SCV announces Whitt apartments development THE Ski Club of Victoria (SCV) has announced plans to undertake a development of 12 apartments, to be known as “The Whitt Apartments”, adjacent to the Ivor Whittaker Memorial Lodge in Summit Road, Mt Buller.

IF you thought that the number of visitors ocking to Buller and Stirling had started to slow down, then think again.

Figures released for the weekend August 10 (week 10 of the snow season) showed an increase of some 17 per cent over that time compared to the same week last year.

Some 32,579 visitors reached Buller while a further 1242 (up 119 per cent) played on Stirling.

Year to date figures for Stirling are up by 15 per cent overall but for Buller it is two per cent compared to last year’s ďŹ gures.

LONG LINES: With the massive increase in visitor numbers to both Mt Buller and Mt Stirling this year, traffic queues have been long with keen skiers waiting for some time to get to the gates of the resorts – traffic management on these days is to be looked at by management.

Visitor day numbers for Buller for the week were 47,315 up by only two per cent or 14,736 staying more than one day, while Stirling had an additional 411 staying more than one day (up by 83

per cent compared to 2013).

It appears that the majority of visitors to both resorts are day visitors which has also been reected in the number of cars passing through the gate – particularly over the

weekends - with some days recording as many as 2400 in one day.

With that many cars all trying to get onto the mountains, is it any wonder that some motorists have experienced delays and long queues in getting to the gates.

But one solution may be is to take advantage of Buller’s ‘early bird’ rates and arrive between 7am and 8am to gain half price resort entry.

There is still a good six weeks till the end of the season and with such good snowfalls this year spring is set to be ‘the time’ to hit the slopes.

Dan has coached several Mt Buller cross country skiers to national level.

“We are honored to have someone of Dan’s calibre as our leader,” said Sonia.

“Dan’s fitness and skiing style are legendary on the mountain, and he is admired by adults and children alike.”

The group is also planning to hold an inaugural “Buller Nordic” fun race.

“Dan has donated an antique nordic ski for an annual Encouragement Award, which will be engraved with the name of the winner each year and displayed at The Whitt,” Sonia said.

“The group will also be encouraging the mountain to support the sport by grooming cross country trails and creating maps and signage.

“The idea is still taking shape but Buller Nordic is open to all and we are keen to hear from any interested parties.”

The first ski and get together is planned for this weekend, August 23 and 24.

Details will be posted on Facebook/Mount Buller Cross Country Ski. All standards – including beginners - and ages will be most welcome, you just need some cross country skis.

CROSS country skiing at Mt Buller is set to take off with the establishment of a new group, Buller Nordic.

The new group will promote the sport and bring likeminded people together to share in their enjoyment of cross country skiing.

Buller Nordic founder, Sonia Kent, said the formation of the group was a direct response to rising enthusiasm for cross country skiing at Mt Buller.

“There has been a small but avid group of cross country skiers at Buller for years,” Sonia said.

“But more recently the numbers have grown significantly, with people of all ages taking to the trails for fun and fitness.

“Cross country is a fantastic sport that promotes all round fitness and provides a pleasant change from downhill skiing.

“Often when the weather is bad on the hill you can go for a cross country ski and be quite sheltered lower down, such as on the Chamois track.

“Several well-known instructors are often seen after skiing getting some exercise on their nordics,” Sonia said.

“Cross country skiing is also very accessible, with skiers of all ages and levels able to participate.

“Kids have really taken to it in recent years, especially at Mt Buller as part of the inter-

Village Square Plaza official opening MT Buller Village Square Plaza was officially opened by the Minister for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith recently.

The Village Square Plaza facility (formerly Cow Camp Plaza) was given a complete renovation and refurbishment prior to this year’s snow season.

It has a new lift-accessible mezzanine level providing double the seating and dining capacity, better access to public amenities and rental, retail and food and beverage outlets, as well as a new orientation for improved flow into the Village Square.

Visitors to the resort can also enjoy a fresh new look and feel, with plenty more space to relax, wait for friends or enjoy a ski break.

Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management chief executive officer, John Huber, said the Village Square Plaza refurbishment helps to enhance the visitor experience while improving the resort for the future.

“The Village Square Plaza build-

ing is an important hub for visitors to the resort, and will now assist to create better access and amenity for visitors and residents alike, while providing improved flow through the arrival point through to the Village Square and key resort touchpoints,” Mr Huber said.

“The Village Square Plaza project is an important step in Mt Buller’s Resort Master Plan, and follows on from completed developments including the reception and interpretive centre at Alpine Central, Athletes’ Walk and Black Forest Walk.

OLYMPIC snowboarder and beyondblue ambassador Belle Brockhoff raised awareness of depression and anxiety at her home mountain on August 9.

The Blue Bullet chairlift became the beyondblue chairlift for the day with Belle being on hand to greet visitors and even taking some boarding lessons.

The beyondblue marquee was set up at the base of the chairlift offering free beyondblue resources and stickers and the chance to meet Winter Olympian Belle.

