By PAM ZIERKMAHONEY THE State Government will pump $210,000 into the development of the visitor hub at Telephone Box Junction (TBJ), to be wholly powered year round by renewable energy.

Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Major Projects and Regional Victoria, Danielle Green, visited Mansfield on Monday to announce the funding, noting that TBJ is the pivotal entry point to the high country from the western side

of the Great Dividing Range for visitors seeking to enjoy activities on Mount Stirling.

The TBJ hub project, which has already commenced, includes community shelters and information boards at Howqua Gap and the Machinery Shed, the installation of public toilets at the Machinery Shed, as well as the creation of an all-weather access pathway from King Saddle to Machinery Shed.

and will replace a large, noisy and smelly diesel generator, which is notoriously at odds with the quiet, unspoiled natural environment.

“Power is always a challenge and this hydro scheme will keep Stirling open all year round,” Ms Green said.

Roughly 200,000 AWD and 4WD vehicles pass TBJ on the way to the high country each year, many of which pass through without stopping.

At a small gathering of mountain staff, contractors and Mansfield Shire councillors at the Delatite Hotel on Monday, Ms Green was full of praise for the way in which the Mt Buller and Mt Stirling Alpine Resort Management Board protected the prisitne environment of Mt Stirling.

Snow visitor numbers exceed past records

ing and we do want to develop more parking, but it is the logistics of getting this number of people up to the top of the mountain and back down again that we are dealing with now.

“It is difficult (for more parking) with the topography we have on the mountain,” Mr Huber said.

“There are master plans to develop more parking, not down as far as Mirimbah, but there are plans to focus on parking in the upcoming years.”

It takes on average one hour for a bus to get to the top and back down again when huge numbers arrive late.

“When you have 200 people standing in a queue to get to the top or back down again, you want to clear those numbers as quickly as possible and not be adding to the numbers, so that is why we close the mountain off at times such as these,” Mr Huber said.

A RECORD number of visitors have been recorded over two weekends on Mt Buller.

Alpine Resorts Management Board chief executive officer John Huber said traffic controllers closed access to the mountain around 2pm on each of the extremely busy days so that transporting visitors to the top and back down again at the end of the day could be dealt with.

All statistics seen for the past 10 to 15 years have been surpassed.

“What we are advising people to do is to come early as we have seen quite a lot of late arrivals – as late as 2pm and 3pm and that puts stress on transport and infrastructure,” Mr Huber said.

“But we have some great plans in place to make sure we can accommodate these late arrivals.”

Mr Huber said that some people just want to come up to the top for half an hour or so – just so they can say they have seen and felt snow and they are happy if they get even a short time at the top.

In week five Mt Buller recorded 37,500 visitors – and this record may be broken in weeks six and seven.

Mr Huber said as can be seen by further reports, visitor numbers are sitting 50 per cent above last year and 54 per cent above the 10 year averages.

“Outstanding numbers – a little bit a tweeking still has to be done to determine just how good the numbers fall as the holidays did not coincide with the same weeks in previous years,” he said.

“But we are now comparing numbers from weeks six and seven and we are ahead of trends with those as well.

Bumper numbers close mountain gates

FOR only the second time in the same number of years Mt Buller operations closed the gates to visitors on Saturday due to the higher than expected numbers flocking to the resort.

Group manager – marketing, sales and events, Gilliam Dobson, said “Mt Buller experienced record day visitation, with more than 2200 vehicles and over 40 buses entering the resort.

“An unprecedented number of vehicles arrived after 12pm, which put our day visitor car parking at capacity by around 2.30pm,” Ms Dobson said.

“A good weather forecast coupled with the final weekend of the Victorian school holidays meant lots of families were taking the opportunity to

enjoy a day visit to the snow.

“It certainly was all hands on deck as all available resources were deployed to assist.”

Figures released last week by the ARCC showed in comparison to other years visitor numbers for the week ending July 10 were up by a massive 78 per cent with 37,480 people recorded.

The majority of these visitors were ‘day passes’ as the visitor day numbers were 56,664 for the same week.

