Mt Buller and world surfing photographer Tony Harrington of The Photo Shop (Mt Buller) took Olympic skier Anton Grimus to the very top of the mountain for a one-on-one photo shoot recently. This magnificent shot – taken late in the afternoon as the sun started setting – portrays good snow and wonderful skiing from the very summit of Buller. MT BULLER has continued to experience very strong visitation across the 2016 winter season, and to date the resort has welcomed more than 200,000 visitors, which is 27 per cent above the 10-year average for this time of the season. “These high levels of day visitation has meant that additional transport has been required to ensure visitors can be transported safely to and from the Village, and additional staff have also been put on to assist customers around the resort,”

Attentive Staff

said Mt Buller Mt Stirling RMB chief executive officer John Huber. “We have had these additional services in place since the first big days were experienced, and will do so as far we see similar numbers of guests visiting the resort. “As Mt Buller continues to grow in visitation year on year and demographics change there are new and unique challenges facing the resort, which will see us investigating ways to meet customers’ needs via a range of initiatives,” John said. As the season continues so does the fun on the mountain.

Convenient Location

Last weekend saw the annual Light Up The Night lantern ski run down Bourke Street all for a good cause. Bourke Street lit up as hundreds of skiers and snowboarders carried coloured lanterns down the popular ski run during the annual ‘Light the Night’ event. In the first ‘Light the Night’ event in Australia in 2016, the Mt Buller community came together to raise funds and awareness of blood cancer. In overcast conditions lantern holders made their way down Bourke Street, providing participants and spectators with

an uplifting and visually stunning event. Light the Night is the Leukaemia Foundation’s annual fundraising event to help more Australians beat blood cancer by improving survival rates and quality of life. Coming up next week are the Interschools Alpine and Moguls events where thousands of school children take part in racing in all disciplines of snow sports - competing at all levels. And there is still more to come as winter entertainment just gets better at Buller. Visitors can enjoy live enter-

HARRO IN THE SNOW: Tony Harrington imparts some great hints on shooting those fantastic pics in the snow.

Shooting in the snow tips from Harro

INTERNATIONALLY renowned, award-winning and legendary big mountain and surf photographer Tony Harrington this season took up winter residence on Mt Buller opening The Photo Shop (formerly Fun Photos) and providing a world class photography service in the resort. Taking good photos in the snow comes with some challenges so we asked Tony “Harro” Harrington for some tips on how we might make our own photos better this winter. “Taking photos in the snow can be tricky but after doing it for years, and learning the hard way, I’m happy to share a few basics for winter shooting that I hope will help you get some better shots to remember your time in the snow,” Harro said. 1. Make sure your batteries are fully charged before you head out - even the healthiest of batteries will crumble in the cold. 2. Take a spare battery and keep it buried deep inside the layers of your clothing where

it will keep warm - not in an outer pocket. 3 Hand-warmer sachets are sold in many ski shops and help boost battery life. 4. Gloves can be a burden, but a necessity to a photographer in the snow. If possible wear gloves that have ‘peel back’ finger tips so you can access the controls. Gloves that are fur lined are often the clumsiest as wet fingers get caught up trying to get them back into the gloves. I like to use large ‘shell’ style gloves, sometimes with a thin liner underneath, as they are easier to pull on and off quickly even if your hands are slightly damp. 5. Blowing snow, sleet, rain and mist will often coat a lens within seconds. I like to use a soft chamois to lightly wipe over a lens and make it dry again, at least for the instant while I get my next shot. Don’t use your glove/jumper. You’ll only smear and scratch your lens. 6. When you come inside, especially from sub-zero tem-

peratures into a warm lodge, your camera will go through some temperature shock which isn’t good for it. Take a plastic bag with you and before you go, wipe down your camera, take the SD card out and then place the camera in the bag. Now you can bring it inside and because it has some cold air around it the temperature change will be more gradual. Do not place it near a heater, a boot room or entryway is probably best where the temperature is slightly cooler and it can warm slowly over a couple of hours. Shooting in the snow can be very rewarding and very frustrating. “My crew at The Photo Shop here on Mt Buller are professionally trained and somewhat gluttons for punishment when it comes to our chosen vocation which often involves long cold days on the hill, but we know how to take a good photograph, whether it be kids, families, racers, action or portraits and we are stoked to make a profes-

