SPRING may be here but it’s still winter at Mt Buller, with this week’s cold snap seeing 15cm of fresh snow fall on Tuesday.

Mt Buller has experienced one of the best seasons in recent years, with sensational conditions seeing record numbers flock to the resort for incredible skiing and boarding on some of Australia’s best terrain.

WHAT a great winter season this has been.

Lots of snow, great racing comps and plenty of visitors to both Mt Buller and Mt Stirling - setting new records, particularly for day visitors.

The Subaru Interschools held last week saw almost 3000 students take to the slopes with many of them heading along the pathway to international status.

Recently Mt Buller Mt Stirling CEO John Huber took the challenge to have a bucket of ice water thrown over him â&#x20AC;&#x201C; not too bad considering John spends a good deal of his time in minus degree temperatures anyway. Being brave he let the Abominable Snowman appear to do the trick. Among Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s three nominations to carry on the challenge was Mansfield Shire CEO David Roff who followed on a few days after Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s efforts. Well done John and thanks for the donation to Motor Neurone Disease.

Peter passionate about Mt Buller

THE Ski Club of Victoria’s recently publicised plans for an apartment development on Mt Buller has already received quite a number of excited Expressions of Interest.

Architect Peter McIntyre is delighted and believes that the project will go ahead and is looking forward to working with the prospective buyers, discussing and refining his plans to, wherever possible, accommodate their needs.

It was Peter who designed and supervised the rebuilding of the Whitt in the 1960s, so in a way, he is the perfect choice to undertake this current project.

Peter’s work on Mt Buller is extensive and started with the building of a series of lodges (built in twos), on the side of Shaky Knees for the McKay and Edgar, Alstergren and Holland families, as well as his own - Wombat in conjunction with Cuckoo for the Segan family.

“It took three years to build Wombat, which still exists,

and the main feature is a huge three-storey, interior stone dividing wall,” he said.

“The kids would grumble because I used to make them pick up stones from the side of the road to be added to the wall, but it’s still standing.”

in Australia, for his massive undertaking, the design and building of a complete alpine village at Dinner Plain, next to Mt Hotham resort.

His work in Melbourne is legendary, including the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Swimming Pool, South Yarra Jam Factory complex, and even Parliament Station.

Peter’s passion is still Mt Buller.

He still skis “when you can see” and he proudly recounts that his most important achievement relating to his skiing days is the fact that as SCV president, he re-launched club racing by introducing the highly successful notion of handicap races to make racing appealing to everyone.

Aged in his mid 80s, this man is inspirational.

Peter has the history, passion and the drive to lead this new round of building developments on Mt Buller, his enthusiasm is infectious and his delight at taking on this challenge will continue the legacy of distinctive Australian alpine architecture for posterity.

Fair Work Ombudsman protects snowfield workers THE Fair Work Ombudsman will be sending a team of 10 inspectors back to the snowfields of Victoria and NSW to check that seasonal workers are receiving correct wages.

The move follows a finding last year that there had been substantial underpayment of staff.

The agency required 39 businesses to repay more than $354,000 to more than 410 employees found to have been short changed last year.

The largest repayment was $34,242 for 30 employees at a single business.

While employers cooperated and repaid all outstanding entitlements, the agency is hoping that last year’s misunderstanding of the law has not been repeated.

“The main reason for the underpayments was a

widespread misunderstanding of award coverage,” explained Fair Work Ombudsman Natalie James.

“Most employees were applying the provisions of the Alpine Resorts Award, when in fact they should have been applying the General Retail Industry Award, the Fast Food Industry Award, the Hospitality Industry (general) Award or the Restraurant Industry Award,” Ms James explained.

The Alpine Resorts Award 2010 only applies to employers whose business activity involved the operation of ski lifts.

This year, the inspectors will re-visit resorts and add new ones to their list.

Their aim is to ensure that employers are paying staff correctly, maintaining appropriate records and providing staff with pay slips.

Anton is home when he is on Mt Buller YOU may have heard of Anton Grimus.

Well, if you’ve been to Mt Buller, it would be unusual if you hadn’t.

He is famous for many things, not the least of which is his skiing accomplishments.

