Mazda CX-9 is a super cruiser By ALISTAIR KENNEDY weight, the latter contributing to better performance, lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions. For those needing the extra traction for towing or off-road capability new CX-9 is available with four-wheel drive. Changes in styling for the gen-two CX-9 aren’t that noticeable with a large version of the Mazda ‘family’ grille continuing to dominate the front of the vehicle, flanked by wider narrower headlights. There’s also a stylish rear spoiler. The window-line is quite high which could annoy younger rear seat passengers, not that children look out of car windows
anymore – far too much electronic gadgetry to occupy them nowadays. Although the new CX-9 is slightly shorter than the outgoing model it is marginally wider and taller and so provides extra interior passenger space. The centre row seats slide all the way forward to improve access to the rear pair of seats which, though higher than in the previous model, are best suited to children. There is a trade-off to the extra passenger space in that storage capacity is down from 267 litres to a measly 230 litres with all seats in place. This can expand to 810 litres with the third row seats folded and 1640 with all rear seats down. The quality of the interior is much
improved with a more sedan-like look to the dashboard layout and better quality materials and trim throughout. The seats are large and comfortable, those in the Sport have cloth trim and manual adjustment with the three higher grades getting leather trim, power adjustment, heating, and driver’s lumbar support. Although there are now four CX-9 variants (Sport, Touring, GT and Azami) all come with the same engine and transmission combination. The engine is a new 2.5-litre direct-injection turbocharged petrol unit that generates 170 kW of power at 5000 rpm and an impressive 420 Nm of torque at 2000 revs.

CX-9 is the largest model in Mazda’s Australian SUV range ahead of its compact CX-3 and mid-sized CX-5 siblings. The power output applies to standard unleaded or E10 fuel but can be increased to 186 kW with premium unleaded. Mazda Australia is claiming a 25 per cent improvement in fuel consumption which is no doubt accurate although the comparison point is a high 11.0 litres per 100 km from the previous CX-9’s 3.7-litre V6 guzzler. Nevertheless the published 8.4 L/100km from the new two-wheel drive CX-9 (8.8 litres with AWD) is quite impressive for such a large vehicle. We averaged around 10 L/100 km in our AWD GT. Transmission is by six-speed automatic that includes a sport mode, however, there are no paddle shifters. All four CX-9 variants come with the choice of front- or rear-wheel drive, the latter adding $4000 to the price. Connectivity is king in the modern car and keeping up with the constantly evolving range of electronic gadgetry for both driver assistance and in-car entertainment is crucial. The new CX-9 uses the latest version of the Mazda MZD Connect system to provide access to the internet, social media, email, Pandora, Stitcher and Aha as well as hands-free voice and text messaging through Bluetooth. All models get built-in satellite navigation while the GT and Azami models also DAB+ digital radio where available and a Premium Bose 294 watt audio system. All CX-9 models come with front, side and curtain airbags; enhanced ABS brakes; autonomous emergency braking; keyless push-button start/stop; dynamic stability control with roll control and trailer assist; emergency stop signal; hill start assist; two ISOFIX child restraint anchor points; rear parking sensors; reversing camera; and rear cross traffic alert. If you’re looking for extra safety features you’ll need to jump straight to the top of the CX-9 pile where the $59,390 Azami ($63,390 with AWD) which adds driver attention alert; forward obstruction warning; lane keeping assist; lane departure warning; and smart brake support. New Mazda CX-9 has been given a fivestar rating by ANCAP.

FIRST there was the Barina; then Barina Spark; now comes the Spark. Holden’s micro-car has come a long way, both in name and development, the latter much at the hands of Australian engineers. Major Holden engineering input in the new Spark included the tuning of steering and suspension, and the continuously variable automatic transmission specifically designed for Australian conditions. A stronger body has enabled engineers to tune ride and handling more precisely, for a greater feeling of control and refinement, also engendering a quieter ride. This was achieved during thousands of kilometres over months of extensive work at Holden’s Lang Lang proving ground and on public roads. On top of that, the new model incorporates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity across the range, all for a starting price of less than $14,000, plus on-road costs. On test was the top-of-therange Spark LT automatic, which can be had for $18,990, plus on-roads. New Holden Spark is sharper looking than the car it replaces and, thanks to a slightly longer wheelbase and a trim in height of about 40 mm, aerodynamic drag has been reduced, helping improve fuel efficiency. Inside, designers have matched the lowered roof height by adjusting the hip-point dimensions for the seats, maintaining the ample headroom of the superseded model and offering comparable spaciousness, together with improvements to the driving position. CarPlay and Android Auto phone projection. Siri Eyes Free and smartphone voice recognition software also allow drivers to give verbal commands so that, hopefully, their hands never leave the wheel. The new 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine serves up maximum power of 73 kW and peak torque of 128 Nm, which during numerous trips to South Korea by Holden engineers was matched with a continuously variable transmission to suit Australian conditions.
The result is a 16 per cent increase in power and up to 20 per cent more torque, together with noise and vibration improvements. Holden claims fuel consumption of 5.5 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined urban / highway cycle. Key to Spark’s maximum five-star safety rating is a number of key features including driver assistance controls such as electronic stability control, traction control and antilock braking; front, side and curtain airbags. There’s a rearview camera with park assist on the higher-spec LT model. Another important attribute is a highstrength steel safety cage capable of supporting a roof-load 3.92 times that of its own weight. The Spark is a comfortable, easy-tohandle vehicle with a level of technological tie-ups normally found only in vehicles of a more premium nature. Friends and family are never far from the car. However, for all its wizardry, there is no getting away from the fact this is a small vehicle, especially when it comes to a full complement of occupants and their gear. The cargo area is tiny (185 litres). Also, initially confusing are the rear doors with concealed handles. Headroom is impressive, while shoulder space remains adequate; legroom in the back is limited for the taller person. The Spark LT is only a cheapish car that on price is closing in on rivals in the segment above. Where Spark does shine is in its ability, via the latest technology, to become a big part of the owner’s lifestyle through connectivity with the outside world.

