INFOTAINMENT The latest technology features are based around the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience). It can be activated by saying ‘Hi Mercedes’ to gain access to important functions, destination details, phone calls, music choices, as well as the ability to write and hear messages.

Regular radio programs, such as news reports, will be suggested through an advanced voice recognition system that understands what the designers call ‘natural’ language. It doesn’t need set commands and can even get its electronic brain around various accents.

Extra value from Jeep Night Eagle

By ALISTAIR KENNEDY JEEP has released special edition Night Eagle versions of its Cherokee and Grand Cherokee mid-sized and large SUVs. They use the same dark appearance which has worked well for Jeep in previous Blackhawk special editions and in the Cherokee Night Eagle that was sold here in mid-2018.

The Night Eagle models are based on the entry-level AWD variants of each model (Grand Cherokee Laredo and Cherokee Longitude) but according to Jeep add over $10,400 worth of customer value for only $5500 in the Grand Cherokee and more than $6400 for only $3200 in the Cherokee.

The Grand Cherokee Night Eagle features black exterior finishes throughout as well as 20-inch five-spoke blacked-out alloy wheels; deep tint sunscreen glass; singlepane sunroof; and ‘Night Eagle’ badging on the tailgate.

Inside there’s Black Capri leather seat upholstery with perforated suede inserts and black accent stitching. The infotainment system uses the UConnect 8.4-inch screen with satellite navigation and pairs to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Cherokee Night Eagle follows the same theme with gloss-black exterior styling enhancements including front and rear fascia and roof rails, and ‘Night Eagle’ badging. It rides on 18-inch black alloy wheels and also has the Jeep Longitude Technology Package which includes adaptive cruise, side distance warning, and parallel and perpendicular park assist.

Grand Cherokee Night Eagle is available with either of the two Laredo engines, the

Those which work at crash avoidance are brake assist with semiautonomous braking, active lane keeping, blind spot monitoring, a warning to not open a door if traffic or pedestrians are close to the vehicle on the outside, and traffic sign recognition.

If you still get into a crash up to nine airbags will expand to look after you and your fellow travellers: front, pelvis side and window bags for driver and front passenger, side bags for rear occupants and a knee bag for driver, DRIVING This is where the all-new A 250 really shows its stuff. Engine performance is ex-

cellent and though there's a little turbo lag it soon comes on song, then there's plenty of delightful acceleration for real world driving and safe overtaking in short opportunities on country roads.

The dual-clutch automatic reads the driver’s intentions well and works neatly with the engine’s computer to have the correct torque on hand virtually all the time.

However, like many of its type it's a little fussy at very slow parking speeds, which can make life interesting in tight spots.

Ride quality and noise suppression inside feel every bit as good as that of the C-Class, perhaps even an older E-Class.

Even on the notoriously noisy concrete motorway surfaces between our office on the Gold Coast and Brisbane the A 250 was almost silent inside.

Comfort is, again, like that from a Mer-

cedes from the next size up. The front seats support well and the back seat can be used by someone behind a 181cm driver such as myself. However, some compromising may be required depending on your/their leg lengths.

Fuel consumption was low, with easy running having the Merc using just five to seven litres per hundred kilometres on motorways and flattish country running. It rose to ten to twelve litres in day-to-day traffic and was pretty much the same on our favourite country roads with their lovely bends, rises and drops.

SUMMING UP New Mercedes-Benz A 250 is a performance machine from the prestigious German car maker at a relatively modest price.

Honda Jazz, City 2008 - 2017 JAZZ is the smallest Honda model that’s sold in Australia. It was initially launched here in October 2002, but we will only cover from the second generation of September 2008 in this review.

Not only is the 2002 getting on in years but the 2008 is significantly larger to make it more suited to adults in the rear seats. It has better in-cabin refinement and overall equipment levels. Handling was given a slightly more sporty feeling though, as it's intended as a city car, the emphasis still leans to the comfort side of the equation.

An emphasis on reducing fuel consumption and exhaust emissions pleased many buyers.

Honda Jazz in its fourth generation reached us in July 2017, it's still relatively new to cover in detail as a used car. Suffice to say that, yet again, it's longer than before to provide added room. It's also smoother and quieter to ride in.

Comfort in the little Honda is good if roads are reasonably smooth, but it can be bounced about on bumps. Keen drivers may find it a little lacking in steering precision.

Honda Jazz has a high roofline to maximise interior space in what is a relatively small body. It can seat four adults without too much compromising on legroom, something that was improved with each new generation.

There’s reasonably easy entry to the back seat but try for yourself if elderly folks are likely to be travelling there.

Honda Jazz has a brilliant folding Magic Seat design. The seat slides backwards and forwards to let you choose between people and/or luggage. It can be folded in a few seconds to create a very large luggage area. The front passenger seat backrest can be reclined all the way down to let you carry long loads extending from the dashboard to the rear window.

If you want a Honda Jazz with a larger boot you can choose the Honda City which is effectively a Jazz with a four-door sedan rear end. It was usually introduced a few months later than the Jazz and hasn’t proven

Honda Jazz comes with a 1.3- or 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine, though not every engine is offered in each model. Though the engine capacities remained in the second-generation Jazz, they were an all-new design. Power and torque were increased, yet fuel consumption and exhaust emissions came down.

The torque graph was stretched to give more grunt at the bottom end of the rev range.

Manual and automatic transmissions are offered, some autos are CVTs, others use a traditional torque convertor. Manuals aren’t particularly popular and may be difficult to resell / trade in in years to come.

While the Jazz is reasonably easy for the amateur mechanic to work on, there is some underbonnet crowding that’s inevitable on a car of this size. As always have a workshop manual at your side and don’t attempt any safety related work.

The Honda Australia dealer network is widespread in the heavily populated areas, but less so in remote areas.

We seldom hear of any real hassles with getting hold of spare parts. Parts prices are more reasonable these days than in the past.

Insurance costs for Honda Jazz (and City) generally sit in the mid-range. There doesn’t appear to be any major differentiation between companies on premium charges. It’s always wise to spend some time shopping around for the best deal, but make sure you do accurate comparisons.

We have seen damaged seals on the hatch lids that have led to water damage on the boot floor. Also check the underfloor compartment.

CAR BUYING TIP Small city cars often suffer from more bumps and grinds than their country cousins. And are often running with their engines below full operating temperature. So don't be fooled into thinking a low km reading is a good thing.