Belle was also available for autographs and photos and then ran ski and boarding sessions from 2pm to 3pm for 10 competition winners.

Visitors to the marquee were given the chance to enter a competition to win one of the private ski lessons on the day with Belle.

Belle became a beyondblue ambassador earlier this year, sharing her story of depression and anxiety in the hope of inspiring others to speak up and seek support when they are struggling.

In a show of support, Buller Ski Lifts renamed SUPPORTIVE ROLE: Winter Olympian Belle Brockhoff has become beyondblue’s ambassador and takes her supportive role to the snowfields in the fight against their iconic Blue Bullet Chairlift the ‘beyondblue depression.

MT Buller will shred in a school dress for girls in Sierra Leone One Girl is excited to launch its fourth annual Do It In A Dress campaign.

“We’re calling on all Aussies to complete challenges in a school dress to raise funds and awareness to educate girls in Sierra Leone, West Africa,” Mt Buller organiser Chris Brunskill said.

On Tuesday, September 9, Mt Buller will shred in a school dress.

Do It In A Dress is all about having fun while making a difference.

Skiers and snowboarders’ mission is to raise $9900, enough to send 33 girls to school for an entire year.

These raised funds will

give women and girls in Sierra Leone access to education through scholarships, school rehabilitation projects and business training.

“Quite simply, I want a better world,” Chris said.

“I’m wearing a school dress for the 60 million girls around the world who aren’t in school.

“Educating a girl has a ‘multiplier effect’.

“When you educate a girl you educate a family, a community, a district and a nation.

“I believe, education is the only true way to break that poverty cycle and bring a positive change to this planet.

“As Nelson Mandela famously said ‘education is the most powerful weapon

you can use to change the world’.

“So through ‘Shred It In A Dress’ I want to have fun, start important conversations about girls’ education, and make a difference all while rocking in a school dress.

“Let’s do this.”

Throughout the day the Mt Buller community aims to have 50+ people skiing and snowboarding in school dresses down the mountain.

Chris will be on the slopes and at the board park throughout the day and will end up with a night at The Whitt for Paddy’s Night and then at the Kooroora - all in a dress.

Last year Mt Buller raised $4500 allowing 13 girls to go to school for a full 12 months.

Epic bike trail status gives Buller bike ‘cred’

MT Buller’s Epic Mountain Bike Trail has been declared officially as the only International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) accredited outside of North America.

Australia’s only IMBA accredited trail follows an endorsed Ride Centre status in 2012 for Mt Buller, received as a result of the resort’s staged trail development plan which has seen it become a premier mountain bike destination.

This latest endorsement means the trail has been recognised as world-class, and one that offers an iconic, diverse and high-quality backcountry ride experience.

The trail, will be officially named ‘Australian Alpine Epic’ at an official opening on December 6 at Mt Buller with a weekend event planned to mark the occasion along with the opening of the trail network for the summer season.

Epic is a 40km long-distance, cross-country descending trail that will take in some of the most spectacular terrain and scenery in the Australian Alps.

Starting at Mt Buller, the trail takes riders through the Mt Buller and Mt Stirling resorts (managed by the Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management), Mansfield State Forest (managed by the Department of Sustainability and Environment), and the Mt Russell

The project has been a partnership between the Australian Alps National Landscape Committee, Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management and the Australian Government through the T-QUAL Strategic Tourism Investment Grants program, and has received state and federal funding to the tune of $500,000.

Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management marketing director, Amber Gardner, said the announcement is another huge step for mountain biking at Mt Buller.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to receive the nod from IMBA for the Australian Alpine Epic,” Ms Gardner said.

“The trail has been the result

of years of planning across a number of organisations and government, and to have this stamp of approval by IMBA is just fantastic.

“IMBA received a record number of applications for endorsements this year, so for our trail to rise to the top speaks volumes about the quality of trail and its surrounds.

“This trail is truly spectacular, and takes in some of the most incredible scenery in the High Country that hasn’t been accessible by bike until now.

“We can’t wait to open it to everyone in December.”

World Trail’s Glen Jacobs, whose company has been responsible for the design and build of the Australian Alpine Epic, was also

thrilled with the announcement.

“This is such great news for Mt Buller and for World Trail as well,” Mr Jacobs said.

“The team is so proud of the trail, and it really is some of the best we’ve ever built.

“This trail is the one we’ve been waiting for – in all the years we’ve been building at Buller we’ve looked at that area and said ‘we’ll build a trail through there one day’ and here it is.

“The team was so pumped while we were working on it last summer, we just knew it was something special and when we got to ride it we were blown away, it is truly amazing and I’ve never ridden anything like it.

“We cannot wait for people to get up there and ride it.”

More water for snowmaking and drinking on Buller

By PAM ZIERKMAHONEY MT BULLER Mt Stirling Resort Management is set to build a new dam, increasing the capacity for more man-made snow and supplying potable water to residents and visitors.