Anton is known for his laid back attitude, now his ski thru coffee shop and his facial hair.

But behind the skiing legend is a young man like any other, trying to balance his work and sport requirements, his university studies and still fit in time to hang out with his family and friends.

It’s a juggling act that most can’t manage with decades of experience, let alone just years out of high school.

But it’s something this remarkable young athlete is managing with aplomb.

Raised in the Mansfield district from day one, Anton could ski before he could walk - thanks to his snow loving family.

Down the mountain, Anton and his brother attended the tiny Merrijig Primary School where the formation of the man that would become the Olympic hero began.

“There weren’t many kids at Merrijig, and it was awesome – just amazing,” Anton said.

“There is such a great feel there, it’s like a family.”

Fast forward 10 years and Anton Grimus has become a household name.

He finished the season ranked 12th due to bronze at the Nakiska World Cup in December 2012, a seventh at the 2013 World Championships and eighth at the Sochi Test

Event/World Cup. During the 2013/14 season Anton showed he has the speed to deliver top results by winning the qualification run at the Val Thorens World Cup in January.

He then went on to compete at the Sochi Winter Olympics.

But it is not just his on-snow performance that he works hard at.

“I’m studying at Melbourne University doing a post grad in Engineering – they are pretty good with my lack of attendance at times,” he said.

With plans to keep skiing competitively for at least an-

other four years, but hoping for 10, Anton said eventually he would like to enter the family business.

“Mt Buller is my home,” he said.

“I love it here, and of course I’d love to keep skiing, but I can see myself working the business too with dad.”

When asked what was the single most appealing thing to be a professional ski cross racer, Anton said it was the family within the sport.

“There is such a sense of community for Australian athletes,” he said.

“No matter where you are,

you feel like you’re part of something, because in Australia the number of snow sports competitors is relatively small.

“No matter where you compete, you know someone from home.”

From here, as the spring weather draws an end to the snow season, Anton will head to Austria for training before entering the World Cup Series which starts in December.

“You never know what’s just around the corner, and I hope to ski for a long time to come,” he said.

“But whatever happens, I wouldn’t change a thing.”

THE snow is almost finished, and already Mt Stirling is getting ready to launch into summer in a big way.

Mountain biking has been growing steadily over the last few summers and if Mt Stirling has its way, this will be the ‘summer of the bike’.

A new business, The Epicentre, is opening at Telephone Box Junction (TBJ) this November.

The Epicentre is the brainchild of Yully and Ez, a dynamic and enterprising young couple known to many on Mt Stirling and Mt Buller.

Yully has ‘café hopped’ through Mt Buller resort and is passionate about using local and organic produce to produce the ultimate ‘big breakfasts’ and gourmet picnics and dinners.

Ez worked at the Mirimbah Store for two years and her bubbly, friendly personality

has made her many friends with locals and summer visitors.

Together they have created The Epicentre to provide great coffee, local wines and beers, delicious meals as well as picnics and even personalised, prepared gourmet camp meals which can be delivered to campsites.

Life saving defibrillators placed around the resort THANKS to a united community effort, Mt Buller has welcomed the arrival of 10 new defibrillators.

The life saving pieces of equipment are available for public access on the mountain and have been placed in strategic spots around the hill.

A number of groups including BSL (4), RMB (2) and a number of commercial stakeholders (5) - defibrillators significantly increase the chances of survival in the event of an emergency.

They will be placed at the Arlberg Hotel, Koffler’s Restaurant, Pension Grimus, Ski Club of Victoria, placed by the RMB at the village plaza and Alpine Central and BSL have placed one each at Cattleman’s Restaurant, Spurs Restaurant, Tirol Café, BSL control centre and for the winter at the top of Wombat Lift.

Also one will be carried by the ski patrollers – making 12 in total.

Grollo Leisure donated two to the ski patrol as part of their extension to the Mansfield and District Ambulance Auxiliary project to distribute defibrillators around the region.

Once they are in place they will be registered with 000 who can then direct callers with an emergency

to the nearest machine.

In the event of an emergency the first thing to do is call ‘000’ immediately.

