OPENING weekend on Mt Buller was a beauty.

Update on Buller CFA winter season staffing

By DAVID MIMS MT BULLER fire station will be staffed by a roster of operations officers from District 23 during the winter snow season.

Due to a lower number of on-mountain volunteers, CFA District 23 headquarters have assigned operations officer

Paul Scragg to Mt Buller station for winter.

An additional operations officer will be rostered on with Mr Scragg on weekends (Friday evening to Monday morning), while during the week there will always be one operations officer on duty.

The placement of an op-

erations officer permanently on-mountain during the snow season has happened for the past few seasons now.

In the past, volunteers have usually been drawn from people living permanently on the mountain, however, in recent years these numbers have declined, hence the change

to two full-time officers on weekends this season.

Back up will come from Mansfield and Merrijig brigades who stand ready to respond to any call-outs, however, distance and weather conditions will mean a delay of between 30 minutes and an hour for those brigades to get to the top.

For major incidents, further resources can be called in from other Mansfield area brigades and from Wangaratta headquarters, plus assistance from other emergency services.

Speaking about the arrangements, Stewart Kreltszheim, District 23 operations manager said: “CFA District 23 North

East Region has formulated a plan to ensure that we have operational and brigade support on the mountain 24/7 during the snow season and to work with the brigade, the community, the RMB and other emergency service organisations to protect life and property.”

“Having opened a whole week ahead of the ‘official’ weekend celebrations, Mt Buller resort was buzzing,” she said.

“It was certainly the biggest opening weekend we have seen in recent years, if not ever, and the numbers through the gate and on the slopes were considerably above the 10-year average.

“We were lucky to have a great combination of early snowfalls, plus the assurance of snow product that the Snow Factory gives us, as well as sunshine for the official opening which meant snow lovers could book their visit with confidence and enjoy all we had to offer across the weekend.”

At a break in festivities, there was also one very important formality to be ticked off – the announcement of the new chief executive officer of Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management.

Mark Bennetts was duly unveiled in the role in the Village Square.

Chair of the Mt Buller and Mt Stirling Alpine Resort Management Board Jacqui Jennings said the board is looking forward to a strong and stable future for the organisation.

“We are very pleased to have Mark accept the role as CEO,” said Ms Jennings.

“We were fortunate to have a large number of strong contenders for the position, and worked through a comprehensive recruitment process.

“Mark’s extensive experience in leadership, governance and risk management, as well as proven track record in accommodation and hospitality ensures he is well placed to guide the resorts and the team into the future.”

Tuning up brings top award for Pullin’s

THE Ski Industry Association of Australia has bestowed upon Pullin’s Ski Hire of Mansfield their top award for the third time.

Taking out the award for Best Tuning Store for 2016 – Leroy Johnston, operator, said this was a real plus for Mansfield as it was also three out of four years in a row that Pullin’s have taken the award.

“This is very impressive and a legacy left to us from Chris Pullin; we have just managed to carry on with the tuning prowess instilled in the staff, and in the years since taking over the business,” Mr Johnston said.

The tuning staff at the store includes Leroy Johnston, Tim Day and Evan Johnstone.

“The importance of tuning equipment correctly enables the rider/skier to turn easily, handle the ice and also gain consistent speed,” he said.

Pullin’s has such a reputation that skis and boards are sent from as far away as Sydney and other parts of NSW to be tuned.

“We have tuned ski and board equipment for world cup athletes – including of course Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin and Olympians.

“We use Wintersteiger Race tuning equipment and Montana lazer waxing; and have a

long association with SWIX tune waxes and tuning equipment – one of the biggest brands in the industry.”

Between the three tuning staff members they have almost 80 years’ experience – that is why they are perhaps classed as tops.

BN: It was good timing to get it done before opening weekend.

What are your first impressions up here today and tonight?

MB: My first impressions are that there is an enormous amount of enthusiasm obviously on the mountain.

The people up here are really, really passionate.

In terms of the job, I have one role to play, and everybody has their role to play, and no role is more or less important than other roles.

