Record numbers can’t get enough of Buller VISITOR number records just may skyrocket this season if the good snow and fine weather conditions continue on Mt Buller and Mt Stirling. In the week ending Sunday August 3, some 34,177 visitors poured through the gates to Buller and a further 1202 to Stirling. Visitor day numbers have also jumped with Buller recording 48,984 and Stirling 1280 (overnight camping). For the past three weekends in a row record numbers have

prior to last weekend, and with very cold temperatures down to minus 7, it meant the resort could ensure the snowmaking guns were blasting, pumping out even more snow for skiers and boarders to enjoy. The resort welcomed tens of thousands of visitors who were lucky enough to combine fresh snowfalls with blue skies

in some of the best conditions seen in recent years. On both Saturday and Sunday, August 2 and 3 more than 2000 cars entered the resort each day. On the Sunday cars were parked all the way down the mountain, parked in every available safe spot including chain fitting bays with addi-
tional bus shuttles having to be engaged to get visitors to the top and back down again at the end of the day. At one stage last Sunday it was reported that the line of cars waiting to enter the gates was some 7kms long. And Mt Buller resort management is encouraging keen snow lovers to get to the resorts early on weekends and avoid the lengthy queues to get through the gates. Continued page 2

THE proposal to create a new link road via Cornhill linking Mt Buller to Howqua Gap at Mt Stirling has many beneďŹ ts. Obviously extensive work done in the past on a shorter and better option has been overlooked because of changes to resort management over the years and should be revisited. I was Senior Ranger at Mt Stirling from 1983 to 1991 and was responsible for developing most of the existing infrastructure on the mountain. Shortly after the landside on the Mt Buller Road resort manager Sandi Jeffcoat proposed investigating alternative access/egress routes to the resort. Two proposals were considered. The ďŹ rst was to upgrade the track from the Cornhill quarry to Howqua Gap. This was a useful connection in summer.
In winter it is used for search and rescue with over snow vehicles and as a ski trail. To prevent loss of this over snow link and reduce impact on Mt Stirling’s existing facilities, a shorter (3.3km), low altitude route was proposed from Box Corner on Mt Buller to Telephone Box Junction (TBJ) at Mt Stirling. In 1990 approximately 2km of this was constructed as a 4WD track from Box Corner to River Spur on Stirling. The remaining 1km section from River Spur to TBJ was not completed at this time. The Cornhill Road option has many inherent problems because of altitude, visual and acoustic impact and the effect on Stirling’s facilities. It also has disadvantages as an emergency evacuation road as it ends deeper in forest. This is part of the reason the VNPA is
“up in armsâ€? about the proposal. (The VNPA’s ultimate aim is to have Mt Stirling included in the Alpine National Park and managed as an alpine park. This would be to the detriment of existing recreational opportunities at Mt Stirling. Their current objections are really just scaremongering!) The Box Corner - TBJ link has many advantages being below the snowline and would not compromise any existing facilities at Mt Stirling. It would improve access and trafďŹ c ow to both resorts. I would highly recommend that the funding be spent on this lower link road, not the Cornhill Road. Only then will both resorts be connected by a low impact, easy to maintain, short ring road, enhancing tourism opportunities to the region.

ALPINE Central on Mt Buller is becoming the place to exhibit works of art, be it photography, painting or other mediums. On Saturday evening, August 2, 55 people enjoyed the opening night of the ‘I AM Altitude’ photographic exhibition at Alpine Central. The exhibition, by acclaimed photographer Ciaran Handy, features a stunning collection of images of a wintry Mt Buller. Attendees at the opening heard Ciaran speak of his love of the mountain, and in particular, the Buller sunrises, and listened as he shared his vision, inspiration and emotion behind his images. Ciaran is an Associate of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography and also a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

The Ski Club of Victoria recognises this in its annual awarding of the Bernd Greber trophy to the fastest under 17 girl, and boy, in its weekly club ski and snowboard event. (The Snowports building is named after Bernd and the sculpture outside, “Spirit of the Skier” is dedicated to him). Tayla and Casper have been regular competitors in the SCV races since a very early age and are congratulated on winning the 2014 Bernd Greber cup. The presentation was made by Ross Taylor, director of the Buller Sports Ski School.