In 2015 for the same week only 21,472 visitors reached Buller and in 2014 only slightly higher figures of 26,917 were recorded.

To date the total number of visitors to Buller is 80,340 - almost double that of the previous two years at the same time for week five.

Saturday afternoon July 9 saw the Cattleman’s Rail Jam event take place in the Village Square, where for the first time the qualifying rounds were also held in the Village rather than in the terrain park.

“This gave visitors something extra to check out that they otherwise wouldn’t have seen, and experience some of the country’s top snowboarders take to the famous Cattleman’s staircase,” Ms Dobson said.

The extremely high number of visitors meant mountain parking was at a premium with no spaces left in any of the car parks or along the sides of the road.

Mirimbah Park was full and even cars were parking up to one kilometre below the Mirimbah Store.

was brought in and barricades placed half a kilometre from the gates.

Only overnight parking vehicles were admitted until some car spaces became available, which was not until around 4pm.

As cars were parked all the way down the mountain and filled Mirimbah Park additional shuttle buses were also deployed to get the people to the village and back again.

Bus shuttles ran until after 7pm to clear the day visitor numbers – a fantastic job done by all to cope with such a huge influx of people.

The rail jam event saw more than 300 people stay until late into the evening to view the spectacular board riding of compeititors (See page 8 for Rail Jam results and pictures).

Buller X attracts top skiers FIRST time event - Buller X - has hit Mt Buller with more enthusiasm than first expected.

Event founder and director Tony ‘Harro’ Harrington said 10 elite Aussie skiers have been chosen from a field of about 30 as contenders in Australia’s most exciting new elite ski event – Buller X. A buoyant crowd packed the back bar at the Ski Club of Victoria for the announcement last Friday and every skier was cheered and toasted by the crowd as their names were drawn. “The community here at Buller is really fired up but as we’ve seen from the voting and the support flowing in online, so are people all over the country,� Harro said. “Buller X is all about extreme skiing and most importantly it honours the

seriously rich pool of skilled Aussies who love freeskiing.�

The confirmation of the line up followed an intense 10-day voting window that drew well over 11,000 votes from fans and supporters across the country. “The support and passion Buller X is generating is incredible,� Harro said. “The chutes at Mt Buller where we will hold this competition are as rowdy as it gets for skiers, so when we put this challenge up we were smashed with skiers keen to rise to the occasion.�

The winner will enjoy a first prize suited perfectly for a big mountain skier – a week of heliskiing in British Columbia with Last Frontier Heli Ski who offer ‘the largest single heliski area on the planet’.

There is a weather window for all of August and September for the event and the organisers will monitor snow conditions and weather to find a suitable time to call the event on. “The mountain calls the day,� said Harro. “The event zone is super steep and rocky so we need a couple more good snow storms like we had recently to get the levels of snow cover we need in there.�

Once there is approximately one metre of snow base in the resort and a window of clear and calm conditions the event organisers will give the athletes the ‘amber light’ to get ready and the event will be called on.

IT wasn’t the glittering affair that you might have expected for the opening of a refurbished photo shop and there were no whistles, hooters or even fireworks - but a very happy party all the same.

Tony Harrington - “Harro” to all - officially opened his ‘Photo Shop’ at Mt Buller last week with many good friends and locals joining him to celebrate this new venture.

Harro has taken on the former Fun Photos following the legacy of Mark Woodsford and continues to offer a friendly service to guests in

the resort seeking to capture memories of their stay.

However, Harro is offering more than just resort photos which visitors can purchase - he has some dramatic large art prints - ready to hang – shot at Buller and during his travels all around the world.

He is also stocking the eclectic shopfront with a range of gallery items including ceramics from Wendy Jagger, local coffee from High Grounds Roasting, bespoke jewellery and mountain-inspired gifts.

His partner Rhylla Morgan, who runs media for the lift company, has even found time to create some small art

Harro has other exploits as well as photography, although his photos hint at his other interests.

He has developed and runs extreme ski and film events like the World Heli Challenge and spends half the year away from the mountains - chasing big waves for his film projects.

He makes films and shoots for magazines around the globe, with over 150 front covers to his credit.