sional memory of your visit to our resort,” Tony said. Tony’s equipment of choice is the Nikon D500 for action, D610 for family and portrait work and D810 for landscape. The lenses you’ll most likely find in his backpack are the 14-24mm, 24-70mm, 70200mm and 200-500mm. Drop into The Photo Shop next time you are at Mt Buller and he’d be happy to chat with you about your photography questions. From surf to snow with Peter ‘Joli’ Wilson

LEGENDARY surf photographer Peter ‘Joli’ Wilson is coming to Mt Buller. Peter is one of the most esteemed surf photographers in the world working with such greats as Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning, Andy Irons and a host of the best surfers spanning a career of over 40 years. Nikon is proud to present Peter in a ‘Talk Story’ type evening with a short film about him showcasing some of his work on the big screen and a Q&A opportunity for the audience. Following Peter’s presentation, the most recent Nikon Surf Film of the Year titled “Cluster” by Kai Neville will also be screened at the Alpine cinema. Kai has four major surf movies that have won accolades around the world, including two x “Surfer Poll Best Surf movie”. The Photo Shop (Mt Buller) has brought aboard a class team of photographers to document each and every skier and boarder in the Victorian Interschools. “We are stoked not only to create the best images of everyone racing, but also to inspire everyone through educational talks, photography and movies on the big screen during the Interschools week,” said

Peter ‘Joli’ Wilson was found at Bells Beach, Torquay in the late 60s with a camera in his hand, with his dual signature of blade-sharp surf-

ing action, lifestyle and travel imagery, and has been a pillar of the surf media for the last four decades. “My first surfing image published was Narrabeen’s Col Smith at the 1972 Bells Beach Easter Surfing Contest in the now defunct ‘Breakout’ Surfing Magazine,” he said. “In the mid 1970s I landed a job as an assistant photographer with the Australian Defence Department. “My training included studio work, lighting, flash, B&W processing and printing. “My German mentor told me that if I wanted to be a photographer it had to be for ‘love’ not ‘money’. “Now years later he may have been right about the money, I still love what I do. “In 1989 I went freelance and with my wife Jan, we formed Joli Productions. “For the past 25 years I’ve travelled the world capturing the world’s oceans, landscapes, beaches, surfing action, cultures and lifestyles.” He’s currently senior contributor to just about every major surf magazine you can think of, and a couple more on top of that. Peter’s work has been exhibited in France, Hawaii, Brazil and Australia and has won numerous awards.

FAMILY FUN: Mansfield families are being encouraged to get out and explore their Mount Buller backyard.

PHOTO: MT Buller

Mansfield families can enjoy Mount Buller on a budget By RHYLL McCORMACK FOR those who are not born and bred in Mansfield, the idea of a family outing to Mount Buller can be a daunting prospect. The parking, the rentals, the chains and the money – it can all add up to be a costly day out, particularly for those with children in tow. Living close to the mountain often means additional visitors over winter, all of whom want to get up to Mt Buller and experience the snow without breaking the bank. “I have three kids but haven’t been to Buller yet, as I’m not a skier myself,” one local mother explained. “I have no idea where to even begin – I thought I would just let the kids go up with their school, and when we have visitors we let them sort it out for themselves.”

