Snow at last - and it’s getting better by the day
IT’S snowing on Mt Buller and Mt Stirling. Mother Nature has been quite fickle but it would seem, however, she has finally heard skiers’ pleas and delivered more than 10cm of fresh snow over the past week. And reports are the flakes are expected to come down in showers right up to the weekend, reported Libby Blampied, marketing consultant with Buller Ski Lifts. Libby wrote in one daily report “While ol’ Mother Nature has been keeping busy doing other things, it’s the snowmakers who are the real

heroes of our story”. “These cold, dry conditions couldn’t be more ideal to get the guns blazing, and we’ve seen some of our best snowmaking since 2010,” she said. “In fact, the amount of cubic metres of snow the guns have pumped out is up by 25 per cent on the five year average. “Of course, we’re happy to welcome the natural snow which is falling right now but to our snow making team, well done.” Resort Management Board chief executive officer, John Huber, said the first week of the school holidays

holidays are a week behind Victoria, so expect to see lots more visitors over the coming week as well. “This week is jam packed full of fun, with the 10th annual Burton Cattleman’s Rail Jam, where Australia’s top snowboarders will hit the Cattleman’s rail in the heart of the Village Square, along with the Frank Freestyle Friday session in the terrain park all happening in the second week of the holidays,” Mr Huber said. “With fresh snow and plenty happening for all ages, we’re feeling on top of the world here at Mt Buller.”

“Adding to the excitement is the Mt Buller Adventure Race, happening on Saturday, July 25 and ties in nicely with the Backcountry Film Festival, which is happening on the same day.” With dustings of snow on the slopes it’s starting to feel a lot more like winter. “It looks like we’re going to see some clouds stick around with a high chance of snow showers over this weekend,” Mr Huber said. Mid-week Buller had five lifts turning, with recommendations to ski and board Little Buller Spur, Bourke Street and the Frank MBP setup.

George’s Mt Buller story continues after 50 years GEORGE Aivatoglou was awarded a special certificate commemorating more than 50 years’ dedication to Mt Buller and here we continue his story and his mountain history. George has been a resident on Mt Buller, and at Merrijig for more than 50 years having arrived in 1962. Not knowing anyone or even being able to speak much English, George worked at a number of carpentry jobs around Melbourne before heading off to Buller. He was offered a job on Mt Buller - more than a three hour drive from Melbourne, which to him must have seemed a very remote place at the time, to help with the building of Auski Ski Hire in November 1962. He worked long hours during the day on the building and after it opened in 1963, George worked in the ski hire until 1967. However, in the evenings George also worked at the ABOM (pre-Grollo ownership) doing dishes, then graduating to making coffees and then to pancakes. In 1968 he was asked to manage a new ski hire called Molony’s - in the new Molony’s apartment building. He managed that shop for many years until the owner decided to sell and George purchased the business changing its name to George’s Ski Hire - all in about 1982 - and it is still known by that name today. However, in 1985 seeing an opportunity and need for a further ski hire business he purchased an old farm on the Mt Buller Road at Merrijig and built the motel now known as

the Merrijig Motor Inn and incorporated a ski hire building as well. He eventually leased the motel and the ski hire after running it for a few years. But, this was still not enough for George and expanding his business interests he purchased the old Bill Duff Ski Hire on Summit Road (Mt Buller) and in 1992 renovated it which then became Valley View Ski Hire which was burnt to the ground on the eve of the opening of the ski season by unknown means. George then decided, after running the ski hire out of a shed for one season, to turn the site into flats and so built
Valley View Apartments. During his time on Mt Buller he has owned four ski hires - all at the same time, Horse Hill Ski Hire, Valley View Ski Hire, George’s Ski Hire and Merrijig Ski Hire - eventually either selling or leasing them and just keeping George’s. A hard working man, George has helped to build many buildings at Mt Buller during the summers including ski clubs, the ABOM and many more. And after more than 50 years working in the ski industry you would think it is time for George to perhaps ‘slow down a little’ but not

so - you can still drop in and chat to George at the ski hire at the bottom of Athlete’s Walk - right on the edge of Village Square. His family - wife Margaret as managing director, son Robert and daughter Lia, have all been involved at some stage during the years. It is a truly family run business. Building his own little empire, and being a part of the long and productive development of Mt Buller, does he intend to retire .... who knows? We will all wait and see - but expect to meet and greet George at the opening of each season for many years to come still.