Hyundai Elantra SR Turbo By EWAN KENNEDY HYUNDAI has added to its sporty SR model range with the introduction of an Elantra SR four-door sedan. With a turbo-petrol engine producing more power than others in its class it features Australian tuned suspension and steering aimed at producing the sort of car that keen Australian drivers love. A starting price of $28,990 it certainly provides a lot of bang for your bucks. The 1.6-litre engine in the Elantra SR Turbo produces 150 kW of power, and 265 Nm of torque across a wide spread from just 1500 rpm and going all the way to 4500 revs. To achieve this it uses direct fuel injection, continuously variable timing on all valves, roller timing chain and antifriction coatings. Transmission to the front wheels is either through a six-speed manual or sevenspeed dual-clutch automatic. The latter has paddle-shifters mounted on the flat-bottomed multifunction steering wheel. Elantra SR Turbo automatic also has Hyundai’s Drive Mode Select system with Normal, Eco and Sport modes. This is not fitted to cars with a manual gearbox. Hyundai’s new Elantra SR Turbo debuts an advanced new-design platform shown at the recent Paris Motor Show. Interestingly, the platform as used by the Elantra SR Turbo has multi-link independent rear suspension, whereas a simpler torsion bar layout is used on the other models in the Elantra range.
SLEEK: The sleek appearance of the new Elantra SR works well. This platform was designed and developed in Europe and refined at the Nurburgring Nordschleife in Germany and at Hyundai’s Namyang R&D centre in South Korea. Its ride and handling was honed further in Australia by HMCA’s chassis and suspension tuning team. Local work involved months of exhaustive real-world testing over thousands of kilometres comprising every type of Australian road surface. Larger front brake discs (+25mm diameter and +2mm thickness) are part of the SR Turbo package. Style-wise the SR has a deeper front
bumper and radiator grille, with pianoblack surrounds and a red Turbo badge. It also has revised taillights, a full body kit and rides on twin-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels. A power operated sunroof is part of the package. The driver’s seat is 10-way electrically adjustable (including two-way adjustable lumbar support). Unusually, the front passenger seat is height adjustable. Both front seats offer three-stage heating. Infotainment is provided by a 7.0-inch touchscreen audio system with MP3, digital iPod, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Hyundai’s active and passive safety features include sophisticated electronic stability control features, blind spot detection, lane change assist and rear cross traffic alert. Elantra has six airbags and achieved the maximum five-star ANCAP safety rating. Prices have been released with the SR Turbo six-speed manual selling for $28,990 and the seven-speed dual clutch automatic for $31,290. Metallic or Mica paint is a $495 option. New lease of life for Holden convertible By DEREK OGDEN A CONVERTIABLE has been launched on the back of the Holden Astra range - it comes with the stand-alone name Cascada and as a single model, priced at $41,990 plus on-road costs. A limited number of 50 special Cascada Launch Edition vehicles were made available to celebrate the return of the convertible body style to the Holden range. Buyers are spoilt with the luxury of premium Nappa leather appointed and ventilated front seats and a leather sports steering wheel. Other special treats include 20-inch alloy wheels, adaptive forward lighting and Bi-Xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lamps. Manufactured in Europe, the new Astra and its Cascada cousin are both designed and engineered at the Opel Russelsheim base in Germany. The Cascada has the classic looks of a four-seater convertible adapted to modernday use of materials. The sharp front shows off the latest styling in the way the projector headlamps, daytime running lights and front foglamps flank the robust radiator grille, blending into fenders unadorned with unnecessary decoration. Cascada rolls on 18-inch alloy wheels, with a 17-inch steel space-saver. Depending on whether it’s glass half full or half empty, the cabin is a four-seater or 2+2. gives the car its get up and go, quietly at first and under urging to the tune of a throaty engine note. The sports suspension is up to coping with most conditions found on sealed roads Down Under at legal speeds, while there is minimum body flexing due to the use of high-strength structural materials. Also a bonus from turbo technology is the Cascada’s fuel economy, which on test clocked 6.1 litres per 100 kilometres on the open road and a surprisingly frugal 10.5 litres per 100 kilometres in city and suburb driving.
