COROLLA HYBRID: It maintains the look of the petrol-only models, with the added advantage of fuel economy.

Corolla turns on hybrid efficiency By EWAN KENNEDY some not offered on other Corollas in Australia, the hybrid is priced from $26,990, putting it between the petrolonly SX and ZR hatches. A chiselled front end sees the radiator grille in two sections, the upper section dominated by the familiar Toyota logo and flanked by auto-levelling bi-LED headlamps and LED daytime running lamps, the lower portion incorporating fog lamps. A steeply raked windscreen ensures the car slices through the air cleanly, which is then directed over a roof that slopes to a small spoiler.

Rear light wraps around the corners giving the Corolla a broad stance from behind. The car rolls on 16-inch alloy wheels with five sets of V-twin spokes. The car comes in any of the eight exterior paint colours available across the Corolla range. The passenger cabin exhibits the premium materials and quality of a more expensive vehicle, with dark upholstery and soft-touch surfaces all round. Head room is adequate, shoulder space likewise but rear seat legroom is tight even with average-size occupants up front. With the hybrid battery positioned under the rear seat and temporary spare wheel

under the floor, the latest Corolla retains the standard hatch’s 360 litres of luggage space. The rear seat backs fold flat for even more room. A small 4.2-inch colour touchscreen is positioned just below air-con vents in the central dashboard area not quite at the driver’s eye level. The screen displays clear full-colour maps for the standard navigation and is used to operate the audio and Toyota Link connected mobility functions. Air-conditioning controls are separate from the screen, positioned at the base of the centre stack.

WHILE other automobile manufacturers take varying roads to low emissions, Toyota is steadfastly sticking to the petrol / electric hybrid route with its new addition to the genre, the Corolla Hybrid. With official fuel consumption put at 4.1 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined urban / highway cycle, this is good enough to give the vehicle a range of almost 1100 km depending on driving style. The fifth hybrid in Toyota’s Australian line-up, joining Camry, Prius, Prius c and Prius v, the hybrid version of the popular Corolla arrives just months shy of the 50th anniversary of the launch of the first Corolla in Japan in October 1966. With a comprehensive list of equipment,

Special Ford Ranger XLS By EWAN KENNEDY PICKUP trucks are all the rage in Australia at the moment and Ford says it’s very keen to be the market leader in this important segment. Toyota HiLux has been a winner here just about forever, but Ford says Ranger can oust HiLux and take top spot on the podium. Ford is certainly coming closer by the month. A big ambition? Yes, but a smart one as the Ford Falcon will disappear from the Australian market in October this year and something has to fill its place and bring dollars into the company’s coffers. The biggest strength of Ford Ranger is that, unlike everything else in this class, it was designed and engineered in Australia and a great deal of testing was done in this country. The same thing applies to the wagon version of the Ranger, the Everest SUV. (Okay, so the current model Mazda BT50 is a Ranger with a different name, so technically it was designed in Australia as well. The next BT-50 will be an overseas design and won’t share anything with the Ranger.) Appearance is pretty important in this market area and the Ranger 4x4 XLS Special Edition has a sports bar, side steps, bed and tailgate liners. This is a big pickup and the safety of a rear view camera and rear parking sensors is appreciated. The Ranger 4x4 XLS Special Edition has a 3.5-tonne towing capacity when the correct towing kit is installed, making it equal leader in its field. More and more baby boomers are retiring

BIG FORD RANGER XLS SPECIAL EDITION: It features a sports bar and side steps. and hitting the road on a traditional lap of Australia with big caravans behind them - the Ford Ranger can be added to their short lists of tow vehicles. Ford Ranger 4x4 XLS Special Edition is a double-cab pickup and goes on sale in September as the next shot in the battle of the sales race. It has $4900 worth of Ford Genuine Factory-Fitted accessories, but only $2500 is added to the price of the XLS on which it is based. Ford has a recommended driveaway price on the Ranger XLS Special Edition of

$49,990 with a six-speed manual gearbox, and $52,190 with a six-speed automatic transmission. In the convoluted world of anti-pricefixing legislation in Australia Ford has asked us to point out that, “The selling price of any vehicle is at the discretion of the selling dealer.” Over to you, potential buyers… Like the other XLT models the Special Edition is powered by the larger of the turbo-diesel engines in the Ranger range, a 3.2-litre unit producing 147 kW of power and 470 Nm of torque at 1500 rpm.

