It is super easy to navigate although the graphics could be a touch better.

You will have to access sat nav through Apple CarPlay using your phone.

Bluetooth connectivity is good, the speakers work well enough and there are

two USB inputs and a HDMI input in the centre console bin.

There’s digital radio, and touchscreen media system with Apple CarPlay.

The Pajero Sport is driven by a 2.4.-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine which generates 133kW of power and 430Nm of torque.

All-new gen-three X3

FOURTEEN years ago BMW was ahead of its time when it launched the X3 SUV into the prestige car market.

Seven years later it introduced the second generation. Now a further seven years on the gen-three X3 from BMW has arrived in Australia.

Four years ago Australian Calvin Luk, already one of BMW’s best regarded stylists, took his seat at the computer screen to come up with his thoughts on the all-new X3.

Recently he sat at his screen again and fascinated we Australian motoring journos with quickly drawn strokes to illustrate how he and others reached the ²QLVKHG VKDSH In his words he “took it to the gymâ€? to give the X3 a tougher look than ever before.

All-new BMW X3 is longer, wider and taller than before and sits on a greater wheelbase. ,QGHHG LWV ODUJHU WKDQ WKH ²UVW generation BMW X5.

The new X3’s bonnet, front guards, and front doors are aluminium to keep weight down.

At the same time attention was given to underbody aero, even comprising wind GHÂłHFWRUV WR DOWHU WKH ÂłRZ DURXQG WKH suspension.

This attention to detail makes the new model slipperier, therefore more economical and an emitter of fewer emissions.

There’s slightly more space inside than in the superseded X3, the new one

The rear seat has a 40:20:40 split and the seatbacks can be lowered remotely from the tailgate rather than you having to do so though the back doors, handy when you’re carting bulky items.

Seats are comfortable and allow for wider shoulders but taller drivers may ²QG WKHLU KHDGV D ELW FORVHU WR WKH FDELQ roof than anticipated.

The 60:40 second row offers its own comforts, more for the outboard seats than the person in the middle.

Head is acceptable and leg room a bit more so but would have been better still if the second row was able to slide forward and back as it does in some competitors.

Access to the third row is through a tumble and tuck of the second row seats.

It is a bit tricky but the kids think it’s an adventure.

BMW Australia’s product manager Ryan Begg explained that there’s a lot of technology trickling down from the new 5 Series range into the X3.

It also has lifted details in the premium feel from its larger cousin.

Inside the cabin there’s some aluminium trim and clever ‘X’ embossing in interesting places.

Gesture control over various functions is likely to be a popular option, as is ambient lighting.

Sports seats are standard in all variants sold in Australia, but there’s the option of going for comfort if you’re more interested in easy touring than getting the best from the little Bimmer.

BMW xDrive20d turbo-diesel produces 140 kW of power and 400 Nm to torque.

The six-cylinder xDrive30d has a handy 195 kW and a big 620 Nm of torque.

All models run an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Manual gearboxes are a thing of the past in this class of vehicle.

While prices are up, a lot more gear has been added to keep the X3 competitive in what is now one of the hardest fought of all automotive sales arenas.

Noise intrusion is well masked and the latest BMW X3 sounds and feels like a vehicle from the next class up.

Handling is very good in the traditional BMW manner.

All the more so when you remember this is a family oriented SUV, the X3 never looked like getting into trouble.

5LGH FRPIRUW ZDV ²QH RQ VPRRWKHU roads but rough n’ ready backroads made themselves felt to a greater extent we had anticipated.

All-in-all the all-new X3 is a pleasant SUV - BMW likes to use the term SAV, for Sports Activity Vehicle - that will work well for moderately well-off families with a two or three pre-teen children.

„ FAMILY FRIENDLY: The Pajero Sport makes sense for families needing a seven-seater There is great storage throughout the Pajero Sport with cup holders and doorbins, deep console bins and map pockets and for those in the third row, an XQGHU ³RRU KLGH\ KROH LI QHHGHG There are side mounted air vents for the last two rows while front seat occupants can enjoy dual-zone climate control.

Controls are within easy reach, the leatherwrapped steering is nice in the hand and the cabin maintains a spacious feel.

Instrumentation is simple but effective although a digital speedo wouldn’t go astray.

A rotary dial operates the multi-mode driving system and allows you to choose from 2WD and 4WD for the bitumen or high and low-speed 4WD for off-road forays.

The Pajero Sport offers an easy, fairly UH²QHG GULYH ZLWK D QLFH EOHQG RI SRZHU and sensibility.

Given its real off-road capability it is

not as compliant or gentle as those SUVs made for the bitumen but it is no illmannered beast either.

There is a fair bit of body lean if pushed hard through corners and lag low down in the range but this Pajero Sport has something about it. ,W LV FRQ²GHQW DQG PRUH ³HHW IRRWHG than its size suggests and the revised suspension with soft riding coils keeps the wallowing to a minimum.

You can usher it through roundabouts and around shopping centre carparks and is quiet enough too that you can hold a conversation.

The Pajero Sport is more than adept on very ordinary secondary roads, accomplished in getting over ruts and irregularities with little trouble.

The spare is mounted under the wagon which means you don’t have to remove everything from the boot when changing a tyre.

The Pajero Sport is pretty economical too and we recorded 8.3L/100km during our week which is close enough to the RI²FLDO / NP WR QRW VSOLW KDLUV 0LWVXELVKL RIIHUV D ²YH \HDU NP warranty with free roadside assist for that period.

There is capped-price servicing for four years or 60,000km. Intervals are 12 months or 15,000km with the average cost at just over $520 per service.

The Pajero Sport makes great sense for those families that need the practicality of seven seats, may want to tow and will venture off-road.
