It’s showing the rest of the world its quality credentials according to JD Power research, sales are soaring in Australia, and new models are coming out almost by the month. Now comes the biggest news of all, especially if you’re a keen driver who’s a bit light on in cash. The new Kia Stinger high-performance hatch has just been FRQ² UPHG IRU $XVWUDOLD Kia Stinger was unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show and is certainly a long way from being just another sensible hatchback at a modest price. Styling a four-door isn’t easy but the sleek shape works extremely well, from the VR FDOOHG «6FKUH\HU JULOOH¬ ³ DQNHG E\ YHU\ slim headlights and continues back over a louvred bonnet to a sloping roof, and sculpted doors. There have to be questions about headroom in the rear, hopefully we can answer them soon. The Stinger will arrive in Australia with the 3.3-litre V6 twin turbo driving the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. :RUN RQ WKH HQJLQH LV DW WKH ² QDO VWDJHV of detail design, but it’s expected the V6 will produce 272 kW of power at 6000 rpm and 510 Nm of torque starting as
low as 1300 rpm and going through to 4500rpm. Insiders are saying they anticipate a zero to 100 km/h dash of 5.1 seconds. At the back of their minds might be hopes of getting it into the four-second bracket. Time will tell. A 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine will be sold in overseas markets and seems very likely for Australia as well. Extensive on-road testing continues to be carried out in many places, including around the famed Nurburgring circuit in Germany. To really cap it off for we downunder drivers, the Stinger will undergo further ULGH DQG KDQGOLQJ UH² QHPHQWV LQ $XVWUDOLD over the next few months to ensure it suits our roads and - even more importantly, our drivers’ tastes.
We would expect the V6 Kia Stinger to be priced in the high 40Ks, with the fourcylinder, if it does come, to be in the low 40s, perhaps even in the top end of the V LI .LD¬V KHDG RI² FH FDQ EH SHUVXDGHG to sharpen its pencils. Speaking with a great deal of enthusiasm of the upcoming Stinger, Kia Motors Australia chief, Damien Meredith, says, “This is a car you cannot help but be excited by. It has all the attributes to appeal to the Australian enthusiast – exciting design, a high-tech performance engine and gearbox combination, and rearwheel drive.” Kia Stinger is expected to arrive in Australian showrooms in the third quarter of this year. Power and economy boost for Toyota Kluger TOYOTA will introduce added performance, refreshed styling and improved convenience to its familyoriented Kluger SUV when a facelifted range arrives in Australia late next month. Kluger receives a performance infusion with gains to power and torque from its V6 powertrain, which is now equipped with direct-injection engine technology. The updated V6 petrol engine delivers improved acceleration and overtaking with a substantial increase in power of almost 8.5 per cent to 218kW while torque rises to 350Nm. Making best use of the engine’s upgraded SHUIRUPDQFH DQG HI²FLHQF\ WKH .OXJHU now employs a new direct-shift 8-speed automatic transmission. CAR makers in the USA are running scared of Donald Trump, pulling a lot of production out of Mexico back into the United States. Oddly, this may be really good news for Australian buyers. The latest announcement is from Jeep’s parent company FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) which is going to expand its assembly plants in the USA and move some work to them from its current Mexican factory. FCA says it will spend one billion USD in new investments that will create 2000 new jobs in the US of A. The investment includes retooling and modernisation at the Warren, Michigan, and Toledo, Ohio, plants. FCA is keen to point out that it has committed investments of more than $9.6 billion in its U.S. manufacturing facilities and created 25,000 jobs to date since 2009. Now comes the fascinating news: following its announcement on plant plans FCA says it will revive the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer station wagon models. And - this one is really
interesting - a Jeep pickup truck based on the rough ‘n’ tough Wrangler. Given that a pickup, the Toyota HiLux, was the biggest selling vehicle outright in Australia in 2016 there’s little doubt a Jeep Wrangler pickup would be welcomed here. 7KHUH DUH QR RI²FLDO SKRWRV RI WKH under-development Jeep pickup at this stage as the company is keeping it XQGHU ZUDSV <RX PD\ EH DEOH WR ²QG some secret shots and photoshopped impressions on the internet. The often insular Americans are notorious for not building vehicles with their steering wheels on the correct side for us and have yet to say whether the new Jeep Wagoneers and Wrangler pickups will have RHD versions. FCA says the investment in Warren, Michigan will enable that plant to produce the Dodge Ram truck, which is currently built in Mexico. These are