THIS year’s annual trophy to commemorate the life of the late Bernd Greber was won by Tayla Hughes and Casper Bjarnason, both from long time Buller skiing families. Bernd was the head coach of the Buller Ski School race department for many years and became director in 2000. He was an exceptional skier, a wonderful coach, a friend to everyone at Mount Buller, highly respected in his position, and loved by all. He was instrumental in introducing state of the art computer based timing into the Interschools and was a strong supporter of all racing programs. Sadly Bernd lost his life in an avalanche in his home town in Austria on December 27, 2001. He was survived by his wife Birgit, and son Tim.

THE 2014 Junior National Mogul Championships “jNats” took place under glorious blue skies at Mt Buller on August 3. A field of more than 60 athletes competed in the event, battling it out for a smorgasbord of prizes including $1000 prize money from Bounce Inc, Bolle Goggles and assorted items from Aussieskier. After each athlete had a qualifying run, the top 10 skiers from each division advanced to the final. Both Jakara Anthony (Junior Female)
and Angus Hill (Youth Men) were the number one skiers from qualifying and the final for their division, putting in a commanding performance. Angus Cronin-Guss (Junior Male) and Lily Schwarz (Youth Female) improved from their qualifying positions to take victory in their division. It was great to see a number of young competitors take part in their first ever event on a full length mogul course, which will give them great experience for the future. Many thanks to Mt Buller, Bounce Inc,

Tobie and the team bite into Buller for Oliver’s ‘Foodtube’ MT BULLER welcomed celebrity chef Tobie Puttock and his team to the mountain recently to film for Jamie Oliver’s YouTube channel ‘FoodTube’. Tobie was charged with filming a video featuring his very own souvlaki recipe for ‘FoodTube’, which
boasts more than 900,000 subscribers. A passionate snowboarder, Tobie decided to show off Mt Buller in all its glory and merge souvlaki’s and the snow. The video was shot at Pendergast Hut on Mt Buller in picture perfect conditions
and was well received by some hungry members of Ski Patrol who were involved in the filming. Tobie Puttock will also host a dinner at Black Cockatoo restaurant (Mt Buller Chalet) on August 21, with his good friend and wine connoisseur Matt Skinner.

Finding people faster: Buller CFA helps maps out village for visitors so that stress fear and panic are minimised and the lead agency can better direct their resources,” he said. Speaking on a cold morning at the height of the snow season, Paul reflected on the heightened risk factor brought about by the climate. “The temperature here at the moment is minus 1, and given it’s 11.30am people are dressed accordingly,” he said. “But transfer these conditions to overnight, if there’s an accident or people have to suddenly evacuate their warm lodges dressed in indoor clothes, then the prospect of survival outside are slim.
Mt Buller attracts some 400,000 visitors annually, has the largest lift capacity in Victoria, and a capacity of 7500 beds. Under the ESTA project, hundreds of buildings, including each chalet, lodge and commercial enterprise, have been allocated a number and road name. In the past, emergency services have had to rely heavily on the local knowledge of responding crews to supplement information received from callers. Paul said that previous attempts to impose a consistent addressing system at Mt Buller
had not succeeded. “We were all acutely aware of the need for this project to be built with a strong sense of community ownership, along with input and expertise from the emergency services,” he said. “We needed a system that was easy for everyone to use whether they were a resident, visitor or employee. “It needed to be cost effective and easy for businesses to explain to their customers.” “The fact that this project has succeeded where others failed is due to the effort we put in to engage local businesses and the genuine commitment
of local agencies to work together.” Along with CFA, the Department of Environment and Primary Industry (DEPI), Ambulance Victoria, Victoria Police and the Office of Geographic Names all contributed. To make sure the data was reliable, various technologies were brought together including contemporary spatial mapping systems, integraph CAD, mobile GPS technology and aerial photography. Paul said that wherever tourists gather in numbers and a need for 000 arises, similar models could be considered. The Mt Buller model, which
was developed from the ground up and went live in early June this year, will be used as a best practice example for the states five ski resorts as well as on French Island. In December 2013, CFA commenced similar projects at Falls Creek and Mt Hotham in conjunction with the Alpine Shire. CFA has also distributed evacuation plan proformas (an initiative of operations officer Brett Boatman at Mt Hotham) have been distributed to all lodge committees by CFA through a partnership with Resort Management at Mt Buller.