Ford Australia has been a major player in the automotive scene in Australia since 1925. It currently employs over 1100 designers and engineers and will continue to play a major role in Ford’s global design field after the local factory shuts down. Believe it or not, that’s on Bathurst weekend - who dreamt up that weird timing? Ford tells us it will be the largest automotive employer in Australia after Holden and Toyota cease Australian manufacturing in 2017.

Corolla turns on hybrid efficiency From page 1 The Corolla’s Hybrid Synergy Drive system uses an Atkinson-cycle 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and 60 kW electric motor. Efficiency features for the petrol engine include cooled exhaust-gas recirculation, an electric water pump and a compression ratio of 13.0:1, compared with 10.0:1 on the petrol-only Corolla. The nickel-metal hydride battery, which puts out maximum power of 60 kW and top torque of 207 Nm, is charged by the petrol engine and regenerative braking. Passive safety is taken care of by seven airbags, active safety includes stability, traction control and ABS anti-skid brakes with brake assist and brake-force distribution. Reversing is made easy with a camera incorporating guidelines. The first pleasant surprise about the Corolla Hybrid test vehicle was the keyless entry and petrol engine start. Hybrid power is all about efficiency in performance, economy and environmental protection. During our period with the test car it clocked up fuel consumption of 4.6 litres per 100 kilometres on a mix of suburban and motorway driving, compared to the official figure of 4.1 litres per 100 kilometres under similar conditions. That official fuel consumption of 4.1 litres compares with 6.1 litres per 100 kilometres for automatic Corolla pure petrol hatches.

TOYOTA COROLLA: The Hybrid can only add to its success. Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive technology is capable of operating in petrol and electric modes alone, or a combination of both, depending on driving conditions. These are called into operation by buttons on the centre console. Setting off under electric power alone is ponderous and needs the input of the petrol engine to push it along.

An Econometer in the instrument panel directly in front of the driver shows how the systems are working, with charge, economy and power on the dial helping the driver to maintain a desired result. The independent rear suspension delivers stable ride and handling with a quietness and smooth operation that makes motoring enjoyable. Continuously variable transmission is

With 40,800 sales the Corolla retained its title as Australia’s best-selling car in the financial year ended June 30, making it the top seller in each of the past three calendar years. The Hybrid can only add to the success.

Two in three used cars pass on safety VICTORIA’S leading transport advocates say it’s disappointing that almost one-third of vehicles tested in the 2016 Used Car Safety Ratings (UCSR), scored a Poor or Very Poor rating for occupant crash safety protection. The ratings are based on work by the Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC) in conjunction with the RACV, TAC and VicRoads. Of the 266 vehicles rated, 96 models were in the Poor or Very Poor category - a result which RACV manager of vehicle engineering, Michael Case, said was disappointing. Mr Case said overall the smaller vehicle fared the worst when it came to safety, with a whopping 58 per cent of vehicles in the Light Car category receiving a Very Poor rating. “The smaller vehicle categories are a massive concern, he said. “We would advise buyers to do their homework when purchasing a pre-owned small vehicle. Around 10 per cent of the vehicles rated earned the coveted Safe Pick rating. A Safe Pick car must achieve a 5 star rating and have Stability Control fitted.

In addition to protecting occupants, Safe Pick rated vehicles provide good protection for other road users including occupants of other vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists, in the event of a crash. Historically commercial vehicles have received a bad UCSR report card, however, seven out of the 11 vans rated in the 2016 study scored excellent ratings with four gaining the Safe Pick tag. “This is a major leap in safety for this market group which in the past has performed very badly, Mr Case said. “This tells us commercial vehicle manufacturers have taken on board the poor results of past years and are now making concerted efforts to improve safety features in these vehicles and frankly it’s about time. Mr Case said the 2016 UCSR results again confirmed that safety doesn’t have to be compromised by price, with many of the top rating used vehicles priced at less than $10,000. “You don’t have to spend a fortune to buy a safe car. For example a Safe Pick FG Falcon (2008-2014) can be bought for under $8000, he said.

Mr Case said it was pleasing to note there were six Safe Pick vehicles in the Large SUV category as these vehicles have been labelled a risk to other road users in the past. MUARC senior research fellow, Dr Stuart Newstead said the 2016 UCSR guide is an excellent resource for those looking to purchase a safe, secondhand vehicle because they measure the performance of these cars in real crashes. “A driver of the worst vehicle rated is more than six times as likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash, compared with having the same type of crash while driving in the best vehicle, he said. The ratings are based on reports from more than seven million actual crashes from 1987-2014 reported to police in Australia and New Zealand. They cover more than 90 per cent of popular passenger and light commercial vehicles in the Australian market, manufactured between 1982 and 2014.
