THE success of Mt Buller’s Mountain Pygmy Possum recovery program has been highly praised during the opening of the 2016 snow season.

Both ARMB board chair Jennifer Hutchison and chief executive officer John Huber mentioned the success of the program to reinstate a healthy colony of the tiny creatures that were in fear of extinction.

Mr Huber also praised the work of the environmental team on Buller, in particular Louise Perrin, head of the environmental department.

“The mountain pygmy possum story at Mt Buller is a pretty rare example of where Australian threatened species management has succeeded,” Ms Perrin said.

“This past summer, as we undertook our standard monitoring, we were staggered by the numbers – we now have more than 140 mountain pygmy possums – more now than when they were first rediscovered in 1996.

It was initially thought the possum to be extinct, however, a live possum was found at Mt Hotham as early as in 1966.

“They are very small, live deep down in rock boulderfields (not trees) in tiny habitat patches at high elevations and

hibernate from May to October – meaning they are not often seen,” Ms Perrin said.

“Over the years, their habitat has been lost and/or fragmented (meaning loss of genetic diversity) and feral predators (particularly foxes and cats) have been happily munching on them.”

When they were re-discovered at Mt Buller in 1996, around 80 individuals were trapped.

Resort management, with BSL and DSE (now DELWP) developed a recovery plan, which was implemented from 2005 to 2010.

Key actions were to connect previously fragmented habitat, revegetate habitat, undertake integrated yearround ongoing predator control programs, reduce sediment impacting habitat and to improve education and awareness of the species.

Back from the brink of extinction

The following autumn, more than 50 per cent of the juvenile possums caught had a percentage of Mt Hotham genetics.

“In 2011, we had 48 possums so we were pretty sure we’d hit on the winning formula,” Ms Perrin said.

“We undertook another translocation the following spring with another six males – this time from Mt Bogong (to fully soup up the genetic diversity) and again saw terrific results the following autumn.”

Next on the agenda is the 2017-2021 recovery plan.

“We still have some work to do; we continue to revegetate habitat and we are looking at another novel approach (intra-site translocations) to establish populations in areas of habitat which are currently unused,” Ms Perrin said.

“It’s pretty cool that a small group of passionate people have been able to work together to get this species back on track at Mt Buller.

“And we are providing extremely valuable information not only for management of mountain pygmy possums in the wild in Australia, but also for threatened species management in general,” Ms Perrin concluded.

From page 1 “By the end of 2010 we had rebuilt habitat using 4000 cubic metres of rock re-creating boulder-fields, installed 10 rock tunnels to link previously fragmented sites and planted around 75,000 food and shelter plants in key habitat areas,” Ms Perrin said.

“We had also developed, and continue to implement, our year-round predator control programs.

“Some 182 sediment traps were installed to catch sediment before it reached boulder-fields and we have established the mini habitat areas in the Village and at the Ski School to raise awareness of the species – along with information available on our websites and through brochures.

“By 2010, we caught 30 animals (remembering that snowgum woodlands which link the boulder-fields had been destroyed by fires in 2006-2007 burning 10 per cent of the boulder-field habitat).

“As population was not recovering as it should we developed the next recovery plan for the species – 2011 to 2016 - and began the next set of works.

“We’d collected genetic material (simply a hair sample containing the hair follicle) from each individual caught over the years of monitoring and the analysis of these samples revealed that although the population was growing, the genetic diversity was still low.”

This was the factor hampering the full recovery of mountain pygmy possums on Mt Buller and prompted the team to take control and undertake a novel in

Morrices are staying on THE Morrices are not leaving their beloved Mt Buller.

Inadvertently in the first issue of Mt Buller News on June 8 it was reported that Stephen and Michele Morrice were selling their business, Stephen’s Fine Foods in Mansfield, and leaving Mt Buller.

However, this is not so Michele said they have no intention of leaving Mt Buller or the Ajax Lodge and will remain doing what they have done for the past 29 years - looking after their guests.