Big year at Buller for Interschools By DAVID SPEIRS - Event Manager THE Subaru Victorian and Australian Interschool Snowsports Championships as well as the South Australian Interschools will be hosted at Mt Buller this season. The South Australian (SA) Interschools will be conducted on July 15 and 16 in the disciplines of Alpine Skiing and Snowboarding. Students of all ages and abilities will battle it out for champion school, team and for individual honours. The SASKI week from Sunday, July 12 to Friday, July 17, is a celebration of not only the Interschools, the event also serves as an accessible family holiday to Mt Buller in the last week of the SA school holidays. The Subaru Victorian Cross Country Championships will be conducted at Mt Buller on Sunday, August 9. The Tirol flat cross country course which was designed in conjunction with Ski and Snowboard Australia’s cross country technical delegates in 2014, will be open on Saturday, August 8 for training.
More than 800 event entries are expected in this fantastic event. Event disciplines will be individual and team classic events, followed by the exciting freestyle team relay events in the afternoon. The Victorian championships will be hosted at Mt Buller from August 24 to 30 and 180 schools with more than 5000 event entries competing in the disciplines of Alpine Skiing, Moguls, Ski Cross, Snowboard Cross and Snowboard Giant Slalom. The top 15 individuals and top six teams from each event will qualify for the Australian championships. The Subaru Australian Interschool Snowsports Championships will be hosted at Mt Buller from September 9 to 13. All event sites will be prepared throughout the season to maximise the quality of courses at the nationals. More than 200 schools from around the country will be represented with close to 2900 entries across seven disciplines. Vic Interschools event manager, David Speirs, said that he is very excited about the
upcoming season. “The team that impacts on the quality of these events have been working hard on the planning and we are continually looking to improve all areas of the event experience from new mobile compatible website design, improved scheduling and start time information,” Mr Speirs said. “Our goal is to stage world class events that are not only accessible but deliver an extraordinary competition experience for all levels of participants, as well as their families and schools.” For more information please visit www.vicinterschools.com.au.

Light up for leukaemia MT BULLER’S ‘Light the Night’ fundraiser in aid of the Leukaemia Foundation is on again on Saturday, July 18 at 6pm. Always a spectacular and fun event, the parade of lanterns making their way down on skis, snowboards or on foot is a sight to behold.

Burton Cattleman’s rail jam at Buller this Saturday A HOST of Australia’s top pro-riders will battle it out for cash and prizes in an action-packed expression session in the centre of the Village Square this coming Saturday evening. In its 10th year, Australia’s best snowboarders will compete on Mt Buller’s legendary Burton Cattleman’s Rail under lights for a share of $7000 worth of cash and prizes. The Cattleman’s Rail Jam event has become the highlight in Australia’s freestyle calendar since 2005 attracting world-class riders and the largest crowd of any event in Australia, eager to see the adrenaline charged action on show. The competition’s format will once again offer the chance for Australia’s best up-and-coming snowboard talent to be a part of the night-time final, with
qualifiers taking place throughout the day on the Cattleman’s Replica Stair Set located in the Frank Mt Buller Terrain Park. Historically, Cattleman’s has unfolded as an ‘invite only’ event, but once again in 2015 the only way a rider can guarantee automatic qualification is if they have previously won the event. Riders can register on the Saturday, July 12 out the front of Freeride Boardstore at 9am, however, spots are limited. The top 10 qualifiers from the day’s heats will then compete against previous competition winners on Mt Buller’s famed Cattleman’s Stair Set in the Village Square for a share of the $7000 prize pool, plus product from Mophie for best trick.

AT the opening of this year’s winter season Mt Buller and FOX FM announced their new three year partnership. They will be combining forces to give visitors a new experience on the mountain and listeners the chance to win their way to the snow resort. Both Mt Buller and Fox FM can guarantee nothing but a whole lot of fun and something for everyone – whether you are a snowplay angel or an avid ski bunny, they’ve got you covered. Resort visitors will see Fox FM front and centre with the new inclusion of the Fox Chairlift on

WHAT size ski do I need? Although this is a frequently asked question, it isn’t necessarily a simple one. There is no “one-size-fitsallâ€? answer for this question as it depends on a lot of variables, including where you want to ski, skiing ability, height and weight. It can be an easy process ďŹ tting someone with skis provided the right questions are asked. I work by building a holistic picture in my mind as to how someone skis and what type of terrain they prefer. For example someone skiing only the groomed runs at Mt Buller compared to heliskiing in the Canadian Rockies will have a very different ski. Firstly I determine where they want to ski, as this will dictate the type and shape of ski required. Selection of the correct

