Clydesdales make history delivering beer on Buller FOUR beautiful Clydesdale horses, Murphy, Parker, Al and Andy, clip-clopped their way into history at Mt Buller as the first Carlton Draught Clydesdales to make a delivery to a ski resort in Australia last Thursday. The Carlton Draught Clydesdales made a unique beer delivery to the alpine village at Mt Buller when the team hauled a 1.5 tonne wagon carrying some barrels into the

village for thirsty skiers. Murphy is the most senior horse in the line-up at 16 years old with 13 years’ experience, and Parker at just five years old only joined last year. The famous horses travel the country and are a popular sight with their shining harnesses to deliver beer where they go. Draught began back in the 1860s and was only replaced by motorised vans after World War II. Mt Buller and the Mansfield region has a long tradition of horsemanship and was the location for the classic ‘Man From Snowy River’ film. The Carlton Draught Clydesdales take part in more than 60 events around the country each year but this is a first to visit the snow.

“They are a Scottish breed so the cold weather is something they are built for but this is certainly something different for us,” said Glen Pate, the Clydesdale team manager. “It’s very special to bring them up the mountain for this delivery and it’s certainly the highest location we’ve been to.” Hospitality manager Harry Wellbourne enthusiastically received the rare delivery. “The ABOM has a rich
and colourful tradition but I don’t know if we’ve had our beer arrive on a horse drawn cart before. “We looked forward to pouring a few well-earned beers on the day.” It takes 45cm of steel to make each horseshoe for the Clydesdales and they get new shoes every 5-6 weeks. Each horse in the team weighs around 850kg and the team moves at around 5km/h.

More terrain opening in time for school holidays into the resort directly from the carparks and offering sightseeing rides. The Northside chairlift provides breathtaking views of the northern slopes and up to the summit as well as a thrilling ride over the tall mountain canopy. Visitors can ride the chairlift directly from the car park up to Spurs where there is a café and small snowplay zone. Mt Buller also commenced Twilight Sessions in the resort with extended entertainment, transport and snow play under lights in the village until 9pm on Saturday and Sunday nights. Twilight entertainment adds to the holiday vibe in the village square with fire pits for marshmallow roasting and entertainment on offer as the sun dips down. Extended hours for the shuttle buses to the car parks will encourage visitors to stay on into the evening for a meal, some snow play under the lights and stretch out their weekend experience.

THE cold snap arrived right on cue last week and following a few big nights of snowmaking skiers and snowboarders enjoyed the first turns of the winter on Little Buller Spur from Friday. With the start-up of Wombat lift it boosted the offering for school holidays with this popular blue run. Little Buller Spur is Mt Buller’s longest run at a legburning 2.5km. The resort has been channelling efforts to make snow and get this south-facing area ready. “The cold temperatures in recent nights have created perfect conditions for our snowmakers,” Buller Ski Lifts general manager Laurie Blampied said. “It’s perfect timing for our school holiday period and great to have more of the mountain ready for skiers and boarders to explore and enjoy as we roll into July.” Northside Express lift also commenced operations last weekend whisking visitors high

THE CUB Clydesdale team was a huge success on MT Buller last week with head groomsman Glen Plate saying they were ‘almost neighbours’ to Mansfield. The Clydesdales – originally from Scotland but the current team all Australian bred - are normally housed at Tallarook –just down the road. Children and adults alike enjoyed getting up close and very good friends with these gentle giants of the equine world. Below are a few of the hundreds of photos taken during the one hour visit.

Operation changes announced at Mt Buller FROM Saturday, July 1 high levels of visitation are predicted at Mt Buller. In preparation for this several strategies have been put in place for each weekend in July and August, with the focus on day visitors. Once on-mountain day visitor car parks, including overflow upper mountain car parks, are at capacity guests will be directed to park at Mirimbah (overflow day visitors will not be parked at the Plough Shed/chain bay 3). Additional shuttle buses will be utilised to transport visitors from the day and overflow car parks to the Village and back. Additional guest services staff will assist guests in the Village and the car parks. Day visitors are encouraged to arrive between 7am and 8am on Saturday or Sunday to save 50 per cent off the resort entry day price (overnight parking fees still apply, and applicable to the day rate only). If you arrive after lunch, you may be parked at Mirimbah and shuttled to and from the village. Further lift and ski area opening: on Friday, June 30 Wombat chair opened for the first time in winter 2017; Little Buller Spur and part of Wombat also opened for skiing and boarding; Northside chairlift opened for sightseeing and resort access on Saturday offering stunning views and a ride up to Spurs directly from the car parks; sightseeing will not be available on the Blue Bullet Chairlift from Saturday. With the additional lifts and terrain open lift pass pricing will adjust on Friday, ie full prices will go into effect and the Snow Guarantee conditions will be met. Mt Buller announced their first ‘Twilight Sessions’ this week, keeping the fun going until 8.30pm. Guests were provided with extended hours in the Village Snowplay and Toboggan Park, reduced day resort entry rates for late arrivals and Village Square live entertainment from 4pm-7pm. These events will continue every weekend throughout July and August, with twilight skiing/boarding beginning from this weekend, July 8. The car park shuttle will also operate until 9.30pm.