Stephen and Michele are well known identities on the mountain and cater for up to 80 guests at a time hosting fine dinners and hospitality.

Huber optimistic for a great snow season at Mt Buller

By PAM ZIERKMAHONEY MT BULLER-Mt Stirling Alpine Resort Management’s chief executive ofďŹ cer John Huber made it very clear on opening weekend that all mountain staff and operators were there to make visitors welcome and to give them the best experience they could have this winter.

In addressing the large gathering at the opening cocktail party, John said he loved this time of year when it takes him about half an hour just to cross the village square as he meets up with so many familiar faces and welcomes them all back to the mountain after the summer break. “To stop and shake their hands and say hello is the loveliest thing about this mountain; it’s what it is all about – to be a part of this lovely community,� he said.

During the ofďŹ cial declaration of the season opening it snowed ‘on cue’, visitors enjoyed some fantastic activities and ďŹ nished off with fantastic ďŹ reworks - John thanked those involved in organising the whole opening events. “Tonight is the one night we can be optimistic about the season, the one night we can be sure that everything is shiny and ready for another great season,â€? he said.

“There is a huge amount of build-up and expectation about this winter period and we have worked all summer long towards it. “For a start we had a very busy summer, visitation was up ďŹ ve per cent which is outstanding and we also saw some additional lodges opening for the ďŹ rst time over summer to meet the needs of visitors out there. “But more importantly we have seen more and more visitors coming to experience the

Alps over summer – this is fantastic. “But like you, who have been busy working on your businesses over summer, the resort management has been doing the same, working on improvements. “BSL is again supporting RMB and has continued to expand with extensive upgrading of snowmaking (11 new snowguns), which means more snow, more often across the ski runs including the favourite

places with lots more snow, such as Shakey Knees, Wombat and Family runs. “We continue to work on number one priority, the water storage project. “As we all know it is very critical to support the long term sustainability and prosperity of the resort – and although we were disappointed that this critical project failed to get funding in this year’s state budget, we will continue to press on. “Around the village we have seen many changes as well, new lighting, new heating on paths for safety and new additions to our sculpture park – so I hope you have an opportunity to see these.�

John made mention of the renovations and changes made to several of the businesses around the village including the Black Cockatoo CafĂŠ, the Black Cockatoo Restaurant, the Buller Fish and Chippery, and the Foodworks store now called Buller Grocers – “it looks fantasticâ€?, he commented. “And the Mt Buller Photo Shop – welcome back Tony and Rhylla to Mt Buller and to the team,â€? he said.

John also pointed out that Mt Stirling had not been forgotten and had received many new amenities over summer including new shelters, track upgrades and products which includes fat bikes that can be used over winter.

Enjoy the snow on election day – vote early MT BULLER and Mt Stirling mountain staff who are planning to be at the snow on election day Saturday, July 2, are reminded to make sure you vote before you go.

The Australian electoral officer for Victoria, Jeff Pope, is urging all skiers and snowboarders to vote before they travel to the snowfields so they can be free to enjoy the snow on election day.

The location and opening hours of early voting centres can be found at www.aec.gov.au/where or by calling 132 326. “There are some early voting centres available in towns surrounding the snowfields, however, we are strongly recommending snow goers vote before they go so they don’t miss out on having their say,� Mr Pope said.

Mansfield will have a pre-polling day venue at the CWA Hall, High Street (eastern end) from June 20.

Heart starters strategically placed on Buller

HERE ‘TIS: Ambulance community support officer Terry Lyons indicates where the Village Plaza defibrillator is placed on the wall for easy access – with instructions on how to access and use the machine alongside it.

HEART attacks can occur at any time to anyone – but on Mt Buller there is quick action help at hand when this happens.

Portable defibrillators have been placed at various spots around the mountain and are accessible for use should someone have a heart attack while on the slopes or around the village.