The affable photographer is classically low-key about his exploits and talks about trips into the mountains of Greenland and Alaska or massive 40ft waves off Hawaii like most would recount a casual camping trip with friends.

He had plenty of adventures and survived to tell the tales and share the photos.

Harro will share some of the knowledge he has gathered along the way about safety in the mountains with small groups this year in a new program called Mountain Safe.

The four hour sessions offer an introduction to avalanche awareness and share vital skills for keeping safe in the mountains.

Safety when skiing in the higher and out of the way realms can be more dangerous than just taking to the ordinary slopes and Harro is passionate about teaching all those who like to adventure into the backcountry how to do so with some awareness.

By PAM ZIERKMAHONEY RISING snowboarding star, Nick Masjuk, at age 19 has already travelled the world chasing his dream of becoming a world champion in alpine snowboarding.

He is currently training on Buller under the guidance of Mane Blomeier, head coach of Mt Buller Race Club.

Living in Mansfield, Nick travels up the mountain daily to train towards his dream of one day making the world championships.

Hailing from Sydney, he

has come to Mansfield and Mt Buller on his own to pursue what he hopes will become his career.

When not in Australia snowboarding and working he travels overseas and has spent some 10 months over the past two years at Steamboat Springs, Colorado, and other centres training and competing.

Nick has been snowboarding since he was seven years old but it was not until 2013 that he was able to spend his first full season training.

“That’s when I thought this is what I want to do with my life,” he said.

Nick’s idol is alpine snowboarder Vic Wilde – who he describes as ‘amazing’.

“I do all disciplines of snowboarding but my passion is alpine – but when I need to get aggression I do a bit of boarder cross to get me going,” he said.

Last weekend Nick took out the Buller Cup, winning in his age group and then overall.

At the end of this season he is hoping to get back to the USA where he will build on his training, experience and competitions.

“I am still learning a lot and by next year I hope to qualify for the junior worlds – I would love

to represent Australia,” he said.

Nick said he first tasted snowboarding when he and his family holidayed in New Zealand when he was just six years old.

Although his favourite place to snowboard is Thredbo, he has made Mt Buller his home for this winter so he can continue to train and learn under Blomeier.

“Mane (Blomeier) is a top coach and I am learning a lot, and Mane is so helpful,” Nick said.

Nick’s ultimate aim is to compete at the Winter Olympics.

Wilderness rescue equipment upgrades

By PAM ZIERKMAHONEY UPGRADES to the Mansfield Ambulance Station’s wilderness response equipment supply has been made possible through a grant from the Harry and Clare Friday Foundation.

Presenting a certificate of appreciation to the Foundation last Friday, station officer Daryl Glover

“It is an important part of our work and at times we get called to help out in other areas, such as the Grampians, where there are no wilderness trained officers.”

The Friday Foundation grant of $2100 purchased additional items such as ski poles, shovels, portable walkie talkies,

and all weather kits.

“This is important as some of this equipment is above and beyond what Ambulance Victoria is funded to supply,” Mr Glover said.

On hand to see what the grant has purchased were members of the Friday Foundation, Christine and Ewan Friday and Diana Kilford, along with ambulance auxiliary member Judy Kirkham.

Mansfield was one of the leading ambulance stations to introduce wilderness rescue and training for officers in this area.

“Across the North East ambulance officers including Mansfield, Mt Beauty, Corryong, Bright and even

It is anticipated this part of the project will be carried out over the coming spring and summer months.

She said flora, fauna and native vegetation assessments have been completed, as well as a cultural heritage management plan.

Ms Green pointed out that the area attracts horse riders, mountain bikers, dirt bikers, hikers and sightseers outside of the snow season and is fast becoming home to the latest cutting-edge snow sports, such

as splitboarding and fat biking.

The project will allow local businesses to capitalise on these emerging visitor markets and support a year-round increase in visitor activity.

It also uses local suppliers and will create 14 jobs during construction with another 27 jobs expected to be created within the next two to five years of its operation.

Interesting history behind lift system THE lift system here at Mt Buller is certainly the best in the southern hemisphere, and arguably as good as anywhere in the world.

