pressure is 200 bar. As well as a full 308’s worth of airbags and a large suite of active safety features, including switchable electronic stability control, the Peugeot 308 GTi includes rearview camera and front parking sensors. On laps of the track at the Sydney Motorsports Park earlier in the year, with weight distributed 63:37 front to rear, the car remained well within limits of grip, while steering a steady course through quick and tight corners.

Likewise recently on the public road, steering was in complete harmony with the advanced technology of the powertrain, putting the car on the correct line for any turn in the road. However, the brakes had to be treated gently. They worked confidently pulling the car up from speed, but tended to grab at slow speeds, making the going uncomfortable in stop-start traffic The instrument layout and positioning of controls are clear and simple, the short-throw gearshift close at hand, seats offer good support without restriction of movement. Pressing the Sport button on the centre
console brings to life the standard Sport Pack, which switches the instrument display from white to red, shows additional information on the central read-out (power, torque, boost, lateral and longitudinal acceleration), enhances the engine’s throaty growl and changes accelerator pedal mapping for a more inclusive driving experience. Fuel consumption on test worked out at 10+ litres per 100 kilometres around town, and five litres on motorway runs. There would not be a more comfortable hot hatch on the market at the moment, Peugeot 308 GTi has an excellent combination of style, performance and ease of driving.

SPORTS cars generally fall into two camps. On the one hand, performance edge can be dulled by the desire for comfort; RQ WKH RWKHU FRPIRUW PD\ EH VDFUL²FHG at the altar of pure power. There is, however, the odd exception to this rule: the BMW M2. Building on the success of the limited edition BMW 1 Series M coupe brought Down Under in 2011, the new BMW M2 coupe is available in two variants – M2 Pure ($89,900) and M2 ($98,900) – both featuring a 272 kW / 465 Nm 3.0-litre turbo-petrol engine. Driving through the rear wheels, the M2 Pure’s engine is mated with a six-speed manual gearbox, this was the car we tested. The M2 uses a seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT) with Drivelogic and Integrated Launch Control function. These can then be viewed on an 8.8inch colour display. The M2 Pure also features full Bluetooth connectivity for audio streaming and safe hands-free phone calls and a high quality HiFi audio system with DAB+ digital radio and USB and auxiliary inputs. The top-of-the-range M2 features even more advanced technology for comfort, convenience and entertainment including keyless Comfort Access system, adaptive headlights with high beam assist, electric adjustment and heating for the M sport front seats, alarm system and a Harman/Kardon Surround Sound audio.
Making use of a TwinScroll turbocharger, high precision fuel injection, Double-Vanos variable camshaft timing and Valvetronic variable valve control, the engine produces maximum power of 272 kW at 6500 rpm and peak torque of 465 Nm from 1400 rpm to 5560 rpm, with an overboost function pushing torque to 500 Nm for a few seconds when required, it comes in between 1450 and 4750 revs. When mated to the seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission the engine enables the M2 coupe to hit 100 km/h from rest in just 4.3 seconds. It’s slower, at 4.5 seconds, when combined with the six-speed manual gearbox as on our test car. There’s lane departure warning and collision and pedestrian warnings with city braking function and cruise control with braking function. The BMW M2 would not pretend to be anything but a 2+2. BMW M2 coupe provides agility, precision and control on the road thanks to sports suspension, dual-mode electric power steering, an active M differential and dynamic stability control. Safety recall: 86 vehicles
TOYOTA Australia is recalling almost 15,000 Toyota 86 vehicles built between April 2012 and March 2015 due to a potential loss of power steering assist. The recall impacts right-hand drive vehicles equipped with driver's knee airbags. Due to an improper wire harness layout, there is a possibility that the electric power steering harness may interfere with the instrumental panel lower cover which contains the driver's knee airbag on $XVWUDOLDQ VSHFL²FDWLRQ YHKLFOHV If this happens, there could be an electrical contact failure which may result in the loss of power steering assist. WINTON Raceway is set for a busy month of on track action, which kicks off with the CAMS sanctioned Victorian State Circuit Racing Championships on September 3-4. It will be a jam-packed schedule with Group N Historic Touring Cars, Improved Production, HQ Holdens, Formula Vee, Porsche 944 Challenge, Victorian Formula Ford, Victorian Sports Sedans, MG & British Sports Cars and Production Sports Cars taking to the track.