A NEW addressing system on Mt Buller is equipping emergency 000 callers to better explain their location and make it easier for emergency services to identify their location. CFA operations officer Paul Horton, who is stationed at Mt Buller during the winter months, said the Mt Buller Urban Addressing Project – led by ESTA with strong support from CFA – would mean faster response times in an environment where time was critical. “The idea is to help the caller – especially if they are a visitor to the area – be more specific about where they are

IT will be 40 years on Friday, September 26 since the death of one of Mt Buller’s earliest photographers, Edwin (Ted) G Adamson. And it will be 10 years on that date since his works were put into one exhibition and displayed to the public. To commemorate this, Ted’s son, also Edwin (Ed) has organised this photographic exhibition of the early days of two of MansďŹ eld’s top tourist attractions to be on display from now until the end of September at the Bonnie Bar, Bonnie Doon. History records farmers and city entrepreneurs getting together to promote the idea of Mt Buller becoming a skiing hub from the early 1920s. At the same time far sighted people recognised the opportunity to harness water for irrigation by building a dam in the Goulburn River upper catchment. “As you know, this resulted in Lake Eildon, ďŹ rst built in the 1920s, enlarged in the 1950s and added to again just a couple of years ago for safety reasons,â€? Ed said.

On August 1 at the Bonnie Bar, an exhibition of Ted Adamson’s photos from the 1920s to 1940s was launched and will run through to end of the ski season, with an un-ofďŹ cial commmemorative night to be held on September 26. Son Ed will be on hand to talk to anyone who wants to know more about his father and his early photographic experiences. “Everybody is invited to this ‘Come as you are’ get together to celebrate the water, the snow and the blessings they bring us,â€? said Ed Adamson. “It’s time to get together around the wood ďŹ re, view the professional’s hobby photos and celebrate lifeâ€?. To wax or not? WHY do we need to wax our skis and snowboards? Just like the steel edges that oxidize, known as rust, the polyethylene base material oxidises as well. The oxidation can have a milky white appearance and feels fury to the touch. A ski or board base left un-waxed over summer or ridden without being waxed will oxidise quite quickly. Waxing frequently prevents the base material from oxidising as well helping with the glide characteristics. Waxing over the top of the oxidation will not entirely solve the problem. In the short term the ski or board may run a little better but once the surface wax has gone you are back riding on a fury base that could be very slow. In an ideal world we should all wax our skis or snowboard after nearly every day or two. You can’t wax them too much. Hot waxing gives the best penetration of the base. There other DIY options available such as like rub-on, paste or even liquid waxes. If you’re unsure what is the best for your skis or board check with your local ski/board shop repair technician. At Bumps we identified years ago that most skiers and boarders simply don’t wax there skis or boards nearly enough. Forget the glamor, here’s a day in the life of Mt Buller Ski Patrol By LIZ WEBB SKI patrol - the perception is that it’s the glamorous mountain job. Skiing around all day, helping gorgeous ‘damsels in distress’ or picking up a ‘handsome hunk’. Far from it. Ski patrol is about risk management with unpredictable variables such as dealing with the extremes of nature and the randomness of human nature. Despite this, ski patrollers tend to be dedicated long term employees and many volunteer just for the sheer pleasure of a weekend in the mountains. Mt Buller Ski Patrol employs 20 full time staff with an additional 30-35 volunteers swelling the ranks during busy periods and weekends. Most have been doing the job for years - it’s a lifestyle not just a job. They’re passionate about what their work and they love their mountain. Current ski patrol director Sam McDougall started at Buller in 1990. Names such as Speaky and Donny (both recently retired) and long, long timers Ed, Andy and Ossi are well known and trusted.

