Like many good ideas, Mt Buller’s ďŹ rst lift began with a simple question, when Ski Club of Victoria (SCV) member Rob Summers queried whether members

would be interested in a tow at Mt Buller at the club’s 1948 annual general meeting.

On July 3, 1949 a little over a year after the idea was ďŹ rst raised, the ďŹ rst skiers lined up to use Mt Buller’s ďŹ rst lift.

Rob’s simple question had begun the gradual shift to lifted downhill skiing on the mountain.

With general acclamation the motion was carried, only to be met with deathly silence

when the chairman asked who would lead the project.

It was then quickly suggested that as it was Rob’s idea he should lead the project and with just a brief hesitation Rob agreed.

The Bourke Street rope tow was converted to a nutcracker in 1950, with a further eight lifts installed over the next 10 years, six rope-tows and two T-bars, marking the beginning of more than 20 years of competition between Orange and Blue lifts.

Buller celebrates 70 years of ‘lifting’ Ŷ

The day after the opening of the first tow rope the Herald newspaper reported: ‘The tow carries skiers up 200 vertical feet in a minute, over a length of 300 yards.

‘It gives more skiing in a couple of hours than sportsmen would normally get in a week.

Each round trip takes about four minutes, where previously it took half an hour. Volunteers built the

tow in six months. It cost about £550’- the Herald report said.

The design was inspired by the early rope tows appearing in Canada and the USA in the 1930s, basically a car or truck jacked up on blocks, with a rope looped around a wheel rim, but with scavenged parts to suit Australia’s post-war rationing.

It featured a drive unit chassis fabricated by Anchor Engineering from a variety of donated parts

(axle, gearbox, tail shaft, radiator etc) which was driven by a Chevrolet 6 truck engine modified to run on kerosene by Rob’s (Summers) son Merrick and a 370m rope made to order by Kinnears.

Bourke Street was selected as the best location and permission obtained to cut a track for the tow through the snow gums alongside Bourke Street, separating skiers from those riding the lift.

Today the tow ropes are long gone and the mountain boasts some 22 lifts covering more than 300 hectares of terrain including the latest state-of-the-art $6 million six seater lift.

Mt Buller is now home to the most modern lift network in Australia and it’s all thanks to the foresight of Rob Summers and the members of Ski Club Victoria all those 70 years ago.

Fight MND with an ice bucket

Big Freeze is coming to Mt Buller After the success of the Big Freeze event at the MCG, now in its 5th year, Off-Piste Bar at Alpine Retreat is thrilled to be hosting the Big Buller Freeze for the first time on Mt Buller.

Special guest will be ex-Melbourne star David Neitz kicking off with a pre-game chat from 7pm at the bar.

Come half-time, the freezing really begins as David and two brave bartenders take part in the Fight MND Ice Bucket Challenge out in the snow.

After that it’s back inside for the second half of the footy, followed by live music from another ex-Melbourne legend, Russell “Robbo” Robertson on the Off-Piste Bar stage, from 10pm.

READY FOR USE: Although not quite complete as yet, the extended carpark on Corn Hill can be used during busy times this season, and at the end of winter, will be sealed.

New carpark unveiled THE topography of Mt Buller has always presented challenges in trying to accommodate the large number of vehicles streaming to the resort on busy weekends.

This has been particularly evident in recent years due to continuing population growth in Melbourne and fabulous snow conditions in the Alps.

Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management Board’s projects and infrastructure manager, Kirsten Alexander, said the board had responded to this challenge by developing an additional carpark along Corn Hill Road.

Costing more than $1 million this new carpark

will increase on-mountain parking capacity by approximately 220 cars or eight per cent.

“A section will be reserved for visitors heading to the Sled Dogs, which have continued to grow in popularity in recent years,” Kirsten said.

A new helipad has been included, so there is a dedicated area for use in medical emergencies where pilots can land regardless of wind direction.

“The ski trail from Mt Buller to Mt Stirling has also been re-aligned and re-graded around the edge of the carpark to ensure cross-country enthusiasts can continue to ski all the way through to Corn Hill

Road,” she said.

Kirsten confirmed that this won’t stop the new carpark being swung into operation during busy periods throughout 2019 and helping improve the experience of visitors driving to Mt Buller.

“The carpark will be used for overnight vehicles, meaning more day visitors can park in the two CSIR carparks and they are closer to the Celia’s toboggan slope and the courtesy bus to the Mt Buller village,” Kirsten said.

Early snowfalls meant the final bitumen layer couldn’t be finished before opening weekend, and will now be completed after the 2019 snow season.