Personally at 183cm and 80kg, if I were looking to ski at Mt Buller on only groomed runs, I could use an aggressively shaped slalom ski as
short as 165cm in length. If I wanted an all-mountain ski, then a ski at 177cm would be more appropriate. Whereas if I were to go powder skiing in Japan, then a wide, rockered powder ski at 191cm is best. If you can ski on extremely varied terrain and in different conditions, you will need more

Visitor numbers up despite not much snow DESPITE little natural snow falling over the past few weeks on Mt Buller, visitor numbers have remained static according to reports from the ARCC. Week four of the season (ending on Sunday, June 28) saw some 10,813 visitors to Mt Buller but only 24 to Mt Stirling. Mt Buller’s figures were up by almost 1000 when compared to the same week in 2014.
Year to date figures for Buller are 27,829, up 14 per cent from last year at the same time while Mt Stirling (which still had no snow up until Thursday) were 150 – down some 82 per cent. Across all resorts in the Victorian Alpine regions some 62,650 visitors have reached the snowfields for this season with 22,273 of these visitors visiting resorts in the fourth week. Visitor days have remained
pretty much the same as last year with 18,766 staying on Buller during week four – down by only 70 guests overall, however, when comparing the year to date figure of 47,618 compared to last year some 16,000 more overnight stays have been recorded. Mt Buller still remains the resort with the highest number of visitors overall with almost half of the year to date visitor days coming to “My Buller”.

Jay is at home in the high country
IT’S a familiar story in the high country – visitors come for a holiday and stay a lifetime. Not quite a lifetime yet, but the story goes that The Sebel’s head chef, Jay Hay, came for a holiday in 2008 and apart from a brief return to native Scotland, he has been here ever since and plans to remain. Returning to Austalia he made his way back to the high country, basing himself on Mt Buller. He has worked at most of the Buller establishments including the ABOM, Cattleman’s, the Chalet and Spurs. Jay made the move to The Sebel (Accor Vacation Club’s Pinnacle Valley Resort) only six weeks ago, but he is loving
the fact that he is still based within the high country. Jay did his chef’s apprenticeship in Scotland starting at a very tender age of 16, with training at Aberdeen College and the Robert Gordon University. In his early days though he was very much influenced by several Italian chefs and grew to love the rich cuisine which he tends to take with him wherever he goes. “I’ve been to Italy six times so far and love it each time I go,” he said. “But I love The Sebel as here we use all local products and everything is in-house made. “Two dishes which are very popular and on the menu are pan fried Gnocci and Veal Scallopini – the veal is a best seller,” he said. “But my favourite dish is
Pollo alla Gellese (in English meaning chicken named after Jay) and is compiled of a chicken breast stuffed with buffalo mozzarella and fresh basil and wrapped in prosciutto.” The Sebel’s refurbished Peaks restaurant and bar has been given a Tyrolean feel to it, suiting the theme of the high country along with Jay’s Italian influenced cuisine. There are also plenty of other dishes, both Australian favourites and other delectable delights, to choose from on the extensive menu. But Jay’s love of the outdoors has heightened his love for the high country. “I love everything outdoors, mountain biking, motorbike trails, skiing and snowboarding all of which I can do from here,” he said.

THE weather on Mt Buller last Friday morning was blue skies and sunshine with plenty of snow on Bourke Street, while in Mansfield the skies cleared for similar conditions in the afternoon for a while, before the clouds came back. Some 84 skiers faced the starter on Mt Buller for the two Giant Slalom runs. It is not the fastest team that won, rather the team with the least time difference between their first and second runs - it is consistency that counts. Then to the Mansfield Golf Club for lunch and the 18 hole
ambrose competition. Again, it was a team effort with the best ball on each stroke counting. Retiring to the Mansfield Golf Club clubhouse after the golf, competitors enjoyed the odd ale as tall stories of their prowess were told. Mansfield Secondary College Snow Sports coordinator, Geoff Walker, said the money raised will be distributed between Mansfield, Merrijig, Jamieson and St Mary’s primary schools, the Mansfield Steiner School and Mansfield Secondary College and the Mt Buller Sports and Recreation Association to support local kids learning snowsports at Mt Buller.
“Schools use the funds to subsidise snowsports across the board, especially helping those who may not be able to afford the program,” he said. This year a record of $21,500 was raised. The RT Edgar Calcutta was held the night before on Thursday, July 2 at the ABOM Moosehead Bar. Tim Josephson who has worked his way around the mountain as well as at the Coffee Merchant in Mansfield, has set up where Wok Works used to be. Tim serves Coffee Merchant coffee, Mork hot chocolate and Mad as a Hatter Chai as well as fresh soups, sandwiches and an interesting selection of savoury and sweet jaffles, you can eat in, takeaway or sit out in the sun and watch the world go by. Reportedly it is said to be the earliest coffee available, 7.15am or sometimes earlier.

