Trial run for mountain ‘Fat Bikes’ at Mt Stirling MOUNTAIN biking, or should we say ‘fat biking’, will hit the slopes of Mt Stirling this winter as a trial only. Victoria’s leading natural alpine resort is excited to announce the arrival of Fat Bikes during the 2015 snow season. Mt Stirling is conducting a trial introduction to Fat Bikes on weekends during June and September and it’s an exciting opportunity for mountain bike enthusiasts to get out on the trails this winter. The areas available for the use of Fat Bikes will be restricted to the Circuit Road from Telephone Box Junction (TBJ) to King Saddle and the Circuit Road from TBJ

THE past summer season at Mt Buller proved very successful, including the launch of the Australian Epic Mountain Bike trail. A full events calendar and fantastic activities to suit all ages and interests provided visitors with a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of the city; swap bitumen for dirt, enjoy a cooler climate, along with stunning views, varied terrain and a range of trails suited to all levels. The official opening of the 2014-15 mountain bike season was on December 6, with a weekend-long festival, highlight of the weekend being the launch of the Australian Alpine Epic trail, the first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. This new trail offers a 40km long-distance, cross-country descending ride that takes in some of the most spectacular terrain and scenery in the Australian Alps. The only IMBA Epic outside of North America, the trail follows Mt Buller’s accreditation as Australia’s only IMBA-endorsed Ride Centre in 2012. The weekend was preceded by the inaugural
in visitation and trail usage, with trail numbers increased significantly. Following the launch of the Epic trail, the resort also saw an increase in the number of bike friendly lodges being open, and an increase in hikers and trail runners from across all areas of Australia. IT’S OFFICIAL: Cindy McLeish (MLA, Eildon) and Mt Buller Mt Stirling chief executive officer John Huber get set to cut the ribbon to officially mark the opening of the Australian Epic Mountain Bike trail in December. Australian MTB Summit, an industry conference held by Mt Buller Resort Management that was attended by more than 100 mountain bike industry representatives. A range of specialist mountain bike camps and clinics were also held throughout summer, with the teams from Gravity OZ and MTBSkills back in the resort for another season. Clinics included dedicated women’s weekends, MTB retreats and more throughout the summer.
The biggest event on Mt Buller’s busy calendar, the Bike Buller MTB Festival presented by Orbea was held on March 7-9. Riders enjoyed a jampacked three days of mountain biking on Mt Buller’s world-class cross-country, endurance and downhill trails, as well as festival fun at the popular Picnic in the Park Food, Wine and Music Festival held at Mirimbah Park. By ANDREW PATTISON OLYMPIC Winter Institute of Australia (OWIA) athletes Britt Cox, Anton Grimus, Laura Peel and Danielle Scott were all on hand to celebrate the ofďŹ cial opening of the 2015 ski season at Mt Buller over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.
The four 2014 Olympians were on stage to assist Mt Buller Resort Management board chief executive ofďŹ cer John Huber in opening the season, as well as being interviewed and signing posters for the young fans in attendance. Ski cross athlete and Mt Buller local, Anton Grimus, was optimis-
tic for a snowy 2015 winter. “It’s great to have four lifts turning so early in the season,� he said. “I can’t wait to get out there and carve up some turns on Little Buller Spur. “The early snowfalls and s n ow m a k i n g c o n d i t i o n s should set all resorts up for
a strong season.� The OWIA athletes will be training both in Australia and overseas over the next few months before competing in a number of Ski and Snowboard Australia (SSA) National Championship events at various Australian resorts in August and September.