In fact, the very first chair lift ever established by the Doppelmayr company anywhere in the world was our very own Bourke Street chair lift.

We have a unique environment, with low altitude, warmer temperatures and humidity all contributing to above average icing.

Plus wind, rain and fog.

It means we need stronger axels and bearings to carry the extra load.

Mt Buller skiers benefited from the competition created between Orange Lifts and Blue Lifts.

For years, it was a game of chess between them.

Essentially, in 1959 a deal was struck by the Forest Commission when Orange Lifts assumed responsibility for Kofflers Hutte, and in return were allocated terrain ‘above the tree line’, while Blue Lifts owned ‘below the snow line’.

It was cat and mouse…

Orange sneaked down, Blue pushed up.

In 1963 Orange acquired the Tyrol Lodge, a move driven by their desire to block Blue from pushing into the Shakey Knees terrain.

Actually, Shakey was to be called Swanston Street, on the back of Bourke Street being just around the mountain.

And Skyline was to be Little Collins Street.

However, skiers got very upset.

They wanted to get away from Melbourne, not have ski runs named after busy Melbourne streets.

They protested and it all changed.

Boggy Creek T-bar was built in 1967.

The summit area was extremely popular with intermediate and advanced skiers.

Soon large queues became the norm with waiting time up to 60 minutes.

So led by Hans Grimus, Orange soon began looking into a chair that would run from the base of the Boggy Creek area up to the summit.

Identifying the best line for the lift generated heated debate, with a range of opinions voiced loudly.

Some wanted it to run up McLaughlin’s Shoulder, where it would be far more exposed to the elements.

Others wanted it to finish down by the Boggy Creek pumping station.

Such decisions would have impacted in all different ways.

The Grimus Triple Chair was built in 1979 - the first triple chair in Victoria.

It changed the face of skiing at Mt Buller, allowing intermediates to enjoy a nice long run, but still provided advanced skiers with access to some of the most challenging terrain in Australia.

Athlete’s Walk, Mt Buller Village

SAM ‘Reddog’ Neumann edged past 15 of Australia’s best snowboarders on Saturday, July 9, to claim his first Burton Cattleman’s Rail Jam title and a $4000 pay cheque.

The event was held under bright lights, clear skies and in front of one of the biggest crowds ever seen.

Neumann finished ahead of close rival and good friend, four-time Cattleman’s champion Jye Kearney in second place, and Jindabyne local Troy Sturrock in third.

Having podiumed in second place at the 2015 event, Neumann from Byron Bay was certainly hungry for a win, coming out firing from the get-go with an impressive display of high technical spins on and off the rail.

His creativity and use of the entire stair set, including a series of never-been-done tricks, like his 50-50 to backside 360 out from the top close-out rail and switch backside 360 to 50-50 over the gap, landed him top spot on the podium and the winner’s cheque.

“I can’t believe it, this is what I’ve worked hard for all these seasons… I’m so stoked,” Neumann said as he clutched his novelty cheque and speculated about the festivities to come.

As one of the veterans of the Cattleman’s Rail Jam, Kearney’s clinical approach to the event, consistently made tricks and famously casual style solidified his second place spot and $2000 cash.

Third placed Sturrock’s silky smooth style and use of the entire stair-set of tricks landed him a $1000 pay cheque to carry with him back to Jindabyne.

crew member the ‘Birdman’, who nailed a highly technical, never-been-done maneuver on the top close out rail.

Birdman landed a switch frontside lipslide on the closeout, transfer to frontside boardslide on the lower rail, a super high consequence trick which earned him a Traeger Grill valued at $1000.

For the first time, the 2016 Cattleman’s Rail Jam offered the chance for riders to qualify on the actual stair set itself, rather than an on-hill set up.

Two elimination heats took place during the day, resulting in a 15-man final to decide the ultimate champion.

“Running the qualifiers on the actual rail was a natural progression for us to make the event bigger and better, and we were really pleased to give some younger, up and coming riders a chance to hit Australia’s most infamous stair set,” said Paul Colby, Burton Australian marketing and brand manager.

