MAZDA CX-3: It is sleek and stylish.
Mazda’s popular new CX-3 SMALL SUVs are all the rage at present and Mazda’s stylish new CX-3 is sitting high on the popularity list. Interestingly, both 2WD (front drive) and 4WD CX-3s are coming to us downunder. Mazda Australia feels some owners will want the added traction of all-wheel-drive for use in slippery conditions, such as in snowfields. Perhaps even in gentle off-road running when exploring forestry trails and the like. Two familiar Mazda model names, Neo and Maxx, are used for the CX-3, but are joined by two new ones; the upper-middle CX-3 sTouring and Akari. Prices start at an impressively low $19,990 (plus on-roads) for the CX-3 Neo
By EWAN KENNEDY 2WD petrol manual and go up to $37,690 for the topline Akari with AWD diesel with auto. The Mazda Kodo design theme has been around for some time and has worked extremely well globally from a sales point of view. So it comes as no surprise that the CX-3 follows its bigger and smaller brothers in its shape. The grille works very well, the body height is just right and has a neat profile, the rear has a semi-sleek look that, like many in this class, takes away some usability for long tall loads.
Becoming increasingly familiar to us is the new Mazda compact instrument layout. It has a large central dial with smaller rectangular displays on either side of it. It’s neat and stylish but it can be difficult to see the smaller displays at times. A somewhat basic head-up display is fitted to the upper CX-3 models. While it works reasonably well, it’s not as good as the systems being used by most other makers. However, the Mazda readout doesn’t disappear as soon as you put on polarising sunglasses - big plus from me. Our sTouring used a 7.0-inch colour screen to show satellite navigation, voice
activation, read-out text messages, Bluetooth, and internet connectivity. The navigation system uses data from SD cards and can display the current location on a map, or display routes to take to a destination. Via a smartphone you can use internet for content. The connectivity system also enables the use of Mazda apps. The Fuel Economy Monitor (FCM) shows if you’re driving in an eco-friendly manner. Maintenance allows drivers to check when their next oil change is due. Power comes from either a petrol or diesel engine.

Jeep Grand Cherokee a versatile, large SUV
By ALISTAIR KENNEDY
THE Grand Cherokee is the biggest and best-selling vehicle in the Jeep range, accounting for around half of total sales since the release of the current model back in 2013. Grand Cherokee now comes, for the first time, with a two-wheel drive (2WD) option. It’s only available in a single variant – the entry-level petrol Laredo. The latter also comes with 4WD as do all of the higher-specced variants – Limited, Overland, Summit and SRT8. Styling is less angular than other Jeeps and the big SUV has a neat and conservative look, characteristics that undoubtedly have attracted the new breed of Jeep buyers to it. The higher-specced variants add progressively more chrome and get larger wheels (20-inch for those above Laredo which gets 18-inchers). The new Platinum Summit variant, added to the range earlier this year, gets even more chrome while the SRT8 stands out with its black front grille and rear tail light surrounds. High-intensity discharge (HID) bi-xenon headlamps and LED daytime running lights (DRL) are standard across the Grand Cherokee range. Surprisingly for a vehicle of its size Grand Cherokee can only seat five occupants – many of its competitors can carry at least two more. There’s a real quality look and feel throughout the interior with plenty of room for five full-size adults to spread out travel comfortably over long distances. There’s plenty of storage space for that type of journey, 782 litres with the rear seatbacks in place and 1554 litres with them folded. The Laredo has climate-controlled air; a customisable electronic instrument array;
JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE: It has a neat and conservative look. leather trimmed steering wheel; cloth seats, with the fronts being power adjustable and heated; and auto-dimming interior mirror. Grand Cherokee Limited adds leather trim; memory functions for the front seats; heating to all seats as well as the steering wheel; and a powered tailgate. Overland gets Nappa leather on the seats; wood and leather trim on the steering wheel; a body coloured lower facia with chromed inserts; and a dual panoramic sunroof. Three engines are offered. Laredo, Limited and Overland all get the choice between a 3.6-litre Chrysler Pentastar V6 petrol and an Italian-made 3.0-litre V6 common-rail turbo-diesel. Summit is diesel-only while the highperformance SRT 8 is powered by a 6.4-litre V8 petrol. The V6 petrol generates 210 kW and 347 Nm (at 4300 rpm); the diesel 177 kW