So really my focus is on how we ensure that all the roles are clicking together and working.

Together we will continue to build on the platform we have here that’s been given

to us by the people who have come before us, all the legends who have done the hard work and who have done a fantastic job.

Working together we will get more people, and more Victorians, up here and enjoying this wonderful place.

My impressions are that there is enormous enthusiasm and goodwill, and hopefully I can do my part among our broader team.

BN: An Ombudsman’s report was handed down recently concerning the resort management board.

Is there some work to be done restoring confidence and transparency in mountain operations in light of what the Ombudsman found?

MB: I know it’s one of the things the board is looking for, obviously, given the Ombudsman’s report.

There’s a very clear focus on being very accurate, tight, correct, proper, appropriate, and upholding these values.

A significant part of my background at RACV was in corporate services and in governance related activities, so I’m well aware of the need for us to say we need good governance and we need common sense and strong management, so the team can say, “yeah, we are feeling good about ourselves”.

The team has been working without a leader for a while and getting all of this stuff to happen, so they are very, very capable.

But my role is to try and help put the structures in place so that we will be doing the right thing all the time.

I would like us to become a role model in that particular space.

I have no idea whether the other mountains are better or worse, but we need to be bloody good.

That’s on top of the list of things that need to get done.

BN: Do you have a vision for the mountain?

MB: If I go back to my point about teamwork – I have one role to play.

My vision for the mountain is no more or less

important than anybody else’s vision for the mountain.

However, I think the strength is going to come from everybody’s vision, because the best one is likely to be a collective of the different points of view.

Having said that, in my position of ignorance 24 hours in, the three words I’m trying to think about are ‘build bigger, better’ Buller and Stirling.

The “building” part is really about people: building governance, building management, and building connections with people.

Not just the staff inside but everybody who has a role to play on the mountain and off the mountain.

In terms of “bigger”, I don’t necessarily mean buildings, I mean bigger in terms of people coming here.

And this is not rocket science; people have been having a crack at this for years and years.

Victorians have got to be our key target.

We are three hours out of Melbourne, it’s the biggest draw potential we’ve got.

I’ll be absolutely focused on how we get more Victorians that have been here to come back, and those that haven’t been here to come.

We’re talking all walks of life.

When you look at the ethnic mix, we would want to continue to try and work on changing that.

How can we encourage people to feel included, and not just an anglo-saxon view, for example.

So the “bigger” part is all around the people.

The “better” part is really around, first and foremost, snow.

I understand full well how important the water storage is so we can make more snow in the face of climate change.

We need to have better snow for longer if we can.

We want to have better experiences about the access to the mountain and the arrival.

So there’s a whole bunch of things like that to make it better, and I do think that if we get the team working together and if we do those better things, the bigger will happen.

Be prepared on the roads this winter THE Transport Accident Commission is urging Victorian motorists to plan ahead, eliminate distractions and ensure their vehicles are safe when driving in and around the snow this ski season.

Another bumper season is underway at the state’s popular resorts, including Mount Buller, Mount Hotham and Falls Creek, with people travelling from across Victoria and interstate to hit the slopes.

TAC chief executive officer Joe Calafiore said motorists should take into account several factors to ensure a safe journey including weather, road conditions, fatigue, distractions and their behaviour.

“Victoria’s snow fields are among Australia’s great drawcards and they attract huge numbers of visitors from far and wide each year,” Mr Calafiore said.

“We are urging everyone travelling in and around the alpine region, or making the journey home, to plan ahead and allow enough time, get plenty of sleep the night before, and take rest stops along the way.”

Four people have died on roads surrounding Victoria’s alps in the past five ski seasons, and Mr Calafiore implored motorists to take every precaution to ensure the figure was zero this year.

“Wintry weather only magnifies the dangers of driving and people should be aware that conditions can change quickly, particularly in and around the mountains,” Mr Calafiore said.

“When weather or road conditions are poor, it becomes even more important to slow down, stay alert, drive to the conditions and keep a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front.

means eliminating distractions – put your phone away.”