Medical Rescue is on hand ACCIDENTS happen.

And this is particularly true for snow lovers - visitors, skiers, boarders or just plain snow players - when visiting Mt Buller.

But rest assured, on hand are a medical team from the Mt Buller Medical Centre, along with ski patrol rescue and Ambulance Victoria.

Over summer Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management Board completed a public tender for medical services which included the evaluation team - a representative from the ratepayers and Ski Patrol, and a long term contract was awarded to Medical Rescue.

Medical Rescue has extensive alpine experience from their work at five New Zealand mountains, and also has a number of other medical elements to their business.

But following an accident on Tuesday, June 25 where a man slipped on stairs in the village square, hitting his head and suffering injuries, RMB chief executive officer Mark Bennetts has had to reassure that the medical centre, with qualified nurses and doctors, are there when needed.

“I was informed at about 8.30am on Tuesday last week that a TravelSafe driver, ap-

peared to have slipped or stumbled when going up the stairs beside the clock tower and hurt himself badly,” Mr Bennetts said.

“The stairs were clear and not icy.”

However, Mr Bennetts was not made aware that the man had been taken to the medical centre before being taken to Mansfield District Hospital.

“I didn’t know that he’d gone to the medical centre; I did know he was taken to Mansfield hospital, and I received a report at 9.50am that thankfully, all indicators were okay,” he said.

Mr Bennetts said he had spoken with Medical Rescue, who confirmed that a staff member had told the injured man and his rescuers that the centre was not open at the time, but they could call a doctor or they could wait until 10am and get staff rates.

“Other than the staff member believing she offered to get the doctor, the man’s helpers said they’d just take him to Mansfield,” Mr Bennetts said.

“Regardless, her response was not correct or appropriate.

“While the medical centre has its opening hours, it also has a doctor, nurse and radiographer on call outside those hours for the whole season.

“The doctor was on site and could have seen the man on the spot.

“The staff member did report her conversation to the doctor almost immediately, who counselled her on what she had said and then called Mansfield hospital to advise them that the man was on his way.

“Ambulance Victoria is also on site, has direct access to the doctor and is able to bring patients into the clinic after hours,” Mr Bennetts said.

“The same goes for Ski Patrol.”

There is a sign on the medical centre door advising people to call 000 for emergencies, and providing a phone number to call if they want to be connected to the on-mountain doctor.

If people call the medical centre out of hours, then they receive a similar after hours message.

Mr Bennetts said he was sorry for the past incident but assured everyone that services are available at all hours.

He said RMB refreshed the reception area of the medical centre over summer to make it more comfortable and professional and it remodelled the treatment area to allow installation of a fifth bed.

How many years have you been coming to Buller? All my life, I first started skiing at two years of age.

IT was pure chance that Mark (Woody) Woodsford even ventured to Mt Buller.

He grew up in Bordertown, South Australia where his father had a hotel called The Woolshed Inn (built circa 1858).

Woody Snr was in a squadron from SA/Vic and decided he wanted to host a reunion.

One attendee was Ted Bambridge.

Coincidently Ted and his family were members of Peringa Lodge (the current site of Malamute).

It was 1969, Woody was 15 and the Bambridge family invited him to join them on their annual holiday to Mt Buller.

Ted and wife Jennie were founding members of the original Peringa Ski Club, built in the mid1960s.

It was Woody’s first taste of skiing and the beginning of a lifelong love affair.

As an 18-year-old Woody started doing trips to Mt Buller.

Woody tells me he was pretty cool back in the day, cruisin’ to Buller in his Holden HQ Sandman panel-van, lime green, fully decked out with curtains and wall-to-wall carpet… the classic ‘70s shagin’ wagon.

Cross stitched and pinned - cost about $4000.

It was a 10 hour trip to Buller and Woody did an annual trip until 1976.

Woody’s parents sold The Woolshed Inn business in 1976, and looking for something to do, Woody decided to do a season at Mt Buller.

Ted and Jennie knew Bill and Joan Duff, the owners of Bill Duff Ski Hire located on Summit Rd, just below the Abom.

They provided the introduction, and so young Woody began work with the Duffs, while at the same time managing Peringa Ski Club.

Woody quickly embraced the life of a ski bum, travelling to Ischgl, Austria at the end of his first Buller season to ‘learn to ski’.

bum, Woody soon realised that having enough money to ski was likely to become an issue and so the solution was to do the ski school hiring clinic with the Austrian Ski School which was linked to Orange Lifts.

Walter Fröis was the ski school director and Paul Romagna ran the clinic.

