Spring arrives with fun on the mountain

MT BULLER has turned up the fun this September, as the resort celebrates the arrival of Spring.

September is known for iconic Spring events including the ABOM Mogul Challenge, the Subaru Australian Interschools Championships, the very colourful ‘80s Day as well as the popular Corona Extra Pond Skim National Championships.

Mt Buller also revisited the neon-coloured glory days of the 1980s, with its annual ‘80s Day celebrations.

The Corona Extra Pond Skim National Championships return to Mt Buller for the second time on Saturday, September 19.

Spectators will enjoy seeing participants dressed in crazy costumes skim across a temporary dam on Bourke Street, taking on silly stunts to get from one side of the dam to the other.

Celebrations will continue with après drinks and a barbecue at the Corona Beer Garden on Bourke Street, with an after party kicking on into the evening at Moosehead.

Visitor numbers steady but lower at Mt Buller AS spring arrived at Mt Buller visitor numbers remained steady across all snow fields in the state rising by one per cent from the previous year.

At Mt Buller, however, numbers dropped slightly (by 9 per cent) but at Mt Stirling an 18 per cent increase was seen.

The total number of visitors to Mt Buller so far this season has seen 267,836 people head to the snow and 5415 to Mt Stirling – not bad for a late season.

Visitor days for Buller are

408,591 while Stirling has seen a rise of some 18 per cent with 6858 visitors on the trails.

Across all snowfields more than 1.18 million people have skied or snowboarded this season, up by one per cent from last year.

Visitor days, however, are just on 1.2 million but are still down by six per cent from the previous year.

With school holidays almost upon us it is hoped that numbers will rise and at least equal those of the previous season.

Partying with the gold stars THE inaugural year of the OWIA Gold Party was held at the Moosehead Bar, ABOM on August 22 with a turnout of more than 200 guests from the Mt Buller community.

OWIA changed its format of fundraising this year in an endeavour to include a wider portion of the community - moving away from the formal dinner held over past years.

was held this year on Burnt Hut Spur with 22 special school students participating. In its third year, the event was again very successful, once again providing the opportunity for school aged children with a disability to train and compete in the Interschools. The race followed two days of a preparation camp run by Disabled Wintersports Australia (DWA) which operates a Resort Services Program at Mt Buller throughout the season.

Prior to the Gold Party athletes also participated in an Olympic Athlete Kids’ Forum for the Mt Buller Club Programs at ABOM. This event included a Q&A with the OWIA athletes, the opportunity for club program athletes to ask questions, take autographs and pictures.

The initiative was embraced by the Mt Buller club program community.

MT BULLER enjoyed a special screening of a unique surf documentary on September 4 when Tony Harrington presented his latest film “iON the Barrel Vol. 2” at the Mt Buller cinema.

“Harro” is well known for his photography and film work in the ski world but began his photography career in surf and has never shaken his passion for chasing waves.

He has been travelling and filming for the past two years, from Hawaii to

California and Indonesia then road-tripping thousands of miles across the Nullarbor and back – documenting the whole adventure.

The result is a film packed with awe-inspiring waves and plenty of great stories from along the road.

“The film has the barrel at its heart; it’s the “Holy Grail” for surfers and what keeps us searching, and what drives me to make these films,” explains Harro.

“It’s also celebration of the characters, the wild

places and the stories we find along the road which makes it richer and gives it wide appeal.”

“We scored one of the most solid winters at Hawaii’s Pipeline in memory, one of the biggest sessions I’ve witnessed at ‘Jaws’ (Maui) in five years, a perfect morning at Mavericks (California) and stunning days in wild and remote NW and South Australia.

“I love being able to combine my obsessions for surf and snow and bring these amazing waves to

share with friends here in the mountains,” explained Harro.

Harro is currently negotiating a further viewing of the film at a venue in Mansfield for the near future. iON the Barrel Vol 2 is the second film in a trilogy and Tony is now editing the third this winter at Mt Buller.

