Other distinctions include signature daytime running lights and chrome window moulding. Mazda’s long Australian history

By EWAN KENNEDY MAZDA Australia is proud of the fact that its Mazda3 is chosen by more Australians than any other car.

Pointing out that while Toyota Corolla sometimes outsells the Mazda3 overall, many Corollas are bought by company ÂłHHWV %XW ZKHQ EX\HUV PDNH WKHLU RZQ choices more go for the Mazda3. Splitting hairs? Perhaps, but it is certainly a valid point that given a choice, the ‘3 is number 1.

Mazda3 began its life as Mazda 323 just on 40 years ago and to celebrate its 40th anniversary Mazda invited a select group of journalists to drive examples of 323 and ‘3.

This fascinating event was held at the Mt Cotton Training Centre outside Brisbane to allow us to drive in controlled conditions. Sadly it rained for most of the day. Wet weather during Mazda events in Queensland is becoming an unwanted tradition, much to the embarrassment of we journalists living in the (allegedly) Sunshine State.

The event began with a fascinating talk

by David Chalke from AustraliaSCAN highlighting the many social changes we have seen since 1977. Then it was RQWR WKH 0W &RWWRQ URDGV ²UVW GULYLQJ D rear-wheel-drive Mazda 323 dating back to 1977. The little Mazda was quieter and smoother than anticipated, though certainly not to the impressive standards of today’s cars. The four-speed manual gearbox meant the engine was pretty busy at 100 km/h but certainly didn’t feel in any way stressed. Much lighter than current small cars the 323 provided real

Next was the Mazda 323 that shared many parts with the Ford Laser including styling. This pair created a real stir on the Australian market, as quite a few buyers were beginning to move away from large family sixes. This 323 had front-wheel drive - one of the major automotive changes during the ‘70s was the switch to this space-saving feature.

The Mazda 323 was still light and pleasant to drive and felt a little more solid than the previous car. The view out was excellent thanks to the slim pillars and large windows.

My next drive was the Mazda 323 that I reckon was the prettiest car of the day the Astina with concealed headlights of the type normally only seen in full-on sports cars. Which may explain why the car had a lovely lively feel to match its style.

Much nicer, was the next Mazda 323 SP20 . Not really a hot-hatch by today’s standards, though it had a bit more poke than the standard models and the suspension only had minor tweaks. Light, agile, good fun.

the time so didn’t want to take any risks.

On the road it felt more modern than the last of the 323s. A little quieter, a fair bit heavier as crash safety regulations were starting to become pretty serious.

It was competent enough, but far from interesting to drive.

The second generation Mazda3 jumped a major step forward. Good in many ways, but not so interesting in others. Smooth, UH²QHG DQG FRPIRUWDEOH ZHUH WKH SOXV points I scribbled. But it had put on a lot of weight and didn’t offer a lot of driving enjoyment. Rather it was a sophisticated small family carrier, not a small fun car like its honourable ancestors.

The thick A-Pillars, which provide strength in a crash, made it hard to see out on tight corners. As this is a feature of virtually all late model cars drivers have become accustomed to having to move their head around on twisting roads.

Occasionally not seeing other vehicles coming out of cross streets and running into them as a result‌ Finally the current Mazda3 that I drove to and from Mt Cotton from my home on the Gold Coast before taking it onto the testing roads. Its Kodo styling works exceptionally, it’s smooth, quiet, comfortable and crammed full of active and passive safety features.

DECISION TIME For around town trips and weekend drives to near-country areas I would choose to drive a lovely old restored Mazda 323 rear-driver. For longer trips and to have a crash in - the latest Mazda3 would be my vehicle of choice.

New Navara continues long-time ‘Thai’ „ From page 1 INTERIOR Adjustments have been made to instrument shapes and positioning. Seat angle now combines to create a wider, higher and more spacious effect. Design and position of the door mirror and A-pillar provide improved visibility.

Spinal support in the front reduce fatigue during long drives by distributing body pressure on the seating surface through the middle section in the folding seat back to promote a ‘neutral’ posture to reduce pressure on the spine and muscles.

In the rear seat, there is optimum division of knee room and body angle as well as ample head room.

INFOTAINMENT The focus of the cabin is a 7.0-inch integrated colour display with touch screen, which incorporates satellite navigation with 3D mapping. A USB and Auxiliary port in the centre console lower storage area is easy to reach.

An Advanced Drive Assist Display provides multiple screen options in the centre of the dashboard, between the tachometer and speedometer dials and include fuel economy, distance to empty, audio information and navigation directions.

Bluetooth phone and audio streaming are included, while NissanConnect smartphone integration allows use of apps such as Facebook, Google Search and Pandora.

ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS The ST features a twin-turbo 2.3-litre four-cylinder diesel unit producing 140 kW of power at 3750 rpm, with 450 Nm of torque available in the rev range of 1500 to 2500.

