Holden Barina THE solid push towards the future of Holden continues.

Long after the company shuts down its Australian factories Holden will continue as a major part of the GM global empire.

As a strong example, Holden Barina for 2017 has just received a facelift and tailtuck, interior enhancements, an upgraded infotainment system and added safety features.

A great deal of the design of the Holden Barina was carried out by Australians, working both locally and overseas to the extent that the car is being promoted as the “GM Australia-designed 2017 Holden Barina”.

By EWAN KENNEDY Melbourne have been adopted by other GM markets using the Chevrolet Sonic nameplate and will be seen in tens of thousands on the road in dozens of countries.

Justin Thompson, GM Australia’s exterior design manager tells us Barina’s new front was inspired by that of the Chevrolet Camaro.

It has a new front grille and DRL housings.

We’re not sure it’s ever going to be mistaken for a Camaro, but the smallest Holden certainly looks attractive.

projection on all models.

These are controlled through a 7.0-inch colour touchscreen.

Holden Barina continues to earn a five-star ANCAP safety rating.

To the existing safety features the 2017 model also gets rear park assist and rearview camera as standard across the range.

As before, the Barina range is sold only as a five-door hatchback.

For 2017 it’s offered in two variants: LS and LT. Barina LS has 16-inch alloy wheels and automatic headlamps.

The LT gets 17-inch alloys, push button locking and starting, leather trimmed

steering wheel, ‘Sportec’ seat trim and heated front seats.

There have been no mechanical changes and Barina is powered by a 1.6-litre 85 kW petrol engine, mated either to a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission in the LS and auto only in the LT. The 2017 Barina is on sale now and is part of the Holden Lifetime Capped Price Service program.

We’ve yet to get behind the wheel of a 2017 Barina, but will arrange a road test as soon as possible and publish our usual full review.

Coupe the overture to key in Lexus theme

By DEREK OGDEN IT is generally recognised that Dame Nellie Melba made more comebacks to the operatic stage than a well-used boomerang.

What is not so well known is that the prima donna was one of the first female car owners in Australia.

The redoubtable Dame took to motoring (with a chauffeur) so enthusiastically she kept motor cars on three continents – an electric Brougham in Europe, a couple of Pierce-Arrows in the US, a Type AX Renault and later a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost in Australia.

How appropriate that Lexus should choose Coombe Cottage, Lilydale, in the Yarra Valley, the diva’s home Down Under, to unveil the LC 500 coupe, which with its LC 500h hybrid cousin, will make its debut Down Under next year.

The wraps were taken off the stunning four-seater flagship at this year’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit, and is being hailed by Lexus as the strongest ever statement of where its future lies.

The 5.0-litre twin-cam V8 LC 500 will be the first Lexus underpinned by the company’s new Global Architecture Luxury (GA-L) platform, the most torsionally rigid produced by the company, and is a blueprint for all future front-engine, rear-drive models.

It will also feature the world’s first 10-speed automatic transmission in a luxury vehicle.

Lexus claims a zero to 100 km/h time of less than 4.5 seconds.

Lexus’ chief branding officer and master driver, Akio Toyoda, who was integral in the development of the production model since it was first shown as the LF-LC concept at the Detroit Motor Show in 2012, says: “A few years ago we decided to guide the future of the brand with products that had more passion and distinction in the luxury market.

“This flagship luxury coupe’s proportions, stunning design and performance make a strong statement about our brands’ emotional direction, and will grow the Lexus luxury appeal globally.”

First impressions show the designers and engineers hit it off, with the LC 500 incorporating many of the design elements from the show car.

With an athletic aerodynamic shape topped off by a sleek carbon fibre roof the car creates a low, wide stance that’s highly functional.

Up front the Lexus signature spindle grille is outlined on three sides by chrome and a radical new 3-D mesh design.

The L-shaped daytime running lights support a new triple LED headlamp unit, which includes one of the thinnest projectors to allow for a low bonnet with short front overhang.

Venting is not just for show, playing a part in aerodynamic stability of the vehicle as well as cooling.

In profile the designers have come up with a sleekly sloping roofline and rear overhangs that feature slim, multi-layered tail lamps conveying the ‘L’ motif.

A rear diffuser and optional active rear spoiler help manage airflow at speed for the vehicle.

LUXURY FLAGSHIP: Lexus LC 500 has an aerodynamic shape topped off by a sleek carbon-fibre roof.

ANY WAY YOU LOOK AT IT: Lexus has it all inside and out, from above and below.

It rolls on 20-inch cast aluminium or optional 21-inch forged aluminium wheels.

The front seats offer a high level of support and comfort for long drives, while optional sport seats offer added bolstering and lateral support during fast cornering.

With a sharper, more refined driving experience on the menu the development team also sought to maintain a ride quality befitting a flagship luxury sports coupe.

Engineers focused most of the mass, including engine and occupants, in a position more centralised, and lower in the chassis to improve the centre of gravity.

With no spare wheel, the LC 500 relies on run-flat tyres in a bid to reduce weight and help shorten overhangs.

The 12-volt battery is in the boot to help redistribute weight.

This car has Lexus’s most intensive use of high-strength steel resulting in enhanced rigidity and a close-to-ideal 52:48 front / rear weight distribution.

Particular attention was paid to the multi-

link suspension to allow for control of the smallest driver input and road conditions.

A dual ball joint arrangement helps to create a more precise steering response, while grip is optimised by Michelin Sport tyres - 245/40 RF21, front; 275/35 RF21, rear.

