MT BULLER was covered in a fresh dump of snow last Friday, with 20cm falling at the resort over the previous 24 hours.

Snow bunnies were celebrating this latest snowfall, which saw freezing temperatures bring fresh fluffy powder meaning skiers and boarders could enjoy even more terrain.

And announced late on Friday 21 lifts were expected to be operating over the weekend.

Group manager of marketing, sales and events for Mt Buller Resort Management, Gillian Dobson, welcomed the snowfalls.

“This fresh dump of snow has given us a fantastic top up,” Gillian said.

“The sub-zero temperatures overnight meant the snow was light, fresh and fluffy – just the way we love it.

“It was perfect timing too, with school holidays already cranking up here and more snow forecast in the coming

days, it’s the perfect time to join us here on top of the world,” Gillian said.

“We were able to open more lifts with this fresh snow, and were excited to hit some of our favourite terrain for the first time this season.”

This latest snowfall brought Mt Buller’s average depth including manmade snow to 90cm, with very good skiing across the resort.

Mt Buller is also celebrating Kids’ Week all week long, with the resort offering plenty of special events and activities for its littlest visitors.

Along with fresh snow and lots of kids’ activities, visitor numbers began to climb for the first time this season.

Week three of the season saw Mt Buller visitor number on the rise although Mt Stirling is yet to kick off.

Some 10,263 people ventured to Mt Buller while 165 sought out the seclusion of Mt Stirling.

recorded up until the beginning of week three, this was a 148 per cent rise from the 2015 comparison figure for the same week.

Year-to-date figures are up also by seven per cent from the previous year with 18,236 visitors to Mt Buller compared to 17,016 in 2015.

The lower numbers in the first two weeks of the season was a reflection of no snow - but then, when snow kicked in, numbers started to pick up.

Overall visitation to all resorts for week three of this season was 22,335 compared to 10,521 in 2015 – an increase of a massive 112 per cent.

Roads, especially those which wind their way up and down the mountain are often wet and slippery with low visibility.

More snow on the way WITH fresh snow on the ground last week it was no surprise that car parking was at a premium over the weekend.

Some 1350 cars were parked for day visitors on Saturday and more than 1400 on the Sunday with Monday not quite so busy but still a lot of visitors crowding the mountain.

This was good to see especially with families enjoying school holidays on Buller.

On Monday, Lauren Staveley reported the mountain was bathed in clear skies and cold temperatures.

But on the horizon was forecast more snow to roll in later Monday and continue

through this week.

The cold overnight low of -2.4 made for firm, hard packed snow on Monday.

With a 95 per cent chance of snow it was smiles all round for mountain folk.

“We are expecting the flakes to continue falling throughout the week,” Lauren said.

“There is a good to very good cover out there on the open terrain.

“The groomers did an excellent job last night smoothing Family Run, Little Buller Spur, Summit and Shakey Knees.

“Little Buller Spur is the pick of the day today so I’ll see you out there,” she reported.

Call those who care – CFA are on hand to help you WHEN there is a problem on Mt Buller who do you go to?

One of the first to respond when there is a problem on Buller is the CFA – on hand 24 hours a day and ready to roll.

Mt Buller CFA is somewhat unique in that it is manned by volunteers but also has, during winter months only, an operations officer to oversee and help others.

Paul Scragg is that officer for the 2016 season, standing in for Paul Horton this year.

With a team of some 15

plus volunteers, Paul just doesn’t sit around waiting for a fire call out but is on hand to help out wherever and whenever he is needed.

“My job is to support the CFA Brigade but also to assist the various mountain managers with their procedures – just help them out with anything I can do,” he said.

Call outs over winter on the mountain are mainly alarms going off – no real action needed but response is important anyway just in case, so the boys and girls turn out.

Last year there was one serious chimney fire which was acted on very quickly plus a couple of searches at which members assisted.

And Mt Buller has a one off over snow four wheel drive unit – known as the ‘alpine vehicle’ which converts from a normal 4wd to an over snow with special ‘cat’ tractions fitted for the season.

