Â„ JAGUAR XE: Its stunning shape will create plenty of sales. yourself then judge us. However, driving is marred by thick windscreen pillars that blocked too many times during our climb up the mountains behind Cairns and Port Douglas. Comfort is surprisingly good considering the fact that the suspension GHÂ˛ QLWHO\ OHDQV LQ WKH GLUHFWLRQ RI sportiness. Jaguar XE in Australia is powered by four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engines in two different stages of tune, producing 147 kW of power and 280 Nm of torque, or 170 kW / 340 Nm,then thereâ€™s the supercharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol with 250 kW and an enjoyable 450 Newton metres. Borrowed from the F-Type, the supercharged V6 XE S is capable of doing the 0-100 km/h acceleration test in just 5.1 seconds.

Those seeking big torque and small consumption can buy an ultra-modern turbo-diesel, again a four-cylinder unit displacing 2.0 litres. It gives you 132 kilowatts and torque of 450 Nm. The latter spreads from 1750 to 2500 revs. All Jaguar XE models imported to Australia drive the rear wheels through a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. A six-speed manual is sold in some markets but none will be imported to Australia, not even on special order. The model range starts with the $60,400 XE 20t Prestige and runs through to the V6 S at $104,200. With superb styling, stunning chassis dynamics and a price list that begins at just $60,400 (plus on-roads) the Jaguar XE seems highly likely to steal plenty of sales from the big three German marques, as well as the Japanese Lexus.

Available with the same engine / transmission combinations as the lower cost model, the GT gains 16-inch wheels, black door-mirror housings, a 7-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation, internet radio, automatic lights and wipers, climate control on the air conditioning, keyless entry and start, together with a few other bits and pieces. The topline MX-5 GT with the 2.0-litre engine and automatic transmission is priced at $41,550; again on-road charges have to be added. Starting with a blank computer screen means the designers have been able to WULP D VLJQLÂ˛ FDQW DPRXQW RI weight from that of the 1110 kg gen-three MX-5, bringing the new car down to 1009 kilograms, agonisingly close to the 999 kg we suspect they were aiming for. soft-top again, not a folding hardtop. Driving the all-new Mazda MX-5 is a sheer delight, even more enjoyable than in previous models, hard as that is to believe. The engine has been moved slightly backwards and the little roadster can be classed as mid-engined as its complete powerplant is within the wheelbase. It has also been lowered to bring the centre of gravity just that little bit closer to the ground. Also lower are the seats. Which may prove a disadvantage to some â€“ as mentioned, Mazda Australia is chasing empty nesters as prime buyers. %HLQJ LQ WKDW FODVV , Â˛ QG it less than easy to get down onto the seats as the old bones are reluctant to cooperate. Once settled in, the seats are great, with good support for enthusiastic cornering. Cornering of the type that cries out to be explored and

which is guaranteed to bring a smile to the faces of those who love their cars. The MX-5â€™s ride is impressively comfortable for a car with the sort of balance and superb road grip the MX-5 provides; well done the suspension and tyre engineers. Operation of the soft-top roof is simplicity itself, undo a single catch in the windscreen header rail, fold the roof back and it clips down into the open position. <RX FDQ GR LW LQ OHVV WKDQ Â˛ YH seconds. Lovely! Engine performance from the 1.5 we tested is adequate but no more than that. At times we had to change down a couple of gears on hills that most other cars would have sailed up in top. Fortunately gearchanges on the MX-5 are as precise and easy as always. Thankfully thereâ€™s a 2.0-litre engine option, though none of these are in Australia at this stage. We will report on the bigger engine when it arrives.