and 550 Nm (at 2000 rpm); with the V8 topping the range with 344 kW and 624 Nm (at 4100 rpm). An eight-speed ZF automatic transmission is used on all Grand Cherokee models, with a medium-duty unit in the Laredo 2WD and heavier duty ones in the 4WDs. Paddle shifters are fitted to all models. All Grand Cherokee 4WD models use the Jeep Selec-Terrain system that provides the choice of five different driving programs (Auto; Sand; Snow; Mud; and Rock ) for specific conditions. The Quadra-Lift air suspension system operates automatically to adjust to required ride height conditions. It can also be adjusted manually by the driver and provides five height settings for optimum ride performance. Standard in all Grand Cherokee models are seven airbags including protection
for the driver’s knees; ABS brakes with brake assist; electronic stability program with electronic rollover mitigation (ERM); traction control; active high-beam control; daytime running lights; dusk sensing headlights; reversing camera; hill-holder; and tyre pressure monitoring. Overland, Summit and SRT models also get advanced safety features including adaptive cruise control; forward collision warning with crash mitigation; reversing camera; blind spot monitoring; cross traffic monitoring; automatic cruise control; automatic emergency braking; and hill ascent/descent control. Grand Cherokee uses the Uconnect for its connectivity features. The 2WD Laredo operates through a 5.0-inch touchscreen, all others through an 8.4-inch touchscreen. Although Jeep is now under Italian ownership, Grand Cherokee still shows its American heritage with a relatively soft ride. Our test vehicle was in the diesel Limited. We were able to give it some semi-serious off-road work during the recent East Coast Low weather event where it proved its versatility over slippery and hilly terrain. During our week-long test we averaged 9.2 litres per 100 kilometres compared to the listed 7.5 L/100 km. Another plus for long-distance touring is that, with the exception of the SRT, all Grand Cherokee 4WD variants have a towing capacity of 3500 kg. Jeep Grand Cherokee with its excellent on-road comfort and capable performance is aimed primarily at recent converts to the Jeep brand, and judging by its sales success there are plenty of them. Nevertheless it will also appeal to the rusted-on Jeep lovers who can confidently take it into what they see as its natural offroad habitat.
Mazda’s popular new CX-3 From page 1
The petrol is relatively conventional in displacing 2.0 litres, the turbo-diesel is interesting in that its capacity is just 1.5 litres. Power outputs are 109 kW and 77 kW respectively. The diesel has an impressive 270 Nm between 1600 and 2500 revs. Petrol grunt peaks at 192 Nm at 2800 revs. Six-speed manual or automatic transmissions are offered, but the manual only comes with the front-wheel-drive petrol-engine combination. Our road test Mazda CX-3 was the diesel sTouring AWD with automatic transmission. Mazda CX-3 has a five-star safety rating from ANCAP. It has ABS brakes, emergency brake assist, smart city brake support, emergency stop signal, traction control, dynamic stability control, lane departure warning, rear cross traffic alert, advanced blind spot monitoring, rear parking sensors, reversing camera; either as standard or options. Interestingly, most buyers in this class aren’t actually looking for an SUV, but
MAZDA CX-3: The latest model has proved popular around the world. rather want a tall hatch, that’s almost a station wagon. That body shape not only gives more headroom and luggage space than a hatchback of the size, but also provides easier entry and exit to the seats. Mazda’s CX-3 is just right in size, providing easier entry and exit to the seats. Adults can be carried in the back seats, but children make more sense. Luggage space is good for a car of this size and the two-level-floor option is clever.
The boot is easy to load and has a decent shape. Mazda CX-3 is particularly quiet and smooth on good surfaces, especially on motorways. On typical Aussie backroads it provides comfort that’s not always common in small SUVs. The little turbo-diesel is not keen on getting off the line in a hurry, nor in accelerating suddenly to overtake, or simply to get out of a side street into the traffic.
Once the diesel is operating ‘on song’ it’s much better and the strong torque and quick action automatic make for easy hillclimbing and safe overtaking. Try for yourself during your prepurchase road test, and see how well you can adapt your driving to suit the car’s characteristics. Fuel consumption is impressively low. On motorways we had no trouble getting it under five litres per hundred kilometres. Around town it typically sat in the five to seven litres per hundred range. Hammer it and diesel use will climb significantly, but who drives like that in this type of vehicle? Sales of SUVs are increasing at a huge rate, not just in Australia but worldwide. Mazda’s new CX-3 is an excellent example of this new breed and is already becoming a common sight on Australian roads. Surprisingly only about five per cent of buyers have opted for the turbodiesel in sales to date. Having just tested it we feel the oil burner is worth adding to your short list.