Black ice, fog, mist, rain, wind and land slips are all potential hazards during winter months on roads in alpine areas.

Mr Calafiore said people could prevent a tragedy by ensuring both they and their vehicles were prepared for unpredictable conditions.

“You must ensure that you have the correct tyres, chained if necessary, and they are in good condition, along with your brakes, and ensure all lights are working so they can be switched on in low visibility,” he said.

“We want everyone to travel to the mountains and get home safely and the choices people make and condition of their vehicles will go a long way towards a safe ski season on our roads.”

Athlete’s Walk, Mt Buller Village

Alkira Ski Club: a retrospective Rob Aivatoglou THE application to finance and build Alkira Ski Club on Lot 82 Mt Buller was made on September 14, 1964.

There were 23 foundation members (skiing families) that provided an initial sum of 200 pounds each with John Pendavingh nominated president, and Ian Dent secretary.

The quotation for the build was 48,000 pounds.

Forest Commissions Victoria granted the licence on December 11, 1964.

During construction of the lodge the building contractors were accommodated in a tin shed in the parking area.

Early snowfalls and frost made construction particularly challenging.

Fortunately for them, the Royal Children’s Hospital Lodge assisted with warm rooms.

Without this kind gesture, Alkira would not have been completed for occupancy for the approaching winter.

That first snow season in 1965 proved somewhat disappointing.

After so much effort by all the members to have Alkira ready, it was only towards the end of July that the snow was skiable on all tows.

The first lodge

master in occupancy was Steve Schwarz, whose wife Barbara also lays claim to the first knee injury.

Alan Pilgrim had the first torn knee ligament, while Andrew Fraser achieved the longest occupancy by a single member for that first season with 86 bed nights.

At the other end of the scale, four members did not make use of the lodge at all.

Alkira’s historical records show that in that first year, during the 15 weeks of winter occupancy, there were 552 member bed nights and 406 guest bed nights.

It was a close knit and happy group of skiers.

Today, some of the original members still use the lodge and many of the children of the original members now hold membership in their own right and use the lodge along with their children.

Alkira is a very active lodge, with many activities being held during the year including their annual ski races that include giant slalom, and the only club in Australia to hold a downhill.

Over the years many members have been part of Team Buller and the Mt Buller Race Club.

organised on request with a minimum of four participants required to run a session.

What you need MountainSafe will provide an avalanche beacon, shovel and probe to use on the day of the course - you will need: ski or snowboard gear; a valid resort lift ticket.

Buller a family affair for Stephen Schwarz

By KATIE COULTHARD IT all started with a phone call and a simple question– “do you want to join a ski club?”

Stephen Schwarz was initially hesitant, but several beers later, friends had convinced him and concocted a plan to purchase land and build a ski lodge, now known as Alkira on Chamois Close.

It was 1964.

With $400 pooled together, the determined group dug foundations of the lodge in October and defied their doubters to ski from the completed lodge the following winter, less than a year later.

Newly minted as a father and with another baby on the way, Stephen and wife Barbara could already see this investment in Alkira was going to be beneficial for their growing ski family.

Fifty years later, Alkira Lodge has housed three generations of the Schwarz family and their friends during the winter holidays.

Although the lodge is open to members of the public, stays at Alkira are a family affair and have become somewhat of a tradition in the Schwarz household.

Stephen and Barbara are now honorary life members

and son Chris is the current president.

Continuing in their father’s footsteps, Stephen’s other two sons have become well acquainted with the mountain and their children now work at the Ski School part-time during the season.

While Stephen is a regular face at Mt Buller, his life extends to many other areas.

Born in Austria, Stephen and his family left Europe for Australia when he was a child and soon settled into the country.

Educated at Xavier College in Melbourne’s Kew, Stephen went on to study pharmacy

and after several decades of practice, continues to work as a locum at home on the Mornington Peninsula.

Describing himself, Stephen admits he’s a busy man.

“I hardly have time for work,” he says.

When the snow season ends, Stephen occupies his time with social and sporting activities like competitive sailing and bike riding.

Now in his eighties, Stephen’s love affair with the mountain has not dwindled.