„COMFY: The new Navara is far more comfortable than previous models.

The test vehicle’s seven-speed automatic transmission enjoys an expanded range of gear ratios, giving a wider range of speeds along with smooth acceleration and shift changes. Fuel consumption is aided by idle neutral control, as well a damper torque converter, which enables low-rev lockup without impinging on NVH. 7KH VKLIW RQ WKH ³\ :' V\VWHP OHWV the driver switch between 2H and 4H at the turn of a switch at speeds of up to 100 km/h. Braked towing capacity on all grades is 3.5 tonnes.

SAFETY $OO ²YH VHDWV LQ 'XDO &DE PRGHOV KDYH three-point emergency locking retractor seatbelts. The front seatbelts also have load limiters and pre-tensioners and height adjustment. A standout feature is a driver’s side knee airbag. The energy absorbing

bonnet is designed to minimise pedestrian injury. A reverse camera is standard.

New generation Vehicle Dynamic Control with brake limited-slip differential improves performance and safety. Anti-lock braking, electronic brake-force control, traction control and brake assist also are included.

Crumple zones in the body minimise occupant injury in the case of an accident, as do side impact door beam and automatic fuel valve cut-off in a rollover.

DRIVING The new Navara Dual Cab is far removed from its rather agricultural predecessors in that it presents a comfortable car-like passenger environment free from excessive road noise, with only the hum of the diesel engine in the background.

The revised suspension makes for a smoother ride on the road under varying

loads. A fully-boxed ladder frame design gives the ability to withstand hard work day after day, and high-tensile strength steel in strategic areas that enables it to handle roads with a lateral tilt of 32 degrees.

Daily use as a workhorse puts capacity and convenience at the top of the cabin storage list. The Navara delivers on both accounts, with a centre console offering concealed storage and rear air vents for second-row passengers. Larger pockets are located in the driver and passenger doors.

Other options include the glove box, RYHUKHDG VXQJODVVHV KROGHU DQG ÂłLS up rear seats with concealed storage underneath. There are four front-row cup holders and two bottle holders for both front and rear rows. Storage trays are positioned on top of the dashboard and in the centre console.

Three 12-volt power sockets feature on all Dual Cab models - in the dashboard upper storage tray, centre console tray and centre console storage box. A fourth, weather-proof socket can be found in the tub.

2XW RI OHIW ²HOG FRPHV DQ HOHFWULF VOLGLQJ glass panel in the cabin window operated by a switch on the dashboard. Says Nissan, this allows easy reach access into the tub and increased ventilation. As my grandma would put it ‘it is neither use nor ornament’.

SUMMING UP The Navara Series 2 Dual Cab puts the working man, or woman, on a higher plane than previous models with nice touches of convenience and comfort, while making room for family members to share in the pleasing driving experience.

Toyota style Paris fashion

SAFETY and style: it appears Toyota is covering all bases with its revised light passenger vehicle, the Yaris hatchback.

It has class-leading safety systems available across the range and is clothed in an interesting shape from the Toyota ED2 design studio in the south of France.

The result is premium safety that’s standard on the top-of-the-range Yaris ZR we drove, and a $650 option on the Ascent and mid-range SX variants.

Yaris hatches are well equipped, featuring cruise control, a display audio system with controls on the steering wheel spokes, a multi-information display, air-conditioning, electric power steering, power windows and mirrors and a 12-volt accessory socket.

Despite styling improvements, the starting price stays at $15,290, plus on road costs, for the Ascent and an unchanged $17,330 for the SX, with the option of automatic transmission remaining at $1530. The new auto-only ZR price of UHÂłHFWV WKH DGGLWLRQ RI WKH VDIHW\ equipment.

The French connection placed a greater emphasis on horizontal lines to express a wide, more planted stance and low centre of gravity. This was done with a new front bumper mimicking a catamaran with EURDG VHFWLRQV ÂłRZLQJ GRZQ IURP QHZ KHDGOLJKWV ÂłDQNLQJ WKH ZLGH WUDSH]RLGDO grille.

The new grille contributes to the Yaris’s more steadfast appearance with stepped horizontal bars delivering a 3-D effect.

Fog lamps on the ZR are packed in a more compact recess with a vertical line that follows the outer edge of the bumper and features a bright chrome trim detail.

New headlamps include a forked IUDPH DURXQG WKH PDLQ ODPS WKDW ÂłRZV seamlessly into a single line extending in a matching chrome trim element towards the central Toyota emblem.

„ FRENCH STYLING: With style upgrades all round, the Toyota Yaris shapes up to continue its success in the small-car segment.