The team at Mount Buller have come up with a range of tips to help local families experience their back yard. “Borrow gear from friends and take advantage of things like the local buy/swap/sell and school sales to get ski gear for your kids,” Buller Ski Lifts PR and communications manager, Rhylla Morgan, said. “Explore early and late season - June and September - when there are discounted lift passes and packages on offer. “There are also good online only deals like $80 Thursdays which are good value and ideal if you can pop up outside the weekend periods.” Mt Buller Ski Lifts also offer a Six-Day Anyday pass, at a saving of almost $150, meaning the purchaser can ski or board for six days at their discretion. For families wanting to give

skiing a go, but not wanting to outlay the lift ticket prices, night skiing is a great option. Held every Wednesday and Saturday night from 5pm until the end of August, the Bourke Street chairlift is lit up under the night sky – and at only $22 a ticket, the skiing is affordable. Other ways to reduce the cost, Rhylla said, was to ski with friends. “Car pool or take advantage of the local bus lines to get up and down to the resort economically, and if you buy your resort entry online there is a discount.” Mount Stirling offers cross country skiing, but with no associated lift tickets it is a great first time outing for those just wanting to experience the snow. Likewise, consider travelling to the resorts during the week for less congested slopes and better deals. Kate Monahan, Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resorts media and communications officer, said there was something for everyone on mountain, even those who weren’t looking to strap on skis. “There is so much to do both on and off the snow, that you’ll be spoilt for choice,” she said. “On the snow, choose from skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing and snowshoeing, while off the snow you can catch a movie at the cinema, hit the indoor rock climbing wall, pat a Husky, head out in search of gnomes with the Gnome Roam map and much more.” It doesn’t matter if you want to toboggan, snowboard, ski or sight see, Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort wants local residents to experience all that’s on offer. Gems from the Museum Store BY MICHELLE STEVENSON, Curator NAMA

KOFLER’S SUITCASE: With all his worldly possessions packed into this small brown suitcase, Helmut Kofler migrated to Australia and forged the way for skiers on Mt Buller. His suitcase, a legacy to his adventurous spirit is also in the museum collection.

FOR many reasons museums can never display all their objects at once. Here (at Mt Buller’s National Alpine Museum of Australia) I share some of my favourite objects currently resting in the museum’s store room. Mt Buller has many legends but one of the earliest was Helmut Kofler. Kofler migrated to Melbourne from his native Austria with his wife, Maria, in September 1927. The museum has Kofler’s suitcase in the collection – small, brown and slightly tattered it’s not much to look at, and I often wonder what essential items and prized possessions Helmut chose to bring with him to Australia and what was left behind? Born in Klagenfurt, Austria in 1900 Kofler was an amateur skiing, diving and rowing champion, but came to Australia to teach swimming and diving at Portsea. However, his skiing prowess was clearly important to him, as he brought his skiing medals with him. With the summer season over, Helmut and Maria spent their first Australian winter managing the Hotham Heights Chalet. The couple then moved to the newly built Mt Buller Chalet for the winter of 1929. They were the first to bring

Keeping our winters cool is no rubbish THE unique Living Bin program, food recycling within the alpine resorts has continued for the 2016 winter season. The program operates in North East Victoria including at Mt Buller/Mt Stirling, Falls Creek and Mt Hotham. The program involves the separation and collection of food waste from businesses, lodges and apartments during the peak, winter season (and at Mt Buller, year-round). The material is then transferred to specialised containers and sent to an organics processing facility. Within 50 days the food waste goes from food scraps to beautiful, rich compost. A joint initiative between 4SITE Australia P/L, the North East Waste and Resource Recovery Group and the Alpine Resorts, Living Bin first began as a trial in 2010 (partially funded with the support of a Sustainability Victoria TZW grant). The success of that original trial has seen the ongoing collection and processing of food waste at each of the alpine resorts continue as part of waste management operations each peak season.

The results of the Living Bin program speak volumes, collectively since the beginning of the program 400 tonnes of food waste, which otherwise would have been sent to landfill, has been composted. The results demonstrate that the alpine resorts are playing their part in protecting their sensitive environments and keeping winters cool. Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management environmental services manager Louise Perrin explained: “When food waste ends up in landfill it releases harmful gases which contribute to climate change, food waste is the largest contributor to Victoria’s carbon footprint. “In terms of eliminating carbon emissions keeping food waste out of landfill is one of the best ways to positively influence climate change.” The Living Bin program is unique for several reasons: it is the first program of its kind in Australia to both establish an organics diversion system in alpine areas, and trial the viability of on-site organics processing. These major achievements demonstrate that organic waste in Australian alpine areas can be dealt with when industry, resort management and government work in partnership.