“Every minute lost reduces the chances of survival by 10 per cent so defibrillators are a vital piece of equipment that save lives,” said Ambulance Victoria Mt Buller team manager Brett Cooper.

“Ambulance Victoria has a program for public access to defibrillators.”

Brett has been involved in

talking to people regarding these machines, but Ambulance Victoria has not purchased any of the machines.

However, across the district the Mansfield and District Ambulance Auxiliary currently has a public access defibrillator program where they are assisting community groups in purchasing machines.

Mt Buller was not a part of this program as it is deemed a commercial resort and not a community entity.

However, the mountain has been supported by the Auxiliary and Ambulance Victoria.

Ambulance Victoria has also played an active role in the organisation and registration through the 000 system.

Brett said once all the machines are in place he is hoping to create awareness of these locations and encourage mountain staff to familiarise themselves with these strategically placed machines.

He went on to run his own trucking business in NSW before returning to Victoria to work with his son Ashley.

Although Bill has been retired for some 13 years, his passion and interest in the trucking industry is still very much alive.

WILLIAM Cleeland was recently inducted into the 2014 Shell Rimula Wall of Fame in Alice Springs for his achievements and lifetime dedication to the Australian transport community.

Aussies top performers in Continental Cup LAST week saw Australia’s best alpine skiers hit the slopes at Hotham Alpine Resort in Victoria for the Australia New Zealand Cup ( A N C ) eve n t s ove r f o u r days.

More than 70 athletes representing 10 countries took part with USA, Canada, NZ and many countries throughout Europe in the field for the two events, Giant Slalom

(GS) and Slalom.

S t a r t i n g o ff w i t h t h e Men’s GS on Day 1, Australia’s Luc Chevalier from Thredbo finished third behind winner Adam Zampa from Slovakia and Hig Roberts from the USA in second.

Australia’s Winter Olympian Greta Small launched her campaign in gold, winning over Sabina Majerczyk from Poland.

Small backed this up at her home mountain, Hotham Alpine Resort, with a second win in the Slalom taking first place over Majerczyk again and team mate Jessica Haslau from Mt Buller in third.

I n t h e m e n ’s G S o n Day 2, Zampa was once again in front with Mattias Roenngren from Sweden in second and Australia’s Ross

Peraudo from Perisher placing third.

In the Women’s GS events it was a fierce competition with top places juggling from the day before.

Finishing off in first was New Zealand’s Piera Hudson followed by Aussie Greta Small in second.

She was joined by team mate Jessica Haslau from Mt Buller in third.

On to the Slalom event and strong Giant Slalom performer Majerczyk finished in first with Australia’s Haslau backing up her third place GS performance to take second in the overall Women’s Slalom.

Elise Chauvel from the USA was in third.

I n t h e M e n ’s S l a l o m , Zampa from Slovakia again took the crown of gold ahead

of US team mates Hig Roberts and Nolan Kasper.

The first Australian to place on day two was Ross Peraudo in 11th position.

The Australia New Zealand Continental Cup event now heads to Coronet Peak in New Zealand with overall discipline (GS, SL) winners securing their own world cup spot for the upcoming Northern Hemisphere season.

She is also a champion swimmer and has just been selected into the Australian Swimming Paralympic Development Team.

THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE SKIING AT MT BULLER: Happy, family, fun.

MANSFIELD Highway Patrol and Air Wing officers teamed up for Operation Early Bird for the second time this snow season which focused on speeding drivers heading to and from Mt Buller last weekend.

They detected 90 speeding drivers with 58 drivers travelling between 15-25kmh over the speed limit.

One of the drivers caught was a learner driver who was travelling at 122kmh while her father sat next to her.

Mansfield’s Highway Patrol Sergeant Marty McLachlan has appealed for people to drive safely on their way to and from the snow fields.

He said a 24-year-old Brighton East man running late to a dog show was clocked at 183kmh in a 100kmh zone on Saturday morning on Mount Buller Road at Merrijig.

On Sunday night, on the same stretch of road, a 30-year-old Merrijig man was caught 73kmh over

the speed limit.

