Toyota HiLux By EWAN KENNEDY in May 2015 sits in a spot somewhere between a full-on pickup and a passenger SUV. Significant parts of the development of the 2015 generation-eight HiLux was done by Australian engineers. In particular body strength and suspension were the subject of 650,000 kilometres of road testing in everything from high-summer running on dirt tracks in the outback to slow grinding traffic in Melbourne honed the HiLux. STYLING Our test HiLux was the Rogue (complete with ‘RROGUE’ number plates to emphasise the point). Its revamped front
and rear are based on the extra-large Toyota Tundra sold in the US of A. The Rogue’s tub features a stylish, yet practical sports bar and has a good looking bespoke hard tonneau cover. Inside, Rogue has leather-accented seats, new design instrument cluster featuring a bolder look, metallic black ornamentation and black headlining complete. POWERTRAIN The Rogue uses the toughest of the drivetrains sold on the HiLux, however, there are no changes to its specs from standard. The 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine generates up to 130kW of power and 450Nm of torque. It drives only through
an automatic transmission as no manuals are offered in the Rogue. It has a parttime, shift-on-the-fly 4x4 system with a full set of low-range ratios. INFOTAINMENT A 7.0-inch colour touchscreen isn’t particularly large but it’s clear enough and easy to use. It gives access to satellite navigation and digital radio which has the usual excellent sound quality – but the usual irritation of signal dropping. Bluetooth, as usual, is a handy feature. SAFETY Toyota HiLux Rogue, like the rest of the range, has been awarded an ANCAP fivestar safety rating.

By EWAN KENNEDY THE march of the four-door utes in Australia continues relentlessly. Holden has announced a new special model tagged as the Colorado Z71 Xtreme. It is based on the Colorado Xtreme concept vehicle that was unveiled at the Bangkok International Motor Show in 2016. The great majority of utes sold in Australia are built in Thailand, hence the use of that rapidly growing motor show as a launch venue. Holden Z1 Xtreme uses a bundle of popular accessories, many of them designed and built by Holden’s Port Melbourne-based design team. Based on the top of the range Colorado Z71 it has a black radiator grille, a bonnet bulge, fender ³ DUHV EODFN WXEXODU VLGH VWHSV ;WUHPH decals and a soft tonneau cover. It rides on Goodyear All Terrain Wrangler tyres with dimensions of 265/60R18. Holden tells us that the Xtreme has a best-in-class winch system that’s equipped with a heavy-duty bash plate, as well as 10,000-lb load capacity and a 30-metre

Comfort is good and road noise is surprisingly low for a commercial vehicle. The HiLux Rogue left us fresh after a couple of longer than average test runs out west of our base on the Gold Coast. This Toyota engine is pretty sophisticated for a commercial unit. It responds well to the pedal on the right and doesn’t run out of puff too soon. While refined in steady driving it becomes somewhat vocal if you accelerate hard. But let’s not forget it’s a truck not a car. The auto is pretty responsive and is generally in the correct gear, though some of the shifts thumped at times. However, the HiLux doesn’t have the acceleration of a car and overtaking takes

longer than average. Nor does it have the handling of a car. It holds on safely enough in bends but you’re not going to get any real driving pleasure from it. Fuel consumption ran in the 10 to 12 litres per hundred kilometres range in around town driving, dropping to seven to nine litres on the aforementioned trips. For a change none of our neighbours spotted our HiLux Rogue in the driveway and came to ask if we would mind shifting something bulky for them (trips to the tip are common‌). Perhaps they recognised the Rogue as being a ‘tuff’ toy not a serious load hauler. SUMMING UP Frankly, I fail to understand the current fashion for using double-cab utes as family cars. However, the Toyota HiLux Rogue is one of the better units in this class, with good looks, decent ride comfort and reasonably good performance.

Cue the Holden Winch system, the Xtreme’s hero accessory, which is a game-changer.� Colorado is powered by a 2.8-litre turbodiesel that has 147kW of power and a very handy 500Nm of torque. All have six-speed automatic transmission. It boasts a 3.5 tonne towing capacity. Colorado Z71 Xtreme is priced at $69,990 driveaway and will be available at Holden dealers from October 1, 2018. It’s likely to prove very popular so it might be a good idea to contact your favourite Holden dealer asap.