CONSTRUCTION will begin this summer on a brand new development on Mt Buller.

Buller Ski Lifts welcomes new marketing manager With extensive marketing experience in a wide range of industries, Jacinta brings a breadth of knowledge and skills to the business.

“Marketing and skiing have both been very important parts of my life for many years,” she said.

John was on a whirlwind tour of Mansfield and took time out to take in some fun on the slopes – along with local Merrijig residents and business folk Sean and Jody Gannon.

John appeared at the Mansfield Armchair Cinema on the Monday night for a premiere showing of his latest film which also features actress Kaarin Fairfax.

Nick Reeves awarded the Ultimate Buller Champ BULLER Ski Lifts (BSL) recently recognised its most outstanding team members for season 2015 at an exclusive dinner, held at the Mt Buller Chalet Hotel.

The event was a tribute to the efforts of team members who were nominated as “Buller Champs” throughout the course of the season.

Some 16 team members were recognised as Buller Champs, with the ultimate accolade of “Champ of Champs” awarded to mountain legend, Nick Reeves.

General manager of BSL Laurie Blampied said Reeves was the obvious winner and it was a unanimous decision to crown him the ultimate champ.

“Nick is a person who epito-

mises the Buller Way, and is an architect of our approach to customer service.

He lives and breathes the mountain and excellent customer service.

Nick is a great friend to everyone on this mountain, and there was no doubt in anyone’s mind that he should be the Buller Champ for 2015,” Laurie said.

Reeves, who has been a member of the Mt Buller community for 31 years and now oversees lift operations, humbly accepted the award and the glowing comments from other team members.

He emphasised the importance of making sure everyone in the resort felt special, whether they are staff or guests.

“People come to Mt Buller and want to feel special – I measure my success on how many thank yous I get per day.

“If you try hard, you can get up to 100, but it’s not hard to get even five in a few minutes.

“The best thing about working at Mt Buller is the interconnectedness between the staff.”

“This place keeps me young – even though I’ve gone bald from ducking rope lines,” the avid backcountry skier joked.

The Buller Champs awards are now in their fourth year and give team members and managers a way of formally recognising the efforts of their peers and thanking them for their hard work.

End of season maintenance - Post-season and Pre-season preparation...

The wax is not scraped off as this protects the ski base from oxidisation and rust on the edges while they are stored in a cool dry place.

A quick scrape and brush is all they will need before I next hit the slopes.

Having this process done at the end of the season not only protects your skis but is more cost efficient than just waxing and leaving the tuning to the beginning of next season.

At Bumps we repair, tune and wax all our rental skis and boards in October so they are stored and ready to go for the following winter.

If you’re lucky enough to be heading overseas for the northern winter and are taking skis with you I would be tuning my skis specifically for the conditions where I’m going.

In Australia we tend to need a coarser structure ground into the base for our wetter conditions, particularly in the spring.

The colder conditions of Japan, North America or Europe require a much finer structure in the base to perform well.

I also usually have my skis waxed multiple times, up to six times, so that while I’m away I don’t need to wax them very much.

SPRING is well and truly upon us.

We’re all going to have heaps of fun in the sun until the lifts finally close for the season.

Just as Buller Ski Lifts go into maintenance mode for the off-season, we need to do the same with our ski and boarding gear.

The first thing I do at the end of our winter season is to pull my liners and footbeds out of my boot shells so they can dry out properly.

Once dry and put back together, the buckles are done up and stored in my boot bag in a cool, dry place.

A damp laundry, the garden shed or hot attic space is not a good storage solution as I’ve seen a few customers with liners that have been eaten by rodents or have gone mouldy.

Next I get my skis ready for my next trip to the snow.

I have them repaired, tuned and waxed ready for either our next winter or for my next OS trip.

Corn Hill Road: truly an undiscovered XC treasure

By CHARLES STREET HAVING skied cross country (XC) in many places, we decided to try one of the lesser known areas of wilderness close to Melbourne.

