THE annual Snow Sisters event was held last Thursday, July 12 at the Ski Club of Victoria, attracting 130 women to the night.

The event is the biggest one held to date and looks like it will continue to grow with so many ladies wanting tickets to attend.

Snow Sisters started with a small group of six ladies going out for dinner on the last Thursday of the school holidays and grew each year.

ing women, Sonia Evans, Sandra Maier and Suzanne Rumble, created Snow Sisters with a purpose in mind – to raise funds to help others enjoy Mt Buller as much as they did.

It took a whole team of women to bring the event together this year with the

sourcing and setting up of a silent and live auction, decorating, preparing giveaway bags with amazing J Bronze and Synergie Skin care products and live entertainment for the night.

Snow Sisters believe it is important that the women that visit Mt Buller have the op-

portunity to make friends, feel part of the community and never need to ski alone.

They promote an inclusive atmosphere, creating new friendships which allow support, families to meet, advice and much more.

This year Snow Sisters proudly raised funds to assist

Multiclass Snowsports Association get more kids with a range of abilities to enjoy the joy of skiing.

A two-day training camp, a supervised race day and a celebration evening bib presentation are managed by volunteers trained to provide assistance to children with physical or intellectual disabilities.

Snow clearing machines roll out across the Alpine region SNOW clearing operations are in full swing across Victoria’s alpine region, with drivers reminded to take extra care following a spate of minor accidents on Mt Buller over the last few weeks.

VicRoads regional director, Nicki Kyriakou, said heavy snow falls made for challenging conditions on the roads. “It’s shaping up to be a fantastic season on the slopes, and with increased visitors expected over the school holidays, our snow clearing crews are out in force,� Ms Kyriakou said. “Over the (school holiday) weekends, we had a range of vehicles - including snow ploughs - in action.

Ms Kyriakou said drivers can play their part by ensuring their vehicles are equipped for driving in challenging conditions. “Heavy snow, fog and ice are all part of winter in the Alpine region and we want drivers to be prepared so they can arrive at their destination safely. “All visitors to Alpine resorts must carry snow chains and ďŹ t them as required, while those heading to Mount Hotham are reminded that diamond pattern

July 21: Come and watch some of Australia’s best skiers and snowboarders descend the Mountain at Australia’s premier rail event, Burton Cattleman’s Rail Jam, which will be returning for the 13th consecutive year. The Cattleman’s Rail Jam is one of the country’s longest running snowboarding rail events, and all participants are in the running for a share of $10,000 worth of cash and prizes.

July 22: Come to the Moosehead Bar for Quiz Night. Starting at 7pm, there will be free entry and many prizes to be won.

August 11 – 26: Come and visit Tony Harrington’s exhibition of photographic images by Buller local and world renowned Big Wave and Big Mountain photographer (there are more details to come shortly).

Saturdays and Sundays until August 26: Come on up to the mountain where you can ski, board, take a lesson on Bourke St ski run or go tobogganing in the Village Snowplay Park until 8.30pm, all under lights. This is complemented by live entertainment and extended

shuttle hours for the best weekend around. Day visitors that arrive after 3pm for twilight skiing nights will get 30 per cent off standard gate entry price (not available online).

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday: Starting at 4pm, there will be a free Magical Mountains show with free hot chocolate for the kids.

Every Saturday: Between 3:30 and 4:30pm, Miss Twisty will be holding some free kids entertainment with balloon twisting fun for everyone.

Buller Air Zone: Mt Buller’s newest indoor activity, the Buller Air Zone is officially open.

Features include five high performance trampolines including an uber tramp, a giant air bag, an inflatable bouldering wall, a self-belaying climbing wall. Open 12pm–8pm Monday until Thursday, 12pm-10pm on Friday and Saturday, and 12pm-7pm on Sunday.

Weekend accidents on Mt Buller HEAVILY congested roads, combined with snowy weather, made for dangerous driving conditions on Mount Buller over the weekend.

With snow down as low as the gnome tree, traffic came to a standstill on Saturday when a number of traffic incidents occurred – including a white Land Rover ending sideways in the gutter.

On the same day, Ambulance Victoria crews treated a special patient between jobs overnight.

A joey was found in the middle of the road, next to his mother who sadly had died after being hit by a car.

Paramedics were able to rescue the joey, wrap him in blankets and safely transport him to a nearby animal shelter.

ACCIDENTS: There were a number of minor accidents on Mt Buller over the weekend, as heavy snowfall made for challenging driving conditions.

Should ‘take snow chains off here’ signs be installed on Mt Buller?

AN online poll – canvassing if there should be “take chains off now” signs at the base of Mt Buller, has returned a staggering 1100 in favour of the proposal.

Globe, the Facebook run questionnaire said roads were being destroyed as unaware tourists left their snow chains on car tyres back to Mansfield.