“This is very quick and can go anywhere,” Paul said.

“It is a LandCruiser with tracks and is a lot more manoeuvrable and can go

over any terrain to help in rescues,” he said.

Volunteers on Mt Buller vary from season to season depending on the work placements – but many of the regulars, such as current captain Ewen McCaskill, live and work on the hill all year round and are on standby all year round.

By RHYLL McCORMACK MOUNT Buller and Mount Stirling recorded a combined increase in summer visitors of almost 15 per cent over the 2015–2016 summer period.

Crediting the increase to several successful events, and a steady population of mountain bike riders, the two resorts continue to impress.

For the first time in the mountain’s history, the Buller/ Stirling entry gates were manned by staff, providing an insight into visitation numbers and patterns.

“The resort entry point at Mirimbah (was manned) in order to gather accurate data

about the resorts’ summer visitor market,” ARMB media and marketing officer, Kate Monahan, said.

“This proved to be a very worthwhile exercise, providing insight into visitor numbers and days, where these visitors are coming from, what activities they were taking part in and more.

“Staffing the resort entry point also provided a valuable information service for visitors before they arrived in the village, with staff welcoming guests to the resort, advising them which businesses were open and guiding them through the summer mountain experience.”

The data collected highlighted the main reasons for visiting Mt Buller, which in-

cluded sightseeing, mountain biking, walking and hiking, event attendance and running.

Visitors to Mt Stirling were attracted because of Craig’s Hut, general four wheel driving and camping.

Those visiting the area over summer were predominantly from Victoria, although a strong number of interstate guests were also recorded.

International visitors came from the USA, UK, Europe, China and Singapore, among other places.

“All in all, Mt Buller and Mt Stirling continue to be attractive summer destinations for a range of visitors taking part in numerous activities and events,” Ms Monahan said.

Big moves and new look for Maisanos’ Black Cockatoo the Black Cockatoo and the bush and have kept that theme going throughout the renovations.

The Apres Bar has now become ‘The Bird Cage’ and is open from early morning for breakfasts to late evening for socialising and drinks.

The restaurant opened its doors on June 24 for the first diners who dined in style in the new look venue.

The large open fire has been retained and is the ‘heart-h’ of the venue where pre-dinner cocktails can be enjoyed.

The walls may seem dark but have taken on the hue of charred wood.

The kitchen too has changed and a large charcoal oven has been installed where sumptuous dinners with that smoked flavour can be cooked up.

JOE and Jane Maisano more than doubled their commercial interests on Mt Buller this season.

Already well experienced in running hospitality businesses, the couple took on a massive exercise of revamping the Black Cockatoo Restaurant, the former Apres Bar and Black Cockatoo bar over the past summer break.

They already operate the Kooroora Hotel on Buller and a similar hotel on Mt Hotham.

Jane explained that taking on the additional bars and restaurant they also saw the need to make a more permanent move to Buller and enrolled their two children into the mountain schools.

“They are just loving it,” Jane said, “and they are looking forward to taking part in the skiing and schooling program which the mountain offers over term three.

No drone zone at Mount Buller Remotely piloted aircraft (also known as drones or UAVs) have exploded into popularity over the last few years.

However, most owners don’t understand the laws that apply to their use, and can unintentionally land themselves in hot water by operating these aircraft outside of where and how it is permitted.

Operators of remote aircraft should be

aware that flying in the vicinity of Mt Buller is prohibited without prior authorisation and proper certification from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.

People are often unaware that the Mt Buller and Mt Stirling Alpine Resorts contain several recognised helicopter landing sites, and is considered an aerodrome for flying operations.

This means that

remote aircraft must not be operated within 4.5 kilometres of the resort due to the serious hazard posed to manned aircraft.

Furthermore, remote aircraft must not be flown near unrelated buildings, vehicles, people and populous locations such as ski runs or gathering areas.

Anyone witnessing the flying of a drone in a prohibited area should report it to the police at

Mt Buller by calling 000 as officers may be out on patrol and not at the station.