Heart of the new LC 500 comes from the proven, high-revving naturally aspirated 5-litre V8 found in the RC F and GS F, chosen for its smooth, linear throttle response and spirited engine sound.

The all-aluminium, 32-valve V8’s output is put at 351kW and 530Nm. The new engine is built for durability with lightweight, high-strength forged connecting rods and titanium valves that allow it to excel at high revs, while special exhaust sound-control valves, activated at start-up, help to provide a rebellious growl on coming to life.

For the first time in a luxury car, the LC 500 features a newly developed 10-speed automatic transmission, with shift times rivalling those of a dual clutch system,

putting power to the rear wheels.

We are told the unit is smaller and lighter than some eight-speed automatics.

The flagship coupe will introduce the 2017 Lexus Multimedia package and optional Mark Levinson audio.

A new premium Pioneer system comes as standard.

The LC 500 will also boast the company’s renowned safety technology, Lexus Safety System+, which incorporates a pre-collision system, which helps prevent or mitigate collisions; lane keep assist, which stops vehicles wandering out of their lanes; automatic high beam, which provides optimal forward visibility during night driving and all-speed active cruise control.

Lexus Australia says the new LC 500 will be launched here next year and will be available powered by the high-revving 5.0-litre V8 petrol engine, or a highperformance highly efficient hybrid model featuring the revolutionary Multi Stage Hybrid System.

REFRESHED: The big, open grille dominates the front of the popular Mazda3.

Mazda3 just keeps on keeping on MAZDA has been enjoying steady growth over the past decade on the Australian new vehicle market overtaking both Holden and Ford on its way to currently sitting second in the overall sales hierarchy, behind Toyota.

The star performer throughout this period has been the Mazda3 small hatch and sedan which has been having a ding-dong battle with Toyota Corolla for top spot, initially in its category but in the past few years as Australia’s overall biggest-seller.

Now into its third generation, launched here in January 2014, the Mazda3 first went on sale in Australia in April 2004, replacing the popular Mazda 323.

In a very clever marketing move this new simplified naming format ensures that the word ‘Mazda’ is effectively used in every reference to the car.

Mazda3 was given a refresher in July 2016 including a mild facelift together with changes to the steering and suspension systems and additional safety equipment.

The exterior changes include a redesigned grille and wing with slimmer headlights that are either halogen or LED headlamps depending on the model.

LED foglamps are standard on all models above the entry level Neo. Inside, there are changes to the decorative areas of the trim while the side ‘wings’ on the touchscreen display panel are larger and easier to read.

There’s good interior space front and rear.

Boot capacity is 408 litres.

There are six Mazda3 variants, each available in either five-door hatchback or four-door sedan bodies.

In ascending price order they are Neo, Maxx, Touring, SP25; SP25 GT and SP25 Astina.

Prices start at $20,490 for a manual Neo and run through to $35,490 for a SP25 Astina automatic.

There is no price differential between hatch and sedan.

There are two engine options.

Neo, Maxx and Touring grades are powered by a 2.0-litre petrol with 114 kW of power and 200 Nm of torque; the sportier SP25, SP25 GT and SP25 use a 2.5-litre petrol engine with 138kW and 250Nm. Lack of demand saw the previous 2.2-litre turbo-diesel dropped from the range in January 2014.

All models offer the choice of sixspeed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.

Mazda3 has a long list of standard safety equipment.

In addition to the usual multiple airbags, enhanced ABS braking and stability / traction control all models have rear parking sensors; whiplash-minimising front seats; hill start assist; and IsoFix child seat anchor points.

Also standard in all models are G-Vectoring Control (GVC) and Smart City Brake Support-Forward (SCBS).

The G-Vectoring Control system improves

chassis balance by sensing movements of the steering wheel and modifying the amount of torque to each of the front wheels and changing the amount of grip that’s required.

Systems that use sensors and/or cameras to either prevent of reduce the impact of forward collisions are becoming more common.

Each car company uses a different name and Mazda has chosen Smart City Brake Support-Forward (SCBS-F) for its camerabased system.

Fortunately the generic name of automatic emergency braking is now gaining popularity.

All Mazda3 variants above the base Neo also get a similar system that acts in the same way to reduce damage while reversing (SCBS-R), as well as a reversing camera.

These models also get the very useful Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) that identifies approaching cars when reversing out of parking spots and Blind Spot Monitoring.

The highest-spec models also add features such as Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR); Smart Brake Support (SBS); LaneKeep Assist (LAS); Driver Attention Alert (DAA); adaptive headlights; and radar cruise control.

Our Mazda3 test car was the manual mid-spec Maxx.

Despite its sleek styling entry and exit doesn’t require too much bending and scraping.

The front seats are firm but comfortable with good lateral support.

Although most commuters will no doubt opt for the convenience of an automatic transmission we enjoyed the extra control of the car’s six-speed manual.

It has a nice short shift pattern and the clutch is light enough for the numerous changes required around the urban jungle.

The car cruised smoothly and comfortably on the motorway segment of our test.

On the rural back roads we had great fun moving through the gears over some undulating and winding terrain.

The steering is well-weighted and responsive.

The extra stability from the new G-Vectoring Control system means that there’s less movement of the steering wheel needed to turn-in.

Fuel consumption from the manual hatch is listed at 5.9 litres on the combined urban/highway cycle.

We averaged in the low sevens during our week-long test.

Mazda3 combines great looks both inside and out with capable performance, comfort and very good value for money.

Add a large array of safety equipment and it’s no surprise that it has been selling its socks off for more than a decade.