The proposed $8.25 million dam, which will be able to hold 100 million litres of water, is currently with the Victorian Government Department of Transport, Planning and Local Infrastructure for planning permit approval.

RMB chief executive officer John Huber earlier this year announced the dam was a priority infrastructure project for the resort.

Mr Huber said that if approved the project would be undertaken in a manner that minimised the impact on the environment.

“The dam is described as the most appropriate option for meeting the resort’s peak drinking water and snowmaking water demands,” Mr Huber said.

It is considered the best of nine options that were reviewed, such as the use of groundwater, pumping from the Howqua or Delatite rivers, and the use of collected stormwater.

The preferred site

would be about 800 metres from the western edge of the Mount Buller village, at an elevation of about 1700 metres.

Documentation submitted to the government department for approval has the proposed dam and its associated infrastructure built in the resort’s 2015-16 summer works program, between October, 2015 and May, 2016.

Mr Huber said Mount Buller had ‘significant constraints’ on its water supply.

He said as the resort is located on the top of a mountain, it meant that there was limited catchment from nearby to catch and store water.

“In completing the water storage project we want to ensure a secure and sustainable water supply for both snowmaking and potable supply for the resort,” Mr Huber said.

“And in doing that, it is about protecting the economic viability of the resort, and its significant contribution to the regional economy.”

The planning permit approval process includes referral to a range of agencies which will need to provide approval before the project commences.

Connecting road is nothing to be feared SINCE the announcement

by Minister for the Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith for the construction of a new connecting road between Mt Buller and Mt Stirling was made, other suggestions have come to light.

Former RMB board member Don Cummins wrote to the Mansfield Courier on this topic.

Mr Cummins writes: THE recent article on the funding for the Stirling - Buller road and some of the critical comment from the VNPA may have given the impression that this is a new and dangerous idea.

As long ago as 1982 when my partners and I started Mount Stirling Ski Hire, Hugh Brown, the forestry controller, was keen on the idea and pushed through a rough track.

In 1986 the road to Buller was closed by a roadslip and for 10 days we did very good business as the only way snow skiers could get to the snow.

It became evident to all that Buller needed a second entrance and exit road.

Then in the fire seasons of 2006-07 as deputy chairman of Mt Buller Resort board I

chaired a number of meetings where some rightfully frightened locals plotted their nonescape route.

Previously I had worked from my position on the Mt Stirling board to amalgamate Buller and Stirling as it was very evident that Stirling would never be able to afford even the simplest of upgrades as it had such a small commercial base.

We couldn’t even afford a new track roller those days and as soon as we joined Buller the car park was sealed and services improved dramatically.

After this amalgamation I had been put onto the Buller board to represent local shire interests and I began planning and pushing two programs amalgamate Mt Buller into the shire, and build a road between Stirling and Buller.

I never could convince the Melbourne based board members that our shire could run Buller a lot cheaper than the board.

Not because the figures were wrong but because there was an arrogance among the Buller set that “a little country shire couldn’t handle the complexity of Buller”.

They almost seemed to enjoy the status of paying 30 per cent more for services than they had to.

However, we had more success with the road from Buller to Stirling which would complete a tourist loop rather than having to make a choice at Mirimbah for one or the other.

We knew that 30,000 people visited Stirling over summer and many of these would continue to Buller if it was convenient.

We had many planning discussions with local and state tourist experts who pointed out that loops work to gather tourists.

Apart from all the safety aspects mentioned above, many operators on Buller were trying to get summer use of Buller facilities going.

The late resort manager, Sandy Jeffcoat, the Grollo family, and Judy Dixon, fellow director on the board, all understood and helped push this concept of trying to normalise Buller into the local structure so that a drive up there in summer would be as common as a drive to Jamieson or Tolmie.

The business case which

I took to a meeting with the Victorian Treasurer around 2007 was sound enough to win $200,000 from them and we then went after a similar amount from the Federal Government with the board rounding out this to $500,000 which was enough at that time to make a start.

We trekked and planned and scoped out the route and argued at length with DSE about every disturbed blade of grass.

DSE bureaucratic process so slowed the project that it slipped out of my time on the board.

And now it’s back on the agenda as it should be for safety, business security and economic use of the businesses on Buller.

A link road does not mean that we will see a sudden rise in development on Stirling.

The development is on Buller already.

What we will see is the greater summer visitation of the Buller-Stirling circuit and consequent tourist/employment spin-off for our shire as Buller keeps open more summer businesses.

It is not a project to be fearful of.

Vanni brings the flavors of Italy to Buller

IT doesn’t get much more authentic Italian than Giovanni Cologni.

Migrating to Australia only 10 years ago, Vanni – as he is known – has only recently mastered the English language.

There is no doubt then that the Italian cuisine he serves out of his restaurant Desiderio Italiano, at the Alpine Retreat, on Mt Buller is as genuine as it gets.

“I bring the flavors all the way from Italy,” Vanni said.

Vanni is from Lombardy, near Milan, and though it is an area known for its skiing resorts, this young chef feels more at home in the kitchen than on the slopes.

