The designers have managed to blend style and ruggedness, it features the latest Mitsubishi ‘Dynamic Shield’ frontal treatment. The other dominant feature comes at the rear of the vehicle with elongated combination lights that look a bit like a pair of icicles running down the entire side of the tailgate. Pajero Sport includes a number of firsts for the Mitsubishi brand. These include eight-speed automatic
transmission; hill descent control; and an electronic parking brake. There’s also a new all-terrain control system. Inside there’s plenty of space for up to five occupants (it misses out on the third-row seats that its competitors have – although they may come later) with wide, supportive and comfortable seats all of which can be reclined. Entry to the front seats is helped by extra grab handles on the A-pillar. The steering wheel has reach and height adjustment. Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is offered in three variants: GLX ($45,000), GLS ($48,500) and Exceed ($52,750).
The GLX seats are cloth, GLS and Exceed get leather trim. Power comes from a 2.4-litre turbo-diesel that Pajero Sport shares with the latest Triton utility. The engine generates 133 kW of power at 3500 rpm and 430 Nm of torque at 2500 revs. The all-new Aisin eight-speed automatic has been specially developed for the Pajero Sport and includes an adaptive control system with features such as uphill and downhill control, and rapid kick-down control. Manual transmission which was an option in the Challenger is no longer offered.

Cascada is Holden’s new cruising convertible

ANOTHER new name on the Australian motoring scene, Holden Cascada is the convertible version of the Holden Astra. The cars are sourced from Holden’s General Motors affiliate, Opel. Opinions are divided on the material used for convertible roofs. In the last decade or so there was a move away from the traditional fabric top towards a solid retractable roof, the logic being that buyers wanted the perceived advantages of the looks and security of a coupe when the roof is closed. Opel / Holden followed this trend with the previous Astra Twin Top but has now reverted to the soft top roof that was used in the original Astra Convertible with the new Cascada. Like all convertibles it looks at its best – and attracts most looks – with the roof tucked away inside the boot. At a fraction under 4.7 metres Cascada is significantly longer than its competitors which include the convertible variants of Audi A3, BMW 1 Series, Mini Cooper, Renault Megane CC, and VW Golf. As such it can provide a level of comfort for four full-size passengers that its smaller rivals can’t match. In terms of boot space, Cascada’s 360 litres with the roof in place and 280 litres
HOLDEN CASCADA: It is an affordable cruiser either around town or on the highway. with it stored away is pretty good. There’s a 17-inch steel space saver spare wheel under the boot floor to save boot space. The roof has three layers and opens automatically in just 17 seconds and at speeds up to 50 km/h. Cascada uses the same 1.6-litre fourcylinder turbo-petrol engine as the sporty Astra GTC coupe with a handy 125 kW of power, and torque of 260 Nm from 1650 to 4500 revs. The only transmission is six-speed automatic, it does not have paddle shifters. That extra torque is welcome because, with a kerb weight of 1710 kg, Cascada is easily the heaviest car in its class.
Fuel consumption is listed at 7.5 litres per 100 kilometres - we averaged 9.1 L/100 km during our week-long test; 7.3 L/100 on the motorway and 10.1 around the suburbs. Cascada uses the latest Holden MyLink infotainment system displayed on a seveninch colour screen display (non-touch). Features include satellite navigation; Bluetoooth phone and audio streaming; apps such as Pandora, Stitcher and TuneIn Radio; and DAB+ digital radio. In addition to mandatory safety features such as airbags (dual front and side), ABS brakes and stability control Cascada also comes with hill start assist; dual Isofix child-seat anchorage; reversing camera;
rain sensing windscreen wipers; front and rear parking sensors; auto protector halogen headlights; daytime running lights and front fog lights. Other standard features include 18-inch alloy wheels; sports suspension; electric parking brake; leather trim perforated Siena seats; alloy sports pedals; cruise control; and dual zone air conditioning. Heated front seats and steering wheel provide an added incentive to drive with the roof down during the cooler months – often the best time for open-top driving. Cascada is nimble enough around town with only reasonable outside visibility with the roof up, obviously better with it down. It cruises comfortably on the motorway although rough rural roads can generate some scuttle shake. Otherwise ride quality is firm but comfortable. Its mass means that it is not as sporty as we’d like but steering response is predictable and safe with only a hint of understeer when pushed through corners. Holden Cascada is a welcome addition to the affordable convertible niche market and it compares well with its all-European rivals in terms of engine performance, interior space, features and price. It’s more a cruiser than a sports car but that’s what most of its potential buyers will have in mind.

The new auto plays a major part in lower fuel consumption. The official figure of 8.0 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined city/ highway cycle is a significant improvement on the 9.8 L/100 km from the 2.5-litre / five-speed auto in the Challenger. Pajero Sport comes with the Mitsubishi Super Select II 4WD system with four drive modes: standard two- and four-wheel drive (2H and 4H); then 4HLc which locks the centre differential for extra traction on snow or sand; and 4LLc which also locks the centre diff and uses low gears for extra torque. Switches between 2H and 4H can be done at speeds up to 100 km/h, all others need the vehicle to be stationary and in neutral. The new Off-Road Mode terrain control system provides four driving modes: Gravel; Mud/Snow; Sand; and Rock. The route didn’t include any significant rural backroads but we did do the remaining commute back to Sydney along the motorway where the Pajero
Sport felt like any other semi-luxury cruising SUV. Standard safety gear on all variants includes seven airbags (including driver’s knee ‘bag), ABS brakes with Brake Assist and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution; rear view camera; rear parking sensors; hill descent control; hill start assist; trailer stability assist and emergency stop signal. The GLS adds a differential lock; dusk sensing headlights; and rain sensing wipers. Added safety in the Exceed comes from Multiaround Monitor System that uses cameras to show a bird’s eye view around the vehicle; Blind Spot Warning; and Forward Collision Mitigation, a warning / braking system to reduce the risk of collisions. Exceed also gets a new safety feature called an Ultrasonic Misacceleration Mitigation System (appropriately enough abbreviated to UMS). The UMS system has been developed as a means to mitigate human error whereby the driver inadvertently operates the accelerator pedal
instead of the brake. It shares the same ultrasonic sensor systems as the Blind Spot Warning system and Corner Sensors as fitted to Exceed. Other standard features across the range include 18-inch alloy wheels; LED headlights and daytime running lights; keyless entry and push button start/stop; smartphone connectivity for Android Auto and Apple Car Play, and digital radio. In addition to the extra safety features the GLS adds leather trim and dual zone air conditioning while Exceed tops it off with an eight-speaker audio; power-adjustable and heated front seats; and rear-seat DVD entertainment system and 8-speaker audio. New Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is a highly impressive all-rounder. It has the looks, comfort and space to serve as an urban family workhorse or a long-distance holiday cruiser but then throw off the shackles and take on the most rugged terrain in confidence that it will emerge unscathed at the other end.
