Spring is in the air at Mt Buller snowfields

SPRING is just around the corner but Mt Buller is gearing up for an all-white September.

The mountain is currently covered in just under a metre of snow and is gearing up for what is set to be a snowy spring.

September will see a huge range of events on the calendar, with the ABOM Mogul Challenge and Subaru Australian Interschool Championships, the dazzling ‘80s Day, as well as the Corona Extra Pond Skim National Championships all happening throughout the month.

Two great events will hit the mountain on Saturday, September 5 – the ABOM Mogul Challenge and the ever so colourful ‘80s Day. The annual ABOM Mogul Challenge will see world-class

The Corona Extra Pond Skim National Championships will return to Mt Buller for the second time on Saturday, September 19.

Spectators will enjoy seeing participants dressed in crazy costumes skim across a temporary dam on Bourke Street, taking on silly stunts to get from one side of the dam to the other.

Careful, credit card theft on the rise

VICTORIA Police are concerned at the increase in deception type offences involving the fraudulent use or theft of credit cards.

Crime statistics have shown that these types of offences have increased by 29 per cent over the past year.

Credit card thefts have also seen a rise with Eftpos or ATM facilities increasingly being used in deception offences where a credit card has been

stolen or used fraudulently.

Goulburn Valley divisional crime manager Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Maher said the increased popularity of contactless payment options such as ‘tap and go’ and ‘paywave’ have made credit cards a more attractive item for theft.

“The majority of these crimes are opportunistic and so can be avoided,” he said.

“These thefts are more likely to occur when credit cards

are left unsecured and left in plain sight.

“They have been stolen from motor vehicles, houses, mailboxes, handbags and wallets when they have not been properly secured.

“During a house burglary at Broadford, a handbag containing the victim’s personal papers and cards was stolen; within a few hours the offenders had used the credit card 12 times, with a total cost

of more than $400 - before the victim knew the card had been stolen.

“There are some very simple steps to take to avoid becoming a victim of this type of fraud,” Detective Senior Sergeant Maher said.

These steps include: keep credit/debit cards secure and in a safe place; don’t leave credit/debit cards and other financial documents in your car;

lock your mailbox and regularly collect mail; store cards away immediately after using ATMs; and utilise any extra security features that your bank may offer which will protect your credit cards from being used by anyone but you.

“Regularly monitor your account transactions and avoid using public computers to make online shopping or banking transactions,” Det

Snr Sgt Maher said.

“Report any unknown transactions that appear on financial statements to your bank and lost or stolen credit cards should immediately be reported to the police, as well as to your bank.”

Hi ho, hi ho, it’s off to work we go

By LIZ WEBB THERE’S a crew at Mt Buller who are always working hard, but rarely ever seen.

The Mt Buller gnomes are a happy little group and the only people who have ever seen them going about their work are the Mansfield Mount Buller Bus Line (MMBL) drivers.

According to the MMBL team, the gnomes moved in about 10 years ago, first at the gnome tree house and then their relatives moved in up at the village.

No one knows where they came from or why they appeared.

It’s all very mysterious.

The next thing we knew is that their little house appeared, and since then gnomes from all around the world have visited Mt Buller at different times, especially in winter.

According to MMBL staff who

have tried to make contact with the gnomes, there is only one person who is able to talk with them and has seen them moving around.

Many years ago, a group of gnomes were kidnapped and locked away, but one driver, Mr D, saved them and since then, the gnomes only reveal their true selves to him and contact him when they have a problem or need extra food or building materials.

Mr D often stops his bus at the gnome house, especially when he has kids suffering from travel sickness on board.

He has found that once the kids get out and look inside the house and see the sleeping gnomes, they become so involved in trying to wake them up that it takes their minds off their queasiness and they spend the rest of their trip up the mountain, talking excitedly about

their visit to the gnomes.

(Gnomes, like pygmy possums, are nocturnal creatures so they always sleep through the visits.)

The gnomes are now so popular on the mountain, that most Mt Buller operators encourage one or two to spend time inside their businesses and there’s even a booklet providing information about the Mt Buller gnomes and where they can be seen during the day – but don’t try to look for them at night, because that’s when they leave their mountain positions and go out to work or party with their friends.

Our youngest skier is two years old and the oldest is 62 (one of our best teachers among the group).

Our favourite highlight of the week is the whole gang attending the annual ski off down the family run following hot chocolates and donuts at Koflers.

Our trip is the highlight of the year for all of us and we now have a group Facebook page dedicated to this annual trip where we can share memorable highlights from each other’s day.

Everyone improves out of sight year-on-year and the encouragement and positivity among the group is what makes it so special.

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of the amazing staff on the mountain who have always been more than accommodating to all our needs; from ski hire to ski school and transport around the mountain, our trip just wouldn’t be the same without the friendly and patient staff.