“We believe this could help with the conditions of

the roads, the frustration of people getting stuck behind drivers driving all the way to Mansfield or Jindabyne with chains on, and a better flow of traffic coming down the mountains,” the poll read.

Some 1200 people voted in the poll, which was open for seven days.

Buller celebrates kids week in style RECENTLY Buller celebrated some of their smallest guests with special, kid friendly events on offer.

Locky the Cocky joined Barry the Possum and friends for a fun filled singalong at the ABOM from 4pm with free entry and hot chocolates, while the Yoplait Petit Miam Buller Kids Race kicked off.

The children were able to race their friends – both on skis and snowboards down Bourke Street, and at the end of the day, all participants were given medals for their efforts.

There was also free indoor sports activities in the new Buller Air Zone including rock climbing and trampolines throughout the week, providing kids with

a warmer form of entertainment.

On Friday, July 6, Mt Buller came alive with a special dress up day, with kids winning prizes for the best dressed kid on the mountain, along with another free sing-along at the ABOM at 4pm.

On Saturday, July 7, twilight skiing kicked off welcoming in a month of discounted ski tickets.

To mark the occasion, free glow in the dark face painting was provided by Miss Twisty from 3-5pm.

Miss Twisty will also be on the mountain again this Saturday between 3.30 and 4.30pm, and will be holding some free kids entertainment with balloon twisting fun for everyone.

Annual Mark Adams Ski and Golf day success THE 20th Annual Mark Adams Ski and Golf Day was held recently, and despite the awful weather the event raised a staggering $23,100.

Since 2006, the event has raised $300,000 for local schools’ snow sport programs.

This year the event started with the RT Edgar Calcutta dinner at the Abom Moosehead on Mt Buller, with

most teams present.

The next day started at 8.30am on Bourke St, with all teams attempting to have the closest two ski runs.

While Bourke Street isn’t considered a hard course, the two consecutive runs required two different courses which made for a challenge.

To determine the final score for the event, the whole team ski times are added with the Ambrose

golf team event scores.

The golf course was in fantastic condition and all the players were pleased.

The skiing was won by Mark Adams Real Estate Team 2 with a total time differential of just over one second – the team was made up of James Tehan, Rob Aivatoglou, Zach Adams and Stuart Hogg.

The overall winner of the day was the team ‘“Fore!”

With No Name’, who shot 11 under the stick and won the golf by six shots with a net score of 50.3 using the handicap system.

At the end of the day there was a presentation with loads of prizes for the winners of the golf, skiing, overall, closest to the pin and longest drive.

Geoff Walker, on behalf of the local schools, thanked Buller Ski Lifts, Laurie

Blampied, the Mt Buller Race Department and Mansfield Golf Club for their great effort again in putting on the spectacular event.

Geoff also thanked Mark Adams Real Estate for its very generous long term sponsorship of the event.

All the players loved the event and are itching to come next year and help the local schools’ snow sport programs.

Buller Air Zone launch gives Mt Buller new altitude

MOUNT Buller has recently opened Australia’s newest indoor acrobatic facility, the Buller Air Zone.

Officially launched during the school holidays, Air Zone features one of the largest airbags in Australia - and the largest inflatable bouldering wall in the world.

A landmark partnership between the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia (OWIA), Ski and Snowboard Australia, Buller Ski Lifts, and the Mt Buller and Mt Stirling Resort Management Board (RMB) saw athlete training programs at Mt Buller recognised as an official Olympic Training Centre.

This cements Mt Buller as the Victorian home of future Olympic champions in aerials and mogul skiing.

These elite athletes need an indoor facility to train, develop and enhance their acrobatic skills.

To that end, the OWIA and RMB have spent half a million dollars constructing the Buller Air Zone, a purpose built facility which will also be open to the public throughout summer and winter.

Mark Bennetts, chief executive officer of the Mt Buller and Mt Stirling Resort Man-

agement Board, said it was a big day for Buller.

“This is a tremendously exciting facility for the mountains,” he said.

“Our elite athletes will be able to train year-round, and visitors will be able to play, jump and climb in our freestyle playground.

“It will help boost tourism to Mt Buller and the Mansfield region, providing another activity for families, school groups and training camps in summer.

“It also provides another activity for winter visitors to enjoy during the daytime or at night once the lifts stop turning.”

The Buller Air Zone features five trampolines - including a 20’x10’ mega tramp, waterfall tramp, giant air bag, “walk the ridge”, climbing ladder, inflatable bouldering wall and fixed climbing wall with self-belay devices.

The facility will be open daily throughout winter and at selected times throughout summer.

“We encourage everyone visiting Mt Buller to come and give BAZ a go,” Mr Bennetts said.

A REPRESENTATIVE from the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation (VCGLR) recently attended the annual Mount Buller and Mansfield Shire Liquor Forum with Victoria Police and licensees.

