Haval H6 LV FRPSHWHQW ²UVW DWWHPSW

By EWAN KENNEDY THE Haval marque is still all-but unknown in Australia.

Which comes as no surprise as the Haval H6, the subject of this weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s road test, only arrived downunder in September 2016.

Haval is the SUV division of Great Wall Motors and given the ever increasing popularity of SUVs worldwide the H6 is a number one seller in the midsize segment in its home country of China. So huge LV WKDW PDUNHW WKDW WKH + ZDV WKH ²IWK biggest seller in its class globally during 2016.

7KH ²UVW *UHDW :DOO +DYDO + ZDV launched in China in 2011 and is about to be replaced by a new generation that will be previewed at the Auto Shanghai motor show on April 19 this year. The Australian launch date is yet to be set.

But back to the current Haval H6 Lux, the model weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve spent the past week in is well-equipped in the Chinese manner and at $44,990 driveaway is nicely priced.

The Lux is the topline model and has 19-inch alloy wheels, dual zone climate control, keyless entry and start, and heated â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Comfort-Tekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; seats front and rear. The front seats are power adjusted.

Haval H6 Lux also has a large panoramic sunroof, adaptive Xenon headlamps, foglights, front and rear parking sensors, rearview camera and blind spot monitoring.

Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also a lower cost, $38,990 driveaway, Haval H6. Somewhat oddly for a base model it comes with the tag of H6 Premium. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s marketing for you.

The Premium gets 17-inch alloys and does without the fancy seats, the sunroof and has a lower spec sound system.

Styling is competent without breaking away from current thinking among conservative SUV buyers. It does have a touch of Europe to the shape, which is no surprise as it was penned by Frenchman Pierre Leclercq.

The H6 is driven through a six-speed dual-clutch automatic, but only to the front wheels thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no 4WD. The importer did consider bringing in a H6 4WD, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only a manual gearbox and a turbo-diesel engine. Given that manuals are virtually unknown in this class in Australia it made sense not to import the diesel. The second generation is likely to offer an automatic 4WD H6.

Build quality is pretty good, certainly much better than that of some of the old Great Wall Motors cars we examined a few \HDUV DJR 3DQHO ²W LV UHDVRQDEO\ WLJKW WKH surfaces are smooth and competent and WKH SDLQW ²QLVK ORRNV WR EH EOHPLVK IUHH ,QVLGH HYHU\WKLQJ ²WV QHDWO\ DQG WKH styling shows more oomph than the exterior.

Our test car had an engine that was reluctant to get moving from a standstill,

hesitating for a couple of seconds at times.

The problem may have been in the oldstyle double-clutch gearbox rather than in the engine. The vehicle is due for a service soon after we return it, so we can ask questions afterwards.

After it was up and running engine response is good, albeit with the usual turbo-lag of engines in this class. Once past the laggy stage it has plenty of poke and overtaking is clean and easy.

Note that the new Haval H6 has a newdesign Getrag seven-speed DCT, so the problems we experienced should cease to exist.

Interior space is good, with good support from the front seats. The back seats have good legroom and can carry three adults without too much of a squeeze.

Comfort is generally good, but some rough road surfaces (sealed, not unsealed) did create plenty of tyre noise.

Maximum power output is at 147 kW, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s maximum torque of 500 Nm between 2000 and 2200 rpm. Much emphasis has been put on keeping the unit quiet and smooth running. It has a Euro 5

Handling is safe enough, but hardly on the sporting side. Not a problem for most potential buyers, but try for yourself on your private pre-purchase road test.

The only other problem in the H6 was a warning light for an airbag on permanently.

Again, that will be reported on prior to the service.

Key safety features include daytime running lamps, IsoFix child seats, six airbags, including full-length side curtain units. Bosch supplied the ESP with Brake Assist and Electronic Brake Distribution.

A Tyre Pressure Monitoring System makes life cleaner at service stations.

Every Haval H6 imported to Australia has D ²YH \HDU NP ZDUUDQW\ DQG ²YH years roadside assistance.

Further information about the new second generation Haval H6 will be released when the vehicle is launched at Auto Shanghai 2017, which will run from April 19-28.

The work done by engineers on the Colorado Duramax 2 engine include the ²WWLQJ RI DQ (QJLQH $FRXVWLF 3DFN 7KLV KDV a metal one-piece timing cover (previously a two-piece plastic one), new injectors, oil pan insulators and relocation of the twin balance shafts. Structural changes to the engine, as well as fuel injection upgrades also play their part.

The result is cabin ambience on a par with many sedans and a degree of stressless driving on and off the bitumen. The latter at the behest of a transfer case electronically activated by a knob on the centre console.

Two-wheel high, four-wheel high, or four-wheel low modes can be engaged, while â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;neutralâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; ensures no drive goes to the wheels.

Many tradies these days value their work vehicle as a weekend family recreation vehicle, using a trailer for work gear during the week. Towing ability, therefore, climbs the shopping list when buying a pick-up.

The Coloradoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s towing capacity of a braked trailer is 3500 kg, the unbraked capacity is the legal maximum of 750 kg. With a trailer hooked up, the gross combined mass for vehicle, payload and braked trailer combined is 6000 kg.

With the tailgate down, the loading lip is relatively high and requires quite a lift into the tray. Sadly, some people also had a struggle to snap on the soft tonneau cover.

There may be a knack but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not obvious.

With the toughness of a small truck and the ride and good handling thanks to the Aussie engineering connection, the new Holden Colorado carries a genuine homeland appeal.