Leaving the Horse Hill car park, our small band of intrepid cross country skiers turned left at the Skating Rink and walked out along the Corn Hill Road.

Where the snow began, we met two teams of huskies, eager to work.

The snow was firm, and consistently more than deep enough for XC skiing.

Although it was a mostly sunny day, we soon found ourselves in the shadow of Corn Hill.

There was persistent winter

shade along much of Corn Hill Road, which certainly helps with snow retention.

As we skied down the gentle slope from Picnic Table to The Quarry, we were swiftly overtaken by the husky dog sled teams, obviously excited at having a good run.

One team turned back to investigate me taking photos.

I laughed.

I think the dogs were laughing too.

Along the way there were magnificent views of The Bluff and many more mountains to the south, all covered in snow.

Little rivulets gurgled among the snow covered bushes along the side of the road, adding to the serenity of the landscape.

After a hearty lunch at The Quarry, we skied onwards down the Corn Hill Trail.

There was now a different panorama to the east.

This time, from snowy Mount Koonika to Mount Magdala, in the Alpine National Park.

The Crosscut Saw is certainly spectacular in the winter.

No tracks on this section of the Corn Hill Trail; just deep, smooth and firm snow.

We wanted to keep going, but time was against us, so we skied back up that gentle slope, exhilarated by the great snow, the spectacular scenery, and a thrilling adventure.

Corn Hill Road is highly recommended, but due to remoteness you must be pre-

pared.

Downhill skis and snowboards are unsuitable.

You will need robust backcountry XC skis, layers of warm clothing, food, water, fellow travellers, and something waterproof to sit on.

Snow permitting, you can continue skiing down to Howqua Gap where there is an emergency shelter, then onwards to Telephone Box Junction on Mount Stirling.

Always tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.

Although it is not groomed, as a XC adventure the Corn Hill Road is an easy ski, with rewarding vistas and a “get away from it all” refreshing natural ambience.

LOVE was in the air at Mt Buller last week, when lift operator Graham “Birdman” Mear (25) popped the question to ski instructor girlfriend, Amity Wilson (28).

Known for his enthusiasm and cheerful nature across the mountain, Canadian native Birdman pulled out all the stops for the extravagant proposal.

Amity was fooled into thinking she was required at the top of the ABOM Express Chairlift to participate in one of the resort’s snow reports, only to find the words “will you marry me Amity” hanging from the lift towers as she neared the pinnacle.

It all resulted in her skiing off the chairlift to find Birdman on one knee, with the stunning Mt Buller summit as a backdrop.

Of course, Amity’s answer was yes.

Amity and Birdman met while working in the Canadian ski resort of Sun Peaks; she was hesitant at first but his persistence paid off and they moved to Amity’s home country of Australia earlier this year.

Super junior race series at Mt Buller MOUNT Buller Race Club (MBRC) played host to the second leg of the Australian Children’s Championships at Mt Buller on September 4 to 6.

The Giant Slalom was held on Friday, followed by the Slalom on Saturday and the Skier Cross on Sunday.

The races at Mt Buller were held in excellent conditions and on courses that were extremely well run by MBRC coaches and staff and the race and events department of Buller Ski Lifts.

The GS and SL were held on ďŹ rm snow in brilliant sunshine but the SX was a little more challenging with some fog, but this did not deter from the competitive and safe racing and running of the race on Sunday.

Mt Buller athletes were very well presented at the podium, picking up 28 medals.

All athletes had a great experience and this was one of the best race series in recent years held at Mt Buller and showcased Mt Buller to everyone.

Well done to all.

In the week prior to the race series at Mt Buller, MBRC had its awards night and local athlete Warwick Crawford was awarded the coveted AL Guss excellence award.

This award recognises ‘Effort, Results and Passion’, all of which AL Guss, previous president of the race club, represented in his time on the MBRC committee and as an athlete with the Australian team.

Warwick was also lucky enough to win the door prize provided by one of the club sponsors Mogul Ski World.