Ambulance community support officer Terry Lyons has been behind a program that has seen more than a dozen defibrillators placed in lodges, central areas and popular eateries.

“We want everyone to be aware

of where these defibrillators are placed so quick action can be carried out if needed,” Terry said.

“Ambulance officers are calling on businesses and lodges over the next few weeks making sure mountain staff and lodge owners know where these machines are placed and how to access them.

“Although a set of instructions have been placed next to each machine cabinet, once in use the machine will talk the user through the process - perhaps saving someone’s life,” he said.

“But we cannot stress enough that while these machines may save someone’s life, it is still necessary to call paramedics to

ensure that that life carries on and the patient can be transported to the nearest hospital.

“The best and fastest way to get paramedic help is to dial 000 and if necessary the operators will have a list of where these defibs are placed and how to access them,” Terry said.

The campaign to see defibrillator machines placed around the mountain has been supported by lodge owners, the ARMB and BSL, who have all put their hands in their pockets – or dipped into their budgets – and purchased them.

Cattleman’s – entry; Control Centre (top of Abom Chair – downstairs); Koflers Restaurant – near exit; Patrol Base; Pension Grimus – reception; Ski School level 4 – entry; Spurs – entry; Tirol – entry; The Whit – front entry; Wombat Lift Hut (top); Village Plaza (formerly Cow Camp) near back entrance door; and RMB Alpine Central – main entry.

involvement on the mountain with James Snr (grandfather to young James) being one of the original members of the club – and helped in building the lodge.

Chris related that as young as four years of age he can remember accompanying his dad up the mountain and learning to ski.

“We used to have to park the cars down the mountain a bit and backpack everything up to the lodge,” Chris said.

“It was usually a boy’s only weekend when we came up as it was sometimes too much for the ladies to make that trek.”

Chris said much has changed over those 50 years and acknowledged the lodge was built by a group in 1966 with many of the original families still associated.

Rossignol to host new ladies only event NEW in 2016 is the Ski Club of Victoria Rossignol Ladies day.

This event promises to be a fantastic day for mothers, daughters, friends and relatives.

It is a chance to have a day on the snow with a like-minded group of women and enjoy the sun drenched slopes of Mt Buller while skiing in five star luxury.

A feature of the Rossignol ladies day is that women of all skiing abilities are welcomed.

The only prerequisite is that you are competent on blue runs.

The morning starts with a briefing from the Rossignol team and then skis are allocated for the first run of the day.

A low key technical session makes sure that everyone is well versed on how the new skis will perform.

As part of the program, the “Ski Butler”, Phillippe Goodman, will be on hand all day.

His role is to adjust buckles, check bindings, rub shoulders, fit skis and pour wine.

There will be a Rossignol test station outside Koflers where ladies will be able to test numerous ski models during the day and get instruction from French technician, Maxence Gozzi.

Ski and putt - all for teaching kids snow sports CALLING all skiers and golfers - join us for a day of fun.

Mark Adams is again sponsoring the annual ski and golf day on Friday, July 1 and invites all to get some friends together, build a team of four and have a fantastic day on the snow, and the fairways.

The charity day raises money towards the 2016 Mansfield schools’ skiing and snowboarding programs.

Money raised will be distributed between Mansfield Primary, Mansfield Secondary, St Mary’s Primary, Merrijig Primary, Jamieson Primary, the Steiner School and the Mt Buller Sports and Recreation Association to support local kids learning snow sports at Mt Buller.

Last year more than $21,000 was raised.

The RT Edgar Calcutta will be held on Thursday, June 30 at the ABOM Moosehead Bar. Drinks start 7pm with dinner at 7.30pm and is only $55 per person – Antipasto Platter to start, followed by a two course set menu and drinks at bar prices.

It is not the fastest team

that wins, rather the team with the least time difference between their 1st and 2nd runs in a Parallel Giant Slalom.

It is consistency that counts (even if it is consistently slow).