Back then there were 35 instructors in the ski school - today there are 300 plus.

Life as part of the ski school was a total blast.

Personalities such as Karl Vallant, brothers Peter, Walter and Hannes Strolz, Mike Porter, Jorge Dutschke and Rene Zeller all set a cracking pace both on and off the snow.

On wet days, when they finished work they would retreat to the old wooden ski school building, pull out the schnapps and start their drinking games.

If they were planning a night out (which was often), they would go to bed at 4pm after work, get up at 9pm, have dinner and then go out until 4am - night after night.

The Whitt and Arlberg (where

Molly Meldrum was resident DJ for a couple of seasons) were favourites.

But most of the shenanigans took place at The Enzian Bar in Kooroora… often till sunrise.

Enrst Forras ran the place and Hans Grimus (GM of Orange Lifts and the Austrian Ski School) was frequently the ring leader.

The ‘ziggy zaggies’ were huge and once involved, there was no escape.

In the early ‘80s Woody became the kids’ ski school supervisor - remaining in the role until 1989.

Between 1978 and 1995 Woody did back-to-back winters for virtually 17 consecutive years.

He worked in Klösterle, Austria, Park City Utah, as well as Badger Pass CA (in Yosemite National Park), where he met Martha Rowe.

And then of course Woody completed 10 years in Vail Colorado.

Falling head over heels for Martha lead to marriage in 1985, and this made life a little easier as Woody now had a Green Card.

In 1990 he went and lived in

Auburn, California for a year.

Brian McGuire had managed Mt Buller Guest Services, race department and had been the ski school director.

He was from Grand Rapids Michigan but had been supervising in Vail and got Woody the job.

Woody took privates and developed his own clientele.

In 1994 Woody received a 500 Pin for 500 requested hours at the ski school over the season.

There were only 12 instructors that achieved that record in that season, out of 1500 instructors across Vail and Beaver Creek.

Woody endeavoured to start a wetsuit importing business, but in truth, he was a mountain man and Mt Buller was calling.

In 1991 Woody came back to Mt Buller and in 1992, with Mark Borderick, set up Fun Photos, in the old Auski building where the village toboggan park is now located.

Mark ‘B’ remained in the business for only a few years before moving overseas to live.

Woody and Martha had Gracie in 1995, and Woody’s passion and enthusiasm for photography continued to flourish.

In around 1996 Fun Photos moved in to the tunnel below the now Bourke St Express 6-seater.

Back then it was the walkway through to the Blue Bullet 1 lift from the village centre.

When the tunnel went, Fun Photos moved into the space between Buller Sports and the current supermarket, facing George’s Ski Hire.

And then Fun Photos ended up in the old Kooroora building for more than 10 years.

In all, Woody owned and operated the Fun Photos business for 23 years.

Sadly, in the end, mobile phones saw the death of the business.

In 2007 Woody got his real estate licence and established Mark Woodsford Alpine Real Estate but for the past five years has operated under the umbrella of RT Edgar.

A wonderful journey, a true gentleman, and a genuine personality of our resort - Mark Woodsford, self-appointed mayor of Mt Buller.

New portable snow factory already proving its worth

A NEW portable SF100 snow factory and associated electrical infrastructure costing more than $1 million has arrived at Mt Buller this season, courtesy of the snowmaking partnership between Buller Ski Lifts and the Resort Management Board.

The new TechnoAlpin snow factory is able to produce 100m3 of snow per day and complements the 220m3 unit permanently installed near the top of the Bourke Street Express lift.

Resort chief executive officer Mark Bennetts said the portability of the new snow factory had already proven its worth, making snow at the Ski School and lower section of Bourke Street to ensure everything was

ready to open on June 1.

It was then moved to the village snow play park to ensure visitors could enjoy this newly expanded area over the Queen’s Birthday weekend, before moving back to Bourke Street after the recent heavy rains.

The snow factory can also be positioned adjacent to the Magic Forrest and at the Celia’s toboggan slope to help produce snow in these important areas.

Mr Bennetts said the portability of this new factory is a huge benefit to the mountain and that it is sure to be in heavy demand making snow throughout this and subsequent seasons.

NEW WALKS: New stairways from three car parks and from the Celia’s to the village have been constructed to give pedestrians better safety access.

Pedestrian safety improved

REGULAR visitors to Mt Buller will have seen the dangers of pedestrians walking along the roadside from their carpark to the Northside Lift or Celia’s toboggan park for many years.