Operators found to be flying remote aircraft within the resort area may be fined $622 when operated without the authority of the Resort Management Board, and/ or have their equipment seized by police and charged with offences under the Civil Aviation Safety Regulations 1998.

Winter visitors being counted at all resorts A SYSTEMATIC program of collecting and collating winter visitation statistics to each of the Victorian Alpine Resorts is a project instigated by the Alpine Resorts Co-ordinating Council.

Council publishes online visitation estimates for each Alpine Resort on a weekly basis during the winter season.

The visitation statistics are based on weekly gate entry data as well as seasonal pass holder data.

The weekly visitor numbers collected throughout the winter season include an estimate of season pass visitation.

This estimate is adjusted at the end of the winter season using the returns of seasonal pass holder survey forms to create a final ‘end of season visitor result’.

WHY do we need to wax our skis and snowboards?

Just like the steel edges that oxidise, known as rust, the polyethylene base material oxidises as well.

The oxidation can have a milky white appearance and feels furry to the touch.

A ski or board base left un-waxed over summer or ridden without being waxed will oxidise quite quickly.

Waxing frequently prevents the base material from oxidising as well as helping with the glide characteristics.

Waxing over the top of the oxidation will not entirely solve the problem.

In the short term the ski or board may run a little better but once the surface wax has gone you are back riding on a furry base that could be very slow.

In an ideal world we should all wax our skis or snowboard after nearly every day or two.

You can’t wax them too much.

Hot waxing gives the best penetration of the base.

There are other DIY options available such as rub-on, paste or even liquid waxes.

If you’re unsure what is the best for your skis or board check with your local ski/board shop repair technician.

At Bumps we identified years ago that most skiers and boarders simply don’t wax their skis or boards nearly enough.

Iconic Arlberg Hotel is on the market

By ROB AIVATOGLOU THE Arlberg is for sale.

Negotiations are under way.

John Perks and Carol McDonald have decided it’s time to move on to greener pastures.

Today, the Arlberg is a vastly different establishment from the one I grew up with.

So I decided to have a coffee with John and reminisce over his history with the mountain and the Arlberg in particular.

John’s first links with Buller commenced in 1978 when he and Neville Kay purchased Mansfield Mt Buller Bus Lines.

Six years later John took over the business, and also acquired Ski Centre Mansfield and the Mirimbah Store.

In 1987 John tried to buy Alpine Retreat but for a range of reasons, it fell through at the final hurdle.

Then in 1988 John formed a syndicate through his relationship with Joe Pulitano and purchased The Arlberg, Kooroora and Arlberg Merrijig.

Subsequently MMBL was transitioned into the group.

He successfully steered all businesses but 1993 was a tough snow season with max depth of only 40cm (with most of the season below 20cm).

At that time there were 350 staff across seven locations spread between Mansfield and Buller.

With mounting pressures the decision to sell Ski Centre Mansfield (to the Aldinger family) and Arlberg Merrijig was undertaken

that year, and Kooroora and MMBL followed in 1994.

These were the days when Arlberg was a rocking pub.

There was the huge main bar.

Nooky’s Restaurant was always in demand with great food and wonderful atmosphere.

Downstairs was the intimate Cellar Bar, complete with piano, where Billy Joel’s Piano Man reverberated every night around 3am.

The Arlberg was open till 5am and was party central.

How is this for a line up… Joe Camilleri & the Black Sorrows, Linda & Vicka Bull, Billy Thorpe & the Aztecs, Hoodoo Gurus, Hunters & Collectors, Painters & Dockers, Mark Seymour, and who could ever forget Relax with Max? There would be a team of 13 crowd controllers and the place would be jumping until 5am.

Some 1500 patrons would squeeze in - some sneaking in through guests’ bedrooms - with another 500 queued up at the front door on Bourke Street.

In fact, to clear the crowd, John would offer people waiting in line a free taxi ride to Kooroora and free first pot.

Different times.

Of course all this was extremely draining for management and it became increasingly difficult to fill rooms.