In summer, the career patrollers tend to head to the northern winter and Mt Buller has a share arrangement with Squaw Valley, California and Tignes in France. New skills are learned and valuable business links created. Kyle Jorgensen, an exchange patroller from Squaw Valley was happy to comment on his first Australian season on our mountain. “In the US it’s been great getting to know the Aussies who come over and work with us at Squaw, so I jumped at the chance to spend a season here,” Kyle said.
to be fixed, tower pads lifted or lowered, ‘sweeping’ the mountain to ascertain the state of the snow cover, then advising that the lifts can open. Once the human element invades the slopes, it’s a case of responding as quickly as possible, assessing and treating major injuries and assessing the necessary management for minor damage. On a busy day there may be up to 50 call outs (weekends/ school holidays) but mostly the daily incident average is 15-18. Generally, after comprehensive ski patrol first aid evaluation, most incident
“Everyone is so friendly and helpful, it’s fantastic. “The snow is amazing, I love the terrain and it’s a really friendly resort.” According to Kyle the job is pretty much the same here as it is in the States, however, “We do have more avalanche control work in Squaw, snow bombing, opening slopes early and keeping an eye on dangerous terrain, but generally the work is the same”. A typical ski patrollers day starts very early checking for hazards such as creeks and sink holes that have opened up, bare patches to be fenced off, fences
cases ski or board away. Luckily, most Mt Buller incidents do not require transportation to the Medical Centre, but it is up to ski patrollers to make that decision. A number of patients just want to continue their fun out on the snow. In this situation and especially if a person has fallen and hit their head, patrollers always provide comprehensive information about possible symptoms that can occur later, check to see that the injured stays with a friend and advise them to contact the Medical Centre or a doctor if their condition deteriorates. If a patient has lost consciousness, then it’s straight to the Medical Centre. This year approximately 270 snowsports enthusiasts have been taken to the Mt Buller Medical Centre and knees still tend to be the biggest injury. Ultimately though, ski patrol is all about customer service, creating a safe and secure mountain and winning customer trust and loyalty, appearing when needed, answering questions and providing advice on the best way to enjoy snow sports on Mt Buller.

No news is good news MT BULLER’S police presence is travelling along very nicely this season with not a lot to report. Leading Senior Constable Nick McHugh of Mansfield police said although there had been a big increase in the number of visitors this season, all were largely well behaved. “There have been some delays in traffic flow due to the high numbers of visitors but that is mainly weekends,� he said. Apart from the traffic and lots of people all has been relatively quiet on the slopes as far as police news goes – all is good.