In the ďŹ rst race series held at Thredbo from August 1517, some 16 MBRC athletes represented themselves and their club very well, picking up mutliple podium ďŹ nishes.

The Children’s series is age based and has U12 (series 2 only), U14 and U16 athletes and on each day there are two single run race

events for those competing.

Those athletes that are members of race clubs throughout Australia are eligible to enter and therefore the event attracted the best of the best.

Results for the series go toward selection of the Australian Children’s Team that will compete against the worlds best at FIS Events like Topolino in Italy and Whistler Cup in Canada.

TURNING GREEN:

Mt Buller turned lime for Lyme Day on Saturday, August 29 with staff donning green to raise awareness of Lyme disease.

The day was created by Ski & Snowboard School employee Beth Plummer, whose close friend is battling the little-known disease. Lyme disease is a bacterial illness most commonly contracted from the bite of a tick, and has debilitating effects on the body and cause abnormalities in the joints, heart and nervous system, including facial paralysis, heart palpitations and arthritis. Beth said she was moved to help raise awareness of the disease after seeing her friend battle the painful condition that can have considerable impacts on daily life.

THE Mt Buller community hit the slopes in school dresses on Tuesday, September 1, in a bid to help educate girls in Africa.

It was all part of Australian charity One Girl’s annual ‘Do It In A Dress’ campaign, which calls on people all over the world to complete challenges in school dresses to raise awareness and much needed funds to educate girls across Africa.

The ‘Shred It In A Dress’ event is being organised by Mt Buller resident, Megan Tags, with the group’s mission to raise $10,000 for the cause, which is enough to educate 33 girls in Africa for an entire year.

The event has also received support from sponsors Twelve Board Store, Snow Play Tours, Joyout Clothing and Yuki Threads, with Twelve Board Store donating a snowboard for the major prize in the raffle draw.

Awards presented to standout employees MT Buller Resort Management has again had some standout employees over the season and the Buller “Crew Employee of the Week” awards were recently passed out.

Among the awards were the following: RIKI MAIDEN: Enzian Hotel on Chamois Successes: Riki has worked in one and two hat restaurants in Melbourne.

He trained under Guy Grossi and takes pride in

his work and in producing good food.

This is Riki’s first season on Buller and he was brought to the mountain by Anne Jaggard and Laurie Harcus.

He enjoys working on Buller as it has the ‘best people and village atmosphere’.

His favourite place is Burnt Hut Spur as it is always a good time out there and he will remember Buller for its great food at the Enzian Hotel.

She has worked on Buller for five seasons and was brought to the mountain by Kendall Wright – her partner who worked here in 2008.

“And I really wanted to learn to snowboard,” she said.

Her favourite place is The Cat Track (off Little Buller) – the morning after a night of snow.

She will hopefully remember Buller for good coffee.

By LIZ WEBB IT is not just youngsters who enjoy a good snowsports race.

On Saturday, August 22, Mt Hotham held a ‘Masters’ Festival and Mt Buller came home with gold.

Champion Mt Buller racers were Bruce Long, Mt Buller Race Club, Ron Cracknell, Ski Club of Victoria and Mansfield resident and long-time skier of Buller, Marg Franke-Williams.

Bruce, who races in the male 45-49 category, won gold in the GS, Slalom, Dual Slalom and SkiCross disciplines.

Marg Franke-Williams races in the female 65-69 category and won gold in GS and SkiCross with a 4th in Dual Slalom.

Marg also won the Women’s Slalom overall by 20 hundredths of a second and was 20 years older than the next competitor from

Perisher Masters.

Ron races in male 65-69 category.

He won bronze in GS, finished well in SkiCross and due to work commitments was unable to compete in day two Slalom and Dual Slalom.

Just like Interschools, there are national championships with the Australian Masters Championships which took place at Perisher last week.

Encore presentation of short films MT BULLER’S Short Film Festival will hold an encore screening on Tuesday, September 15 to allow mountain staff to see the adventure.