As in years past, the official after party at the Kooroora Hotel did not disappoint with long-time Burton friend and mix up extraordinaire Mucci igniting the Back Bar, providing a fitting finish to one of the biggest parties on the Australian snow calendar.

THE passing of Eric Burt last week will sadden many who remembered him as a consultant engineer with the early lift companies, a great photographer on Mt Buller and a keen skier.

Eric passed away on July 14, aged 95.

He first worked at Dandenong Engineering, where he dealt with ski equipment manufacturer Doppelmeier, later becoming a consultant to the Austrian supplier until his move to Mansfield around 23 years ago.

The link with Doppelmeier was because of his long connection with skiing in Australia, which he only finally relinquished after turning 85.

A keen and enthusiastic community minded person, Eric belonged to many organisations and committees and became secretary of the Mansfield Ratepayers’ Association, which applied pressure to disassociate the shire from the Benalla Shire and succeeded in this goal, becoming the Delatite Shire in October 2002.

He was also involved with Up2Us Landcare, Friends of Venilale, Mansfield Masonic Lodge and Friends of the Library just to name a few.

Always interested in music, Eric helped found Radio 3MBS in Melbourne – the first FM radio station in Victoria.

A passionate photographer, he took photographs at Mt Buller in the 1940s for about 10 years, some of which can still be seen in Mansfield and provide a valuable record of the resort’s early days.

The Arlberg Hotel at Mt Buller has a gallery of these early photographs.

Photography led naturally to an involvement in developing and printing, when he and his wife ran a business in Melbourne carrying this out for chemists until the arrival of color film.

At the same time he undertook photographic work with the Department of Anthropology at the University of Melbourne.

Tennis was also another one of Eric’s strong interests, something he did not relinquish until his 90th birthday.

In Melbourne he formed the Glen Waverley Tennis Club, of which he became a life member.

Technology did not seem to present any difficulties for Eric as he drove his car up until about two years ago (aged 93) and mastered the use of a laptop.

So when interview at 93 he gave this advice “People get the idea they’re old,” he said.

“I’m not old – my ambition is to get to 95 (which he did).

“My advice is to keep physically active and keep your mind active”.

A funeral service was held on Thursday, July 21 for Eric at St John’s Anglican Church, Mansfield.

Snow Sisters support ski patrol SNOW Sisters organisers Suzanne Rumble, Sonia Evans and Sandra Maier turned on another great event on Thursday, July 7 at Kaptans Restaurant, Hotel Pension Grimus.

From humble beginnings eight years ago when six ladies went out to celebrate the end of the school holidays, this year there were close to 100 Snow Sisters having fun and raising money for Mt Buller Volunteer Ski Patrol.

Many generous donations were given from around the mountain.

Major sponsor Christine Parkes from the Giving Brand Company donated more than $6000 of products including luxurious gift bags for every lady attending.

A silent auction and raffle were also held.

FAMILY FUN: On the busiest day of the season so far the Alghamdi family from Saudi Arabia enjoyed their first experience in the snow. The family of five children and four adults were thrilled to be able to toboggan down a small slope near the Magic Forest. Mr Alghamdi is in Australia studying and has his family with him. An estimated 10,000 visitors arrived on Mt Buller for Saturday, July 9 creating traffic delays to the village – but all were sorted with additional bus shuttles from Merimbah to the top.

By PAM ZIERK-MAHONEY WHILE the serious skiers and snowboarders hit the higher slopes of Buller when there is good snow, families tend to stick to the lower areas around the Magic Forest, the toboggan park and the bottom of Bourke Street and ‘play’ for their fun.

On July 9, while the snow was fair on Bourke Street, the mountain saw an unprecedented number of day visitors hit the slopes for some family fun.

Learning snowsports, without snow SKI and Snowboard Australia has partnered with the Australian Sports Commission to bring children all over Australia an opportunity which has never before been offered.

Little Shredders <http:// www.littleshredders.com.au> is a brand new ‘off-snow’ program aimed at teaching children the basics of snowsports without actually visiting the slopes.

Based on the hugely popular Burton Riglet product, Little Shredders provides the opportunity for children to learn the fundamental skills of skiing and snowboarding from the convenience of the school yard or gymnasium, through game based learning.