0DQVILHOG OPENING HOURS Monday - Thursday 6:30am - 9:00pm Friday - Saturday - Sunday 6:30am - 12 midnight The fact that the program operates in major tourist destinations throughout peak season with a highly transient population, with fluctuations of material volumes and type, present particularly unique challenges. The Living Bin program demonstrates what can be achieved when leaders are prepared to pioneer ideas and work collaboratively to achieve specific outcomes. Similarly, the fact that all participants in the program are voluntary, and mostly businesses, is also unique to the program. Anyone wishing to participate in the Living Bin program this season can contact their environmental officer through their Alpine Resort Management Office.

European style hospitality to the mountain, a tradition which continues to this day. Kofler regularly returned to Europe to keep up with the latest ski fashions, techniques and ideas and was often quoted in the papers of the day. Charismatic, always a showman, full of enthusiasm and ideas he led the clearing of several ski runs at Buller, the first being Shakey Knees. Although it was longer than the Shakey Knees we know today and the alignment was slightly different. The museum holds a photo of Kofler skiing on Shakey Knees, sliding down the hill in a graceful arabesque dressed only in a singlet and underwear; revealing that his showmanship and pride in his skiing skills weren’t without foundation. Even today it would take a skilled skier to strike that pose. Sadly Helmut’s life ended at age 40 in a tragic accident at the Delatite Sawmills along with his new (and pregnant) wife architect and skier Peg Wilks. Helmut and Maria had divorced in 1939 and she had returned to Austria. However, Kofler’s legacy lives on in the restaurant named after him, the runs he helped create and the pieces of his life he valued enough to bring to Australia as well as those created here that are now in the museum’s collection.

The Guardian - safer motoring, safer education working Towards Zero

Command approached Monash University to identify some of the safest vehicles available in Australia so we could promote the future of vehicle safety,” he said. “As a result we formed a partnership with Mercedes Benz to promote the future of vehicle safety. “If every vehicle in Australia was fitted with the technology found in this vehicle road trauma could be reduced by a third overnight. “To achieve this in the future, we need to change the way industry and households purchase a vehicle and start making safety a standard feature, not an optional extra.” Although the vehicle is priced way beyond the ordinary

driver’s cheque book, the safety features are exemplary. Among its features are attention assist, tiptronic plus with steering assist and stop and go pilot. Its ‘active lane assist’ ensures drivers are made aware if they drift over the centre white line or off to the left of the lane - it automatically slows, gives an indication to correct through its steering wheel allowing the driver to correct steering quickly, possibly avoiding accidents. It comes with a parking package with 360-degree camera, active parking assist with Parktronic, LED daytime running lights, acceleration skid control and electronic traction system.

Among its super safety features are the pre-safe brake with pedestrian recognition and pre-safe plus for rear end collisions. Ideal for driving in High Country conditions it also features crosswind assist, is four wheel drive and has an adaptive brake with hold function, hill start assist and brake drying in wet conditions. The list of safety features goes on and on - a car that features just so much you feel you could set the GPS and let it drive itself to your destination. The vehicle is on the market for those who can afford one but beware with a top speed of 320km/h, unless you set your cruise control to the correct speed, and you feel you want to ‘try out top speed’ - you will get caught by police. With its smart looks, fantastic features and the ability to turn heads wherever it goes, you will be more noticeable than other motorists. Sgt McLachlan said while the current police Mercedes ‘super car’ is working around the Mansfield district it will be ‘on duty’ for highway patrol but officers on duty will be more than willing to impart its safety features, especially to anyone looking to purchase a ‘safe’ vehicle.