Leading Senior Constable Paul Gillard also from Mansfield HWP said: “It’s a great time of year to head to Mount Buller, however, it’s important that members of the public drive to the conditions.

“While it is a tourist destination, it’s also a rural area with animals frequently on the road.

“For a lot of people, their natural instinct when confronted with an animal in their path is to swerve.

“This can be dangerous at the best of times, but when you’re doing 70 or 80 over the speed limit - we’re lucky these actions didn’t result in a fatality.”

Sheriff officers also participated in the operation and executed 110 warrants for a total of $35,000.

A further vehicle was wheel clamped pending the payment of $10,000 in outstanding fines.

Further operations are planned.

Local ski instructors place well in Hoppet

TOP GUYS: Mt Stirling’s three Estonia ski instructors all placed well in the recent Falls Creek Kangaroo Hoppet event - using it as a training exercise in readiness for the next Winter Olympics.

IT was great success for the Stirling Experience crew in the Kangaroo Hoppet at Falls Creek recently.

Head ski instructor and cross country ski coach Varhur Teppan finished second in the Thursday night sprints and fourth outright in the 42km Hoppet marathon.

Joosep Tammemae and Siim Eilo finished 20th and 27th respectively from an international field of more than 1000 competitors.

Being part of the World Loppet Cross Country Skiing race series, the Hoppet at Falls Creek is possibly the largest open snow sports community race in Australia attracting some of the finest athletes from across the world.

The Stirling Experience team, all Estonian cross country ski instructors,

working in the Mt Stirling Ski School this winter, were pleased with their result and immediately following the 42km marathon skied out to Mt McKay as a cool down exercise in what they say is the first of their training in their aim to reach the Estonian Soul 2016 Winter Olympic team.

Director of the Mt Stirling Ski School, Craig Jones, congratulated the boys for their outstanding effort and thanked them for their dedicated work on Mt Stirling throughout the season.

He also thanked the school students who took part in the Stirling Experience Cross Country race squad and were trained by these three great Estonian instructors and wished all the best for the interschools national competition to be held at Perisher.

By HANNAH KENNEDY Resort Services Coordinator Mt Buller AFTER much encouragement at meetings and presentations, Disabled Wintersport Australia (DWA) managed to finally catch up with Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management CEO John Huber in the late stages of the 2013 season.

The Resort Management Board (RMB) at Buller has been extremely supportive of DWA in our establishment of the In-Resort Program over the last few years, and it was a great opportunity to demonstrate to John some of the thrills (but not spills) experi-

enced by DWA members.

With Andrew Railton out with us to snap some action shots, and a friend there for moral support and encouragement - we set off for a few great runs.

John took to it like a natural, carving turns with the hand held riggers in a tethered ski, and got a great sense of how the equipment and using people’s abilities can translate into exhilaration in the alpine environment.

Catching up with John, he told us what he thought of the unique experience.

“It was fantastic heading out with the DWA team to get a taste of what is possible on the

slopes, regardless of ability,” John said.

“It was a challenge that I relished the opportunity to take part in, and was very impressed with the knowledge and skill that the DWA guides can offer our guests to give them a safe, supportive and memorable snow experience.

“We are thrilled to have DWA in resort throughout the season to offer support for people with disabilities so they can participate in snowsports here at Mt Buller.”

This 2014 season DWA have an office located in Alpine Central and a meeting place at Buller Ski School.

No doubt John will not

be the only one testing out the sit ski, as DWA begin to introduce more and more of the Mt Buller community to the world of adaptive skiing, from come-and-try opportunities to volunteer guide training throughout the ski season.

Disabled skiers impress Minister Drum MINISTER for Sport and Recreation Damian Drum was amazed and impressed by the talent and courage of disabled skiers such as Jess Gallagher when he visited Falls Creek recently.

Mr Drum learned that Jess Gallagher, who is visually impaired, reached speeds of over 100km to win bronze in the Slalom events at Sochi last year.

Mr Drum said, “Jess’ courage and faith in her guide puts the achievements of able bodied athletes into perspective.”

Mr Drum also visited Disability Wintersport Australia’s (DWA) facilities at Howmans Gap, just off the mountain from Falls Creek, and was shown plans for an accommodation block for 35 people.