Coordinator of the event Mark Ashkanasy said there was a great depth of talent shown

in creating all of the entries offered at this year’s event and it was a shame that many of the mountain staff were working and could not attend the premiere night.

“Based on the success of this year’s event another screening will take place next

week,” Ashkanasy said.

This year entries were welcomed from school students.

Coordinators of the event Mark Ashkanasy and Mark Woodsford have invited anyone interested in the Short Film Festival to come and join their committee.

‘Charlie’ – the heart of Mt Buller

By LIZ WEBB THE heart of Mt Buller sits at the top of the ABOM lift.

An innocuous little building housing public toilets and the driving pulse that keeps Mt Buller alive.

The Control Centre, or ‘Charlie’ as it is affectionately known is where everything technical is supervised.

Matt Janey, manager of mountain operations, sits in a very ordinary office and oversees more than 600 staff who work the lifts, ski patrol, grooming, snowmaking, maintenance, access centre, guest services and summer operations.

Six years ago he left his homeland, Oregon, and now calls Mt Buller (and Mansfield) home.

Charlie is located next door to Matt and again, is a very simple set up, computer, magnetic board filled with lift and employee names, phones and radios.

The three main Charlies Ashlea Dahlblom, Tess Hoinville and Emma Shorland - all started work as ‘lifties’.

They all love their job and return each year for more.

Their tasks are to filter all communications and constant-

ly keep mountain staff updated.

Safety is paramount to Buller Ski Lifts, so Charlie’s days start early.

Snow and weather conditions determine which lifts will operate.

The de-icers check in, are allocated their towers and then log in their progress with Charlie.

No lift can be started until the de-icer is clear.

Once lifts are started, constant checking takes place.

Lift starts and stoppages, down time, mechanical or electrical faults, all are communicated to Charlie, logged and the appropriate staff contacted and sent to check, repair and report on the lift.

Throughout the day there is constant communication between Charlie and the lifties – what runs are open, any stoppages, incidents, accidents, maintenance issues.

The phones and radios are always in action and on busy weekends up to three people can be monitoring the mountain operations.

The key performance indicators for lift operations include days of operation, downtime, snow conditions, and percentage of days on wind hold.

This is all invaluable information used in detailed one-to-10 year plans for lift maintenance.

These historical records also provide crucial information for future resort operations and future viability - for example, the snowmakers know exactly how much water and electricity have been used for snowmaking.

The exact output of each snow gun is recorded and patterns and trends for the last 10 years are studied and used to plan future lifts, runs and resorts development.

Nothing happens by chance.

In certain situations, both science and humanity are called upon.

Wind hold is one of those decisions that relies on both.

Sensors on the towers alert Charlie to a possible problem.

Front-on wind is not so bad, but cross winds can cause chairs to bash into towers or even come off cables.

If the wind problem appears borderline, then ski patrollers and lefties are often sent up a chair to give a human assessment of the wind strength.

Often the determining factor is whether they would consider it safe to put their family and friends on a chair.

Mt Buller Primary School makes learning fun

By LIZ WEBB WHAT a delightful experience it was walking into the primary school at Buller.

Happy young people were grouped around a table, working with plasticine, discussing ideas and generally having fun.

No formal desks, no blackboard, just happy chatter.

Friday at Mt Buller Primary School annexe is fun day.

Mornings are taken up with on snow programs and afternoons are for those who want to attend class.

Some 20 students ranging from prep to grade 6 undertake special projects.

This winter the school is involved in the ‘Kids Teaching Kids’ program which is supported by Target Australia.

This program was started to promote positive wellbeing

and help build resilience in young people.

It aims to raise awareness of local and global environmental issues, bring communities together to solve common challenges, and to help the next generation of leaders take collective responsibility for their future.

Students are challenged to identify and research real world issues in their communities and then report upon their findings by presenting a workshop to other students during the Target Kids Teaching Kids Week.

At this level, students become aware that they can have a positive impact on the world by starting with their peers in their own communities.