The Dolomites Mountains of northern Italy are a revelation to Australians. Here, it is truly possible to ski as far as the eye can see! You and your friends or family can ski together, over long distances, and through many different ski resorts. It's the ski holiday of a lifetime. The variety of runs and challenges is almost daunting, with seemingly countless runs for every type of skier or boarder. You can ski

The Dolomites offer a superb blend of skiing, food, culture and unspoiled alpine beauty. Best of all, it’s still undiscovered by Australians, and it’s all here in the unforgettable Dolomites.

Heli ski expedition creates special bond AMAZING snow memories come in many forms. Some are born locally but play out globally. The sharing of turns in a unique environment can create a very special bond. One such example is our annual Mike Wiegeles heli ski expedition to Blue River, British Columbia in Canada. Chris Canavan and Simon Dickie started the tradition in the mid-90s. The two of them took the leap of faith to join a group from Warren Miller Entertainment in Colorado for a week in the Monashees and Cariboos. They didn’t really know where they were going… only that Kamloops was the initial destination. But what greeted them is best described as Disneyland for adults. The fun starts from the moment you arrive at the lodge. Connecting with old ski buddies from all over the world. And then there are the guides and operational staff from all over. After skiing together for more than a decade, it’s almost considered a family reunion. Food, beverages and accommodation are all six star. But that is not why we come. It’s the snow. Some 18m plus every

year of the lightest, driest powder snow you will find anywhere. Mike Wiegeles set up the operation in 1970 and identified Blue River as having the best snow in Canada. He has been famously quoted as saying the flakes were the biggest he had ever seen, and that they always seem to drop straight down, meaning there was rarely any wind effect. The big thing about Wiegeles is that every turn is a freshie. Knee deep if it is ok, thigh deep if it’s special, and anything beyond that is magical. Of course it is all about the stability of the snow pack. If it’s stable, we aim for shoots, drops and gullies. If it’s less stable, we take on the less risky pitches. But the main focus is always the quality of the snow. From first to last turn every day, everyone skis freshies. Mt Buller has been well represented in our contingent over the years. Chris Canavan has now done 20 Wiegeles trips. I have now enjoyed almost 2M vertical feet with the operation. The annual pilgrimage will generate its next series of memories come late January 2017. And we can’t wait.

IT is not every day that you get to look over a ‘super car’ one that can almost drive itself and could be considered the ‘safest vehicle on four wheels’. But, that is how the Guardian - Victoria Police’s latest designer livery can be described. On loan to Mansfield Highway Patrol for two weeks, the Mercedes - AMG GLE 63 S 4Matic Coupe (pictured) driven by a 6.3 litre twin turbo V8 engine - is the super safe car. Driving through town the vehicle - very nicely and uniquely decorated - turns heads - it is the most impressive police vehicle seen on the state’s roads. Sergeant Marty McLachlan explained that the vehicle is not so much a pursuit car but is here to promote safety in driving, safety in car design and is included in promoting the state’s campaign of aiming for zero road deaths. “Road Policing Command is committed to the Safe Systems principles and while our role as police has traditionally been to educate and protect the community through enforcement, we have a responsibility to do more,” Sgt McLachlan said. “One way we can do this is by promoting safer vehicles. “Last year Road Policing

EACH year during third term of the school year, the Mt Buller Primary School opens - under the auspices of Mansfield Primary School. This winter has 59 students in classes from prep to year 6. The 5/6 students this term have developed their business skills, including research, marketing and financials. They have also all learned to knit. The students are currently madly knitting headbands and scarfs that will be for sale. “It’s a pleasant change to walk into a classroom and see grade 5/6s knitting, said class teacher Lesley Dunlop.

WINNING WAYS: Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin (red vest) sets the pace in the FIS SBX Australia New Zealand Cup (ANC).