Kids’ week on Buller means fun time snowman competition, giant Hungry Hippos on Bourke Street and a race against their ski school friends. For when it gets a little chilly Mt Buller has catered for a range of free indoor activities on Thursday, July 6 between 4pm and 6pm, with indoor rock-climbing, trampolining and more. Mt Buller hasn’t forgotten the older kids though.
The Snowracer Giant Slalom Series provide an opportunity for a little competition and training ahead of the Victorian Interschool Snowsports Championships. The races are open to both primary and secondary students, for both skiing and boarding and will be run over two events. There are 180 spots up for grabs for each event, running

FANTASTIC to recently have a coffee with long time Apira member Wendy McGee. Wendy, a wonderful Mt Buller historian, has been a member since 1973 but the club dates back to 1948. Pre 1985, Apira was called API, Australian Postal Institute. Australia Post had provided the start-up funds and the club was open to all workers. There were originally 60 foundation members and 20 associate members with Kevin McDonald being the driving force behind the establishment of the club. All were Australian Postal Institute workers and although the name would indicate a connection with Australia Post, there was never a formal link. In 1985, the club was re-named Apira to make clear the fact that it was an unconnected entity. Blanche Dall, part of the original organising committee, is still a member today. Back in the late ‘40s, Apira was one of ďŹ ve clubs to be established at Mt Buller. The others were SCV, CSIR, the YHA and a commercial lodge built below the Skating Rink. Back in the day, passionate skiers would drive as far as they could up the mountain, often getting only as
far as White Bridge, then use horses and donkeys to transport food, clothing and lodging materials the rest of the way up the mountain. John Hilton-Wood, late owner of Blue Lifts, was the ďŹ rst paid (caretaker) permanent resident. His job was to light the coke heaters, start the generator and burn rubbish for one pound per week. There have been three re-developments of Apira - in the 1950s, 1968 and 1985. It started with 12 beds and now has 39 beds. Actually, back in the ‘50s and ‘60s, it was also unofďŹ cially known as ‘The Monastery’. There was a self-appointed ‘morals ofďŹ cer’, which policed the informal rule of no mixed bunk rooms. Men and women were segregated - men slept downstairs and women slept upstairs. There were actually few women members back then. But Wendy assures me it was in no way a monastery. My connection with Apira dates back to the very late ‘70s/early ‘80s when Steve Kyle and I began skiing together. Many members are good friends and a number of members have worked with us at George’s (Ski Hire) including the incomparable Paul Mouratidis.

One of the best things you can do for your body is to incorporate a solid strength training program around your ski/ board sessions. Both skiing and snowboarding demand a combination of both technique and muscle strength and flexibility. Generally, over the course of a day on the mountain you’re going to be working a lot of the same leg, arm and core muscles. The level of strength a person has will ultimately determine the degree to which they are able to endure the physical demands of the day.