VCGLR education officer Robyn Donald, Acting Inspector Mark Byers and Senior Sergeant Damian Keegan from Victoria Police spoke to local licensees and venue staff about how to remain compliant during the busy ski season.

Licensees were provided support resources including the Safe Function Guidelines, Responsible Service of Alcohol principles poster, question and answer checklists and action plans along with copies of the new signage required to be displayed in venues from July 1. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The VCGLR website has a wealth of information available but meeting with licensees and their staff face to face means we can dis-

cuss their particular concerns and any local issues,â&#x20AC;? said Ms Donald.

There are over 70 forums across Victoria that see industry representatives, police, council and regulators working together to keep the community safe.

Topics discussed included responsible service of alcohol, minors, refusal of service to intoxicated patrons, accepted forms of identification including the new key pass in Digital ED, upcoming changes to the Liquor Control Reform Act 1998 and the strong importance of being aware of the weather conditions in which they work.

The VCGLR is responsible for regulating Victoriaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gambling and liquor industries to ensure their integrity and to minimise harm.

POW Australia saving the snow WITH snow flurries across the Australian Alps this week it’s an apt time for the launch of the Australian chapter of the global environmental group Protect Our Winters (POW).

The official launch of POW Australia this week will be followed by a visit from twotime world champion pro skier Chris Davenport.

Davenport is a POW board member and is widely regarded as one of the premier big mountain skiers in the world today.

Among his many mountaineering achievements Chris was the first person to ski all 54 of Colorado’s 14,000 foot peaks in less than a year.

He has also guided and skied on Mt Everest.

Chris is visiting Mt Buller and Thredbo resorts during his time in Australia, spreading the word on “why we need winter” and will speak at the Mt Buller cinema on Tuesday, July 24.

The talk will be followed by a screening of the new Teton Gravity Research film ‘Rogue Elements’ in which Mt Buller’s Mitch Reeves features.

Thredbo will then build on the program with a Hike for POW to the summit of Mt Kosciuszko on Friday, July 27, and a speaker program that evening in-resort.

What you NEED TO KNOW about driving this winter.

Numerous types of tyres are used for winter driving, each with varying, and often misunderstood, levels of safety and performance.

3MPSF WINTER TYRES EXPLAINED Winter or snow tyres that receive the official snowflake marking, also known as the 3PMSF ‘3 Peak Mountain Snow Flake’ symbol, provide verified safety for demanding snow conditions.

The definition of a winter tyre is stated in the European ECE regulation 117.02. It states that the tyre’s tread pattern, tread material or structure must be primarily designed in order to provide better characteristics than ordinary tyres in terms of acceleration, traction and stopping under demanding winter conditions, and that it must be verified.

The 3PMSF symbol is standardised and controlled by EU authorities, guaranteeing that the product meets the conditions of rigorous testing and is suitable for operation in difficult weather conditions.

3PMSF marked tyres have been approved through regulation tests to guarantee a higher level of performance under winter conditions stated in the European ECE regulation 117.02.

3PMSF winter tyres are designed to stay flexible in temperatures below 7°C and provide excellent grip on snow, slush, wet roads and bare asphalt.The aggressive tread design and siping provides grip and stability in snow and will disperse away water and wet snow slush.

Compared to M+S tyres, 3PMSF winter tyres offer superior braking and cornering performance on wet and rough ice, soft and hard-packed snow, and slush.

A tyre without the 3PMSF marking cannot be marketed as a snow tyre or a winter tyre.

ALL TERRAIN/OFF ROAD TYRES EXPLAINED Tyres marketed as AT Tyres (All-Terrain/Mud-Terrain/ Off Road) are not winter tyres even though some may display the 3PMSF symbol. An AT tyre complying with the FMVSS 139 requirements (1 test method) do not comply with the UNECE R117 (3 test methods) because these regulations have a totally different set of characteristics.

This is easy to understand as AT tyres have little, or no, siping.

Sipings are the thin slits across a tread surface, that improve traction in snow and icy conditions HOW WET SNOW SLUSH AFFECTS DRIVING An icy road surface is not always the cause of the problems on alpine roads, deep wet snow slush can easily turn a driver into a passenger.

On a wet country road hydroplaning or aquaplaning is dangerous. However slush planing, that can occur when driving on wet soft snow on alpine roads, is even more dangerous.When slush planing occurs you cannot steer, or brake, the vehicle because the tyre loses contact with the road even at very low speed.

of water on the road surface, and possibly ice can make driving extremely dangerous, even for the most experienced driver. Slush has a higher viscosity than water, therefore is pastier, and cannot flow through the tyre tread channels as easily as water.

The tread pattern of an M+S tyre will not disperse this wet snow slush from underneath the tyre. The contact between the tyre and the road will be lost, and so will the grip.