Long term car parking supervisor, Jimmy Hughes, now in his 42nd year at the resort, said the Resort Management Board had worked

to address this issue and improve safety for pedestrians by installing three new sets of stairs before the 2019 snow season.

“One set connects the Chalet carpark to the Walkers carpark, so that pedestrians can avoid walking on the side of the road around a blind corner,” Jimmy said.

The making of Delatite Schnapps

DAVID and Catherine Ritchie of the Delatite Winery have wanted to make schnapps for years.

However, it was a meeting of the minds that ďŹ nally brought this long-held dream into fruition.

Hank Thierry had recently established Swiftcrest Still on Monkey Gully Road, between MansďŹ eld and Goughs Bay. Built from scratch, the still was off-grid and used the renewable wood from the property as fuel for the old wood-ďŹ re boiler.

Hank was yet to produce any spirits from his still, but after chatting with long-time friend David Ritchie, they decided to embark on the schnapps adventure together.

Hank and David share similar principles of production where the emphasis is on local, sustainable produce farmed through biodynamic methods.

It was these values that saw Hank reach out to Kevin Marriott from Tolmie Gold Saffron and Brian Lewis, beekeeper, to join the collaboration.

David is more a purist at heart and

his initial vision had been to produce simple quality schnapps from the GewĂźrztraminer wine that the Delatite Winery is renowned for.

It was Hankâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s suggestion to incorporate honey and saffron into another batch. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s get it locally and letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s try,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all within 20 kilometres.â&#x20AC;?

So David made the wine - 1000 litres of ďŹ ltered wine ready for bottling - and Hank distilled it, reducing it down from 12 per cent alcohol to a pure 95 per cent proof. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The proof is then diluted with spring fed water,â&#x20AC;? said David, â&#x20AC;?direct from the Great Dividing Range.â&#x20AC;?

Once the alcohol content is brought back to 20 per cent the saffron and raw honey are infused into the spirit. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is the old style way of doing it,â&#x20AC;?

David said.

The honey and saffron blend is 20 per cent proof and the pure Gewurztraminer base is an eye-watering 42 per cent proof.

In relation to quality control and taste-testing, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got to be very care-

ful with that,â&#x20AC;? said David.

Once they had perfected their product, it was time to involve more locals in the project.

It is a small batch product from high quality ingredients and needed to be presented accordingly.

Davidâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s daughter Polly took on the task of sourcing bottling and alongside Henry Eisner, whose profession is marketing and graphics, they designed the labelling. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s based on an old-style ski poster,

with the mountain in the background altered to reďŹ&#x201A;ect a familiar sight - our own Mt Buller,â&#x20AC;? said David.

As well as the Delatite Winery, it is the Pension Grimus on Mt Buller that will stock the schnapps.

From the rolling alpine town of Tolmie to the snowy altitudes of Mt Buller, from the back roads of MansďŹ eld to the beauty of the Delatite, this group of small producers has collaborated to produce an intrinsically local product.

Snow marketing across the Alps VICTORIAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S alpine resorts have combined forces to create an exciting new marketing campaign aimed at promoting midweek snow holidays to Melbourne snow lovers.

The campaign sees Mt Buller, Mt Stirling, Mt Hotham, Falls Creek, Mt Baw Baw, Lake Mountain and Dinner Plain promote some of the best snow holiday deals ever offered, marketing via a dynamic campaign managed

by Tourism North East, the regional tourism board for Victoriaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s High Country.

The campaign launched with a bang last week, with a video stream from Mt Buller beaming live to a digital billboard placed in a high-trafďŹ c area of Southern Cross Station, giving commuters the chance to interact in real-time with those on the mountain.

This activation, created by Tourism North Eastâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s media agency, Cole Media, was part of a month-long â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Station Dominationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, which sees the critical transport hub blanketed in snow imagery and video from

June 10 to July 7, and weekly experiential activations taking place.

Commuters will get the chance to pat a husky sled dog, have their photo taken on a ski-run background or even bring the kids to get the feeling of snowboarding with a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Little Shreddersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; setup.

The alpine resorts contribute over $1 billion in gross domestic product annually.

In 2019 marketing efforts are taking a new and innovative angle: under the tagline Your Midweek Lift, this

Redeveloped snowplay park ready to go

This past summer has been no exception and pedestrian safety, expanded visitor experience and carparking were all on the agenda.

Visitors to Mt Buller will also notice signiďŹ cant improvements to the village snowplay park this winter.

The Resort Management Boardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sales and development manager Matt Elliott said extensive works have just been ďŹ nished to make the park safer, easier to access, more fun and to increase capacity. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are three different gradients rated