Impounded after speeding at 178km/h MANSFIELD Highway Patrol members impounded an Audi Q7 after it was detected speeding in Merrijig last week.

Officers clocked the SUV travelling at 178km/h in a 100km/h section of Mt Buller Road around 9.30am on Tuesday.

Police intercepted the vehicle and spoke to the driver, a 19-year-old Balwyn man.

The car was impounded and the man is facing towing costs of $1045.

He is expected to be charged on summons with excessive speed and speed dangerous.

KIDS’ SPACE: This Mt Buller ski instructor is teaching a group of learners who hit the slopes in near perfect conditions with lots of fresh snow on the ground.

ALTHOUGH the 10 year average for numbers of visitors to Mt Buller has risen by some 10 per cent, this year’s figures are still down by 10 per cent from 2014.

However, these figures are expected to rise again with the annual Interschool competitions starting next week and the spring racing schedule in full swing.

In week 10 of the season stats show 29,304 visitors arrived on Mt Buller and some 1167 to Mt Stirling, however, these numbers are still down by 10 per cent and six per cent respectively.

Mt Buller is still leading the way when it comes to the most visitors across the Victorian snowfields taking almost half of all stats – totalling 76,607 across

all resorts for week 10.

The stats are again reflected in the year to date numbers – also down by 10 per cent across all resorts.

The declining pattern continues with the visitor days for 2015 with Buller numbers down by 12 per cent and Stirling down by 17 per cent.

reflected in the lack of early snow and as snow continues to fall across the region, numbers are expected to lift between now and mid-September.

On a higher note when yearly figures are looked at on that 10 year basis Mt Buller has gained some 14 per cent additional visitors while Mt Stirling has jumped by 19 per cent.

Two therapies appeal to range of patients at Mt Buller Gym

By LIZ WEBB FOR many years now, Mt Buller skiers and boarders of all ages have beaten a path to Mt Buller Gym to visit Andy and Marg - the resident physiotherapists.

This year, Marg has moved on and Mt Buller now has a resident myotherapist.

Zoe Kettlewell has joined the team, and the choice of two therapies is appealing to a wider range of patients.

Zoe, while a relatively new practising myotherapist, is a very long time Mt Buller identity.

She has skied Buller since she was five years old, worked at the Whitt for two seasons and is famous for her “Blue Bras on Bourke Street” fundraiser in 2011, which collected funds for prostate cancer awareness.

Mt Buller’s physiotherapist Andi Rogers is also well known and loved.

She has ‘saved’ many injured snow sports enthusiasts in the past eight years.

Andi is also a snowboard and ski school instructor and is probably most famous for her yoga classes.

These two passionate sportswomen are the ideal professionals to call upon when your body is screaming for relief from the pain caused by the stresses and strains of your favourite snow sport.

There are distinctions between the two therapies and explained very briefly, myotherapy (muscle therapy) is a form of physical therapy used to

treat or prevent soft tissue pain and restricted joint movement.

Myotherapy incorporates trigger point therapy and a wide range of soft tissue massage and manipulation, dry needling, cupping and joint mobilisation.

Myotherapists also use stretching, nutritional advice, exercise prescription, postural advice, and heat and cold therapy, all to target specific muscle areas.

It requires little patient participation.

The patient does little active work during the session.

FOLLOWING on from a request from Charles Street in the Buller News, July 24 issue, for answers to the Mt Stirling road issue, John Huber, ARMB chief executive officer had this to say this week: “Earlier this year the Minister for Planning Richard Wynne asked for the Planning Permit Application for the Link Road Project to be assessed by an independent advisory committee.

“As such, Planning Panels Victoria convened an advisory committee to consider the planning application in relation to this proposal.

“The advisory committee hearing has since occurred and the resulting report and recommendations have been provided to the Minister for Planning.”

The arguments around the proposed link road to be built between Mt Buller and Mt Stirling have raised some issues from skiers and long-time users of the area.

Mr Street has been opposing the proposal saying there are easier and more cost effective solutions to the link road.

Backing him up in more recent times has been former operations manager for Mt Stirling Alpine Resort, John Coffey, and long-time skier John Eisner.

It is hoped that once the Minister for Planning has received the report and recommendations his decision will be made public as soon as possible.

BSL recognises long serving team members

BULLER Ski Lifts celebrated its long serving team members last week, with an awards ceremony held at the Moosehead Bar and Bistro on Friday evening.

Each year, team members reaching a ‘years of service milestone’ are treated to a night out in recognition of their contribution and loyalty to the mountain.

A staggering 78 team members were recognised at this year’s event, representing Ski Patrol, Mountain Operations,

the Ski and Snowboard School, Buller Sports and hospitality.

Of these, eight team members were recognised for 20 years of service, two for 25 years and three for 30 years.