Pullin and Brockhoff take out the titles

AUSTRALIAN snowboard cross athletes Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin and Belle Brockhoff have won double titles in the FIS SBX Australia New Zealand Cup (ANC) and the Australian National SBX Championships, beating an international ďŹ eld at Mt Hotham recently. Mt Hotham’s own Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin got two great starts out of the gate in what were two very tight races down the steep and narrow snowboard cross track, ahead of competitors Matthew Thomas (AUS), Michael Perle (USA) and Yoshiki Tahakara (JPN) in the FIS ANC, and an all Australian field against Cameron Bolton, Adam

Lambert and Josh Miller in the Australian Championship. While Belle Brockhoff qualiďŹ ed second and third fastest for the two competitions the day prior, she proved too good against her competitors in the race ďŹ nals, easily taking ďŹ rst over fellow Australians Emily Boyce, Ellise Turner and Swiss Sandra Daniela Gerber in the FIS ANC, and against a similar ďŹ eld in the National Championships with Gerber, Boyce and Annabel Tudhope. There were some spectacular crashes and upsets in both the men’s and women’s rounds. Josh Miller, who had the fastest men’s qualifying time, went out in

the quarter finals after his board was clipped and lost his place in the race, while Sandra Daniela Gerber displayed great sportsmanship as she took a big spill off one of the jumps, losing her position in the race. The groms also showed some great competition, with competitors as young as 10 years old hitting the track, gaining lots of experience alongside the elite athletes. A notable mention goes out to Carter Mills who qualiďŹ ed for his first open men’s FIS event after graduating from the younger groms racing categories where he’s won back-to-back FIS titles in previous years.

Mt Stirling Summit Tree is a living treasure THE Mt Stirling Summit Tree, estimated to be almost 500 years old, is unique. The Mt Stirling Summit Tree was nominated for listing by the Friends of Mt Stirling and the Victorian National Parks Association. Last week it was announced that the Stirling Tree had placed second in the 2016 Victorian Tree of the Year competition. The winner was a Mountain Ash known as the ‘Kalatha Giant’ at Kalatha Creek, Toolangi. This Mountain Ash (Eucalyptus regnans), known as the ‘Kalatha Giant’, is thought to be at least 400 years old, 65 metres tall and the 7th

largest tree in Victoria (by volume). The tree bears a very old scar at its heavily buttressed base (possibly from 1851) and is hollow all the way up its trunk. After the Black Saturday bushfires of 2009, the Toolangi and Castella community constructed a walking trail to the tree - for many, it is a resilient symbol of bushfire survival. The full results for Victorian Tree of the Year were: 1st Mountain Ash known as the ‘Kalatha Giant’ at Kalatha Creek, Toolangi; 2nd Snow Gum, Summit Track, Mount Stirling; 3rd Lemon-scented

Gums, Swanston Street roundabout, Carlton; 4th Golden Elm, Punt Road & Alexandra Avenue, South Yarra; 5th Japanese Maple, The Crescent, Sassafras; 6th Blue Atlas Cedar, Wombat Hill Botanic Garden, Daylesford; 7th Moreton Bay Fig, Werribee Park; 8th Queensland Kauri – Burnley Gardens, Richmond; 9th English Oak, Former Mayday Hills Hospital, Beechworth. The National Trust of Australia (Victoria) has classified more than 20,000 trees in 1200 locations across the state on its Register of Significant Trees.

LIVING TREASURE: The iconic Mt Stirling Summit Tree is now on the National Trust of Australia’s Register of Significant Trees.

TEACHING ON: Former Mt Buller snowboarding champion Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin is passing on his skills and tips to the next generation of snowboarders. Chumpy recently concluded an exciting program at Hotham Alpine Resort to find the next Australian Winter Olympic hopefuls. After winning gold at the Snowboard Cross World Championship in Barcelona earlier this year, Chumpy returned to his home slopes (now Hotham) to kick off his brand new project aimed at bringing through the next generation of Aussie snowboarding stars. In partnership with Red Bull, Chumpy launched ‘Chumpy’s Boarding House’, a mentoring program that will give eight outstanding young Australian talents the chance to learn what it takes to make it on the pro circuit. Having spent almost a decade at the top of his sport, the young hopefuls benefited from his insight and perspective on what it takes to make it both on and off the slopes – from board skills through to nutrition, fitness and career development.’Chumpy’s Boarding House’ finished up on August 11. Mt Buller Trades & Services...