“I’m not a big skier,” he said.

“Since being at Buller I have tried it once – I fell down a lot but I didn’t break any bones, and that’s what matters.”

Coming to Australia in 2003 was the realisation of a dream for Vanni, who declared “Australia has always felt like home to me, even when I wasn’t there”.

Working at The Black Salt Restaurant in Geelong, Vanni is also in charge of the Anglesea Bowling Club kitchen when he is not on the skifields.

“This is my first year at Buller, but I like it here - I’ll be coming back that’s for sure,” he said.

Recently entering four products at the Hobart Fine Foods Show, the company took out three gold medals and one bronze.

“This is a fantastic result, we are obviously very happy,” Michele said.

“It makes people stand up and take notice that your product is a quality one.”

Stephen’s Fine Foods started off life as a café, operating out of the current Café 41 premises.

By 1989, the puddings had become so popular the couple decided to focus solely on manufacturing.

“Since then we have been creating Christmas traditions and bringing families together for

nearly 30 years,” Michele said.

“Our products have become an essential feature on many a festive menu – at Stephen’s Fine Foods we are committed to providing our customers with high quality produce.”

Taking out first place in the pudding roll category, Stephen’s Fine Foods also won gold for their Brandy Butterscotch Sauce and their Plum Sauce, while the traditional pudding took out bronze.

“We use the best quality ingredients and traditional recipes – that’s why they taste so good,” Michele said.

Stephen and Michele, when not making puddings at their Mansfield based factory and outlet, are managing Ajax Ski Lodge on Mt Buller, warming the hearts and tummies of skiers with their fine menus - extending beyond the Christmas fare.

Ski boots - your most important piece of skiing equipment

THIS edition I want to talk about boot fitting and how having the correct boot can affect the enjoyment of your skiing.

As a general guide, when you’re standing upright in a correctly fitted boot, your toes should just be touching the end of your liner, and as you flex forward into a skiing position, your toes should pull back from the front.

They should not be bone crushingly tight but still feel like a firm hand shake with even pressure throughout.

When renting or buying boots you need to spend time to make sure you’re in the correct size and shape.

Rushing invariably ends in disaster.

Boots that are extremely comfortable from the start are invariably way too big.

Boots only get bigger with wear.

Many people who rent find themselves trying to control skis with boots that are way too big, to the point of slopping around and using one’s toes to try to grip the boot and end up cramping.

It is important to find a shell that closely matches the general shape of your foot.

That’s where a good boot fitter comes in.

It’s his or her job to know the shapes of all the boots

and have the experience to match your foot shape to the shell shape.

Researching online or in magazines will not help you.

There is practically no good information to help one work out what boot will work best.

The best advice I can give is to seek out a store that has a good boot fitting reputation with a large range and offers backup should you need some later adjustment.

Ski boots should last from between 100-200 days but as you progress as a skier you may find you need to upgrade to something stiffer, stronger and smaller to help you ski more effectively.

The more advanced the skier, the more precise the fit needs to be.

The energy transfer through your boots to your skis is what gives you

control of your edges.

The more efficiently you can control your edges with a well-fitting boot, the more performance you can get out of your skis, right up to World Cup level.

Again, the best advice I can give is to seek out a professional boot fitter to help guide you through the process.

I’ve been fitting boots for more than 35 years and have trained many certified master boot fitters over the years as well as having possibly the largest range of boots in Australia.

CELEBRATING season 2014’s mega dumps, the BUMPS ‘WHITE’ party was actually a very colorful event.

A shimmering white mass of humanity, glowing under ultra violet lights slid into the Whitt’s Dump Inn on Saturday, August 16.

The purpose of the event was to raise money for the Mt Buller Volunteer Ski Patrol and the Ski Club of Victoria Youth Sports Development Fund.

KT PARKER and Jessica Haslau are two Mt Buller names that will no doubt show up regularly during this southern and in the next northern season.

Both started their training with Mt Buller race coach Richard Haslau, and I’ve seen the years of hard work, dedication and sheer determination that are now translating into their fantastic results.

In 2013 KT Parker was, for the fourth year running, crowned Under 16 Australian Alpine Champion.

Now, in 2014 season, KT has achieved her goal of competing in her first FIS races, and what a start.

At the recent Thredbo and Perisher National Championship, skiing hard and fast KT became the National Junior GS and SL Champion.

In this year’s challenging Tom Mathias Memorial Slalom FIS event, held on a very challenging course and attracting a field of international and Australian National Team competitors, Jess, a member of Mt Buller Race Club, placed second on day one and third in slalom day two behind international champions.

Both Jess and KT competed in the recently held Suzuki National Alpine Championships and National Junior Championships, which attracted 72 competitors from around the world and National Team athletes.

In the Giant Slalom at Thredbo and Slalom at Perisher, Jess was runner up to Olympian Lavinia Chrystal with KT placing third.