Kirstie Lee, environment educator at Mansfield Primary School was so impressed

with this project she created a Mansfield Cluster – Mansfield Primary, Mansfield Steiner School, Jamieson Primary, Merrijig Primary and Mt Buller Primary School Annex.

Students from each school have been challenged to develop a project that relates to their environment, research the information, create innovative ways to display their research and then present what they have learned to other students hence the ‘kids teaching kids’ program.

Mt Buller primary students chose the Long Nosed Bandicoot as their project.

Teacher Lesley Dunlop explained that the students have had to find out about the bandicoot’s habitat, diet, indigenous links and threats.

She explained that a great deal of thought and discussion has taken

place as to the best way to communicate this information to all the other students.

On the day I visited, a mini movie set was under construction.

Scenery had been created, plasticine bandicoot models as well as trees and rocks, spiders and other props were in place ready for filming.

The final movie, along with a stand up presentation, will be delivered to the other school groups on September 10 at Mansfield Secondary College.

The enthusiasm of these children was infectious, their inquisitiveness and problem solving capacity was inspiring to observe.

The Kids Teaching Kids program is another of those innovative programs that makes the Mansfield High Country region so unique.

A ‘Hot Doggin’ success

TO THE WINNER: Watkin McLennan, DJ Eddy and Lexi Hall from The North Face, awarded James Phillips with the FreeBOM award for embodying the FreeBOM spirit most. He won a pair of Delbello boots fitted by The Boot Lab.

THE Hot Doggin’ spirit was alive and well at the Chillfactor Freebom held in Mt Buller on Saturday, August 22.

Under a mainly fine sky, Wood Run’s bumps in the iconic Bull Run bowl were ripe for the onslaught, encouraging a freeskiing spirit rarely seen in ski competitions worldwide.

It was a day of fun and good vibes involving skiers from eight years old to 50 with some spectacular action.

“I think everyone’s collective smiles kept the weather gods happy and a dicey forecast

turned into a beautiful day of slush bumps and sunshine,” said event director Watkin McLennan.

“The Mt Buller community really got behind the event,” added Watkin.

“It was so cool to see parents skiing with their kids and brothers syncing up bump turns.

“Skiers of all disciplines and levels were represented – 8-year-olds to Olympians, racers, park skiers and bump skiers alike, there was even a guy on a TeleMono… the legend Jock Gunn.”

DJ Eddie made the trip from Hotham and pumped up the vibe on the microphone, adding some astute observations on the skiers’ style and flow.

There were plenty of highlights including Shai Ashkanasy’s “turn back the clock” flawless runs, Mitch Reeves and Jared Rodden’s dangerous speed duels and the under 12s just ripping.

Anton Grimus was also incredible, the Skier X Olympian ripped down on 220 Head downhill skis as DJ Eddy said: “He didn’t shave off his beard he just

moved it to his chest.”

The event ended with a massive party run through the bumps - “the best party run ever held at Buller” involving over 100 skiers before a dance off to decide who won a pair of K2 skis.

“Someone told me the Free has been stolen from freestyle,” said DJ Eddie.

“I think we just found it again here in Wood Run.” Special thanks to the North Face, Mt Buller, Oyuki Gloves, Dalbello, Leki, Marker, K2, The Boot Lab, Hotel Pension Grimus and Mammoth Mountain.

Good results for local schools at Interschools championships MANSFIELD SECONDARY COLLEGE MANSFIELD Secondary College (MSC) fielded a keen and talented team of cross country skiers, alpine skiers and snowboarders in the recent Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships, which drew huge entries from schools across Victoria.

Held under predominantly good conditions, the students had many top results for individuals and teams.

Leading the charge in the division two male moguls was Dan Walker who won the gold and together with Ned Angliss (5th) and Talae Rodden, they placed first as a team.

The division two male skiercross team also had a fantastic result and won a team silver, with podiums to Dan Walker in second place and Warwick Crawford in third individually, as well as ninth to Ned Angliss.