Sales boom will lead to Buller building boom Alpine said Buller sales have broken all alpine sales records since forever. “Eight of the 13 chalets have been sold and we are experiencing up to 150 enquiries a week on the remaining five sites left,” John said this week. Prices for the chalets sold ranged from $1.35 million to

$1.55m – which has broken all alpine sales records. “The top end of the market is going extremely well at present which also reflects on those that may now consider to middle and lower brackets of the market,” John said. “We also know as a result of a very large marketing campaign there is significant amount of secondary stock sold on the mountain – purely because the top end of the market has given perspective to a lot of other purchases. “But these chalets are just exquisite – people like them because they are ‘ski-in – skiout’ and ‘drive-in – drive-out’ and are placed at the highest point which can be built on at Buller. “They have the most gobsmacking views on the mountain – no other buildings are like these on the mountain; and their views cannot be obstructed by other developments.” The sale of eight chalets will mean a building boom on Buller this summer and a boom for local tradies who Castrans have said they will employ where possible. “The reason it (the boom) is occurring is there is little or no doubt Mt Buller is the premier ski mountain in Australia for real estate - and purely because of its ease of accessibility to Melbourne,” John said.

Michael was well known on Mt Buller as a respected former chef at Cattlemen’s, the ABOM and the Chalet and more recently owner of The Mill Inn at Sawmill Settlement. He owned and operated The Mill Inn for four years introducing to his patrons authentic Italian cuisine. At the beginning of the 2015 snow season he sold the restaurant business to return to his home city of Adelaide to look after his ageing parents. Michael’s sudden death came as a shock to many of his friends and family. Friend Peter Lynn said Michael will be missed by all who knew him.

Mt Buller property news... Strong sales calls for more demand - ideal time for first time buyers MARK Adams of Mark Adams Real Estate reports he has had multiple properties either sold or under offer on Mt Buller since the start of the 2016 season. “There has been a large increase in activity due to the pent up demand and properties being priced at the current market value,” Mark said. “The good season and large visitation has been a good boost.” Mark says he has been working very hard to assist his clients looking to buy for the first time or upscale their existing one. “Many buyers also have mentioned summer usage in their decision making as well as winter rental to assist them in financing the properties,” Mark said. Banks traditionally lend 50 per cent on alpine leases, however, you can borrow the whole purchase price with additional security.” Mark can assist you in the understanding of alpine leases and refer you to experienced solicitors and bankers. “Though the process may seem daunting it’s really quite simple to follow and execute,” Mark said.

“And because of the large volume of sales Mark Adams Real Estate now urgently requires new listings to satisfy demand.” Mark is happy to offer free appraisals, advice and support you throughout the process from start to finish. He has many satisfied clients who have provided testimonials on his newly released website. Mark’s motto “Leading The Way” says it all.

“Those looking for their own space apart from the large living area with northerly views and balcony can enjoy the second living/media room with its own kitchenette,” he said. “With all the bedrooms having an ensuite, getting ready in the morning could not be easier.” Priced at only $1,150,000 (or nearest offer) the value is hard to beat and it has two garage parking spaces included.

COSY: The living area of K2 6 is comfortable and cosy giving warmth in winter and coolness in summer - perfect all year round.

ALPINE BLISS: Experienced real estate advisor, Mark Adams, is in his blissful heaven - not quite heavenly Buller but definitely closer to the real heaven at an overseas resort.

PICTURE PERFECT: K2 6 apartment is set in a ‘picture perfect’ alpine setting nestled among the snow gums but still retaining magnificent views.

One of the company’s newly listed properties K2 6 is a perfect choice for multiple families as it offers five bedrooms with five ensuites and two car parks. “Those looking for a central location would be very happy as K2 is close to everything, whether you have young children or teenagers,” Mark said. Designed over three levels and some 230 square metres, when size matters this property wins.