Take note now of these two rising Mt Buller stars as their names will start to become as familiar as Belle Brockhoff, Emily Bamford and our famous Mt Buller boys, Chumpy Pullin and Anton Grimus.

Chumpy and Belle take gold at Hotham MT Buller’s Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin and Belle Brockhoff have scooped the pool at Mt Hotham’s Snowboard Cross competition.

Over two days of Snowboard Cross competition, with more than 60 competitors from 10 countries including Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Estonia competing, Australian Olympians Chumpy Pullin and Belle Brockhoff took out gold.

Following them were fellow Aussies Cam Bolton and Matt Thomas in the men’s race at 2nd and 3rd, with Japan’s Watanabe Daisuke in 4th.

Fellow Japanese competitor Karen Iwadare from Tokyo placed 2nd in the women’s division and Cassandra Fortune, hailing from Mollymook, NSW took out the bronze.

Mollie Fernandez, also a Mt Buller competitor came in 4th.

O l y m p i a n a n d Wo r l d Champion Halfpipe ride and Sochi Olympic competitor Holly Crawford from Sydney (home mountain Perisher) came in 5th.

The successful event followed two days of the SSA Futures Talent Identification program for young athletes in snowboard cross.

More than 45 hopefuls attended to learn from Australia’s top snowboard athletes.

Visitors love knowing that their favorite instructors and race coaches are there for them from season to season.

One of Mt Buller Ski School’s most sought after staff members is Daniel Watts who has worked at Buller on and off for the past 25 years.

Daniel’s love affair with snowsports started when he was 10 and his dad moved the family to the USA for work.

It was at Dodge Ridge California that Daniel started his skiing career.

His first ski at Mt Buller was in 1983 when Orange and Blue Lifts were still operating and then during university years, Mt Hotham was his mountain of choice.

In 1989, he decided to defer studies to take up a position as an instructor at Mt Buller Ski School under the directorship of Paul Romano and he stayed there full time, with off seasons in California where he completed his US Level 3 full instructor certification, Level 1 race coaching and telemark instructor qualifications.

1993 was devoted to racing in the USA. Daniel won almost all the 20-29 age group races in slalom, grand slalom and one super G race.

In 1996 Daniel became an entrepreneur.

With Ivan Pacak, they set up an extreme wintersports centre located in the old log cabin at

They taught cross country and telemark skiing, snowshoeing and ice climbing, and Daniel obtained his Australian Level 3 race coaching qualification.

In 2000, Daniel returned to university studies in Australia but made sure he still got time on the snow in the US during his Aussie summers.

He even became co-director of Sierra Summit Ski School (near Mammoth Mountain, California).

Now a fully qualified forensic accountant dealing with bribery, corruption and fraud,

Daniel’s love of snowsports sees him at Mt Buller on most weekends.

He is one of Mt Buller Ski School’s leading race coaches as well as general instructor and his patience as an instructor/coach is legendary.

Long-time Mt Buller skier Jane Brearley, who is currently enrolled in a Masters Clinic Program organised by the Ski Club of Victoria, commented “I was so happy to see that Daniel would be coaching a Masters Clinic this season”.

“Twelve years ago I did a Masters season every Saturday and loved his patience and the

individual attention he gave to everyone in the class,” Jane said.

“My overall skiing ability improved and while I’m not racing as much these days, his tips on improving skiing technique make me feel more confident on the slopes, and the lessons are always fun.”

Major changes are about to take place in Daniel’s private life when in October he will marry Julia – a snowboarder.

THE programs offered by Mt Buller Education (MBE) have operated successfully on Mt Buller since 1995. Over that period, the operators have worked closely with a large number of schools and on-snow training organisations (such as Mt Buller Race Club and Team Buller Riders).

Students from Year 3 to 10 are able to enjoy a term of quality family time as well as following aspirations to higher levels of achievement at State, National or International competition.

This year, eight former students of the Program were part of Australia’s team in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Bumper snow falls this season have had phones running hot on Mt Buller, but often eager visitors are turned away because theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not sure whether itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s worth making the long trip to stay a couple of days, trying something totally new.

Mt Buller is in the business of providing a snow experience for everyone.

Almost 10 years ago, the idea of taking snow to the streets of Melbourne was born and every year since, several Melbourne suburbs have eagerly awaited their annual snowfall.

This year, on the last two Saturdays in July, tonnes of Mt Buller snow was loaded onto huge trucks and dumped in Springvale Mall (20 tonnes) and High Street, Ashburton (10 tonnes).

Thousands attended both dumps and kids and adults alike found it hard to believe that a real snowďŹ eld had appeared in their suburban shopping centre, providing the opportunity for kids

to build a snowman or try out a toboggan ride.

Marketing manager for Grollo Leisure Tourism Jacquie Whitby oversaw the very ďŹ rst dump and was back this year to check whether it is still relevant.

She firmly believes that taking snow to Melbourne has helped grow Mt Bullerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s winter tourism over the years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are so many people who believe that a trip to the snow is just too hard to organise, but once families experience snow ďŹ rst hand in their local neighborhood, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re captivated,â&#x20AC;?