Patrolling for our safety By PAM ZIERK-MAHONEY THERE are genuine times when people ‘just get lost’ in the snow and need help in ďŹ nding their way out again. And that’s when resorts such as Mt Buller and Mt Stirling call on their experienced ski patrols, employees and emergency services to come to the rescue. Recently four members of the Victoria Police Search & Rescue facilitated a four day training
camp on Mt Buller along with ski patrol staff from across trhe alpine resorts. The three mountains involved are Mt Buller, Mt Hotham and Falls Creek. Sergeant Simon Brand of S&R said the training has been ongoing for 10 years and was initially the brainchild of Sam McDougall and himself. “We had identiďŹ ed that the major resort ski patrols were all performing vertical rescue to differing standards and differing
techniques,� Sgt Brand said last week. “We brought them all together in 2005 at Mt Buller, developed operating procedures and techniques and developed a training course to deliver that training.� Each year training is at a different resort (Hotham next year). The host mountain picks up the cost, with Police S&R providing the trainers and most equipment and the host mountain gaining four spots while the others get two spots each.
Only the three mountains with a demonstrated need get the training. Sgt Brand said the number of pure alpine (snow rescues) average between ďŹ ve to 10 each season, varying in complexity and duration, these are all out of the resorts. The ski patrols (3) in and around the resorts perform about 10 ropes rescues/evacuations per year and each attend more than 1000 injury related incidents in a season.
Two days to Subaru Interschools XC EVER since their addition to the Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships, the Cross Country disciplines of Cross Country Classical and Cross Country Relay (a skate event) have been very popular. Starting on August 10, the XC have also served as very important means of introducing many Victorian school children to the sport of Cross Country Skiing. Over many years, Mt Buller has provided a wonderful venue for this competition, and many of the sport’s elite athletes have risen through the various Interschools Age Divisions and gone on to represent Australia at World Cups, World Championships, and also the Olympics. IT’S not often that an entire school goes skiing all at once, but that is exactly what happens with the Merrijig and Jamieson Primary School students. Kicking off their skiing program last recently, the primary school kids
travelled to Mt Buller to enjoy the best snow season seen in decades. The schools’ skiing program is boosted with the kind donation of funds from the Mark Adams Ski and Golf Day - an annual event which see funds raised divided among the local schools to help children get involved in the sport.

First race a cracker MT BULLER held its inaugural Adventure Race on Saturday, July 26. Competitors took part in an on-snow orienteering race that saw teams of two compete to navigate themselves around a series of checkpoints throughout the resort in the quickest time – whether that be by snowshoes, skis, snowboard or their chosen snowsports method. The event took place on Mt Buller’s ‘snowgaining’ course which was launched in 2013 and provides a great new activity to appeal to those looking for a unique challenge. Event organiser Ben Annear said the event was a great success in its first year, with teams competing via a range of methods. “We had a great day out
on the slopes for the very first Mt Buller Adventure Race,” Ben said. “Two of our very talented Stirling Experience’s international ski instructors took line honors, with Estonians Vahur Teppan and Joosep Tammemae setting a cracking pace and completing the course in just over an hour. “The guys showed their incredible speed and talent on cross-country skis by covering more than 10km and 650m elevation in slightly over an hour – a very impressive effort.” Vahur and Joosep will compete in this month’s Kangaroo Hoppet at Falls Creek and by all reports look set to do well – keep an eye on the Mt Stirling facebook page for their results.

By PAM ZIERKMAHONEY THE Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre operates a youth program for at risk and disadvantaged young people who reside on the Bellarine Peninsula in the Greater City of Geelong municipality. The centre recently hosted a holiday break for 28 disadvantaged teenagers, six youth workers and one Victoria Police officer, to Mt Buller where they enjoyed the hospitality of Buller management and stayed at Buller Central over four days. The camp included an intensive snowboarding program.

“The camp is designed so that we can encourage young people to try something that is not in their comfort zone, building self esteem, confidence, positive relationships and respect amongst peers,” said Ocean Grove Neighbourhood Centre manager Nicki Dunne. “All young people enjoyed the trip and gained new skills – a special thank you to Mt Buller Management who supported the trip financially in discounting our lift and hire donating $2500 as well as the City of Greater Geelong who provided us with our visibility
vests,” said Nicki. “The young people represented themselves in high esteem with many other skiers/ snowboarders on the mountain asking who and where they were from. “This included one holiday maker who was so impressed by our program and that he made a large donation to the program while we were on the mountain,” Nicki said. A quote from one of a parents on the group’s return said it all - “I just wanted to thank you and all your wonderful crew for taking my son on the snow trip.