New wheelchair for narrow spaces MT BULLER ambulance officers have a special new wheelchair – made for getting patients down narrow staircases such as many of the lodges have.

Demonstrating the stair chair at Mt Buller recently, Marty Shaw said the Ferno Stair Chair not only made it easier to get patients down narrow stairs but was also a safety chair for ambulance officers – protecting them from back injuries and lifting.

The chair folds up compactly when not being used; and just as quickly unfolds again when needed.

It has ordinary wheels for moving on flat ground but then has special rubber traction tracks for ease of sliding down stairs.

Marty said often alpine lodges, especially the older ones, have narrow stairs which makes it impossible to get stretchers up and down.

This chair – for injuries on ankles, legs, arms or just for a very ill person – can be used on narrow staircases as it is not much wider than the normal person.

It glides over the edge of stairs with one person at the top and another guiding it from the bottom – there is no ‘lifting’ involved as the traction grips

HERE WE GO: Demonstrating how the ‘stair chair’ works are (top) ambulance paramedic Marty Shaw, patient Julian Filkin and ambulance community officer Terry Lyons. the edge of each step allowing it to move slowly.

Folding away neatly the stair chair can also be carried on a snowmobile for quick response over ski runs when

attending to emergencies.

But the main advice for people who may have injuries or need ambulance officers to attend is to call 000 for faster response.

STAGE 2 – AN AFTERNOON OF GOLFING IN MANSFIELD: The ski racing will wrap up around 10am and everyone

heads down the mountain to the beautiful Mansfield Golf Club.

Teams gather at the club from 11am and everyone heads down the mountain to the midday tee-off.

The golf format will be 4-person Ambrose.

Again, it is a team effort with the best ball on each stroke counting.

The day will conclude with presentations at the Golf Club rooms.

It does not get much better – a ski in the morning and a hit of golf with friends in the afternoon and it is all for a great local cause.

Mountain Memories – Blue and Orange take your choice

THE opening weekend of the snow season is always a great opportunity to catch up with old ski and snowboard buddies.

The anticipation of big snow storms is palpable and there is a real hum in the air.

Like everyone, I too got socialising.

And we started reminiscing of days gone by, like when we had two lift companies on Buller - that’s right, Blue Lifts and Orange Lifts – but that was back in the early ‘70s.

So how did it work?

Blue had the French Ski School, Orange the Austrian Ski School.

Every skier (no boarders back then) had to make a choice as to where they wanted to ski.

Often the weather played a major role in this decision.

If it was a sunny blue bird day, Orange Lifts was the go.

Orange had the Summit with its duplex pomas, Howqua poma that was renowned for almost pulling punters out of their boots at take off, Boggy Creek T-bar and Federation T-bar - the one that would lift and spin kids in circles as it climbed the Bluff.

Your only option was to hang on tight and as you reached the top of the Bluff try to get a ski tip to act as a rudder and guide you back on to the t-bar track, hopefully facing the right way.

If you went Orange and the weather turned, Tirol and Shaky Knees were great bail out options.

But if you looked out the window, and it was a classic Buller day – snow, a bit of rain, fog and relentless wind, then the choice was Blue Lifts.

They owned the awesome Bull Run Valley and linked up with Chamois.

The Bull Run T-bar was legendary.

Legendary steep that is… plenty of victims took the slide straight down the tow line taking out t-bar after t-bar.

It was genuinely frightening and really dangerous when icy and rock hard.

And then sometimes it

MT BULLER seemed like the entire Buller community was in the queue down at Bull Run - a 50-60 minute wait being a regular occurrence.

You could have walked out quicker, but nobody ever did.

Linked to Bull Run, Blue Lifts also had the Chamois Poma, another where you had to hang on for dear life as a kid.

The poma would spin and twist in a couple of spots, and eventually bring you back to earth.

On the other side of the village Blue also had one of my favourites called Whitiker - initially a short poma that eventually was extended.