IT was Christmas in the snow on Mt Buller recently when all things Christmassy were celebrated.

Even Channel 7’s weather crossovers got into the spirit of a Christmas in the snow with two mornings televising

weather forecasts - with a cast of about 100 each morning.

But celebrations included Father Christmas browsing around the resort, the Light Up The Night Bourke Street skiing and

dinners galore all over the mountain at various restaurants including Pension Grimus.

Chamber of Commerce award to Will Phipps

STARTING OUT: Mansfield Rudolf Steiner School students started their ski lessons this year on Mt Stirling with experienced ski instructors. Preps started their winter sports on Mondays, followed by grades 1 to 4 on Tuesdays and then the rest of the school later in the week. The grades 5 to 8 then progressed on to downhill skiing on Buller for the last two days of skiing. Snow play had children getting used to the cold, wet stuff and after their first week they progressed to skis and the trails.

Buller Ski Lifts’ long serving employees recognised BULLER Ski Lifts last week recognised another set of dedicated employees - some marking as many as 35 years’ experience with the company.

BSL general manager, Laurie Blampied, presented the five longest serving awards prior to a BSL team dinner (staff night) at the ABOM which was Japanese themed to celebrate the mountain’s partnership with sister resort Madarao.

The presentations were a small cocktail event with approximately 30 people attending the event (20 recipients and 10 managers) along

with human resources.

Five and 10 years of service recipients were recognised at the dinner held following the cocktail event.

Sadakazu Haruno received an award for 15 years with BSL’s ski and snowboard school; Sue Howie, corporate services/payroll - 25 years; Edward Mahon, ski patrol 30 years; Nick Reeves - lift operations - 30 years; and Mark Woodsford - ski and snowboard school - 35 years.

Laurie said these annual awards celebrated team members with five years of service and up - in five year increments.

Mark Woodsford, ski and snowboard school, was recognised for 35 years with the company.

Sue Howie, corporate services/payroll, was recognised for 25 years’ service.

Will started his schooling and skiing experience while at St Mary’s Primary School hitting the slopes skiing just six years ago as part of the local schools program.

He now competes for Mansfield Secondary College at the interschools.

TWO great internationally acclaimed artists are heading to Buller this next week.

Pete Murray and Ash Grunwald will both be appearing at the Kooroora - after dark.

Pete Murray - it’s an unlikely story… a rising Rugby football star gets so badly injured that he has to leave his sport behind.

But that is exactly what Pete Murray did – after football he picked up an acoustic guitar, taught himself how to play it and recorded an indie CD that he sold after shows from the back of his Kombi Van. His debut album, the roots/rock infused ‘Feeler’ (2003), snowballed through oldfashioned word of mouth and sell out shows until a year later he became Australia’s most popular singer/songwriter.

‘Feeler’ went on to sell six by platinum in Australia (450,000 copies) and earned 12 ARIA Award nominations.

Wednesday, August 27 is Ash Grunwald.

Ash Grunwald put together his first album, Introducing, leaning heavily on traditional blues but it was his second album I Don’t Believe released in April of 2004, that would change his state of play.

It was his first album - of many to come - to graft technology onto the deeply rooted foliage of the Delta swamp.

On the back of his increasingly explosive and unique shows, he released a searing live album Live At The Corner.

“When I play live, it has that four on the floor, modern pulse that we get from electronic dance music,” he said.

His next studio album in 2007, Give Signs, was even more adventurous, and he took his energetic live show to venues such as London’s renowned The Borderline and Shepherds Bush Empire, and opened for acts as diverse as James Brown, Bo Diddley, Keith Urban, Jack Johnson, Missy Higgins and Pete Murray.

More water for snowmaking and drinking on Buller

By PAM ZIERK-MAHONEY MT BULLER Mt Stirling Resort Management is set to build a new dam, increasing the capacity for more manmade snow and supplying potable water to residents and visitors.

The proposed $8.25 million dam, which will be able to hold 100 million litres of water, is currently with the Victorian Government Department of Transport, Planning and Local Infrastructure for planning permit approval.

RMB chief executive officer John Huber earlier this year announced the dam was a priority infrastructure project for the resort.

Mr Huber said that if approved the project would be undertaken in a manner that minimised the impact on the environment.

“The dam is described as the most appropriate option for meeting the resort’s peak drinking water and snowmaking water demands,” Mr Huber said.

It is considered the best of nine options that were reviewed, such as the use of groundwater, pumping from the Howqua or Delatite rivers, and the use of collected stormwater.

The preferred site would be about 800 metres from the western edge of the Mount Buller village, at an elevation of about 1700 metres.

Documentation submitted to the government department for approval has the proposed dam and its associated infrastructure built in the resort’s 2015-16 summer works program, between October, 2015 and May, 2016.

Mr Huber said Mount Buller had ‘significant constraints’ on its water supply.