Coming from the Top End to the snow

THERE is one very excited group of children about to hit the slopes of Mt Buller - and they are coming all the way from Manyallaluk - Northern Territory. Manyallaluk is a small Aboriginal community located roughly 500km south east of Darwin in the Northern Territory. Stephanie Baker is the teacher of grades 3/4/5/6 - and has connections with the Mansfield district. Stephanie’s mother and father live in Mansfield and it was Stephanie’s idea to bring her class to visit the snow. There are a total of 22 students in the school of which Stephanie teaches 10. To enable the children to make such a long trip Stephanie said they have to raise the money to help the class fly to Melbourne to see the snow for the first time. “Life as an Aboriginal child growing up in a remote community can be very isolating,” Stephanie said. “The community has no mobile phone or television reception and all the water is pumped from the natural spring. “This kind of isolation means that my students have very little understanding and real life experiences outside the community. “The idea (for the trip) started because we were learning about igloos, and the kids had never heard of one, so we learnt about ice and snow,” she explained. “Then we thought it would be a good idea to let them try and see snow.” Living in a community where ac-
cess to a main road is via a 35-kilometre stretch of gravel and red dirt, many of the students will experience air travel and the hustle and bustle of city life for the first time. “I know that our trip to Mansfield and Melbourne will be a story they will retell for the rest of their lives, and it may also help them to one day venture beyond their remote home so that they might learn skills to enhance the well-being of those who live in Manyallaluk and similar communities. Manyallaluk students are planning a 10 day trip from the July 22 to August 1. They will stay in Mansfield at the Bakers’ home and travel to Melbourne to see an AFL football match, visit the Zoo and the Museum as well as spending time in the snow at Mt Buller. “All of these experiences will be a first for my students, but the thing they are most excited about is going on a train,” Stephanie said. Stephanie has called for help in making even the smallest of difference to the lives of these beautiful, funny, intelligent kids. “It would be to show them that there is a world outside their community and that they are a valued member of Australian society,” Stephanie said. “In 10 days you could help me plant the seed of possibility that they have the potential to travel, study and one day maybe even learn to ski. “These students deserve the opportunity to experience the wonders of their own country,” Stephanie said. When he finished the building job he stayed around doing various jobs including ski hire in the winter. But that was not all he did – he also made coffee and washed dishes – sometimes all for a meal. George did a lot of building over the next few years, but it was George’s personal skills, building skills, lady skills – that saw him successfully build his business for some years. He purchased George’s Ski Hire in 1968 and it has been
known as that ever since. He also purchased George’s at Merrijig – now the Motor Inn and Ski Hire. George celebrated his 77th birthday in May and as at the opening of this year’s ski season he is celebrating his 54th year on the mountain. In response to the presentation George said he was very lucky to come here – his start here was good – he was promised that if he worked hard he could one day buy the ski hire and he did.
He helped build the ABOM and at night, after finishing the building work, he did the dishes and when he finished the dishes he made the cappuccinos. He brought out his family from Europe but unfortunately only one sister stayed, he said. He said he met his wife here – they have now been married for 48 years – he has had a lovely time – and has raised his children here. He considers himself a very lucky man – congratulations George.

GEORGE Aivatoglou’s name is so well known around Mt Buller you would think he had lived there all of his life. But not so – just more than two thirds of his long and very fulfilling life. George came to Australia more than 53 years ago as a non-English speaking migrant, chasing a dream. Presenting him with a certificate for his commitment to the mountain, Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management chief executive officer John Huber described George as a legend of the mountain. “Most certainly most of you would know George’s Ski Hire – and the identity behind it,” John said. John said that in compiling the information on George he ‘could have written a book on him’. George arrived in Australia in 1952 with nothing more than a small case and the clothes he wore - his first four nights he spent in a toilet because he didn’t know any place to go and didn’t speak any English. A chap he made friends with on the ship out to Australia found him and offered him accommodation in exchange for some work – this was at Mt Buller. His first trip to Mt Buller was a long way and on the back of a builder’s truck – starting in November 1952.