Most notably, ski patroller Andy Laidlaw and ski instructor Peter Mioni were recognised for 35 years with Buller Ski Lifts.

Both Laidlaw and Mioni, who joined the Mt Buller team in 1980, have experienced a vast number of changes to the resort during their time there.

This includes the mountain operating with one lift company for the first time, following the Bourke Street Lift Company’s successful takeover of Mt BSL Pty Ltd in 1985.

General manager of Buller Ski Lifts, Laurie Blampied, who is just a year away from receiving a 20 years of service award himself, was delighted to see such long serving members of the community recognised for their contribution.

“The number of individuals receiving a years of service

award is a testament to the Mt Buller community and culture within Buller Ski Lifts,” Laurie said.

“We are proud to see so many of our workforce return year after year and I am delighted we are able to recognise their contribution to the resort with an event like this,” he said.

As the largest operator on Mt Buller, BSL employs up to 700 staff during the winter months with over 50 per cent comprised of returning staff.

OFF AND RACING: The Division II girls were off and racing, with Arkie Patern of Methodist Ladies College, Ella Best of Melbourne Grammar, and Stephanie Allen of Methodist Ladies College.

THE 2015 Victorian Interschool Cross Country Championships were held recently on Mt Buller, and with plenty of snow the action was guaranteed.

Geelong Grammar and Wangaratta High School were the stand out competitors, putting their local knowledge to good use when covering the terrain.

Ever since their addition to the Victorian Interschool Snowsports Championships the Cross Country disciplines of Cross Country Classical and Cross Country Relay (a skate event) have been very popular.

They have also served as a very important means of introducing many Victorian school children to the sport of Cross Country Skiing.

Over many years Mt Buller has provided a wonderful venue for this competition, and many of the sport’s elite athletes have risen through the various Interschool Age Divisions and gone on to represent Australia at World Cups, World Championships, and also the Olympics.

Mattis takes out Silver race

By PAM ZIERK-MAHONEY THE 2015 Stirling Silver race, an annual event organised through the Melbourne Nordic, has been run and won.

Taking out the honours this year was Estonian ski instructor Mattis Jaama.

Mattis works for Stirling Experience instructing children and adults in the finer points of cross country skiing.

He took out the race, which is an uphill climb from King Saddle (Geelong Grammar Hut), in a time of just 26 minutes.

Second place went to Rob Cutris who crossed the line just 30 seconds behind Mattis.

Melbourne Nordic now organises this long-standing ski event formerly run by the Mansfield Nordic Ski Club - at Mount Stirling.

This race is part of the Skike Victorian Ski Chase race series.

Historically, this race was run on a fairly traditional undulating race circuit.

In an effort to give the event a distinctive flavour that capitalises on the unique character of Mount Stirling, the race has been changed to a point-to-point hill climb as of 2012.

The race starts at King Saddle and covers 7.5km and climbs 360m.

IMPARTING KNOWLEDGE: Mattis Jaama, Mt Stirling ski instructor, imparts his cross country ski knowledge to this group of Mansfield Primary School students during lessons recently. Mattis recently also took out the Stirling Silver race, following on from the Mt Buller Adventure race some weeks earlier.

MT BULLER has strong ties to the Olympic movement, with more winter Olympians calling Mt Buller home than any other Australian resort.

One, the spots of grease fall off the lift towers as your chairlift goes underneath them.

Secondly, there is a way to get the grease off without compromising your gear.

The grease spots can be easily removed by using Eucalyptus Oil. To do this, dampen the fabric, and then drop a few

drops of Eucalyptus Oil onto a clean damp cloth.

Using the cloth gently rub the stain until you see it move.

Once it begins to move gently rub the stain between your fingers, adding another drop of oil if needed.

This should remove the stain.

Remember to rinse straight after to avoid any staining.

SOME 120 people attended the official opening of local artist Wendy Jagger’s one woman exhibition at Alpine Central on August 8.

President of the Arts Council of Mansfield and Mt Buller, Lee Huber, said the opening was a fantastic success with many of Wendy’s art pieces being sold on the night.

“About 40 people came up

the mountain especially for the opening which was great,” she said.

Welcoming everyone to the opening was ARMB chief executive officer John Huber, followed by ARMB board vice chairman, Dean Belle, who outlined Wendy’s career path.

Wendy then spoke on how she goes about painting in the snow and creating her fine porcelain pieces.

MT BULLER’S Short Film Festival was held last Saturday night to a packed Alpine Cinema audience.

Coordinator of the event Mark Ashkanasy said there was a great depth of talent shown in creating all of the entries offered at this year’s event.

“Based on the success of this year’s event another screening will take place in September with a date yet to be advised,” Ashkanasy said.

Mark Ashkanasy and co-producer of the event Mark Woodsford thanked all of the event sponsors who helped make this another successful competition.

This year entries were welcomed from school students.