Young people are involved in all aspects of preparing and planning for the camp, budgeting, meal selections and activities. “These valuable skills that young people are gaining will help to support them into adult and community life,” Nicki said. Nicki said she felt this camp would provide young people with new skills and knowledge in the benefits of health recreational activities, first aid, planning and meal preparation. Over the past 14 years the centre has operated it has reached many milestones. It has also been instrumental in building a positive relationship between youth and local police.

This past week Buller has celebrated Christmas Week with plenty of Christmas cheer and great events happening across the mountain. This next week marks the start of the Interschools competitions kicking off with Cross Country on Sunday, August 10. Cross country has served as a very important means of introducing many Victorian school children to the sport of skiing. And on Tuesday the Jewish Interschools competitions will be run. This will lead into the Victorian Interschools championships due to commence on August 25.

Avalanches an inherent risk, so take precautions By GARTH VAN NOORDEN – BACKCOUNTRY ENTHUSIAST

WHAT are the chances I could be caught in an avalanche this winter? Now we are in August and we have already had our fair share of tragedy and close calls in our Alps. With more snow fall ahead, combined with more wind and cold weather, there is no doubt the avalanche risk will increase. Avalanches are unique natural disasters, in that they are almost always triggered by the victim, or someone in the victim’s party. Knowledge and training is the way to increase your survival chances in avalanche terrain. Stay humble in the mountains and know your limits. Even something so simple as route choice could kill you. It’s relevant this year and every year, as every slope that is capable of having an avalanche, eventually will. Knowing when not to ski that slope will save your life. GET THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT (and train with it): The minimum would be; beacon, probe, shovel and first aid kit.
In the case of your beacon, it should be turned on and worn over your base layer (not your jacket). GET LOCAL KNOWLEDGE: Talk to people who know the area, or have been there recently. Perform ‘active tests,’ dig a pit to establish a history of the snow pack, and do some pit tests. If you’re standing at the top of a run deliberating, that’s your gut telling you “don’t do it”. GET EDUCATION: Ideally every backcountry traveller would have a multi-day course under their belt. Avalanche professionals stay alive by using a system or ritual every time they go into the mountains, and this helps take desire out of the equation. Learning a method like this is a must. WORK AS A TEAM: Don’t ski out of bounds solo, use collective knowledge, talk about conditions and terrain with your friends. Pass on your knowledge and listen to others. Don’t be a part of an ignorant culture, spread good messages, and be real about where your limits are. Without humility none of your expertise, experience, rescue gear or skills matter.

THE internet is transforming how real estate is sold, with agents reporting most buyers check out properties online before actually viewing them. But while this tool is important to broaden the number of buyers that your home appeals to, remember not to dismiss other methods for selling your property. And if you’re planning to list your property, it’s important to remember to also gain good local coverage. Real estate representative Annelies Zirknitzer/Robin Ford from RT Edgar Alpine Real Estate said local agents do a lot more to support the initial impression formed on searching the internet. “They capture not only the scope of the buyer’s needs, but also their imagination,â€? Ms Zirknitzer said. “One of our keys to marketing the property locally is to have targeted marketing material. “These include yers, window displays, cards, brochures and local newspapers. “So even if potential buyers are not quite ready to buy they can take the material awayâ€?. Agents’ shop windows show potential buyers – visitors, who stroll around prospective resorts what is for sale, seven days a week. Ms Zirknitzer said the internet was a useful support tool – a bit like a shop window, where people get a general idea of properties, locations and a contact point. Emails to the agent often follow on from peoples’ search of the internet. “Agents also provide local knowledge which may not be covered on the internet, such as proximity to facilities, bus routes, plans, ski slopes and other facilities and activities,â€? Ms Zirknitzer said. “Online or ofine buyers in
regional areas still need local knowledge to counteract false expectations,� she said. “And we have access to the local information and sales data that’s quick and reliable� “This provides on-the-spot information about the area�. For sellers, the agent knows what prices local properties have been fetching, what buyers want, which locals are interested upsizing or downsizing. They also have information on the mountain, places to which local businesses may need staff, and any plans the council may have for the town or shire.