MT BULLER Mt Stirling Resort Management was thrilled to announce last week that the design agency responsible for creating the interpretative trails on Mt Stirling has been the recipient of a prestigious design award. Melbourne based design agency Heine Jones, which was appointed by resort management in 2013 to develop the interpretative trail panels and associated wayďŹ nding signage, has won the award at the Society of Experiential Graphic Design (SEGD) Global Design Awards in Chicago. Established in 1987, the SEGD Global Design Awards were formed to recognise excellence in experiential and environmental graphic design. They are the only international design awards focused on communication in the built environment. Winning projects have included complex wayfinding systems, branding and identity work, retail and interior projects, exhibition and experience design, architectural signage programs, public art installations, and design research and publications. Resort management appointed a Melbourne consultant, Heine Jones to undertake the project to develop simple, cost effective interpretative signage for Mt Stirling’s most popular bush walking trails. Heine Jones’ goals were to help guide visitors along the trails, enhance their experience with the cultural and natural history of the region, and educate them about the fragility of the environment and how they can contribute to its care. The suite of interpretative elements highlight local history and resources, and present the information on trail markers that provide visual clarity while blending into the natural environment. They also provide simple trail wayfinding as well as walking distances between points of interest and informa-

Mr Huber announced that overall there were now 90 lodges that had been on the mountain for more than 50 years. Visitor numbers look promising year – mainly due to the fact that early snow fell, along with temperatures allowing snow to be ‘man made’. In the second week Mt Buller had an additional 4818 visitors while Mt Stirling had 54. The total number of visitors to Mt Buller as at June 14 was 12,873 compared to the average over the past years of 9164 at the same time. Resorts across the whole of the alpine region saw 29,856 visitors reach the peaks with Mt Buller still leading the way in terms of numbers.

With freezing cold temperatures at night over the past week it is not surprising that the snow guns have been very happy at work making lots of white stuff for visitors to play in this weekend. And the good news is that gate entry has been halved ($22.50 at the resort entry point and $21 online) until the good snow falls come. Further to this adults can ski and snowboard for just $70 and kids can hit the slopes for $40. These offers will be assessed on a daily basis.

ALTHOUGH it is considered a slow start to the snow season visitor numbers do not reflect the lack of snow. Compared to 2014, visitor numbers in the first two weeks of the season actually tripled bringing a spark of hope for a good season. In the first week there were more than 8000 visitors to Buller but only 30 to Mt Stirling – not surprising as Mt Stirling has no snow at this time. Mt Buller numbers, however, were up by more than 300 per cent compared to last

Mt Buller celebrated Opening Weekend with a bang AS SUN SET: Mt Buller village square took on a quieter aspect as the sun went down and visitors waited expectantly for the start of the fireworks.

MT BULLER has officially welcomed the 2015 snow season, with thousands of visitors enjoying fun, free activities and live entertainment across the mountain, along with discounted lift passes for the avid skiers and snowboarders. Visitors to the resort enjoyed their first turns on Bourke Street with the opening of Blue Bullet Express and Bourke Street Carpet on Friday ahead of schedule, and ABOM Express and Wombat opening on Saturday. Over in the Village Square, festivities kicked off on Saturday afternoon with free face painting, complimentary glühwein, hot chocolate, the annual Barry Possum Show and a live performance by acclaimed Melbourne rock band, Calling All Cars. Visitors also welcomed a unique memorable meet and greet with the team from Australian Sled Dog tours. On Saturday afternoon the official opening of the only Asian influenced food court in any Australian ski resort, Popo Kitchen was celebrated with full Chinese traditions. Celebrations continued well into the evening with a sparkling fireworks display and various opening weekend parties. Mt Buller Resort Management marketing and communications manager, Gillian Dobson, said the weekend is a great celebration made even better with the first taste of snow. “Opening weekend is a great time to come together and celebrate the first official day of the season,” Ms Dobson said.
SHORT AND SWEET: Vice chair of the Mt Buller Mt Stirling resort management board, Dean Belle, welcomed all to Mt Buller and had the pleasure of officially declaring the 2015 snow season open for business.
“It is fantastic to see snow on the ground and the snowmakers have done an incredible job creating a base which will set us up nicely for the next dump of snow. “We’re now looking toward what is set to be another fun-filled season here on Mt Buller, with a great range of events, activities and fantastic deals ahead from now until spring. “We look forward to welcoming everyone here on top of the world.” The weekend wrapped up with an ecumenical Blessing of the Snow service at the Mt Buller Alpine Chapel on Sunday morning, along with the annual Moosehead party, featuring free entry, DJs, prizes and more. “An easy three-hour drive from Melbourne, Mt Buller is the ideal winter escape,” Ms Dobson said.

