LAST week Mt Buller celebrated the opening of the 2018 snow season with skiing and boarding, ďŹ reworks and festivities.

Blue Bullet chairlift was turning, and Bourke Street ski run opened at 9am with guests of all ages thrilled at making ďŹ rst turns on a soft cover of man-made snow.

Although there wasn’t a lot of snow to be found, Mt Buller was the only Alpine resort with any skiing – and more than a few took the opportunity to hit the slopes.

With the opening weekend now behind them, everyone at Mt Buller has their eyes skyward – waiting for that ďŹ rst real snow dump.

Overcast skies cleared during the day in time for the ofďŹ cial celebrations in the Mt Buller Village Square.

A crowd of over 500 gathered to enjoy traditional Mt Buller hospitality including hot chocolate, gluhwein and roast chestnuts.

Mt Buller’s adorable sled dog puppies were a hit with

guests, and a special delivery of man-made snow to Village Square saw the snowballs ying as kids relished the fun.

Winter Olympians Jakara Anthony, Anton Grimus, Belle Brockhoff and Paralympian Mitch Gourley were joined

by Anthony Carbines (MLA, Ivanhoe) in declaring the 2018 season open.

then crowds danced the night away to cover band, Chunky Jam. Mr Carbines used the occasion to announce a funding grant of $7.5 million for the Mt Buller Water Storage Project through the Regional Infrastructure Fund (details available in separate release).

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting snow, with Channel 7’s Jane Bunn predicting up to 50cm this week, which may see additional lifts open.

Mountain cattlemen say brumbies should stay THE Mountain Cattlemen’s Association of Victoria (MCAV) has hit out at the State Government after news that 1200 brumbies will be re-homed or euthanised in the Alpine National Park, including all of those found on the Bogong High Plains.

Making the announcement earlier this month, Victoria’s Environment Minister, Lily D’Ambrosio, said the removal of feral horses would combat “severe damage” being done to High Country eco systems.

“Feral horses cannot be allowed to run rampant in the Alpine National Park — their hard hooves damage the precious environment and destroy the habitats of threatened species,” Ms D’Ambrosio said.

However, Mansfield-based president of the MCAV, Graeme Stoney, said the claims were at odds with the heritage of Victoria.

“The Bogong High Plains are vast and iconic,” he said.

“The small mob of brumbies that run on the plains - estimated at less than 100 - cause minimal impact to that vast area, and are a significant part of the heritage that makes the plains so special to visitors.

“The Bogong High Plains are one of the few places that

the visiting public can gain a glimpse of the brumbies, an experience which is very exciting and rewarding even to hardened and experienced bush people.”

Mr Stoney said the MCAV supported reducing brumby numbers where there was a proven environmental impact.

“With any debate about public land, there should be a balance; and keeping the small mob on the plains should be part of that balanced management for cultural, heritage and tourism reasons,” Mr Stoney said.

“The MCAV has supported the need to reduce numbers of horses in other parts of the Alpine Park, such as near the NSW border where numbers are increasing to levels where there is impact.”

Last month, the New South Wales Government reversed their planned cull of brumbies after a public backlash.

The brumby control was to take place in the Kosciuszko National Park, where an estimated 6000 wild horses live, but was scrapped.

In a complete about-face, the government now plans to introduce the “brumby bill” to parliament – legally protecting the animals from future culling.

REFRESH: Parks Victoria will replace field staff uniforms as of this week, with the new outfits designed to be more work efficient.

SAVE ME: The MCAV has hit out at the Victorian Government after plans were announced to completely remove all brumbies from the Bogong High Plains, along with a further 1100 in the Alpine National Park.

PARKS Victoria field service officers and rangers will be wearing new uniforms as of this week, replacing the outfit that was first designed 20 years ago.

The new fit-for-purpose uniform uses latesttechnology fabrics, is suitable for all sizes and operational activities, and requires less maintenance.

It is also less expensive, providing an ongoing cost saving for Parks Victoria.

Some 24 Parks Victoria employees trialled the new uniform garments prior to release, providing design input and improvements that have been integrated into the final design.

Water funding makes future look snowy THE future of Mt Buller’s critical Water Storage Project has been secured with the State Government announcing a $7.5 million grant through the Regional Tourism Infrastructure Fund.

Parliamentarian Anthony Carbines (MLA, Ivanhoe) took the opportunity to publicly announce the funding while at Mt Buller to celebrate the opening of the 2018 snow season.

The Mt Buller Water Storage Project will deliver a 100 megalitre water storage facility within the ski area to provide water for drinking, snow making and firefighting.