He said as the resort is located on the top of a mountain, it meant that there was limited catchment from nearby to catch and store water.

“In completing the water storage project we want to ensure a secure and sustainable water supply for both snowmaking and potable supply for the resort,” Mr Huber said.

“And in doing that, it is about protecting the economic viability of the resort, and its significant contribution to the regional economy.”

The planning permit approval process includes referral to a range of agencies which will need to provide approval before the project commences.

HAVING FUN: Disabled winter sports kids last year had loads of fun competing in their events at the Interschools.

2014 Victorian Interschools Multiclass competition held

By LIZ WEBB SNOWSPORTS are a great equaliser and over the years the Interschools competition has ensured that as many students as possible are given the opportunity to take part in competitive fun on the snow.

In 2013, Victorian Interschools introduced a Multiclass Event, giving school aged students with special needs the opportunity to compete in their own event as part of the Victorian Interschools.

Five schools competed and the excitement and inspiration generated by this ‘first’ has encouraged students from a further three schools to compete in the 2014 Interschools.

Some 26 competitors from Rossbourne, Bulleen Heights School, Ashwood, Belvoir, Berendale, Brighton Secondary, Currajong and MGGS will take to the slopes, competing in Alpine and

Eight guides from Disabled Wintersports Australia will hold 4 x 2 hour snow skills sessions.

Dual Paralympian medallist, Jessica Gallagher, will speak to the kids about competing in the Paralympics and the pathways open to them if they wish to compete after school.

To finish off the fun, the awards presentation on Wednesday evening will be eagerly anticipated by all competitors.

More than 90 parents, friends and officials including patron of Disabled Wintersport Australia, Qantas Captain Richard de Crespigny, will cheer on the young achievers.

Mr de Crespigny is well known as the pilot who safely landed his passenger plane on the river in the USA then rescuing all passengers and flight crew.

He is a keen advocate for the disabled wintersports.

Mush, mush - call of the wild influences sled dogs for Buller

By RHYLL McCORMACK IT’S minus five degrees, the stars are still out, the air is crisp with frost and the blanket of night is wrapped around Brett Hadden and his sled dog team.

Although it may sound like the set of a rescue movie, it is actually pretty standard competition conditions for those involved in the Australian sport of husky racing.

“Any competition is run to strict temperature conditions, which means it’s often run at night or very early in the morning – if it hits 15 degrees the race is cancelled, it’s too warm for the dogs.”

Brett is the principal “musher” at Australian Sled Dog Tours, operating out of Mt Buller, Dinner Plain and Mt Hotham.

It is an association that stretches back 25 years, when a young man was inspired by a story about a courageous sled dog.

“I first had huskies as pets 25 years ago after I read the Jack London book ‘Call of the Wild’,” he said.

“I was really inspired by it.”

ily are living a sled dogger’s dream, with 22 dogs, a variety of sleds and a livelihood that allows them to indeed combine business with pleasure.

“You have to love this way of life with the dogs,” Brett said.

“There’s so much freedom, adventure, and a real connection with the animals.”

Based near Bright, this is the first winter Brett and his team have worked out of Mt Buller, with the established trails and record snow falls proving a hit not only with resort guests, but

also with the 14 dogs Brett has stabled there.

“The dogs are having a great time,” he said.

“They are bred to run, it’s what they do.”

Travelling at between 25– 35km an hour, Brett and his team can pull half a tonne through the snow.

Though the dogs work like professionals, there is a surprising amount of training that goes into producing a good team dog.

“We have a great team of dogs, and they are mostly ones

we have rescued – we re-train them as sled dogs,” Brett said.

“It takes a lot to re-train them, but we like to do it that way and give them a home and a purpose.

“They all come with problems but we work through them.”

Receiving some from as young as eight weeks, others as old as five years, Brett has only ever been unsuccessful with one re-training.

“You can’t make them - they either love it or they don’t.”

“I’ve seen one rescue dog watch the others and he really started picking it up in about two hours – but that was incredible.

“Normally it takes six to eight months to get them ready.

Off season, the dogs spend hours in training, pulling mountain bikes, specially adapted scooters and even a four wheeled cart.

“They are athletes – that’s the only way to look at it.”

Brett is also a keen competitor, and with only a small number of competitions he

It was his competition sledding that led him to create Australian Sled Dog Tours almost 10 years ago.

“I was at a racing competition, and was having a break between events when an American woman came out and asked if I would take her little boy for a ride,” he said.

“It just went from there.”

Going from strength to strength, Brett’s passion is evident – taking time to explain the history, tradition and future of sledding to each tour.

“I want to promote the sport and the dogs as much as possible – we want to see it grow and for people to get involved.”

With more than 500 people taking a tour with Brett and his dogs last winter, the Hadden team is undoubtedly gearing up for another great season.

That, though, is immaterial to this Siberian Husky advocate.

“It’s just doing what I love, and showing people what we have to offer.”