The ZR rolls on 16-inch alloy wheels with VLOYHU ²QLVK ZKLOH WKH FDWDPDUDQ VW\OLQJ LV repeated at the rear with a new bumper design that harmonises with the lines of WKH WDLOJDWH DQG H[WHQGV WR VLGH UH³HFWRUV separated by a lower bumper garnish. A rear spoiler and automatic levelling head lamps top and tail the Yaris upgrades.

The cabin has also been freshened with gloss black ornamentation replacing the silver highlights on the steering wheel, audio unit surround and around the gearknob base.

Toyota Yaris SX variants, in addition to the bigger engine, are equipped with rear and rear side privacy glass, and a premium steering wheel and gear-lever, while SUHPLXP IHDWXUHV ²WWHG WR WKH =5 LQFOXGH automatic climate control air-conditioning, satellite navigation, plus Toyota Link internet connectivity.

7KH OLWUH HQJLQH ²WWHG WR WKH 6; DQG ZR delivers maximum power of 80 kW at 6000 rpm and top torque of 141 Nm at 4400 revs and is mated with a four-speed

automatic transmission. It is now rated at Euro 5 for emissions.

Every model in the Australian Toyota Yaris range has seven airbags, a reversing camera, vehicle stability and traction control, anti-skid brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, DQG DQ HPHUJHQF\ EUDNH VLJQDO WKDW ÂłDVKHV the hazard lights.

The premium safety system, standard on ZR, consists of a pre-collision system, lane departure alert and auto beam headlights.

The pre-collision system monitors the road ahead, warning the driver of an imminent collision risk and readies the brakes for maximum operation when the brake pedal is pressed.

If the driver fails to respond to the warning, the system will trigger autonomous emergency braking to slow the car to reduce the severity of any impact.

Lane departure alert looks out for lane markings. If the Yaris begins to deviate from its lane without the turn indicators

being used, the system alerts the driver with visual and audible warnings.

Automatic high beam detects the KHDGOLJKWV RI RQFRPLQJ WUDI²F RU WDLO OLJKWV of vehicles ahead, automatically switching between low and high beam to avoid dazzling other drivers.

As far as driving’s concerned what’s new about the Yaris ZR? First up, it rained on test; so what’s new? What’s new is that the Yaris has only one windscreen wiper that TXLHWO\ DQG HI²FLHQWO\ VZLSHV DOPRVW DOO WKH glass, leaving a wide and clear view ahead.

No surprise then, that in these days of HI²FLHQF\ ZLWK HFRQRP\ RWKHU VPDOO FDU manufacturers will follow suit.

The automatic high beam headlights left a little to be desired by operating in a random pattern not consistent with how I possibly would have worked them for clearest vision of the road ahead.

The four-speed automatic transmission of the Yaris is a tad behind the times but is in quite good harmony with the motor, the 141 Nm of torque pulling it through. Peak torque doesn’t arrive till 4400 revs, but it has a fair bit of grunt leading up to that engine speed.

Toyota puts the fuel consumption on the combined urban / highway cycle at 6.4 litres per 100 kilometres. During test the ZR auto recorded 5.2 litres per 100 kilometres on the open road and topped 7 OLWUHV SHU LQ FLW\ WUDI²F *RRG WR VHH WKH Japanese are providing more realistic fuel ²JXUHV WKDQ WKH (XURSHDQV DQG $PHULFDQV 7KH <DULV UHWDLQV WKH TXDOLW\ RI ²W DQG ²QLVK DVVRFLDWHG ZLWK 7R\RWD YHKLFOHV with space and comfort to match, the ZR variant is a worthy range topper.

Since taking over the small-car mantle from the Toyota Echo in 2005, the Yaris has led the light-car segment in four \HDUV DQG KDV EHHQ UXQQHU XS ²YH WLPHV The fresh face and added safety features should help maintain this outstanding record.

Lexus LC is a lovely coupe

YOU may remember the Lexus LFA supercar of a few years back? It was an ultra-expense, limited-edition model and production ceased in 2012.

However, many of the skilled engineers and designers who crafted the LFA were then transferred to the Lexus LC project.

That lovely coupe is about to go on sale in Australia and at a considerably lower price than the $750,000 Lexus LFAâ&#x20AC;Ś Sensibly, Lexus doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t charge extra for the hybrid as it has done in the past. Both LC models share a recommended price of $190,000, to which on-road charges have to be added.

Lexus and parent company Toyota have long been promoters of petrol-electric hybrid cars so it comes as no surprise that the LC comes as an LC 500h (that little h stands for hybrid). It produces a combined output of 264 kW of power and 348 Nm of torque from a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine 300 Nm motor generator.

Electricity storage takes place in a OLJKWZHLJKW OLWKLXP LRQ EDWWHU\ 7KH ²UVW of its kind in a Lexus, which appears to have been dragging the chain on the latest technologies on batteries.

Sadly the LC 500 doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t offer a delightful V10 engine as seen in the Lexus LFA. However, an impressive high-tech, high-