The program uses modified equipment designed specifically for school children, and is an introductory program that teaches children the fundamental skills and knowledge required to prepare them for an on-snow experience.

“It’s a very exciting program

and we can’t wait to provide every Australian child the opportunity to learn how to ski and snowboard before they actually hit the slopes,” said Nick Frayne, national participation and sport development manager, Ski & Snowboard Australia.

“The Little Shredders program will help develop a child’s overall balance, improve their communication skills and provide them an understanding of snow safety, all while having fun and working in teams.”

The program has children learning the correct snowsports stance, practising weight distribution and understanding how to be a safe rider.

The main outcomes of the off-snow, Little Shredders program are teaching school children of all ages about: Balance; Snow safety knowledge; Bodily and spatial awareness; Basic snowsports stance and skills;

Physical preparedness; Teamwork; and Communication.

“Our school loved being a part of the Little Shredders program,” said Matthew Tomkins of Cairnlea Park Primary School.

“The program is aimed at teaching beginner snowsports and snow safety skills in a fun and engaging format.

“Students were able to display great teamwork and sportsmanship and it is a worthwhile program that engages both students and teachers.”

Skiing and snowboarding are among Australia’s largest and most popular participation sports, attracting more than 1.2 million people to the slopes each year.

Traditionally, Australian children have only been able to learn the basics of skiing and snowboarding at an alpine resort.

The redevelopment would also include 59 units, a restaurant and shops.

The current Kooroora building dates back to the 1950s and sits in the heart of the village.

Before further planning can move ahead approval has to be gained from the Minister for Planning.

Footy-stravaganza for Lincoln and Michael Five AFL matches in five states in 72 hours - 6 flights, 11 taxis and nearly 13,000km IT’S a footy fan’s dream weekend to make it to five live AFL matches across five states all in one round.

Buller Grocer’s manager, Lincoln Wymer and his boss Michael Reddrop did just that when round 17 rolled around last week.

They went on the footy weekend of a lifetime cutting a lap of the country (from one side of Australia to the other and back again - starting in Melbourne) to make it to matches at the Sydney Cricket Ground (NSW), Subiaco (WA), back to Melbourne Cricket Ground (Vic), Adelaide Oval (SA) and then finally at Brisbane before heading back home.

It started last Thursday with the Sydney v Hawthorn match and ended on Sunday with Brisbane v Greater Western Sydney.

Michael calculated their “footy marathon” required six flights, 11 taxis, two chauffeuring sisters, and 12,847km of travel distance (give or take a few kilometres).

“Lincoln has had this idea of

multiple games and states in one round for a few years now and it became a bucket list ‘must do’ for him,” Michael said before the big footy-stravaganza.

He’s just been waiting for the planets and the fixture to align,” explained Michael.

“Earlier this year he sent me a text that simply read “Round 17” - and we’ve been deep in planning ever since.”

The pair spent 72 hours and visited five states in the four days to follow their footy passion.

Why was this possible?

The key to this has been the Thursday night fixture.

In the past, Lincoln claims the most he has ever seen as feasible was four games, but with the Sydney game being played on Thursday and a bit of luck, it became possible.

When the flights were researched it turned out that they could get to all games for about $1000.

The 18 team competition has helped also with more games to choose from.

Next year and beyond:

In 2017, the guys want to go for maybe six games.

But that will require the intervention and good graces of the AFL to get on board.

There are of course games in Tasmania (all six states) and Canberra and Darwin (the two territories), but only five states represented by teams.

Lincoln and Michael believe they may not be the only footy fans crazy enough to want to do this and with a bit of thought there may be hundreds or even thousands of others who would want to add this ‘footy marathon’ to their bucket list too.

It would be a great way to ‘Footify Australia’, Michael believes.

This might be Lincoln and Michael’s contribution to growing it.

A certain sponsor might see it this way too.

BTW – Michael is a long standing NAB customer.

In fact, this might become the Aussie Rules equivalent to the Hajj (pilgrimage).

A footy fan’s ‘right of passage’ perhaps.
