THE new A6 could be the harbinger of the product-intense period Audi is about to enter, which includes stepping up electric power to take on the ever-expanding list of EV rivals.

The recently released A6 Sedan makes use of mild hybrid vehicle technology. While it’s no petrol / electric Prius, there is middling energy recuperation when braking or coasting, producing the odd power boost, as well as fuel savings.

Powerplants are TFSI turbo-petrol drivetrains, the A6 55 TFSI quattro, with its 250 kW / 500 Nm 3.0-litre V6 engine and the 45 TFSI quattro, producing 180 kW of power and 370 Nm of torque between 1600 and 4500 rpm.

By DEREK OGDEN 45 TFSI, using 48 and 12-volt systems respectively. The former functions as the car’s main electrical system and allows power regeneration of up to14 kW, plus start-stop operation from 22 km/h.

Both powerplants are mated to Audi’s seven-speed S tronic transmission, quattro all-wheel drive.

The 45 TFSI quattro comes to market at $95,900, plus on-road costs; an S line version, the test car, adds almost 10k. This vehicle also boasted a Premium plus package 2, which nudges the price over $120,000.

Completely redesigned from the ground up, the new A6 sedan hooks into $13,000 added style, quality, technology and value over its predecessor with an eye to the

$300,000-plus yearly household income family.

STYLING Renowned for sporty vehicles, Audi has tuned to the A6 to introduce the latest thoroughbred from its sedan stable.

Elegant styling is touched up with sharp aero elements up front and a fastback behind, producing a co-efficient of friction of Cd 0.26 compared to the 0.28 of its predecessor.

The Audi A6 S line models add S line exterior package, 20-inch alloy wheels in five V-spoke design, suspension with adaptive damper control.

A Premium plus package (from $9800) is available on S line models, and includes HD Matrix LED headlights, S line interior pack-

age, privacy glass, panoramic glass sunroof, Bang & Olufsen 3-D sound, power steering column adjustment, electrically opening and closing boot lid, as well as a colour interior lighting package.

INTERIOR The interior is more spacious than before and features genuine timber trim. Sport front seats are upholstered in Valcona leather, illuminated door sill trims are S design and head-up display helps keep the driver’s eyes on the road.

Back-seat occupants are well catered for with easy access to up to three positions, more legroom than before and their own USB slots and climate controls.

Hot new Porsche Cayman and Boxster range

By EWAN KENNEDY PORSCHE is adding two new models to its mid-engine sportscar, the 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 and the 718 Boxster GTS 4.0.

Both are powered by a 400 hp (294 kW) 4.0-litre six-cylinder boxer engine, based on the engine used in the 718 Spyder and the 718 Cayman GT4. When combined with the manual six-speed transmission and sports exhaust systems it achieves the rush to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds on its way to a top speed of 293 km/h.

The 718 GTS 4.0 models adopt the twin tailpipe sports exhaust system from the 718 Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4. With its saddle-type design, this creates space for the contrasting black rear lower section that was specially developed for the GTS models.

They have Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) sports suspension, a 20 millimetre lower ride height and Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with mechanical limited slip rear differential.

Black contrasting design elements and a dark Alcantara interior create highlights typical of GTS models.

Other features are Porsche Stability Management (PSM) with separately selectable PSM Sport mode, the Sport Chrono package including the upgraded Porsche Track Precision App, Porsche Active Drivetrain Mounts (PADM) and Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with mechanical limited slip rear differential.

These high-performance models have 20-inch light-alloy wheels in Satin-Gloss Black, tyres are 235/35 ZR 20 at the front and 265/35 ZR 20 at the rear.

The enhanced brake system features cross-drilled discs and red calipers.

Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) are available as an option.

Inside, Dark Alcantara trim is used for the centre panels of the standard Sport Seats Plus it's also used on the steering wheel rim, centre console, gear lever and armrests. In the 718 Cayman GTS 4.0, it covers the A-pillars and roof lining.

The 718 GTS 4.0 models come as standard with Porsche Communication Management (PCM) with a high-resolution seven-inch touchscreen and the Sport Chrono package, including the enhanced Track Precision App. This smartphone app, which originates from motorsport, shows performancerelated data on the PCM display while in race track use and records it for later analysis.

The BOSE Surround Sound System and Burmester High-End Surround Sound System are available as options.

Australians buyers are spoiled, with additional standard equipment. This includes cruise control, seat heating for driver and passenger, heated multi-function steering wheel, two-zone automatic climate control, light design package, alarm system with interior surveillance and windscreen with grey top tint.

Also on the Aussie imports will be ParkAssist with reversing camera, Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS) and automatically dimming mirrors. Then there are Porsche Connect, digital radio and Apple CarPlay with Siri voice recognition.

The 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 is priced from $172,400 and 718 Boxster GTS 4.0 is from $175,200, plus on roads. Both are available to order now and will arrive in Australia from mid-2020.