Ashkanasy and Woodsford also invited anyone interested in the Short Film Festival to come and join their committee.

MT BULLER Race Club hosted the legendary Melbourne City Land Rover King of the Mountain 2015 on the slopes over the weekend.

More than 600 young and passionate snowboarders and skiers competed in this 3-day event in the disciplines of Giant Slalom, Parallel Giant Slalom and Boardercross/ Skicross.

Competitors showed great boarding and skiing throughout the entire event, which started on Friday with a Giant Slalom competition on Little Buller Spur, continued on Saturday with a Parallel Giant Slalom on Summit and concluded on Sunday with a Boardercross and Skicross on the newly built and challenging Skyline course.

Stoffl Maier, program director at the Mt Buller Race Club, likes to thank the Buller Ski Lifts Mountain Operations Team, the Ski Patrol and especially the Mt Buller Race and Events Department for their incredible support in the lead up and during the event.

Through a great team effort, the events were run extremely professionally and provided a great stage for the young and upcoming local champions to show case their skills and competitiveness.

Besides competing each single day for glory, competitors also tried to achieve great results in all three events to maximise their chances to win the King of the Mountain overall trophy.

“Congratulations to the overall winners of the Melbourne City Land Rover King of the Mountain 2015,” Maier said.

“Wood Run is known for its big bumps and Bull Run Bowl is the hot spot for Buller’s expert skiers,” Watkins said.

“However, this Saturday the Bull Run Bowl will be an infusion of ski culture, funky music and friends, so I hope you can make it down to ski and watch.”

FreeBOM is back this year although you may not have noticed it last year.

It is a core free skiing event that celebrates the rich history of skiing on Mt Buller and the Bull Run Bowl.

Watkin McLennan, event creator says “FreeBOM is for every skier.

“It is your chance to get a cheer from the lift, a highfive at the bottom of the run and a shout-out from an MC in a one piece suit,” he said.

“It’s not about how well you ski it’s about how well you want to ski,” Watkins says.

“This is theatre, this is action, this is the way skiing was meant to be before espresso coffee made it just another Saturday.”

The competition is much like a big mountain event but instead of being held on the side of a steep rocky peak the event is located on Mt Buller’s infamous Wood Run – birthplace of Aussie bump skiing and an achievable challenge for intermediate skiers and a blast for experts.

Skiers will be judged on their skiing fluidity, aggression, line choice and control.

The format is relaxed and the judges are as much a part of the entertainment as they are looking at the skiing.

IT always pays to know your work surrounds, and staff of the Mt Buller Mt Stirling Alpine Resorts Management team took time out recently to familiarise themselves more with the surrounds of Mt Stirling.

“We recently took a family over to Mt Stirling which took in some of the trails and what’s new at the visitor centre and café,” said marketing assistant Kate Monahan.

“Mt Stirling this season is offering fantastic facilities for those who prefer the natural environment for cross country skiing and snowshoeing.”

Staff set off on the trails to experience for themselves the wonders of Stirling and the pleasure of snow shoeing the terrain - then went back for a warming hot chocolate or coffee at the refurbished cafe.

Before setting off they were fitted correctly with snow shoes or cross country skis, whichever they preferred, by Stirling Experience operator Craig Jones and his staff.

They were accompanied on their walk by members of the Stirling Ski Patrol.

Power blowout quickly fixed DOWN but not out completely is the way a power outage could be described for Mt Buller last week.

“It’s been a bit of a challenging week on the mountain with a fault in the resort’s underground power supply causing disruptions in power to the Village and ski area,” reported Buller Ski Lifts’ Libby Blampied.

The power outage meant a number of buildings and chairlifts were running on generators which were specially transported up the mountain on the Monday evening.

“The great news was that

by Wednesday the issue had been completely rectified, 20 lifts were back turning by Thursday and all lifts were set to open on that weekend - and it’s all systems go once again,” Libby said.

It is believed that during the power outage some staff members were accommodated at different lodges and the road to the top was closed for approximately one hour while the generators made their way up.

Half of the road was also closed for one night near White Bridge to enable new cabling to be laid - the cause of the outage was a ‘blowout’ in the cable connections.

Good planning, great staff and cooperation saw as little as possible disruption to the flow of services to the mountain.

Fat bikes are coming out to play.

Mt Stirling is continuing the trial introduction of fat bikes at Telephone Box Junction (TBJ) this winter.

During the month of September, visitors are able to use fat bikes on Circuit Road from TBJ to King Saddle, and on the Circuit Road from TBJ to Howqua Gap between

9am-4pm on weekends.

Riders will need to check in with the ski patrol director at TBJ to identify which part of the Circuit Road is available for use on each permitted day.

The trial run will only be held on weekends throughout September to help Mt Stirling Resort Management determine whether the opportunity for fat bikes can be further developed within the resort.