Identified as a critical component for the long-term security, sustainability and growth of the resort in summer and winter, the Mt

Buller Water Storage Project has been eight years in the making.

“An adequate supply of water is critical for Buller to grow during summer and will double the amount of storage for snowmaking during winter,” Mark Bennetts, chief executive officer Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management, said.

“The project will provide jobs during construction and help secure regional jobs during summer and winter in the years to come.”

The project will increase snowmaking capacity in the 51 hectares of ski area with existing snowmaking, and enable an additional 15 hectares of ski area to receive new snowmaking facilities.

“This announcement is welcome news for Mt Buller and is a positive

step to a more certain future for our skiers and snowboarders,” Laurie Blampied, general manager Buller Ski Lifts, said.

“For Buller Ski Lifts we can now confidently plan to make more snow across more areas in the resort.

“We’ve wanted to grow our snowmaking areas so skiers and boarders can enjoy a more reliable cover on more ski runs and this now gives us the ability to promise more snow on more runs each winter.”

Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management and Buller Ski Lifts have a joint venture partnership in making snow at Mt Buller.

Buller Ski Lifts has committed to spend over $8m in additional snowmaking and associated infrastructure.

“The project includes a range of environmental initiatives including an innovative watering feature to ensure the preservation of important alpine bogs and associated flora and fauna, as well as vegetation offsets on Mt Stirling,” Mr Bennetts said.

“Twelve months of environmental monitoring is already under way to establish a baseline before starting any construction and will continue thereafter.

“The water storage facility will also include walking trails and viewing areas.”

Planning approval for the project was received from the State Government in January 2018 and Environment Protection and Biodiversity approval is expected from the Federal Government shortly.

A contract to complete detailed design and construction will be tendered later this year.

The water storage facility is expected to be constructed during the 2019 - 2020 summer, with fill commencing during winter 2020, and be providing water for Mt Buller from the 2020 – 2021 summer.

Mt Buller and Mt Stirling see over 40 per cent of winter visitation to Victoria’s alpine areas each year, host approximately 500,000 visitor days each year, help generate and maintain 2600 on mountain jobs and many more in the surrounding regions, generate gross expenditure of approximately $600m pa, and contribute $260 million per annum to Victoria’s state revenue.

FUTURE ASSURED: These stake holders from Mount Buller and Mount Stirling have reason to smile, with the future of water supplies on Buller assured.

Police say safety is ‘snow joke’ AS winter sets in, Victoria Police are gearing up for the snow season and are asking those travelling to Alpine areas to keep themselves safe.

General duties police with the help of the Operations Response Unit will have a seven day a week presence at Mount Buller for the duration of the season.

Assistant Commissioner Rick Nugent said police will be focused on the key issues they see every year at the snow.

“Generally, everyone who visits the snow is well behaved and we don’t have too many issues,” he said.

“However, each year we do see a small number of thefts, car accidents, missing people and rescues.

“A lot of these things are avoidable and we ask the community to look after their safety while they are enjoying the snow.

“The best advice police can give is to be prepared for your trip.

“Planning and preparation are the keys to having a safe and enjoyable alpine experience.”

your property such as knowing where your skis/board are at all times, keeping them secure and keeping valuables out of sight.

There may be occasions where police will not be able to rescue or search for those who are injured or lost due to environmental conditions.

It is imperative that those attending snow environments, whether in resorts or outside the resorts prepare appropriately and understand the conditions and environment.

Be aware that conditions can and will change quickly.

To prevent an emergency search and rescue situation, plan your trip carefully, let someone know where you are going and how long you’ll be, wear appropriate wind and waterproof clothing, take care of and check your equipment before skiing or boarding, regularly check weather and snow conditions and if lost – stop, seek shelter and wait.

If going outside the boundaries of the resorts, consider the risks associated with avalanches, in particular, after heavy snow falls.

“We also ask everyone to make sure they enjoy themselves responsibly after a long day of snow activities,” Asst Com Nugent said.

“It’s important in this environment that you have your wits about you, so drink responsibly.

“Police will be working with local licensees and doing spot checks on pubs and clubs.”

BEST described as one of the real characters of the mountain, Andrew ‘Spook’ Kelly first set foot on Mt Buller on November 28, 1969.

At 3pm to be exact.

And things were never again the same… for the mountain, that is.

And 47 years later he is still prowling the resort, shooting from the hip and sharing the energy he brought to the resort way back then.

So, which path led Spook to Buller?

Well, back in New Zealand the young Spook and his family grew up in Auckland, later moving to the Bay of Islands, and would holiday in Whakapapa and Turoa.