STRENGTH can be described as the power or ability to resist force, strain or stress. The demands of skiing and snowboarding, the body, particularly the legs and core musculature, are required to hold certain positions for prolonged periods whilst, at the same time, absorbing substantial amounts of force and shock during each run. This is where a person’s strength and muscular endurance becomes necessary in order to maintain correct body position of the muscles and around the joints being used. By improving muscular strength and endurance, each joint is better able to maintain optimal position during each run which then, improves efficiency and reduces muscular fatigue. FATIGUE is one of the biggest factors in injury. It is not uncommon for skiers and boarders to get injured late in the day of a shred session when muscle fatigue is setting in, concentration is starting to fade and the ability to read the snow conditions is reduced. Building a huge aerobic and anaerobic base is key. Both skiing and snowboarding use completely different muscle groups to other more conventional types of cardiovascular exercise and everyday functional movements. In the gym fitness focus will add added benefits to your day on the mountain. When hitting the slopes, you will require great strength from your quadriceps, hamstrings and glutes as they help stabilise your body. The muscles of the thigh should be targeted, particularly the quadriceps. In addition, the strength around the hips and knees is vital for efficient skiing and snowboarding. Movement patterns such as squatting, lunging and straight leg deadlifts will not only help improve the neural recruitment of the muscle fibres but also increase the strength of those muscles. Not only that, but a strong upper body is needed when driving polls into the group and getting up from runs. Lat Pull downs, bench press, shoulder press, skull crushers and dips help improve your upper body strength and add to your core stability. Core stability and postural control is essential during skiing/boarding and is an important component of strength training. If you want to carve hard and fast you need to focus on core strength - Planking (and its 100 varieties) is where it’s at. Lastly, interval training is a great way to improve both stamina, strength and speed. This form of training is essential for improving the body’s ability to recover in between runs. The one last thing we all forget is to REST. Rest days and proper sleep is vital in the muscle strengthening process... and the best thing about it, its free! If you’re spending your hard-earned cash on an extended trip to the mountains, you really can’t afford to be lazy. Hit the slopes underprepared and it can be really easy to burn out. BULLER X blasted into the Australian alpine scene last year creating a new style of event for elite skiers. Extreme skiers who want to take part in this year’s event – providing there is enough snow – had just one week to gain votes from their families, friends and workmates – that was this week and the number of votes for each will be known by this weekend. Only the best are chosen to participate. This year snowboarders have been added to the event and there is also some healthy NSW v Victorian
rivalry to spice things up. Mt Buller locals who have their hats in the ring to date include Anton Grimus, Mitch Reeves, James Phillips, Torie Hamilton Wilson, Joey Corcoran, Watkin McLennan and boardercross Olympian Cam Bolton. Held in the style of big wave surf events, Buller X is an invitational event for elite athletes who are listed and then wait for conditions to ‘call the day’ when the event can run. The venue is Mt Buller’s steep and daunting chutes off the southern side of the summit.
Terrain that is challenging and consequential. Terrain that most of us would never consider attempting. Buller X raises awareness about the need for education before exploring side country and backcountry terrain and fosters a healthy respect for the mountains. Local families ski at Stirling free each Thursday
FREE VISIT: Mt Stirling is offering free entry, and discounted hire rates, for Mansfield residents who would like to visit the mountain any Thursday over the winter season.
FOR the second year in a row, Mt Stirling will offer free day passes to local families each Thursday throughout the snow season. Those interested in taking advantage of the offer need to show their driver’s licence – with local address – at the resort entry gate. To further encourage Mansfield residents to get slope side, Mt Stirling is also offering 10 per cent off food and drinks at the Mt Stirling Café. Stirling Experience is offering another deal which includes $5 for toboggan hire, a $59 cross country skiing experience – which includes equipment, a lesson and a tour guide – or a $39 snowshoe tour which includes snow shoe hire. “Mt Stirling is a fantastic place for visitors to come and experience its
natural beauty in both summer and winter, and we’re excited to be able to offer an affordable option for local families to visit Mt Stirling this season,” environmental manager Louise Perrin said. “The kids can head outside and enjoy cross country skiing, snow shoeing or tobogganing while the parents relax by the open fire in the cafe and enjoy a cup of coffee. “We really want locals to be able to experience our beautiful and unique mountain during winter.” For further information, phone 5777 6077. Mt Buller hosts Banff Mountain Film Festival LATE last month Mt Buller hosted the annual Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour for the ninth year running. The only snow resort in Australia to host the festival, the mountain’s cinema was packed out with almost 200 guests. A collection of awe-inspiring adventures - from rock climbing in the French Polynesian jungle to skiing in Iran; paragliding from the highest peak in Mexico to flying musicians in France’s Verdun Gorge - took viewers on a journey showcasing incredible
human feats, highlighting mountain culture, sporting ventures, and the environment. The two and a half hour presentation of short films and documentaries is selected from the top 80 entrants from the prestigious film competition held in Banff, Canada, every October before being toured globally. Screening every June at the Mt Buller cinema, 2018 will be sure to provide another round of thrilling, and thoughtprovoking films at the next Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour.