Opening the Pancake Parlour about eight years ago, according to Laurie great coffee works on a 30/30/30 rule – clean machine, good barista, great coffee (the other 10 per cent must be love). Laurie’s coffee of choice is New World which complements the sensational Canadian sourdough style pancakes that are part of their famous ‘big breakfast’ from 8.30am.

he aroma of Italy wafts out of Pat’s Italian. This season their new barista Bridey is serving what she rates is one of the best ever coffees, Merlo from Queensland. Bridey is also a talented singer, so a true Italian atmosphere is sure to appeal to families looking for a great night out.

rom breakfast to dinner, Dolomiti Italiano opened last year inside Alpine Retreat. From 7.30am, baristas Brigid and Alex serve a specially roasted Beraldo blend to inhouse guests and anyone in the area who is in need of a strong, smooth and flavoursome coffee fix. It’s also worth noting that their adjacent Off Piste Bar which is open ‘til 10pm, serves an amazing Espresso Martini. Dolomiti Italiano received rave reviews last year for its innovative menu, and together with all day coffee, hot or cold from 7.30am – 10pm makes it worth a visit.
Snow Pony arrived at Mt Buller six years ago and has become a firm family favourite during the day. Manager Kyle has created barista magic for the last three years. He is full of praise for Snow Pony’s Kommon Grounds coffee, a specialty blend of beans roasted in South Australia. Gourmet ‘wet’ Chai is also popular, but the kids all crave steaming hot chocolate and Snow Pony’s jumbo marshmallows which can be toasted over their open fire.

nd finally almost opposite Snow Pony on the Avenue side of Bourke Street you’ll find a quirky little ‘hole in the wall’, The Grimus Grind. Anton Grimus set up his bespoke ‘Grimus Grind’ last year. Opening at 7.30am in the morning, coffee connoisseurs queue up for the freshly ground Duke’s Autonomy Industrie beans, to give them that extra kick before they load onto the Abom lift. Barista Hugo is new to Mt Buller this year. Previously head barista at Denmark Hill Café and Snow Pony, Melbourne, he says he has landed his dream job. Grimus Grind also serves up Piranha Chai and a selection of toasties including a special bean/gruyere, a classic hot ‘Brekky Wrap’, Reuben sandwich and huge chocolate chip and Anzac cookies - 7.30- 4ish are the hours. When you tire of the mountain trails, there’s a wonderful aroma trail - Mt Buller’s coffee trail is definitely worth exploring.

Life at the bottom of the hill – it’s busy but great By PAM ZIERKMAHONEY GIVING up the corporate world in Melbourne and moving to the high country has been easy for Laura Hartman. With her sister Meg and brother-in-law Leigh Hemming already living at Merrijig, and being a regular visitor to the area, when the chance to work at Mirimbah came up Laura jumped at it. She worked with Stuart Wadsworth who had managed the store for the past 10 years through winter last season and when the managerial position became vacant, she applied. “In Melbourne I had worked
in various roles, in and out of hospitality since I was 14, but then went into business development and the corporate world, but I had always dreamt of owning my own coffee shop,” Laura said. Laura took over the running of Mirimbah last November when Stuart went off to open his new restaurant – and hasn’t looked back. “We have tried to maintain the reputation that Stuart had built up and have kept some of his favourite recipes on the menu, as well as trying new things,” Laura said. “Being open all year round now has also given the locals somewhere to come for coffee
and snacks. “We have also brought in a small range of everyday grocery lines for the locals – it saves them having to go into Mansfield,” Laura said. “And we have changed our brand of coffee – we now buy from The Coffee Merchant in Mansfield and after trying various blends - earmarking Felici’s darker blend which we find our customers prefer.” The store is the last stop at the bottom of the mountain before snow enthusiasts and visitors ascend the hill, and with a wide range of homemade foods, hot drinks, snacks and fuel the establishment also caters for skiers with full hire