So in 1996 the decision was made to become a family entertainment environment.

The bar was reduced by 800m2 and replaced by apartments and rooms, all for the greater good.

COOKING UP IN A STORM: Mt Buller welcomed popular (and very tall) TV chef Fast Ed and the Better Homes & Gardens team recently. Ed rustled up a few hearty winter warmers including a Hungarian style pork stew and luxuriously rich hot chocolates that were a sensation on Bourke Street. He even created a sticky lemon delicious pudding that was cooked in a Dutch oven in the fire at the Kooroora Hotel. During his visit he dropped in for the early morning snow report with Alex and it is reported he can’t wait to come back for a ski. The show is scheduled to air this month - watch for the date.

Buller identity marries the love of his life MT BULLER identity David Clark recently married the love of his life, Katie Thorn.

Dave is often recognised when announcing guests and events in Mt Buller’s Village Square and is part of the marketing team.

“We had lots of Buller guests and Anton Grimus did his Grimus Grind Coffee Car for the guests (and maybe he did shotskis as well),” Dave said when back on the mountain.

“We were married at a private house near Red Hill on April 30 – just in time for winter and not too hot for us cold fanatics,” Dave said.

“Anton was there with his truck serving coffees and schnapps from a shotski.

“We were very lucky with the weather – there was a huge storm with torrential rain, hail, lightning, etc about 3am.”

THE annual Mark Adams Ski/Golf day was held last Friday.

This was the 16th event held to raise money for the snowsports programs of the area’s primary and secondary schools.

Mansfield Secondary College snowsports co-ordinator, Geoff Walker, and MSC snowsports captains Ellie May and Patrick Cahill thanked the more than 70 competitors for their time and the money raised.

The 2016 edition of the day raised more than $21,000.

After a morning of skiing and an afternoon of golf, all retired to the Mansfield Golf Club for the presentations.

Entries open for Buller’s photo competition and film festival ENTRIES are now open for Mt Buller’s annual Peak Pics Photography Competition, as well as the Mt Buller Short Film Festival, with photographers and filmmakers invited to submit their best work for the chance to win some great prizes.

Open to photographers of all levels of experience, from enthusiastic amateurs to savvy professionals, Peak Pics consists of four categories comprising of People, Landscape, Action and Light, under the theme “Never Miss a Moment”.

A judging committee, headed by Mt Buller photographer Mark Ashkanasy, will select up to 12 finalists, including one winner from each of the four categories.

The collection of photographs will be framed and showcased in an artistic display in the Alpine Central building at the resort.

The Mt Buller Short Film Festival also returns for its

sixth year, with filmmakers encouraged to enter their original short films showcasing their mountain adventures.

Finalists will be selected by an expert judging panel and shown on the big screen at the 180-seat Mt Buller Cinema during a gala screening on Saturday, August 13.

Entries close on Friday, July 31.

Park blitz in lead up to roads’ seasonal closures AUTHORISED officers from Parks Victoria undertook an enforcement blitz in the Alpine and Mitchell River National Parks during the long weekend in June prior to the annual seasonal gate closures period.

Parks Victoria’s regional enforcement co-ordinator Martin Downs said they were happy with campers and visitors’ behaviour, although a number of infringement notices were still issued in relation to campfires, dog and litter related offences, as well as a firearm matter.

The seasonal closures are currently in place for all vehicle traffic including at the Howqua Hills Historic Area, Mt Baw Baw, Snowy River, Mount Buffalo and Alpine National Parks.

The seasonal closures are in place for the safety of park visitors and to prevent erosion during the wetter months as rain and snow softens tracks and make them vulnerable to damage. The gates are scheduled to re-open on Thursday, October 27.

Authorised officers from Parks Victoria, Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP), Victoria Police and the Game Management Authority will be conducting regular patrol activities.

Penalties for breaching seasonal closures and driving off road with any class vehicle are severe and may result in court prosecution.

Anyone can report incidents of vehicles driving off road or gate breaches to Parks Victoria (or DELWP).

All information reported is treated confidentially.