President of DWA Jim Blackburn said “with these facilities and support from ski lift companies and the Resort Management Board we can offer disabled skiers opportunities to ski at the same cost as able bodied people”.

“That is, the extra cost of their carers and guides is covered.”

Bill Sykes (MLA, Benalla) said “I too was impressed

with the achievements of disabled skiers”.

“And as Jess pointed out, by being able to mix with able bodied skiers both on and off the slopes, disabled skiers feel very much a part of the snow scene.

“I look forward to the minister giving serious consideration to DWA’s request for financial support for the very worthy project.”

Mansfield boys dominate division three skier cross MANSFIELD Secondary College (MSC) skiers Warwick Crawford, Ned Angliss, and Daniel Walker put in dominant performances to top the pool at the Victorian Interschools.

Racing in the division three Skier Cross event, Crawford won the individual section, and led MSC to victory in the teams event.

Second place in the individual went to Ned Angliss, just half a second behind, while Daniel Walker came in sixth, 1.13 seconds behind.

MSC took the team event by 3.45 seconds from Scotch College, with the team

Paralympic medallist was guest at multi-class dinner

By LIZ WEBB SKI Club of Victoria hosted its annual multi-class dinner recently with guest speaker dual Paralympic medallist, Jess Gallagher.

Jess is a vision impaired Alpine skier and was Australia’s

first female Paralympic medallist at Vancouver in 2010.

More than 70 athletes, parents and friends attended the dinner and bib presentation.

The event allows school students with a range of abilities to participate in a two-day race

development camp run by DWA and funded by the Buller Knights.

The race was held the following morning on Burnt Hut Spur where 24 students and three Special Olympics athletes participated in an Alpine GS event with two runs.

Everyone had a great time

and some wonderful personal achievements were made.

Reminiscing past trips to Mt Buller

By PAM ZIERK-MAHONEY NOW here’s a bit of history that we don’t come across too often.

Colin Myers last week called into the office of Buller News (down in Mansfield) and offered to show us some old photographs and a poem which was sent to his father, Mac Myers, back in 1950.

The poem – reproduced here as well – was written especially for his father by his best mate T.Shaw Logan.

At the time of the ‘trip to Buller’ the Myers were living at ‘Waddamana’, a property at Eildon.

Mac Myers was originally from Footscray but was an accomplished skier and for many years skied various resorts, before gaining a contract to cart timber to Eildon to construct timber huts for the workers extending Lake Eildon and its wall.

Mac often skied the slopes of Buffalo and beyond but also skied Buller which was closer to home.

He did this with his other mates from Footscray – Norm McCubbin and Gordon Logan.

T.Shaw Logan was the son of Gordon and used to pick up old Jeeps at auctions, fix them up and re-sell them – but many of the trips to Buller were in an old grey Jeep, many of which were also known for some years as the ‘taxi’ service up the mountain.

Colin also has other memorabilia of the early days of skiing expeditions including a set of handcrafted Blackwood skis.

He also remembers skiing with his father – especially when the family would visit Mt Buffalo – where they regularly met up with like-minded friends.

But Mt Buller became a favorite place to take part in many a skiing adventure – to which Colin still visits sometimes – just to keep his skills up.

The skis we soon had off the rack, Then started up the run, Of course we had to follow Mac But joined in ‘all the fun’.

We each had breakfast early, For we’d many miles to go, We love the hurley-burley When we’re off to see the snow.

The Bull Run was so misty, The skiers looked like ghosts, As they did their clever “Christys” Near the idle ski town posts.

Through Yellingbo to Woori, We crossed the Yarra there, The storm then broke in fury, Passed the Sanctuary with care.

I started up the snow-pole line, On my way to reach the top, The Summit Hut is rather fine, But someday it will flop.

To Healesville didn’t take as long, We started up the Spur, Past the ‘Hermitage’ and Narbethong, To the V8s powerful purr.

The line of fifty snow-poles Is a solid hour’s work, But it’s like a player kicking goals, Its work we never shirk.

Through Taggerty and Buxton town, Found Thornton folk asleep, Two signs “To Eildon” made us frown, Each side of Goulburn deep.