You may have guessed… it dropped down from behind the SCV, was a great pitch, and as kids we owned it.

We got in tight with the lifty, built jumps, launched massive poma take offs and generally ran amuck, out of sight of the masses.

Its close proximity to George’s Ski Hire (back then it was Molonys) meant we could easily zip in and out to grab shovels to build more jumps, change skis to what we called ‘shorties’ (ie cut offs) and even test dad’s 210cm GS skis.

The iconic Bourke St was shared.

Blue had the two-seater chair that started in the heart of the village right adjacent to the Molonys building.

The wait line would snake up Little Bourke St beside the Magic Forrest.

And Orange had the three-poma lines that commenced from Helicopter Flat.

Two went to the top of Baldy - one detoured to the summit.

Massive queues and long waits were standard.

It was the breeding ground of the professional junior queue jumper, learning to skilfully navigate your way through a forest of legs, stealth mode.

Pasta perfection at Merrijig’s Mill Inn

MERRIJIG is famous for a lot of things.

Soaring Alpine peaks, views, fishing in the Delatite River and a country atmosphere like you won’t find anywhere else.

However, tucked away into the side of a hill is one of Merrijig’s best kept secrets; the Mill Inn Restaurant at the entrance to Alpine Ridge.

From the outside, you would be forgiven for thinking the Mill Inn was just another restaurant.

But, once inside, there is no doubt this boutique establishment offers a unique take on fine dining.

Surrounded by glass windows, the first thing you notice about the Mill Inn is the large raised stone fireplace, with its surrounding hotbed of rocks and vaulted ceiling above.

The seating is arranged in a way that every diner is offered a view of the surrounding bush, while being able to relax in the intimate and private setting.

But it is the menu, and the man behind it, that really takes

the Mill Inn to the next level.

Marcus and Vanessa van Clute are celebrating their first year at the Mill Inn, but Marcus has worked in kitchens across the world for almost 25 years.

Taking over the restaurant from former pasta chef, Michael Beltrame, Marcus has been able to bring his own brand of pasta making to the Mill Inn. “Our pasta is completely homemade, right here on the premises, each and every day,” he explained.

“Some weeks we produce almost 30 kilograms of pasta, depending on demand and the season.

“We prepare and make basically every type of pasta there is: from plain spaghetti to gnocchi and ravioli.”

Marcus and Vanessa have been able to infuse their Mediterranean style of cooking into the classical Italian menu, and now offer an indulgent array of dishes, such as the popular wild mushroom and leek ravioli with porcini cream, mascarpone, pine nuts and truffled rocket salad.

They also make their wildly popular paella, famous throughout the High Country

for being featured at festival events and private functions.

“We take a lot of pride in producing a product that not only looks great, but tastes amazing, and all in this unique building,” Marcus said.

The Mill Inn has also released a new range of pasta sauces, with brand new packaging, and has retail outlets in Mansfield such as the Alpine Butchery, along with some in the King Valley and Rutherglen.

The fresh pasta is also available for sale in take home tubs, but is only available on a first in best dressed basis.

Open from Thursday to Sunday each and every week, the Mill Inn offers something no other place in Mansfield or Mt Buller does.

LOCAL artist Wendy Jagger earlier this year had a piece of her ceramic artwork selected as a finalist in The Alice Prize.

Out of more than 400 entries, Mrs Jagger’s piece was one of the last 69.

A mixed medium art exhibition, past finalists of The Alice have included photographic works, paintings, sculpture and even HD video.

Known for its controversial winning pieces and contemporary approach to art, The Alice Prize is another feather in Wendy’s award winning cap.

“I’m really chuffed to be a finalist,” she said.

“I think it’s great that a piece of ceramics has been selected as a 3D finalist, instead of sculpture.”

Working with Southern Ice Porcelain, Australia’s world class product known for its translucent quality, Wendy crafted one of her unique pieces for inclusion in The Alice Prize.