JAGUAR makes no bones about the fact it wants to be seen as a marque specialising in sports models, hence the strong emphasis on the dynamics of the all-new Jaguar XE. To call it a four-door sedan version of the F-Type coupe and convertible isnâ€™t far from the mark - its stunning shape has created a huge amount of interest. Jaguarâ€™s distinctive large grille, slim headlights and long bonnet lead back WR D FRXSH OLNH URRÂł LQH WKHQ GRZQ LQWR the sweetest part of the car, the short bootlid with an unobtrusive rear spoiler. Itâ€™s not all about style; the drag FRHIÂ˛ FLHQW RI LV H[FHOOHQW GXH QRW only to the sleek body, but also the DOPRVW FRPSOHWHO\ Âł DW XQGHUÂł RRU Inside, the XE is elegant, with a sporting binnacle directly in front of the driver, a central infotainment screen and subtle ventilation outlets. We particularly like the raised area that runs all they way across the lower area of the windscreen that looks for all the world like an extension of the stereo speakers. Rear headroom is marginal for anyone over about 175 cm, a drawback of the coupe-like shape. Legroom will be limited if youâ€™re sitting behind a tall driver who needs their seat well back. Compromises between those in the front and back seats are necessary. Not unusual in sports sedans, and many Jaguars of the past havenâ€™t exactly been spacious machines. About three quarters of the XEâ€™s body is made from aluminium to provide maximum rigidity, however, the doors are in high-strength steel. Cornering is brilliant, with electric power steering thatâ€™s arguably the best, most intuitive, we have ever felt. Strong words? Possibly, but try for

Citroenâ€™s innovative new C4 Cactus

LETâ€™S get the prickly subject of the name of Citroenâ€™s new C4 Cactus compact SUV out of the way from the start. To choose a name that in Australian slang means â€“ to put it as politely as possible â€“ something that is broken beyond repair would seem to be inviting trouble. But Citroen is a carmaker that loves to be different and, once the initial reaction to the name has passed, this quirky little car is sure to grab plenty of attention for all the right reasons, most noticeably its capacity for personalisation through an amazing number of colour, trim and feature options. The standout feature will undoubtedly be the Airbump panels that are embedded within the doors. Partly cosmetic, partly functional these are hard plastic inserts with protruding VRIW DLU Â˛ OOHG SRFNHWV WKDW DFW DV VKRFN absorbers to protect the sides of the car from day-to-day bumps and scrapes. There are also smaller Airbumps to protect the headlights although the bumper bars themselves remain hard plastic. The Airbumps will be an integral part of the overall customisation of Cactus and as such will come with eight colour options. Different colours will also be available with the roof bars; wing mirrors; wheels and even the Cactus lettering on the rear side panel. Citroen C4 Cactus has been on sale in Europe for more than a year and, with the compact SUV segment booming, Citroen Australia would have loved to

Other features include a fully-digital infotainment interface with a 7.0-inch touch screen; sofa style front seats; roofmounted front passenger airbag; and optional panoramic glass roof. Also expected in both models are satellite navigation; reversing camera; 17inch alloy wheels; digital radio; roof bars and cornering fog lights. The semi-automatic diesel uses what Citroen calls its â€œEasy Pushâ€? gear selector which comprises three large buttons (Drive, Reverse and Neutral â€“ there is no Park option) mounted on the dashboard just above the aircraft-style parking brake.

Although weâ€™ve been able to inspect it, even punch its doors, we werenâ€™t able to drive the Cactus at its recent preview but ZLOO GR VR ZKHQ LWÂŹV ODXQFKHG LQ DERXW Â˛ YH months. Thereâ€™s good interior space with plenty of headroom throughout and acceptable legroom in the rear. Itâ€™s bright and airy, especially with the panoramic sunroof which according to Citroen blocks out 99.9 per cent of UV rays. The rear windows are of the hinge-out variety which may not appeal to everyone. There are plenty of interior storage spaces including an 8.5-litre top-opening glove compartment. Even with a full-sized spare wheel below LWV Âł RRU WKH ERRW LV UDWKHU ORZ ,W KDV D reasonable capacity of 358 litres, 1170 litres with the rear seatbacks folded. Prices will be announced closer to the carâ€™s release but Citroen Australia has JLYHQ EDOO SDUN Â˛ JXUHV RI ÂŠPLG NÂŞ IRU WKH H 7+3 SHWURO DQG ÂŠVXE NÂŞ IRU WKH e-HDi diesel. Like all Citroen cars the C4 Cactus will come with a six-year, unlimited kilometre standard warranty. As a further incentive, buyers who place their order before December 31, 2015 will UHFHLYH IUHH VHUYLFLQJ IRU WKH Â˛ UVW WKUHH years or 45,000 km. Itâ€™s always exciting to see new automotive innovations and Citroen has always been a forward thinker in that regard. Change can be risky at times but weâ€™ll be very surprised if this Cactus ever becomes cactus downunder.
