VOLKSWAGEN: The Alltrack is a Golf wagon with lofty ambitions.

Golf raises hopes of Golf in the rough

WITH hatchback, wagon, cabriolet, GTI and R ranges, with all their variants, the Golf is the everyman of the Volkswagen world.

Now the Alltrack has been added to a seemingly ever-growing family of the best seller.

With the latest VW 4Motion all-wheel drive system and a new generation Haldex coupling the Alltrack can take the small wagon on unsealed roads where two-wheel drives are not encouraged to venture.

Even so, with the addition of a new 1.8-litre TSI turbocharged petrol engine coupled to a six-speed DSG automatic transmission, the Alltrack loses nothing

We spent time with an Alltrack 132TSI priced at $37,990, plus on-road costs, to which had been added a Driver Assistance Package and Luxury Sports Package, pushing the price up to $42,290.

The Driver Assistance Package consisted of adaptive cruise control, Front Assist with City Emergency Brake function, Park Assist parking bay and parallel parking assistance and Proactive occupant protection system, while the Sports Luxury Package added alloy

wheels with 225/45 R18 tyres, tinted rear side window and rear window glass, panoramic glass sunroof with wind deflector and sunblind, plus steering wheel mounted gearshift paddles.

Stylish doesn’t seem the word for the Golf Alltrack, but neither does the alternative – utilitarian.

Being a hybrid of a station wagon and sports utility vehicle, styling comes down on the side of practicality on or off road, starting with up to 20 mm ride height above a standard Golf Wagon.

Wheel arch mouldings and flared side sills offer additional body protection, while newly designed bumpers with BiXenon headlights, incorporating dynamic

cornering function, make the vehicle instantly recognisable from the front.

Add to this standard 17-inch Valley alloy wheels, specifically created for the vehicle, and unique rear badging, from every angle there’s no mistaking the Golf Alltrack.

Alltrack has premium quality material and fitout, including Vienna leather upholstery, a leather multi-function steering wheel and gearshift knob, plus ambient lighting in the door trim and LED reading lights.

With seating for up to five adults, the Alltrack does not suffer from the small SUV syndrome – little luggage space.

Jaguar XF: A business express

By EWAN KENNEDY AUTOMOTIVE retro styling is a tricky business; it has worked well for BMW with the Mini, Fiat’s 500 and VW New Beetle.

Yet Jaguar couldn’t make a success of the retro route in its XJ models, despite having a long tradition in styling.

The Brits took the apparently correct decision to give its previous generation XJ series high-tech mechanical components under a superbly engineered aluminium skin - which was styled in the retro manner.

It didn’t work, so the famed Jaguar designer, Scotsman Ian Callum gave us an all-new, almost controversial, shape with the Jaguar XF. Callum’s styling theme was later followed by the larger XJ and recently by the smaller XE and has been well received by buyers.

However, changes to buyers’ acceptance can take time and the Australian Jaguar importer was intrigued to find that sales of the XF in the latest 12 months exceeded those of the introductory 12 months in 2009, exactly the opposite of the normal graphs that start with a bang and taper right off at the end.

Time flies and the second edition of the imagebreaking Jaguar XF has just been released downunder.

It comes as no surprise that it has a solid resemblance to the

ALL-NEW: Jaguar XF is sleek and purposeful. successful model it supersedes.

The distinctive newgeneration Jaguar grille is almost upright and flanks reasonably large headlights, with large foglight grilles beneath them.

The profile is long, low and sleek to follow the longtime Jaguar theme and finishes off with a fastback rear end.

Jaguar XF has two infotainment systems.

The standard one is InControl Touch and uses an 8.0-inch touchscreen.

It supports gestures such as those used on smartphones and tablets - ‘swipe’ and ‘drag’, as well as voice recognition control.

Touch Pro has a 10.2-inch touchscreen.

As with a smartphone, the home screen can be customised, wallpaper can be set to any image, and widgets can be added to provide shortcuts.

InControl Touch Pro also supports the latest generation of Jaguar’s amazing Dual View technology and has a 100 per cent increase in screen pixel count.

We loved the audio output from the optional 17-speaker, 825-Watt digital surround sound system developed by Meridian in conjunction with Jaguar.

Power is provided by a choice of four-cylinder turbo-petrol and turbodiesel engines, both with

capacities of 2.0 litres.

Or a pair of V6 engines, one a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel the other a supercharged petrol, again displacing 3.0 litres.

We spent time with all four engines over twoday, 500+ km routes in the Yarra Valley area in Victoria chosen by Jaguar Australia.

Ideal conditions, with tight, winding roads; fast flowing bends; and some motorway running.

It probably comes as no surprise that the supercharged petrol was our favourite unit.

Its silky smoothness and fast throttle response made light work of hills and for short distances on the wrong side of the road when overtaking.

All engines sit in front of an eight-speed automatic transmission.

It works brilliantly with the engine’s computer, providing fast, smooth changes and generally reading the driver’s mind as to the correct ratio.

While Jaguar tells us the XF is aimed at a slightly more mature owner than the smaller XE we find it just as enjoyable to punt hard.

The EPAS (Electric Power Assisted Steering) in the new XF is still as we described after driving the XE - the best in the business as far as feel and accuracy is concerned.

You can feel the added weight in the front of the two V6 models, but probably only if you have

just stepped into a V6 fresh from the four-cylinder.

Road grip is excellent, with huge margins of safety and generally unobtrusive electronic assistance should you mistakenly enter a bend at a far higher speed than intended.

Ride leans slightly to the sporting side in the endless ride/handling compromise that always bugs suspension engineers.

We like the firmness and feel true lovers of sporting sedans will side with us.