The piece, known as Grevillea Victoriae, is a small white beaker that captures the light, echoing it from within.

It was inspired by the grevilleas growing wild around Mt Buller, and is a wheel thrown Southern Ice Porcelain vessel, with multiple etched layers which creates a translucent, bas-relief image.

Wendy said just to be nominated as a finalist was thrilling itself.

“It’s pretty amazing, I was really thrilled,” she said.

Already a multiple award winner, Wendy was also recognised internationally last year with her piece – Banks Treasure - making it into the final exhibition at the 9th International Ceramics Festival in Mino, Japan.

Competing against a field of nearly 3000 international entries, her piece received an honourable mention – an incredible coup.

During winter Wendy can often be seen either sketching or painting on Mt Buller - using the icy covered snow gums and other flora for inspiration.

Ski boots - your most important piece of equipment

THIS edition I want to talk about boot fitting and how having the correct boot can affect the enjoyment of your skiing.

As a general guide, when you’re standing upright in a correctly fitted boot, your toes should just be touching the end of your liner, and as you flex forward into a skiing position, your toes should pull back from the front.

They should not be bone crushingly tight but still feel like a firm hand shake with even pressure throughout.

When renting or buying boots you need to spend time to make sure you’re in the

correct size and shape.

Rushing invariably ends in disaster.

Boots that are extremely comfortable from the start are invariably way too big.

Boots only get bigger with wear.

Many people who rent find themselves trying to

control skis with boots that are way too big, to the point of slopping around and using one’s toes to try to grip the boot and end up cramping.

It is important to find a shell that closely matches the general shape of your foot.

That’s where a good boot fitter comes in.

It’s his or her job to know the shapes of all the boots and have the experience to match your foot shape to the shell shape.

Researching online or in magazines will not help you.

There is practically no good info to help one work out what boot will work best.

The best advice I can give is to seek out a store that has a good boot fitting reputation with a large range and offers backup should you need some later adjustment.

Ski boots should last from between 100-200 days but as you progress as a skier you

may find you need to upgrade to something stiffer, stronger and smaller to help you ski more effectively.

The more advanced the skier, the more precise the fit needs to be.

The energy transfer through your boots to your skis is what gives you control of your edges.

The more efficiently you can control your edges with a well-fitting boot, the more performance you can get out of your skis, right up to World Cup level.

Again, the best advice I can give is to seek out a professional boot fitter to help guide you through the process.

I’ve been fitting boots for about 38 years and have trained many certified Master Boot Fitters over the years as well as having possibly the largest range of boots in Australia.

opening of ski season three of Australia’s top Winter Olympic athletes were welcomed back to Buller – Brody Summers, Lydia Lassila and Anton Grimus. Lydia stayed over the weekend and hosted a viewing of her movie ‘The Will to Fly’ at the cinema on the Sunday afternoon. Stirling links with Estonia

ON DUTY: A 24 hour police response presence will be available this winter for Mt Buller.

Snow police confirmed on Mt Buller VICTORIA Police has confirmed there will be a 24hour presence in the alpine areas this winter, but according to Benalla District Inspector Dan Trimble it could not be confirmed whether police will be on the mountain or responding from Mansfield.

Insp Trimble said there are a limited number of police officers that need to be balanced and rostering had not been finalised.

Confirmation came after letters were sent to the Commissioner of Police Graham Ashton, Minister for Police Lisa Neville and Premier Daniel Andrews questioning reports that police would not be at ski resorts this season.

In a letter to Ms Neville, president of the Victorian Snowsports Association (VSA), Rob Anderson, stated the association had concerns with the accommodation and snow

sports users.

“The organisations affiliated with us comprise almost 100 per cent of the skiers and snowboarders using the Victorian Alps,” Mr Anderson said.

Mr Anderson said VSA supported the chief executive officers of the three major ski resorts in their quest to have mountain police present for the entire declared snow season.

