would be interested in a tow at Mt Buller at the club’s 1948 annual general meeting. On July 3, 1949 a little over a year after the idea was ďŹ rst raised, the ďŹ rst skiers lined up to use Mt Buller’s ďŹ rst lift.
Rob’s simple question had begun the gradual shift to lifted downhill skiing on the mountain. With general acclamation the motion was carried, only to be met with deathly silence
when the chairman asked who would lead the project. It was then quickly suggested that as it was Rob’s idea he should lead the project and with just a brief hesitation Rob agreed.
The Bourke Street rope tow was converted to a nutcracker in 1950, with a further eight lifts installed over the next 10 years, six rope-tows and two T-bars, marking the beginning of more than 20 years of competition between Orange and Blue lifts.