Jaguar XF is a true businessman’s express.

We were surprised at the level of tyre noise on harsh road surfaces at times, you would not call it bad, but try for yourself during your pre-purchase test drive.

Smooth roads provided limo-like smoothness and noise levels.

Interestingly, there was less tyre noise in the V6 models than the fours, probably because of the expensive highperformance tyres fitted with the larger engines.

Mind you, the 700 newton metres provided by the V6 diesel was addictive, it’s just a pity that oil burners start to lose interest at about 4500 revs…

Jaguar continues to struggle with the many buyers who seem blind to anything other than the ‘big three’ upmarket German car makers.

But, honestly, if you don’t add one of these sporting British sedans to your list of test drives you are making a mistake.

The cargo area measures 1055 mm up to the back of the rear seats and 1831mm up to the back of the front seats.

The space is well kitted out with a luggage partition net, shopping bag and load restraint hooks, interior lights and a 12-Volt socket in the boot.

The Golf Alltrack features the latest in Volkswagen infotainment technology, with a bonus of the innovative App-Connect system, which features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto systems, which allow drivers to access content from the latest-generation smartphones for music, messaging and navigation.

This integrated technology is displayed in high definition via the 6.5-inch screen of a Discover Media unit, which offers satellite navigation, plus USB, SD card and AUX-in connectivity.

The Alltrack sees for the first time a 1.8-litre TSI turbo-charged petrol engine in the Golf.

The direct-injection four-cylinder turbocharged motor with BlueMotion Technology stumps up 132 kW from 4500 rpm and develops an impressive 280Nm of torque from a low 1350rpm through to 4500rpm.

STYLISH: The Golf Alltrack looks good, outside and in.

The Golf Alltrack 1.8 TSI comes with a sixspeed dual-clutch gearbox as standard.

Multi-Collision Braking System which automatically initiates braking of the vehicle that has had an accident in order to mitigate a subsequent collision.

As with the many new vehicles these days a rear view camera comes standard.

There are also parking distance sensors, Electronic Stabilisation Program and a low tyre pressure indicator.

Performance figures say much about the versatility of the vehicle with the maker stating a top speed of 217 km/h and acceleration from zero to

100 km/h in 7.8 seconds.

This contrasts with claimed fuel consumption of 6.7 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined urban / highway cycle, which equates to 158 g/km of carbon dioxide.

Fuel consumption in Normal driving mode reached as high as 14 litres per 100 kilometres on one occasion in the suburbs, while a sustained highway run got that down to 6 litres per 100 kilometres.

The test vehicle’s six-speed DSG transmission was found to be somewhat slow to engage, making for a tentative takeoff at times, and worse, a tendency to

roll when starting off on an incline.

Left-foot braking was the answer to the latter.

A driving profile system, managed by a button on the centre console, now comes with an Off-road’ mode as well as the preexisting Normal, Sport and Eco. The ‘Off-road’ driving profile activates the hill descent function, modified accelerator pedal characteristics and the off-road configuration of the ABS. Without tracking fuel consumption, the Eco mode held back the Alltrack’s performance considerably, while Sport added considerable spice to the drive, heightened even further by the use of the steering wheel-mounted paddles.

The result was the Golf Alltrack showed itself to be a car with a wide range of characteristics, most of them pleasing.

The Golf Alltrack combines the practicality of the Golf wagon, with unique features of the Alltrack model line, including leather trim, higher ride height, additional body protection and all-wheel drive.

Already it’s turned out to be an award winner in the highly competitive small SUV sector.

Toyota to launch Corolla hybrid hatch TOYOTA will bring the added appeal of hybrid technology to Australia’s favourite car with the mid-year launch of a Corolla hybrid hatch.

The new hybrid car is expected to use around one-third less fuel while producing similar power to the already efficient petrol-only Corolla hatch with its Multidrive S automatic transmission.

Corolla hybrid hatch will be introduced as a well-specified single grade, expanding the local company’s Hybrid Synergy Drive offerings to a fifth model following Prius, Prius c, Prius v and Camry.

Premium features will include satellite navigation, Toyota Link connected mobility, dual-zone automatic airconditioning and bi-LED headlamps.

Toyota Australia’s executive director of sales and marketing, Tony Cramb, said the company’s full hybrid technology is established as a mainstream powertrain choice. “The combination of Toyota’s hybrid technology and Australia's best-selling car gives us a unique opportunity to broaden the market appeal of both,� Mr Cramb said. “Corolla hybrid hatch will offer all the advantages of Australia’s favourite car, coupled with the hybrid system’s established performance, reliability, durability and exceptionally low running costs. “This addition to the Corolla range will be fun to drive - and fun to own with fuel economy and emissions that are superior to its direct competitors, especially diesel. “There is enormous potential for the hybrid Corolla as shown by its success

Australia’s best-selling hybrid vehicle is Camry with 5881 sales last year, an increase of 11.2 per cent over the previous year.

The Corolla Hybrid hatch will be fitted with a Euro 5 compliant 73kW 1.8-litre petrol engine mated to a 60kW electric

motor and driven through a continuously variable automatic transmission.

Combined system output of 100kW is achieved with almost Prius-like fuel economy while generating low oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and virtually zero particulate matter emissions.

A selectable electric-vehicle mode will enable the Corolla hybrid hatch to be driven for up to two kilometres at speeds of up to around 45km/h with zero tailpipe

emissions, depending on the level of battery charge and driving conditions.

Corolla, which is now in its 50th year in the Australian market, has been the bestselling car for each of the past three years with a 103kW petrol engine available in sedan and hatch body styles.

The Corolla nameplate is the most successful in Toyota’s Australian range with more than 1.34 million sold to local customers.