Although wife Barbara no longer joins him on the slopes, she’s full of praise for Mt Buller’s ski services team

who scoot her up the mountain to join her husband for a coffee at the Alzburg.

Plenty has changed since Stephen first visited Mt Buller.

Now one of Victoria’s major alpine resorts and top tourist attractions, the popularity of the mountain has soared.

“It’s much better organised compared to the sixties, but unfortunately on weekends, the place gets too crowded,” he says.

In the wake of climate change, the introduction of snowmaking technology and new ways of preserving snow has helped Mt Buller combat the threat but the future is uncertain.

“The weather is starting to let us down, and it doesn’t snow as much or as often as it used to,” he admits.

“The season is too short and where that’s leading us, I’m not too sure.”

Stephen is confident there will be enough snow for the next few years but remains concerned about his grandchildren and whether or not they will be able to enjoy the same winter lifestyle both Barbara and Stephen remember fondly.

Looking ahead, Stephen has no plans to pack up the skis anytime soon.

“I’ll never stop,” he says defiantly.

DRIVERS headed out around MansďŹ eld this winter are being urged to plan ahead and drive to the conditions.

With heavy fog blanketing much of MansďŹ eld this week, it is advisable to drive more cautiously and at slower speeds than would normally be travelled.

Combine the fog with black ice, snow, increased traffic and wet weather and the roads are considerably more dangerous than in the warmer months.

VicRoads regional director eastern, Scott Lawrence, said adjusting driving behaviour during

How big a threat is climate change to Victoria’s snow industry?

By KATIE COULTHARD RISING average temperatures, increased rainfall, and unpredictable weather patterns - there’s no doubt that certainty of a decent snow season is waning in the 21st century.

The ongoing threat of climate change delivers a poor prognosis to those invested in alpine environments.

But closer examination of the figures shows tourism continues to thrive, despite lesser surety of snowfall.

According to statistics from the Alpine Resorts Co-ordinating Council, Mt Buller and its naturebased counterpart, Mt Stirling, have seen over 320,000 tourists driving through the gates since opening weekend in early June until end of season in mid September (2016).

In some weeks, the mountains saw a 75 per cent increase in tourism from the previous year.

While 2016 brought a healthy dose of snowfall to the alps, it’s no indication this year will spell out the same prosperity.

Relying on the attraction of snow is not enough and Mt Buller’s management board and staff have devised a strategy to counteract the threat of the industry is under.

“Since those early days, our planning and strategic work has been looking to make best use of the mountains year round,” she said.

“Traditionally, Victoria’s snow destinations have seen visitors come for recreational activities such as downhill skiing and snowboarding.

“Nowadays the majority of tourists are more interested in sightseeing.

“There is a demise of the ski industry, they’re heading overseas for a more guaranteed option of snow, but alpine areas can still provide a great place for a first experience – to see and to touch.”

Ms Perrin said once it was established overall tourism is not influenced by the amount of snow, the resort changed their tactics and focused on promoting the area in both the shoulder season and in summer months.

“The plan is to have resorts focus on their strengths, regardless of the weather,” Ms Perrin said.

Dr Andrew King, a climate

extremes research fellow at the University of Melbourne, echoes a similar sentiment about the future of Mount Buller.

“Climate change is a big problem because with a small amount of warming, it becomes economically less viable to have a big ski industry in Australia,” he said.

“Weather systems are changing and cold fronts are less likely so instead of bringing snow, it brings rain.”

Dr King says although the snow season will shrink in duration, haphazard weather means there’s always a chance occasional cold snaps will create ideal conditions for snowfall.

For Louise Perrin, Mount Buller is always going to have enough charm to attract admirers locally and from afar.

“Mother Nature has provided for this industry and for businesses to survive, but we might get to a point where that’s not the case anymore,” she said.

“It’s going to be different but different shouldn’t mean a death sentence.”

ABOM adapts and advances for an action-packed winter THE ABOM restaurant, bar and hotel at Mt Buller has a rich and colourful history dating back to the 60s.