Convenient wireless charging for Qi mobile phones and an Audi music interface has two front and rear USB outlets.

SAFETY The Audi A6 sedan has already earned a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating and brings Down Under a full suite of Audi driver assistance systems such as adaptive cruise assist with traffic jam assist, plus 360-degree cameras with kerb view standard across the range.

Also included are active lane assist, side assist with cross-traffic alarm, collision avoidance, turn and intersection assist, and exit warning. There are even illuminated seat buckles to highlight passive safety at night.

The A6 Sedan body is 30 per cent more rigid than previously thanks to a mix of steel and aluminium.

ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS The 2-litre four-cylinder turbo engine brings up maximum power of 180 kW between 5000 and 6000 rpm. The powerplant includes mild hybrid electric vehicle technology, with the 45 TFSI utilising the 12-volt system.

Power is put to ground via a seven-speed S tronic dual clutch transmission and quattro permanent all-wheel drive.

DRIVING The Audi A6 45 TFSI quattro S line is no sports sedan – zero to 100 km/h comes up in 6 seconds – but acts as a showcase for all Audi can present with a non-SUV of the highest automotive pedigree.

readable against dark, if somewhat sombre, cabin surroundings.

Touch screens have taken over from the old Audi central control knob, for which I still yearn, especially when trying to hit the right spot on the screen to call up the info I want.

On the other hand, I can’t fault the virtual cockpit, especially with its Google maps.

Drive-select modes – efficiency, comfort, auto, dynamic and individual - are straight out of the Audi playbook, changing throttle response, weighting of steering, transmission mapping and adaptive cruise control.

All-wheel drive remains ‘on’ until the front wheels maintain enough grip to work well enough on their own.

Ride is what you’d expect from big-end-oftown transport – down to a suspension making, well, executive decisions and reacting to any untoward outside influences sometimes thrown up by less-than-perfect Aussie road surfaces.

Honda Jazz 2008 - 2018

By EWAN KENNEDY JAZZ is the smallest Honda car sold in Australia. It was launched here in October 2002, received excellent reviews and sold well from the start.

However, these early cars are probably past their used-by date so we will start this review at the gen-two Jazz introduced in August 2008 and follow up with the third generation of July 2014.

Though it's a smallish car Jazz has a high roofline to maximise interior space. It can seat four adults without any of them being cramped. In Australia it’s more likely to carry one or two people. It's generally used as a city or suburban runabout.

The Jazz has an excellent folding rear seat design, with the fascinating title of Magic Seats. The back seat slides backwards and forwards to let you juggle between people and/or luggage. Even better, it can be folded in a few seconds to create a very large luggage area.

The second generation Jazz kept the same general styling theme as the first, but is larger overall and sits on a longer wheelbase. The result is significantly more room inside, particularly in the rear.

(If you want a Honda Jazz with a larger boot you can choose the Honda City which is a Jazz with a four-door sedan rear end.)

Ride comfort is good if roads are reasonably smooth, but it can be bounced about on bumps. Noise levels are generally subdued but concrete surfaced freeways can be noisy in the earlier models.

Honda Jazz comes with a 1.3- or 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. Five-speed manuals are light and easy to use, but weren’t all that popular. Autos are sold in conventional or CVT format. The latter works well but if you've not experienced sitting behind one before it may feel odd at first. Give it a decent test drive and you’ll probably find its extra efficiency is worth the trouble.

While the Jazz is reasonably easy for the amateur mechanic to work on, there is some underbonnet crowding that’s inevita-

ble in a car of this size. Keep a workshop manual at your side and don’t attempt any safety related work unless you’re qualified to do so.

The Honda Australia dealer network is widespread in the heavily populated areas, but dealers are not all that established in remote areas.

Spare parts prices for Hondas are generally pretty reasonable.

We seldom hear of any real hassles with getting hold of spare parts, but if you are concerned about this it may be smart to make local enquiries before falling too deeply in love with one of these cute little models.

Insurance costs for Honda Jazz generally sit in the mid-range of the field. There doesn’t appear to be any real differentiation between companies on premium charges.

It’s always wise to spend some time shopping around for the best deal, though.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR Make sure the Jazz has been serviced by the book. As it's generally a city car servicing should have been done on a time, rather than distance basis. If you find it's the latter there may be excessive mechanical wear.

Have a professional inspection after carrying out initial checks to the best of your ability.

Bodywork should be undamaged and not show any signs of previous panel work.

To check for the latter look for paint spatters on non-painted areas, also sight down the sides in good light to see if there are any ripples.

Corrosion is not common unless the car has been poorly repaired after a smash.

Look over the interior to make sure it hasn’t suffered at the hands of uncaring owners, especially bored young kids.

Check that the engine starts easily and responds quickly and positively to the throttle, even when it’s completely cold.