So, his early skiing prowess was developed at Mt Ruapehu and also skiing the face of Mt Ngauruhoe, an active volcano with almost 2300m elevation.

At 19 years of age he decided he needed to see more and made his way to Melbourne.

Considering his options over a beer at the Biltmore Hotel in Albert Park, he came across a guy who worked for the Blue Lift Company.

John Hilton-Wood was the owner and Spook worked for John for the next four years.

Spook’s first job on Mt Buller was assisting to install the new Bull Run T-Bar, mainly focused on the electrical installations.

He stayed at the old Blue Lifts Cabin staff accommodation, located above the drive station of the actual lift.

rent Faulty Towers building (now being replaced by the amazing new Whitehorse apartment construction – see, everything keeps evolving).

Upstairs in the cabin was Rav’s Restaurant operated by Vaughn Lucas.

Back then, Orange Lifts had three pomas which all commenced at the area known as Helicopter Flat.

They went up the left hand side of Bourke Street, and continued over a bridge to the top of Baldy and accessed the summit ski area.

To get to the Bull Run area, you had to go through a tunnel (ie under the pomas) and you popped

out next to the Bull Run drive station, Blue Lifts Cabin and Rav’s.

Sven Hayden was the Blue Lifts manager.

It was a different time where all five or six lift company employees were expected to do everything, including summer grooming outside of the winter months.

In 1973, Spook was called up for conscription services to the New Zealand army.

Ready to serve, it was abolished at short notice by the newly elected Labour Government and so Spook returned to Mt Buller where he commenced work with Orange Lifts.

Hans Grimus was general manager and Spook’s fi rst gig was brush cutting and chain sawing for the installation of the Tyrol T-Bar. A bulldozer was driven by a guy named Denny Williams and cleared runs like Cow Camp, Dam Run and Wattle Wiggle.

They created a unique and amazing skiing experience that has lasted generations, in among the enormous ghost gums that dominate the gullies and ridges in that environment.

In the early ‘80s, Spook was involved in establishing the original Horse Hill Chairlift (not to be confused with the current detachable quad that was built many years later).

The bull wheel and gear box were being craned in.

Now, picture Spook on top of the tower jacking the two cross beams apart – the jack has failed, the cross beams have swung in, knocked him off the tower and sent him flying five metres to the ground.

End result?

Both arms broken.

However, he assures me he skied the entire season.

There are a bunch of guys Spook met dating back to the ‘70s that he still skis with today, including Daryl Purcell, Steve Holland, Tim Donaldson, Peter Kendall, Andrew Humphries and Ian Browning.

That’s the snow life style and it’s the reason we all love it.

Times were different and everyone worked hard and played harder.

The erosion of the lodge and club culture has been a sad reality but on the other side of the ledger is the wonderful lifestyle Mt Buller has provided, including meeting his partner of many years, Sue, and their two children.

Local filmmaker strikes again with surfing movie LOCAL filmmaker Tony ‘Harro’ Harrington is presenting his latest surf documentary Emocean at Mt Buller these school holidays with two special presentation screenings followed by a Q&A. Filmed over three years, the documentary explores surfers’ connection to the ocean in a filmic journey around some of the world’s most inspiring surfing locations.

“What started out as a surf film quickly turned into something so much more than wild waves and barrel rides,” Tony said.

This is a documentary with soul; a salty blend of stories by the eclectic assortment of people sharing tales of adventure, adrenaline, inspiration, love and loss, and their relationship with the ocean.

Emocean is a beautiful ride to countless coastal locations.

Some are well-known like Hawaii’s Pipeline, Jaws in Maui and California’s Mavericks and others are wild, far-flung spots tucked away in North West Australia and deep in South Australia.

Audiences who have enjoyed watching Breath in cinemas recently will enjoy this film which explores parallel themes and explores the energy and allure of the ocean and the hold it can have on people.

“It’s a story film, rather than just a surf film, and the best surf film I’ve seen in years,” said Greg Huglin, an Academy Award winning filmmaker.

The Mt Buller screenings are a special opportunity to see the film which has been previewed at the Newport Beach Film Festival in California and will next screen at the Honolulu Surf Film Festival in Hawaii.

Emocean will screen at Mt Buller Cinema on Wednesday, July 4 at 7pm and Thursday, July 12 at 7pm.

The action starts on Buller with each team member having two runs on Bourke Street racecourse.

Following skiing, the teams make their way to Mansfield Golf Course (courtesy of the MMBL) for a barbecue lunch followed by a four person Ambrose event.

