Toyota Prado gets new turbo-diesel

TOYOTA has launched the first leg of an engine trifecta with its all-new 2.8-litre turbo four-cylinder diesel power plant.

The impressively quiet, yet torquey oil burner makes its debut in a mid-life upgrade of the Prado 4WD, with the HiLux workhorse to come followed by an all-new model, the Toyota Fortuner SUV, both due in dealerships in October.

This engine replaces the 3.0-litre turbo-diesel.

dominated since being released, and looks set to continue.

Toyota launched the upgraded Prado out of Canberra with an off-road component at the Toyota LandCruiser Owners Club facility at Willowglen, DURXQG NP IURP WKH QDWLRQV FDSLWDO ,W ZDV KHUH WKDW 3UDGR FRQ² UPHG LW ZDV DV JRRG RII URDG DV LW LV UH² QHG RQ the road.

Despite diesel Prado commanding 98.8 per cent of sales, Toyota will continue to sell the petrol 4.0-litre V6 variant to ensure Prado does not lose sales to petrol 4WD competitors.

It will also continue to offer a manual in GX and GXL variants – a six speed

– for those who prefer to swap gears themselves.

Unfortunately, the upgrade did not address two other issues: towing rate remains at 2500 kg – well below the accepted norm of 3000 kg in the segment; and a rear diff lock is only available on the top of the line Prado Kakadu.

It is not even available as an option on the rest of the Prado stable – vehicles more likely to be taken off-road than the luxury $80,000+ Kakadu.

Toyota Australia executive director of sales and marketing, Tony Cramb, said the towing issue was one of Toyota being a conservative company.

Australian buyers would be taking a risk to exceed the 2500 kg limit as any accident or mechanical breakdown could void the vehicle warranty or insurance claim.

Towing issues aside Prado is well placed to continue its dominance in the large 4WD segment with the inclusion of this quiet turbo diesel.

Fuel economy gains of around 13 per cent are claimed by Toyota thanks to a low engine weight, better combustion HI² FLHQF\ DQG OHVV LQWHUQDO IULFWLRQ Prado also gets a diesel particulate ² OWHU ZKLFK UHVXOWV LQ ORZHU HPLVVLRQV and Euro 5 emission compliance.

Other engine improvements include a chain rather than belt drive, the introduction of a counterbalance shaft for improved vibration management.

About the only time you can detect it’s a diesel is outside the vehicle at idle.

Toyota claim 7.9 litres/100 km for manual variants and 8.0 litres/100 km from the six-speed auto.

Prado’s appearance remains the same as does the suspension and line up with GLHVHO RQO\ *; DV D ² YH RU VHYHQ VHDWHU and seven-seat GXL, VX and Kakadu.

Ford Focus prepares for sales battle FORD Australia was given the honour of hosting the Asian media launch of the facelifted Focus which we recently attended and then got to drive the Focus in Adelaide.

Sadly, Ford will cease manufacturing cars in this country next year, instead becoming a full importer.

Ford Australia engineers and designers continue to be a major part of the global Ford empire and our local guys and gals had input into the new Focus and are known to be working on many other future Ford models.

Though Ford referred to this latest Focus as “the new Focus”, during the design and engineering and styling presentations it’s actually a solid facelift of WKH PRGHO WKDW ² UVW ZHQW RQ sale here in 2011.

Every visible component in front of the windscreen has been changed.

The most noticeable change is probably the sharper squared-off shape of the front foglight housings, but also note the slimmer headlights and the slightly sleeker slope of the bonnet.

FORD FOCUS: The facelifted model has exceptionally neat frontal appearance.

Inside, the basic shape remains but detailed changes to the instruments, controls and trim give it a slightly more elegant look and feel.

The infotainment system in Focus is the latest Sync2 unit, which lets the driver operate the audio system, satellite navigation and a linked smartphone with voice commands.

It also accesses the

climate control air conditioning.

Aiming to give the Focus a more upmarket image Ford Australia has taken the interesting decision to drop the lower cost Ambiente model – the range now starting with the Focus Trend that was previously a mid-range contender.

DQG ² YH GRRU KDWFKEDFN Ford Australia has rationalised the Focus range, pulling the turbodiesel off the import list and replacing the non-turbo 1.6-litre petrol powerplant with a new design 1.5-litre turbo-petrol, EcoBoost in Ford speak.

This engine produces 132 kW of power, and 240 Nm of torque with a huge spread that runs all the way

between 1600 and 5000 revs.

Also new is a conventional torque converter six-speed automatic transmission, this replaces the dual-clutch unit that has proven rather troublesome according to our contacts behind the scenes at Ford.

A six-speed manual gearbox is offered as a price leader, but only on the Focus Trend hatchback.

Turbo lag is minimal thanks to the compact design of the cylinder head and exhaust manifold, some delay is inevitable but once the little Ford powerplant gets up to speed and into its torque band it has decent performance.

The new automatic transmission works nicely and quickly senses the driver’s needs - which is just as well because manual overrides are by way of a silly little vertically mounted switch on the gear lever that’s not easy to use.

Handling, always a strong point of the European designed Fords, is excellent.

There’s a lovely feel through the steering wheel and the car can be steered by way of the throttle if you’re into enthusiastic driving.

We have long said the Ford Focus deserves at least a podium place in its class in the sales race, but has struggled for reasons we really can’t fathom.

Will this latest model improve its standing?

It certainly has the credentials to do so.