IMPRESSIVE: The exterior of the Snowflake apartments is welcoming to all.

Spring is perfect for buying on Buller SPRING is almost upon us with some of the wildflowers already starting to poke their buds up – so what better time to look for a holiday apartment, rental proposition or even consider full time living in an alpine setting than now. Michael David and Mark ‘Woody’ Woodsford are ready to show you around Victoria’s favourite winter playground. This season has been exceptional with the number of visitors to the ski field with accommodation booked out most weekends. So why not look for an investment, one that you can use for yourself and when the family do not need it consider renting it out, getting back some of that investment. With the mountain also becoming more popular in summer for mountain bikers, hikers and just visitors to the cooler climate when the heat hits, Mr Buller is fast becoming an all year round resort with rental propositions required throughout summer. Currently RT Edgar has available for sale Snowflake 2

- very reasonably priced at just $390,000+. This wonderfully comfortable and well maintained two bedroom apartment is located on the ground floor in the Snowflake building. A fully optioned kitchen and dining, and a lounge area complete with two big leather couches for relaxing after a hard day on the slopes. Of the two bedrooms, one has a queen sized bed while the second has two bunks with one a double/single combo, sleeping a total of seven. Both bedrooms have builtin robes. There is a bathroom and all heating and hot water are included in the annual fees. To cap off this spotless apartment is the on-site parking by permit. At this price, inspection is a must. Call Mark Woodsford on 0429 930 700 or Michael David on 0408 508 609 for further information and properties.

LOCATION, LOCATION: K2 apartments are nestled on the side of the mountain adjacent to the village, toboggan rink, the Alpine Chapel and so much more.

WARM & COSY: The living area of Snowflake 2 is warm, comfortable and relaxing for those enjoying a skiing or summer break.

KITCHEN COMFORTS: The kitchen area of Snowflake 2 although not huge - is big enough to accommodate a cook up for the whole family plus visitors.

Mogul Ski World SPECIALISING IN SNOW HOLIDAYS

MOGUL’S TIPS ON HOW TO SAVE ON YOUR NEXT FAMILY SNOW HOLIDAY Family snow holidays are one of the most fun holidays you can have. Mogul Ski World have put together some great ideas to help you save on your next family snow adventure that means you can still hit the slopes and still have some money left in your pocket for après ski! But don’t dilly dally as many of these tips and deals finish on 31 August.

SKI RENTAL

LIFT PASSES

With the average size of the Australian house 243m2 we are all used to having enough room to swing a snow leopard. But if you are travelling with young kids why not look at taking a 1 bedroom with the kids sharing the pull out sofa bed. Got bigger kids – then think about properties that offer 1 bedroom plus den or loft rooms, these are always priced better than a 2 bedroom and often have better bedding options.

Look for airlines that offer child fares. Usually the airlines consider a child to be an adult when they turn 12 years old, however Air Canada are offering child fares for all kids 16 years and under. Hurry though as these expire at the end of August.

Save the expense of buying equipment each year for your growing brood and rent the latest gear each trip. These resorts throw in the kids rental for free when you rent your gear. CANADA – Whistler, Sun Peaks, Marmot Basin JAPAN – Hakuba. USA – Aspen Snowmass give the kids a FREE lift pass when they rent their skis or snowboards.

There are numerous resorts that offer kids ski free with a paying adult so the trick is to choose the resort that gives the best value for your family. KIDS 12 AND UNDER SKI FREE CANADA – Whistler, Sun Peaks, Big White, Silver Star, Kicking Horse, Fernie, Kimberley, Marmot Basin, Banff & Lake Louise. USA – Keystone, Steamboat, Copper Mountain. JAPAN – Niseko in March, Furano KIDS 14 AND UNDER SKI FREE USA – Jackson Hole KIDS 18 AND UNDER SKI FREE CANADA – Panorama

TRANSFERS Some resorts offer kids 12 and under to ride free, Whistler is one of these. Some only charge a nominal amount, fly into Eagle and the kids transfer through to Vail for just $1.00USD.