USING SNOW CHAINS Snow chains are designed to allow a vehicle to climb a gradient that is beyond the grip level of the tyres. State regulations require all vehicles in Victoria, and 2WDs in NSW, to carry wheel chains that can be correctly fitted to your tyres when required.The Owners Manual of your vehicle will detail what wheel and tyre combinations are approved for the fitting of wheel chains. In order for wheel chains to work effectively they must penetrate into the compacted snow surface to provide the maximum amount of traction.

Traction may be lost and wheel spin experienced when the snow and/or ice begins to break up and melts to slush - this is what causes chain wear. In these situations the vehicle can slide on the wheel chains.

PERFORMING A TRACTION TEST Here is a safe way to determine how much tyre grip is available for any vehicle when driving in challenging winter conditions.

When it is safe to do so, at a safe speed, and, making sure that no one is close behind you, apply the brakes firmly until the wheels lock up and the ABS is activated.

Keep the brake pedal pressed down until the vehicle stops completely. This will give you a clear indication of the grip available at that particular point in time.

You can repeat this test to continually monitor grip in different conditions.

This simple test procedure will indicate the grip level of your tyres and highlight the need for correct 3PMSF winter tyres for safer winter driving.

AT All-Terrain M+S tyre

HOW FUTURE REGULATIONS MAY AFFECT ME? Any forthcoming regulation changes are likely to include a requirement that snow chains comply with the European ON-V5117 standard and snow/winter tyres be identified with the 3PMSF symbol as per the ECE 117.02 snow test.Tyres with M+S marking are not associated to any mandatory traction test and there is no performance guarantee associated with M+S marked tyres.

In Germany the old rules have been tightened and the M+S logo no longer suffices. Only tyres with the Snowflake logo (3PMSF) comply with their new regulations. Motorists in Germany have a legal obligation to fit winter tyres on their vehicles.

M+S TYRES EXPLAINED The M+S symbol on tyres is very misleading. It’s a declaration from the tyre manufacturer that the product can operate in mud and snow better than their regular models. However, there is no performance standard or traction/stopping tests to pass as the M+S designation refers only to the tread pattern.

You will find the M+S symbol on off-road,All-Terrain (AT) tyres and on many ‘summer’ all season tyres. Even some high speed rated (Y) summer tyres may have this designation. It says nothing about the tyres rubber compound and how it will perform on snow, slush and ice.

Tyres with M+S marking are not associated with any mandatory performance test and there is no performance guarantee associated with M+S marked tyres.The M+S marking are based on a tyre’s geometry and not how well it does on tests actually driving in mud or snow.

Art show on Buller a success RECENTLY the launch of a stunning exhibition from talented photographers Katie Carmichael and Sue Clemenger capturing beautiful Mt Buller was held, reeling in a large crowd of locals and tourists.

“I use my camera as a tool to explore the relentless power and rhythms in nature and its emotive qualities that take us to a place that allows us to reflect, to dream and to pause,” said Katie Carmichael, who has recently decided to pursue her creative interest in photography as a solo artist.

Sue Clemenger has been a regular visitor to Mt Buller for almost a decade, and along with her love of skiing, she has developed a love for photography.

“With my camera I like to interpret the things I see in a minimal way, simplifying and reducing the ‘noise’ in my environment,” Sue said.

“I am inspired by the detail in things that often go unnoticed or unappreciated, and find beauty in the every day.”

Mt Buller, light up Australia for blood cancer THE Leukaemia Foundation is calling for volunteers in Mt Buller to support local families affected by blood cancer by hosting a Light The Night event this October.

In Australia, more than 60,000 people are living with a blood cancer including leukaemia, myeloma, lymphoma and every day another 35 people are diagnosed.

The Leukaemia Foundation’s Light The Night is the only event in Australia that brings together the blood cancer community including patients, families, friends, carers and medical professionals to support each other, while raising vital funds for research to beat blood cancer.

Now in its 11th year, the inspiring event includes a

beautiful evening lantern ceremony and walk which will be held in around 140 locations across Australia.

Bill Petch, Leukaemia Foundation chief executive officer, said sadly, most of us know someone who’s been affected by blood cancer.

It is one of Australia’s most prolific cancers and unfortunately diagnoses rates are on

the rise.

The Leukaemia Foundation supports families in the Mt Buller area through services such as emotional support, education, accommodation during the weeks and months of treatment in the city, as well as transport to and from chemotherapy – all at no cost.

“As well as giving the community the chance to come

together and walk in solidarity, hosting a Light The Night event is a rewarding way to show your support and help to raise funds to ensure local families affected by blood cancer receive the support they need,” said Mr Petch.

Everyone who registers to attend a Light The Night event will be able to select the colour lantern that represents

their place in the blood cancer community: Gold – to remember a lost loved one; Blue – to show support; White – to signify your own blood cancer journey.