After the golf leg finishes, presentations occur at the golf club and a vast array of fantastic prizes are given out to the eight different category winners.

Those wishing to participate in the event need to complete an entry form which is advertised on the Mt Buller website in June each year.

Price hike of 100 per cent on Buller car pass MOUNT Buller Resort Management has conďŹ rmed the price of a 2018 season car pass has risen more than 100 per cent.

Last year, the pass cost $240 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the same product this year will set mountain-goers back $500.

However, Mt Buller has said the price rise was due to a levelling out across the board â&#x20AC;&#x201C; with the cost of some services, particularly the cost of taxi fares, slashed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;All the prices for every product that involves parking, resort entry or taxis, was reviewed,â&#x20AC;? Mt Buller marketing manager, Katie Bowker, said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At the end of the day, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an exercise in trying to make it as equitable as possible across the board. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In the context of all the other passes and all the other products, that ($500) was the appropriate price determined for that product.â&#x20AC;?

Ms Bowker explained that while the price of the season car pass had risen, most would be better off ďŹ nancially if they chose to buy parking passes online. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There will be a small group of people for who the pass doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t represent the same value it used to â&#x20AC;&#x201C; (but) they may well ďŹ nd when they do their arithmetic on seven or eight visits to the mountain that they actually make cost savings purchasing individual tickets,â&#x20AC;? Ms Bowker said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is 20 per cent saving

One mother, who did not wish to be named, said the price hike now made the pass unaffordable. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My children ski with a MansďŹ eld school, and I choose to run them up in the car each week as they get sick on the bus,â&#x20AC;? she said.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;There is no way I can afford $500 for a car pass â&#x20AC;&#x201C; I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t understand why Buller canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a locals system, where if you can prove you live in the shire you get a substantial discount.â&#x20AC;?

A 10 per cent discount is offered on a season car pass to MansďŹ eld residents, and entry to Mt Stirling is free for all residents on a Thursday during the winter season.

Last week, Jill Archer contacted the Buller News, saying she was â&#x20AC;&#x153;astonishedâ&#x20AC;? at the price rise. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I feel that Buller management are trying to force everyone to purchase online day passes so that they

can assess visitor numbers each day for their own logistics,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It seems locals are the biggest losers in this price hike. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stay on the mountain, we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ski on peak days, yet we have been hit with this extraordinary price hike in the car pass fee.â&#x20AC;?

Using an example of a family of four making six overnight visits, Ms Bowker said the new pricing structure would save them $213 (online). â&#x20AC;&#x153;The RMB has set resort entry prices at levels similar to, or below other Victorian ski resorts,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s up to people to do their own math.â&#x20AC;?

Season members get together THE opening weekend of the ski season was a time for festivity on the mountain, and the Mount Buller season membership holders were among those lifting a glass to the season ahead.

The Bank of Queensland (BOQ) is a new Buller Ski Lifts partner this season and their representatives were delighted to participate in the opening festivities and meet season members over the long weekend.

They also saw a special screening of Find the Line in the Mt Buller Cinema.

Here are our top tips when purchasing alpine property.

Method of ownership: There are various types of property available in the alpine resorts, the most common being private apartments, managed apartments and club memberships.

A common form of ownership of apartments is a sublease coupled with a shareholding in a head lease ‘Body Corporate’.

As a shareholder you are a member of the lessee company with rights of involvement in the management and caretaking of the buildings and improvements.

The share and sublease is your title to ownership of the apartment.

You should be clear as to the method of ownership and seek appropriate legal advice where there are any concerns.

Length of lease: The vast majority of interests in alpine land come in the form of long term crown leases.

Look for commercial arrangements and tenure to suit your business proposal or project.

There are restrictions that may need to be negotiated to conduct business operations within the resorts and ski field areas.

Fitout of apartment: Most properties in an alpine resort are sold on a ‘walk in/ walk out’ basis with all the mod-cons provided.

Having furniture delivered to the property can be difficult during the snow season.

Be careful to ensure that a detailed inventory is included in the contract and check the condition of items at the time of signing the contract.

These items should be in the same workable condition on settlement, fair wear and tear excepted.

Finance: Before buying any property, you must always be sure of your finance.

The type of leasehold arrangement for alpine property has a significant impact on whether banks are prepared to lend.

Registration of alpine leases has made accessibility to finance more readily available.

There are numerous methods of structuring finance.

This needs to be examined depending on your use of the premises and your financial circumstances.

The alpine resorts present wonderful lifestyle and business opportunities.

The resorts contribute over $1.5 billion to the Australian economy annually.