More hoses at bowsers, under cover canopy stations extended and fast foods to go will take snow seekers less time this winter when they drop in for that 'last petrol stop' before leaving Mansfield. Extensive renovations to the fuel stop area has seen some 24 hoses available for that 'fast fill' including additional diesel pumps along with premium unleaded, ultimate and unleaded fuels. "More efficient and faster service for our customers is the main aim," said manager Dean Khoo. Ski resort’s first Asian food court By PAM ZIERKMAHONEY GENERAL manager of Buller Ski Lifts (BSL) Laurie Blampied quoted a Chinese proverb when congratulating Rose Yong on opening the Asian Food Court at The chalet - the first in any Australian ski resort on opening weekend. “Make happy those that are near and those that are not will follow,” he said. Laurie introduced Rose Yong – although he said she needed very little introduction as she has had an association with Mt Buller for the past 21 years. Rose is also the owner and operator of Extra Green Travel and has been bringing visitors to the mountain since 1988 after founding her Extra Green Travel company. Originally from Malaysia, Rose has been adventurous over the years in travel and hospitality. PoPo’s is not Rose’s first venture into this field as in 1998 she started summer tours to the high country and bringing guests to Almrausch – now Koala Lodge – she would cook for all of her guests. Extra Green became BSL’s largest trade partner in 2012 and last year brought more than 14,500 guests to Buller. “She is a trail blazer in many

“On behalf of the Grollo family and BSL I would like to give this statue to Rose in recognition of her past and future achievements.” Following the official opening Chinese ceremonies then

New totem pole heightens local sculpture collection

VISITORS to Mt Buller will not miss the latest in sculptures installed on the climb up the mountain. Known as the Mt Buller Totem Pole, the new and unique sculpture was designed and built by locally renowned Mansfield artist Dick Forrest. The totem pole is located in Chain Bay 3, making it a stunning feature to view as visitors drive up to the resort. Throughout his 67 years, Dick Forrest, a Barjarg farmer, has always been involved in some form of art. Being able to see a final result in pieces of twisted steel, or a pile of rocks, has led him on a journey, resulting in his latest production, the Mt Buller Totem Pole (the great thunder god snow, totem pole). His farm ‘Stumphill’ is not your typical farm. Along the track leading into the farm one quickly recognises whimsical creations: Ned Kelly, a speed camera, a bright red dragon, bikes of many shapes and sizes to name a few. Then there are rock structures in different paddocks, some painted, others an Australian version of Stonehenge. Some will be familiar with Dick’s large blue bike sculpture, which has been located at the entrance to Mansfield and at Mt
Check your bindings before you ski
So check all those screws. A great idea is to carry one of many pocket binding tools. How long should ski bindings last? In theory they should last for years and years but the binding manufacturers suggest that a useful life is from 8 to 10 years. In fact every year they produce a list of bindings that they recommend can still be used safely and that technicians are permitted to adjust. I don’t know how often I’ve had to suggest to a client who has pulled some older skis out of the storage cupboard to rent skis rather than use some bindings. Snowboard bindings don’t have the safety issues as some ski bindings but the plastics they are made of do deteriorate due to UV exposure over time. Launched in December 2013, the Sculpture Park Walk features 12 sculptures that have been installed on a year-round basis, including Louis Pratt’s ‘Voyeur’, winner of the inaugural Mt Buller Sculpture Park and Award in 2013, and ‘Emergence’ by Deborah Redwood, a colourful and quirky display of snow skis emerging out of the soil. The park also boasts three pieces by talented Michael Meszaros who has lived as a full time sculptor for 30 years. The newly installed totem pole is just one of many exceptional pieces that make up the Mt Buller Sculpture Park Walk. The artistic display will remain in place year-round giving visitors the opportunity to view the sculptures in varied alpine conditions depending on the season. SKI bindings need to be checked with your boots at least once or twice a season. As we all know bindings don’t always release when you fall, particularly when it’s at slower speeds. There are several adjustments that should be checked. Skiers and snowboarders alike need to check their bindings from time to time. Ski bindings are subject to heaps of vibrations and as such you can find that some of the boot to binding adjustments can go out of whack, causing your bindings to either release prematurely or even not at all when they should. The din / release setting can move. If you’ve changed boot length or your weight has varied since the last time you used your skis means it’s time to have you bindings checked and adjusted by a qualified ski tech. The mounting screws of snowboard bindings can work loose too. This can cause your bindings to move on your board when you least want it to. There are so many other screws and nuts that can come loose. The worst thing that can happen is a component failure while riding and you end up walking.