Stuart Smythe (Falls Creek), John Huber (Mt Buller and Mt Stirling) and Jon Hutchins (Mt Hotham) in a joint letter to Ms Neville pointed out that each of the resorts is isolated from the neighbouring townships due to physical geography of the alps and the limited access in severe weather periods.

“In any emergency situation in such a high risk environment, the option to police ‘off mountain’ would see minimum response times for

vehicular police of not less than 45 minutes (at best) across all resorts.

“The consequences of this response time, under any number of reported incidents that occur in and around resorts would result in near fatal, if not fatal consequences,” the letter stated.

Resort managers are worried that if a 24 hour police presence was not available, then there could be dire consequences.

In Mansfield’s case it would take at least 45 minutes for officers to reach the village once called out, and that was if officers were available.

Mansfield police station is already undermanned and during winter rosters are more difficult once staff have to be split between Mt Buller and the township.

Kaupo Tammemae, brother of Joosep, who was a member of the Stirling team in 2014, is following in his brother’s footsteps and Ergo Kukk whose interest lies in cross country skiing and visiting Australia to teach.

Ergo is a journalism and communication student and is taking a break from school as he is also in the Estonian Defence Force.

Anna-Liis Kulpas is studying sports administration and training and has been working with children in OU Suusakool during the northern winter and Elina Ahtiainen is currently studying recreation in the University of Tallinn.

Both girls have a love of cross country skiing and compete and train regularly with OU Suusakool and their Estonian team of young athletes.

Also returning this year is head coach and Estonian OU Suusakool Ski School director Vahur Teppan, known to many Stirling skiers as “Vman”.

Vahur will be with the Stirling program for three weeks in August to work with instructors and run a competition race training program for skiers interested in honing their skills in preparation for the Kangaroo Hoppet.

THE country of Estonia is many thousand kilometres away from Mt Stirling resort and the Victorian High Country.

Over the years, however, a close link has been forged between the mountain and this small Northern European country in the Baltic region with a population of approximately 1.3 million people.

Each year, a crew of five young Estonians make the journey to Mt Stirling to teach cross country skiing, working for Stirling Experience.

Over the past 6-7 years, Stirling Experience owners Craig and Barb Jones have built up a strong rapport with their Estonian employees, and one that continues to flourish.

So what is the attraction that brings these young people all the way over each winter season?

Craig Jones explained there are a couple of key factors.

He said that the young instructors all study Outdoor Education at university in Estonia, so coming over to teach Australians how to crosscountry ski provides valuable practical experience as part of their studies.

“Those who come over are also highly qualified cross-country skiers themselves, at national or international level, and Mt Stirling offers a different and challenging environment for them,” he said.

Gaining experience in different conditions is the other key factor explained Craig.

“Over in Estonia, the country is almost entirely flat, and therefore so is the cross country terrain.

Spending our winter at Mt Stirling gives them a whole new and challenging terrain, with hills, valleys and mountain trails on which to train.

“As top level cross country skiers, it provides valuable fitness and stamina benefits training on the slopes of Stirling compared to back home,” said Craig.

This season’s crew are expected to arrive in early July.

Changing of the guard at The Arlberg Hotel ONE of Mt Buller’s stalwarts, John Perks, along with wife Carol, are readying for a changing of the guard at the popular Arlberg Hotel.

The Arlberg Hotel has been operated by John and Carol for the past 28 years.

John and Carol said while they would miss The Arlberg Hotel, they were looking forward to moving into the next phase of their lives with a focus on family and travel.

“We have both loved having input to the Chamber of Commerce and the marketing committees on the mountain and have enjoyed the last 37 years’ involvement very much and will be very sad to move on,” the couple said.

“We hope to be able to pass our history and knowledge on to new people with the drive and enthusiasm that this business deserves going forward.”

“The resort commission has also invested significant infrastructure costs on and around the mountain for these activities,” Mr Wells said.

“The ever-increasing summer calendar of events means that the mountain maintains visitation year round.”
