$2000 to the price. The turbocharged automatic (our test car) slips under the 30-grand mark, while the range-topping all-wheel drive version sells for $33,990, up $1000.

Series II also comes with Suzuki’s fiveyear capped price servicing and, for the first time in a Suzuki, incorporates roadside assist.

STYLING A stand-out five-slot radiator grille, with dominant brand label ‘S’, and LED headlamps with blue trimmed projectors, plus daytime running lights, announce the arrival of the Series II Vitara in no uncertain terms.

Stylish 17-inch alloy wheels filling out the arches complete a sporty picture.

add even further to the exclusive look of the small SUV. INTERIOR Seats covered with premium suede, embossed with geometric patterns produce a semi-luxurious finish, while an analogue clock centre dash, normally in the domain of luxury vehicles, adds a further premium feature to the cabin.

A new soft-pad instrument panel and front sliding armrest exudes quality and convenience and a 4.2-inch multi-information colour LCD display keeps the driver in touch with the car’s performance and operating systems.

Ŷ IN BETWEEN: Now there are four different types of Nissan's big selling Qashqai.

Nissan introduces Qashqai ST+ NISSAN has introduced an additional model to its Qashqai range. Qashqai ST+ sits between the entry grade Nissan Qashqai ST and the higher-spec Qashqai ST-L. At the top of the four-model range is the Ti. Qashqai ST+ has all of the features of the ST but adds privacy glass; a 7-inch touchscreen with digital radio, satellite navigation with traffic alert; a 360 degree Intelligent Around-View monitor with moving object detection; and power-folding and heated door mirrors.

Qashqai has 430 litres of rear cargo volume, increasing to 1598 litres with the rear seats down.

ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS There are no mechanical changes of note. Performance and fuel efficiency are possible with the latest in turbocharging technology in the Vitara Turbo’s 1.4 litre Boosterjet four-cylinder engine mated with a six-speed automatic.

SAFETY The body is designed to absorb and disperse energy during a collision.

Six airbags and electronic stability control (ESC) combine for a five-star ANCAP safety rating. The ESC automatically adjust engine and brake operation to help keep the driver in control in all conditions.

Turbo models also include the latest advanced preventive safety features includ-

ing advanced forward detection, which can help avoid an accident, plus autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, weaving alert, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control and rear cross traffic alert, all worth the price on entry.

Front and rear parking sensors warn the driver audio-visually of obstacles in the way.

DRIVING The six-speed automatic transmission is in tune with the power delivery of the engine that's carried over from the previous Vitara model. Shift paddles add an extra dimension for the enthusiastic driver.

With 95 RON petrol recommended, fuel

consumption of 5.9 litres per 100 kilometres on the urban / highway cycle is claimed by the manufacturer. On test the Turbo recorded 7.4 litres per 100 kilometres in city driving and 4.6 on the motorway.

Seats are comfortable and reasonably supportive. Advertised as a five-seater, cabin space would suit four-up only on a long journey but around town five occupants may be a bit squashed.

With all seat backs in place, there is 375 litres of boot space 710 litres with them folded. The boot has a removable parcel shelf and there’s a variable height floor which can take flat items out of view.

Cabin storage is good, with two cup hold-

ers in the front door pockets and two in the centre console, and two small shelves in front of the gear lever. The spacious centre console makes up for a rather small glovebox.

SUMMING UP The Vitara Series II Turbo earns its place between the Grand Vitara and Jimny at the centre of Suzuki’s SUV range. It’s well specified, has a striking street presence and harbours no pretensions to be a genuine offroader. That’s for the AllGrip 4WD.

By EWAN KENNEDY NEW Land Rover Defender was revealed in lightly-disguised prototype form on April 30, exactly 71 years to the day since the original Land Rover was shown at the Amsterdam Motor Show in 1948.

It probably won’t go on sale until the final quarter of 2019 but development testing is well under way, with the prototype fleet having just passed the 1.2 million kilometre mark.

A camouflaged prototype model is preparing to embark on field-testing with global Land Rover conservation partner, Tusk Trust, a non-profit organisation. It will be put to work at the Borana Conservancy in Kenya to support vital conservation work in its final phase of field testing.

Defender prototype will tow heavy loads, wade through rivers and carry supplies across unforgiving terrain in a series of real-world trials at the 14,000-hectare reserve.

By the time the new Defender makes its public debut later this year, it will have passed more than 45,000 individual tests in some of the most extreme environments on earth. Land Rover engineers have taken the test fleet to the 50-degree heat of the desert, the sub 40-degree cold of the Arctic, as well as up to 10,000ft altitude of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado to ensure the new Defender will take everyday life in its stride, for even its most adventurous customers.

Somewhat oddly, on-road dynamics were tested at the famed Nurburgring facility in Germany.

New Defender will be built at Land Rover’s recently opened manufacturing facility in Nitra, Slovakia.

Celebration of four-wheel driving

By EWAN KENNEDY MORE than 100 used and bruised 4x4 vehicles in full camp mode will be on display at Australia's National Motor Museum’s grounds in Birdwood, South Australia.

The one day event will be held on Sunday, May 19 from 11am till 3pm. It's part of the inaugural ARB and Battery World Celebration of Four-Wheel Driving.

“There will be so many people, vehicles and campsites - it will be like a major expedition is about to commence,” said Museum director, Paul Rees. “Most of South Australia's 4WD clubs will be represented and they'll be getting into the spirit of things arriving on Saturday and setting up and staying overnight in Birdwood.

Visitors on Sunday will be able to see first- hand how authentic outback adventure set-ups look and operate and talk with club members,” said Rees.

“We’ve always been an outdoor nation,” said one of the organisers, Trevor Manning.

“The growth in four-wheel driving and outback adventuring in Australia has been increasing for years, but it is rare for the 4WD community to get together in such numbers.

“There will be some very special rigs and camps set up on site and I know that many of us 4WD enthusiasts will be eager to check each other’s rigs out as much as for those who will be visiting the museum for the day,” said Manning.