Wendy’s one-woman show coming up on mountain PRESENTING a one person art exhibition is a lot of work, but for local Mt Buller and Mansfield artist Wendy Jagger her one-woman art exhibition is exciting. ‘Snowline’ will be presented from Saturday, August 8 to August 31 in the reception area of Alpine Central, Summit Road. An official opening of the exhibition, which includes a variety of mediums and works, will be held from 5.30pm to 7.30pm on August 8. Wendy said recently that putting together her exhibition she had to keep in mind what works in the snow and what doesn’t. She loves working in oils but when painting in an alpine lodge the odours can become too strong so she works in glass paint and acrylics for many of her snow paintings. However, it will possibly be her ceramics that will steal the show.

Wendy is renowned for her ‘fine ceramics’ that are translucent and beautifully etched with forest and mountain scenes. Her studio in Mansfield is dotted with ceramic pieces in various stages of completion but all have distinct alpine themes – much the same as her paintings. “I manage a lodge on Mt Buller over winter and can often be seen sitting on my ‘beach’ chair in the snow sketching and painting – I find it relaxing and inspiring,” she said. Snowline exhibition is being supported by the Mt Buller Summer School, Mt Buller Mt Stirling Arts Council and the Arts Council of Mansfield. All works are for sale.

Respect road and track closures in forests and parks TRACKS in Upper Murray, Murrindindi, Ovens and Goulburn fire districts were closed from Tuesday, June 9 as part of the annual seasonal closures program with Parks Victoria. and parks to stay on the designated routes, take their rubbish home and take particular care with campfires, so that everyone can enjoy the bush. “The majority of forest users are aware of the seasonal closure dates and respect the closures that are put in place for environmental, safety and road maintenance issues, however, a small minority do not obey the closures. “These people do considerable damage to our gates and other infrastructure. “This kind of vandalism costs the department dearly
and is on top of the costs to re-do the tracks that are ruined in wet conditions.” Damage to seasonal road closure gates, bollards and unauthorised driving are offences under the Forest Act 1958. SCV announces Whitt apartments development THE Ski Club of Victoria (SCV) has moved forward with its development of “The Whitt Apartments”, adjacent to the Ivor Whittaker Memorial Lodge in Summit Road, Mt Buller. Peter McIntyre, one of Australia’s most celebrated architects, has designed the apartments, which although were set to feature two bedrooms, two bathrooms, open plan kitchenliving/dining, laundry, drying and storage facilities, balcony and an undercover car park, can now be re-designed from two to four bed apartments to suit the buyer. With a very affordable starting price of $590,000 the apartments can now be contracted ready for construction hopefully over the summer of 2015-16.
