Latest Toyota Kluger is the safest yet

By ALISTAIR KENNEDY of front-or all-wheel drive but with a single drivetrain, 3.5-litre petrol and eight-speed automatic transmission. All are sevenseaters.

DRIVETRAIN Power comes from Toyota’s longestablished 3.5-litre V6 which was upgraded in 2017 with the added efficiency of direct-injection. This saw an increase in power of almost 8.5 per cent, to 218 kW, while torque rose to 350 Nm. At the same time the automatic transmission was improved from six to eight ratios. The combination of the revised engine and new transmission led

to a reduction in both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by at least 10 per cent when measured on the official cycle.

INFOTAINMENT Kluger GX has a 6.1-inch colour touchscreen with the Toyota Link multimedia system. GLX and Grande get a larger (8.0-inch) screen and advanced Toyota Link as well as satellite navigation and digital radio. Bluetooth pairing is intuitive and there is a sensibly located long narrow slot on the front console ideal for storing smartphones immediately above the USB port.

SAFETY The most recent Kluger update, in January 2018, saw no external or mechanical

changes but with a number of advanced safety features previously only available in the Grande added to the GX and / or GXL models.

Now standard across the range are crash prevention or mitigation features including the Toyota pre-collision safety system that uses the combination of camera and radar to monitor the road ahead not only for other vehicles but also for pedestrians.

Also new to GX and GXL are autonomous emergency braking, lane-departure alert, active cruise control and automatic high beam. These add $950 to the price of the GX taking it to $44,500 with front-wheel and $48,500 with all-wheel-drive.

TOYOTA has established itself as onestop shop for 4WDs and SUVs, with seven models ranging from the urban C-HR through to the go-anywhere / do-anything LandCruiser 70 and 200 series. In between there’s the RAV4, Fortuner, Prado and this week’s review vehicle the semi-luxury Kluger.

Kluger is aimed at the SUV buyer who wants to transport the family in comfort rather than tackling any serious off-road terrain. Having said that it does come with the option of all-wheel drive although that’s more likely to be used for recreational towing than bush bashing.

Mini Kensington edition

HOT MINI: Classy looking Minis carry the very English name of Kensington.

A LIMITED edition Mini Kensington Edition is now on the Australian market. Just 60 are on offer in this country. Available on Mini Cooper and Cooper S three- and five-door hatches all are finished in a Pure Burgundy metallic hue. There are K’ badges on the side pillars. Both Kensington models have black roof and mirror caps and a black JCW roof spoiler Cooper has 16-inch black alloy wheels in ‘Victory spoke’ pattern, while 17-inch black alloy wheels in ‘Cosmos spoke’ are on the Cooper S. Latest Toyota Kluger From page 1 GXL adds rain-sensing windscreen wipers, blind-spot monitor and rear crosstraffic alert increasing the price over the previous GXL by $1400 to $54,950 (FWD) and $58,950 (AWD).

DRIVING As is invariably the case Toyota Kluger has grown over the years and at just under five metres long and two metres wide isn’t that far behind LandCruiser 200. There’s a decent climb up to get in which can be a problem for older occupants although there is a running board to lend a hand, or should that be foot?

The front seats are large and comfortable, there is excellent legroom and headroom in the three second row seats. These slide forward to help access to the third row seats although it will never be too easy for adult passengers – two children in these rearmost seats makes most sense.

Boot space is very good for a sevenseater. All rear seats can be folded flat with 60/40 splits in both the second and third rows.

Kluger’s bulk can cause problems in tight car parks where the Grande’s range of four cameras, including top-down panoramic view, as well as rear cross traffic alert really come into their own.

Excellent not only for on road use and parking, but also useful should Kluger be taken off-road.

Although the engine’s torque peak of 350 Nm comes in at an extremely high 4700 rpm there’s more than enough grunt from much lower revs.

Once out on the motorway it’s easy to forget Kluger’s size and imagine yourself cruising in a luxury saloon but with the added benefit of a high driving position and plenty of interior space. It’s very quiet with minimal intrusion even on coarse road surfaces.

Ride comfort in the Kluger is good with safe and predictable handling partly through a considerable level of Australian testing from the early design stages. You certainly wouldn’t describe it as sporting but nor do we expect it to be.

Dynamic Torque Control (DTC) which helps the driver to get maximum traction and cornering stability. The system uses information on vehicle speed, yaw rate and steering and throttle angles to control torque distribution automatically between the front and rear axles. It drives only the front wheels when the vehicle is cruising and switches to AWD only when required.

Fuel consumption from the Grande AWD that we tested is listed at 9.5 litres per 100 kilometres. We averaged just under 11.6 L/100 km over our normal blend of urban, motorway and rural driving.

SUMMING UP Toyota Kluger is a large comfortable SUV that will generally be used predominantly as an urban people carrier. Having the option to take the all-wheel-drive versions into mild off-road conditions will attract adventurous family buyers as will its 2000 kg towing capacity.

Jag on the pace with compact SUV

IN DEMAND: The E-Pace is unmistakably a Jaguar, with a bold, upright grille.

JAGUAR continues apace (pun intended) to cover all automotive bases with the recent addition of the E-Pace compact SUV to its vehicle roster. It seems the move downscale has paid off for, by all accounts, they are selling their socks off.