Ollie Walker also raced well in the skiercross, qualifying in 11th place.

A division one female moguls bronze team medal went to Allie-Mae Angliss and Kaitlyn Whyte (seventh individually).

They also skied solidly in the alpine GS event coming 9th and 13th respectively and both qualified for the nationals, while Allie-Mae also qualified in 8th place in the skiercross.

Oliver Walker had a great run in the division three male moguls with a fifth place, while Monica Jagger showed good form in the division two girls moguls in ninth place.

Bridget Henry just missed out on the podium with fourth place in the division three girls moguls, as well as rounding off a great week with seventh in the skiercross.

Patrick Cahill showed again he is one of the best boarders in Victoria, with a silver medal in the boardercross and fifth place in the giant slalom.

With team-mate Lucas Veneman they finished as fourth team in both events.

Boardercross results were also impressive for other divisions.

Hayley Wilson placed eighth and Fletcher Cooper placed ninth in their division two events.

Mac Cooper and Mason Spierings raced their way

individually as well to the nationals with top 15 results in the boardercross, with good improvement from Dillon Mason.

Cooper, Jeremy Davies and Jay Arndt rode to a sixth placed team in the snowboard giant slalom, while Eddie Mahoney qualified individually for the nationals.

The cross country events were held early in August and both Daniel and Oliver Walker qualified individually for the nationals, each in seventh place for their respective divisions.

It was also great to see Bridget Henry, Tallulah Madden and Ruby Devere compete as a promising team in the classic and relay events.

Mt Buller Race Department again put on a tremendously run event.

Many thanks to the dedicated parents who supported the teams and volunteered as marshalls.

Geelong Grammar won the overall Co-Ed Cup. Only one point separated the next three teams, where MSC came a creditable fourth.

A very solid team of 24 members qualified for the nationals to be held at Mt Buller this week.

Well done to all the students who participated enthusiastically and the teams who very capably represented MSC. MANSFIELD STEINER SCHOOL THE school wants to congratulate Alec Ritchie and Lachie Henderson who represented the school in the moguls at the Victorian Interschools.

The school team came fourth overall, with Alec placing 10th and Lachie placing 13th.

Both boys will go onto the nationals being held this week.

MT BULLER hosted the annual ABOM Moguls Challenge on its traditional home of Chamois last weekend, with the event attracting one of the strongest fields in its 27 year history.

First held at Mt Buller in 1989, this iconic event is one of the highlights of the winter season.

Past winners have included Olympic champions Alexandre Bilodeau (CAN) and Dale Begg-Smith (AUS).

This year’s field was one of the most competitive yet, with current world number one and 2014 Olympic silver medallist Mikael Kingsbury (CAN) plus world number three Phillipe Marquis (CAN) taking to the bumps.

After an exciting men’s final, the win was eventually claimed by the 2015 Junior Dual Mogul Champion and French national, Benjamin Cavet.

Kingsbury finished in second place followed by local Mt Buller athlete and 2014 Olympian, Brodie Summers.

In the women’s event, twotime Winter Olympian Britt Cox claimed her fourth ABOM Mogul title challenge – a mean feat for the 20-year-old Australian.

“It was fantastic to see the ABOM Moguls Challenge return to its home on Chamois, offering the perfect location for the crowd of spectators to take in all the action,” he said.

“The calibre of athletes competing in the Challenge was incredibly high, and it was great to have Australia so strongly represented on the podium.

“We’re thrilled to see two Mt Buller athletes, Brodie Summers and Jakara Anthony, dominating at their home resort,” Blampied said.

The ABOM Mogul Challenge is sanctioned by the International Ski Federation (FIS) with results contributing to World Rankings and National team selections.

The event was run in the dual moguls format, where athletes compete against each other side-by-side down a 200m long course featuring two table top jumps.

Competitors battled it out for $8000 in prize money along with the honour of etching their name into ABOM Moguls history.