‘Early bird’ targets speedsters

By PAM ZIERK-MAHONEY OPERATION Early Bird detected almost 100 speeding motorists over a two day operation with Victoria Police Mansfield Highway Patrol officers targeting the heavy snow traffic to and from Mt Buller.

Based at Merrijig, Early Bird started at 6am on both Saturday and Sunday and was run in conjunction with Victoria Police Air Wing concentrating on speed detection.

Sergeant Marty McLachlan said the highest speed detected was 150kph which resulted in an immediate vehicle impoundment.

“The driver will also be issued with a speed dangerous infringement notice,” Sgt McLachlan said.

Over the two day period 93 motorists were detected speeding - all received infringement notices.

Several other offences including unlicensed, unregistered cars and driving with excessive snow on vehicles also received infringement notices.

“There was only one minor collision over the two days and that occurred on Mt Buller Road on the Sunday evening,” Sgt McLachlan said.

“Overall the traffic flow was pretty favorable.”

Outcomes for Saturday, August 2 included: Speeding offences: in 50kph zone: between 50 and 69 (9 offences); between 70 and 80 (3); in 80kph zone: between 80 and 99 (20); between 100 and 119 (7); and over 120 (1); in 100kph zone: between 100 and 119 (2); between 120 and 139 (6); over 140(1).

SKIERS and snowboarders enjoying this year’s bumper ski season have been urged to take care on the slopes.

Ambulance Victoria paramedics have treated and transported 329 people from Mt Buller, Mt Hotham, Mt Buffalo and Falls Creek between June 1 and July 31 this year.

Paramedics treated and transported 290 people from the same mountains between June 1 and July 31 last year.

Cases paramedics have attended include: a teenage boy who fractured his ankle while tobogganing when he crashed into a tree; a young girl who suffered facial injuries while tobogganing when another toboggan struck her; a man who suffered a fractured leg when he did a ‘helicopter jump’ while skiing; a woman who got off a bus with her ski boots partially undone - she slipped, twisted her ankle, and, when she fell, cut her gum on the skis or ski poles; a young girl who skied into a tree, suffering head injuries;

a man who was intoxicated, fell over in the snow and broke his leg; and a man who was hit by a toboggan while taking photos at the bottom of a run.

The bulk of people treated have been transported by road ambulance (317), while 12 people have been air lifted from mountains.

Mt Buller’s intensive care paramedic Brett Cooper said paramedics were treating dislocations and fractures as well as head strikes from falls.

“This year because of the increase in snow and ice around the village we have seen an increase in people falling just while walking and making their way around the village, resulting in fractures,” Brett said.

“We are encouraging people to just check where they are walking, and make sure their footwear is appropriate and, where possible, wear boot chains.”

Brett said preparations for the snow started at home.

“It is very important for skiers and snowboarders to have Ambulance Victoria cover as not everyone would expect

that when they come to the mountain they will have an accident, but many do and their trip off the mountain is very expensive,” Brett said.

“You also need to make sure that if you are relying on private health cover that it will cover you for air ambulance and subsequent transfers by ambulance.

“The best answer is to have Ambulance Victoria membership.”

An air ambulance transfer costs almost $10,000 if you are not an Ambulance Victoria member.

Brett also encouraged skiers and snowboarders to: carry tyre chains; allow for increased travel times; share the driving; have a fully-charged mobile phone; and wear appropriate clothing, including helmets and, for snowboarders, wrist guards.

Ambulance Victoria membership is $41.30 for singles per year and $82.60 for families per year.

August 31 – September 7 THE 2014 Australian University Sport Snowsports Championships date back to 1967 and a long standing relationship with Mt Buller.

Mt Buller will again partner with Australian University Sport to host the biggest snow event on the university calendar, with projections of 350 students set to hit the mountain.

Several Australian team members from Sochi and previous Winter Olympics will look to return to home soil and defend their titles.

The Snowsports Championships will include a range of events for students to participate in as well as a social program at the best venues on the mountain and exclusive access to Mt Buller slopes.

Koflers is located near the bottom of the Summit lift adjacent to Howqua chairlift and Koflers T-Bar. The leasehold interest is site 205 which is on 777 sqm of land.

It is fully licensed to sell alcoholic beverages with meals.

The restaurant includes adequate accommodation for management and staff on the lower level.

On the upper level the restaurant includes functional kitchen and servery and seating inside for 150.

The outside deck has additional seating for 150.

On the surrounding snow there is seating for approximately 250.

There are approvals in place for an extension to the building to construct additional storage and cool room area so as to minimise the space required at the depot.

LITTLE BULLER SPUR KIOSK is located on the halfway point down Wombat Lift

and provides quick snacks, hot and cold drinks and has outdoor tables and chairs.

The leasehold interest is known as site 338 and is on 217sqm of land.

VILLAGE RESIDENTIAL SITE and depot is located on Summit Road on the Skakey Knees corner.

The total land size is 522sqm and offers panoramic views to three sides.

Regarded as one of the premier positions on the mountain it would make a magnificent home site for one or two houses or an apartment building.