In fact, E-Pace is well on its way to becoming the company’s best seller Down Under. So, what’s on offer? It comes in 38 variants thanks to what Jaguar calls its ‘Ultimate Customer Choice’, which allows you to build any kind of E-Pace you fancy.

Specification runs through four levels – S, SE, HSE and R-Dynamic – with a choice of five different engines, three diesels and two petrol – D150, D180, D240, P250 and P300. All are all-wheel drive.

Prices start at $47,750, plus on-road costs, and top out at $84,370. On test was an E-Pace D240 SE, which comes to market at a manufacturer’s price of $68,850.

STYLING The E-Pace is unmistakably a Jaguar, with cues taken from big brother F-Pace. For example, the bold upright grille sets the scene for mesh featuring 3-D chamfering on its wide, flat hexagons catching the light, with Jaguar’s biggest ever Growler badge in the centre, incorporating the adaptive cruise control sensors.

The Jaguar signature extends to side fender vents in polished chrome, while at the rear round tailpipe tips are integrated into the valance, a nod to jet engines, and a three-piece upper tailgate spoiler is shaped for optimum airflow.

Storage around the cabin includes a centre console compartment that can take four large water bottles, while a secure glovebox is lockable. Front and rear door bins are some of the biggest in class.

The sports car-style interior plugs the driver into a sporty driving experience.

Premium leather on key touch-points such as the steering wheel, centre console grab handle and gear shifter, while secondary controls have been made simpler and easier to operate.

INFOTAINMENT This is a mixed bag, with the E-Pace, according to Jaguar, being one of the most connected in class, the nextgeneration touchscreen infotainment system linking occupants to apps such as Spotify through the company’s InControl selection.

However, for a company that claims leading-edge connectivity, Apple CarPlay is conspicuous by its absence.

The 10-inch central dashboard touchscreen reduces the number of switches and rotary dials make the climate control functions accessible. A Thin Film Transistor full colour head-up display enables the driver to read info without taking eyes off the road.

ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS A high-performance diesel engine, with sequential turbochargers, pumps out 177 kW of power at 4000 rpm and 500 Nm of torque at a low 1500 revs, combining lowspeed response and high-speed output.

Mated with a slick nine-speed automatic transmission and state-of-the-art allwheel-drive, according to the maker, pushes the E-Pace from zero to 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds. Carbon dioxide emissions are 162 g/km.

SAFETY There’s a stack of driver assistance and safety features. For example, blind spot assist is a combination of blind spot monitor and lane keeping assist, keeping the E-pace out of the path of surrounding vehicles when the driver isn’t paying attention.

Forward traffic monitor, incorporated in the 360-degree surround camera, keeps an eye on traffic approaching from either side at a junction, warning of potential danger, while park assist automatically positions the E-Pace in parallel or bay parking places.

DRIVING Under urging the engine has a harsh note, which fortunately is mostly kept out of the well-insulated cabin. Seating for five is adequate and comfortable but not for too long a trip.

A power tailgate offers the advantage of easy access to 484 litres of cargo space and then there’s Jag’s ‘magic wand’ the Activity Key, which means if you go swimming at the beach, the biggest thing to worry about is being eaten by a shark and not your E-Pace keys being stolen from your towel.

The Activity Key comprises a transponder embedded in a rubber wrist strap (no moving parts, no batteries). To lock or unlock the E-Pace you hold the band up to the upper lip of the rear number plate.

When the Activity Key is in use, the main vehicle key fobs are disabled, rendering them useless and the vehicle immobile in the event of a break-in.

The engine stop / start system left a lot to be desired: at rest with the power pedal pushed hard, the engine stuttered to start and lagged in leaping into action. Not what you’d expect from a vehicle of Jag’s pedigree.

The nine-speed auto transmission is nicely matched to vehicle operating speeds and loads. Controls are minus steering wheel-mounted shift paddles, so manual mode was not as accessible as if there were. The centre console-only gearshift was a poor substitute.

The Active Driveline AWD system, unlike on many rivals, is not braking based but in extreme situations can transfer almost all the engine torque to the rear axle. Under standard conditions, the nominal torque split delivers rear wheel-drive character.

At the rear axle, two independent electronically-controlled wet-plate clutches distribute torque between the rear wheels, with the capability to direct 100 per cent of that torque to either rear wheel.

Performance can be moulded to the driver’s desires via JaguarDrive Control giving a choice of four driving modes, selected using buttons on the centre console: normal offers performance, control and comfort; dynamic with settings for a range of vehicle systems; eco for fuel economy; and rain, ice and snow enhancing stability in low grip conditions.

Combined urban / highway fuel consumption claimed by the maker is 6.2 litres per 100 km. Shuffling around town our test vehicle sat astride 10 litres per 100 kilometres; on the open road it chalked up down to half that.

SUMMING UP Jaguar says the shadow of a cub prowling in the front door puddle lights is an attempt to make anyone approaching smile. The performance, kit and prestige offered for the price of an E-Pace is enough to prolong the pleasure. Individualism, through a raft of options, comes at a cost.

Nissan Juke NISSAN Australia has updated its way-out small SUV Juke ST and highspec Juke Ti-S, and introduced some three Ti-S myJuke Personalisation Pack variants.