The canteen fed the boys and girls For I was hours away, But once the mist passed off in whirls To show the grand array.

Ran through the town to see the Weir Then back to look for Mac, We found him full of happy cheer, Tea and toast - delightful snack.

We saw a lot of skiing friends From Buffalo and the Alps, We met them round the mountain bends Wearing many brilliant scalps.

He loaded up an extra pair, Of skis for me to use, He started up the Jeep with care Then off to see the views.

Six up, the Jeep was loaded then To bring us down the hill, And we were on our way again, With many miles to fill.

For 20 miles we ran along The charming Eildon Weir, With Mac it didn’t take him long Because he has no fear.

The Master, Mac was at the wheel, We simply floated down, ‘Twas nicer than the happy crew On Kosciusko’s crown.

“Jones” Wallaby was on the track, Waiting for the mail Of course we had to send him back, With bells upon his tail.

We soon got back to Eildon, Another quick repast, Then all aboard for Yellingbo, The day was nearly past.

We crossed the Big, the Delatite We admired the splendid stock, At Merrijig we turned to right, And saw a Comeback flock.

Our host, old Mac, was at his best, The day was full of charm, In every detail stood the test, He kept us free from harm.

We pushed along to Merrimbar Where the huts are built in rows, Where the Forestry Commission are, And the Delatite still flows.

We were back at Sonnys-glen at eight, To each, another tea, 250 miles, a decent date, At least for you and me.

We continued up the Mountains To where the cutting ends, The Jeep all obstacles disdains Round rock and hairpin bends.

End of season maintenance Post-season and pre-season preparation SPRING is well and truly upon us.

We’re all going to have heaps of fun in the sun until the lifts finally close for the season.

Just as Buller Ski Lifts go into maintenance mode for the off-season, we need to do the same with our ski and boarding gear.

The first thing I do at the end of our winter season is to pull my liners and footbeds out of my boot shells so they can dry out properly.

Once dry and put back together, the buckles are done up and stored in my boot bag in a cool, dry place.

A damp laundry, the garden shed or hot attic space is not a good storage solution as I’ve seen a few customers with liners that have been eaten by rodents or have gone mouldy.

Next I get my skis ready for my next trip to the snow.

I have them repaired, tuned and waxed ready for either our next winter or for my next OS trip.

The wax is not scraped off as this protects the ski base from oxidisation and rust on the edges while they are stored in a cool place.

A quick scrape and brush is all they will need before I next hit the slopes.

Having this process done at the end of the season not only protects your skis but is

more cost efficient than just waxing and leaving the tuning to the beginning of next season.

At Bumps we repair, tune and wax all our rental skis and boards in October so they are stored and ready to go for next winter.

Our Wintersteiger workshop operates all year round.

My ski gear also gets the royal treatment.

Make sure to check the care labels on your gear.

I spot clean the grease spots with a damp cloth and small amount of eucalyptus oil first.

Don’t forget to remove any fur trims and close all Velcro tabs, then into the washing machine using Nikwax Techwash.

This stuff does a great cleaning job and also revitalises the breathability.

Another cycle through the machine using Nikwax TX.Direct Wash-In re-proofs the water repellency.

To dry your gear turn them inside out to line dry in the breeze, this will speed up the drying time.

HAPPY DUO: Mt Buller welcomed celebrity chef Tobie Puttock a member of celebrity chef Jamie Oliver’s YouTube channel ‘FoodTube’. Tobie Puttock hosted a dinner at Black Cockatoo restaurant (Mt Buller Chalet) on August 21, with his good friend and wine connoisseur Matt Skinner.

GREAT FUN: Skyline Park this season has provided skiers with some fabulous jumps and experiences such as this skier showed to his delighted audience.

WATCH ME: Joey Corcoran says watch me as he performs his trick off the Skull couch at Skyline Park.

VILLAGE ENTERTAIN: Free entertainment is provided most Saturday afternoons in the village square. Last Saturday it was Soul Safari who entertained.

REAL estate agents across Victoria are bound by a code of ethics requiring them to act fairly and honestly in their dealings with property buyers.
