MT BULLER continues to experience growth in visitation year-on-year, and to date this season the resort has welcomed over 140,000 visitors, which is 39 per cent above the previous 10-year average. Mt Buller Mt Stirling ARMB chief executive officer John Huber said last week “we are continually welcoming new markets of visitors who are looking for that first time visit to the

snow as a day trip”. “These new markets, combined with our regular strong day visitor market, has meant we have experienced several days of record visitation this season, with huge volumes of guests enjoying the great snow conditions,” Mr Huber said. “It has meant that on several weekends the resort has reached capacity for day visitors, and those visitors arriving later in the day have been required to park their vehicles much lower down the mountain and even at

Convenient Location

Mirimbah Park.” Experiencing such high levels of day visitation has meant that additional transport has been required to ensure visitors can be transported safely to and from the Village, and additional staff have also been put on to assist customers around the resort. “We are also seeing an increase in visitors arriving to the mountain later in the day, and our message is for guests to arrive early to really get the most out of their snow experience,” Mr Huber said.

Competitive Rates

“It makes for a wonderful day out to arrive earlier in the day and enjoy all that Mt Buller has to offer, from learning to ski or board, taking a sled dog or snowshoe tour to eating at one of our many on-mountain food outlets and creating great new memories. “We look forward to welcoming many more visitors to the resort as we head into what is set to be a fantastic August. “With plenty of snow on the forecast the lineup of spectacular events

includes the Mt Buller Slopestyle competition, Chillfactor Freebom, Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships, Junior National Mogul Championships and many more.” Over the past three weeks - and particularly at weekends - visitor numbers have been very high. The ARCC visitor number reports for week seven for Mt Buller shows some 29,024 arrived on the mountain and 463 at Mt Stirling. Continued page 2

DOES Mt Stirling have the most popular tree in Victoria? Voting through the National Trust was held over the month of July and the winner was announced on Sunday coinciding with National Tree Day. The National Trust of Australia launched the inaugural Victorian Tree of the Year contest in June.

Nine Victorian trees were shortlisted and were put to a public vote. The trees were drawn from the National Trust’s Australian Register of Significant Trees, which has 20,000 trees in 1200 locations across the state. Mt Stirling has an iconic snow gum, which was chosen as one of the finalists in the competition. The tree is in excess of 500 years old and is the only tree on the Mt Stirling Summit. Tree believers were encouraged to vote for the Mt Stirling snow gum in the National Trust’s ‘Victorian Tree of the Year’.

The year to date figures also show a rise in numbers with Stirling figures up by some 137 per cent and Buller up by 31 per cent. However, statistics also show that the majority of these visitors are day visitors with not as many staying overnight or longer. Visitor days for Buller have reached 37,928 and Stirling 694 - on average for Buller up by only 22 per cent and Stirling up a massive 148 per cent. Across all resorts for Victorian ski fields numbers have had a slight decrease on previous years - down 17 per cent and only 67,171 visitors for week seven and visitor day numbers 102,774 a decrease of 9 per cent on previous years. However, numbers are expected to jump again with Interschools heading our way - and of course more snow recorded over the past week.

Mt Buller honours contribution of Volunteer Ski Patrol

WITH a decent fall of fresh snow outside the mood was lively at a special gathering of the Mt Buller Ski Patrol and special guests at Spurs restaurant on the northern slopes of the resort on Saturday, July 23. The night was an opportunity to honour the rich history of the Ski Patrol and celebrate the important role of the volunteer portion of this respected organisation. “Tonight we recognise 20 seasons of successful partnership with the Ski Patrol serving skiers at Mt Buller under the auspices of Buller Ski Lifts,” said Laurie Blampied, general manager of BSL. “The ski patrol is an invaluable part of the mountain community and I don’t think there is a more highly respected team of volunteers than the Mt Buller Volunteer Ski Patrol who are a vital part of our patrolling team,” Laurie said. Laurie spoke about the history and evolution of the Ski Patrol acknowledging their role has always been one of safety and service and presented Mt Buller Volunteer Ski Patrol captain Cam Oxley with a framed plaque recognising 20 years of cooperation between the ski patrol and Buller Ski Lifts. Sam McDougall is the Ski Patrol manager and spoke on the night. “I am so proud to be part of a team that has such a rich history and passion for helping guests when they visit our mountain,” Sam said. “Our volunteer patrollers contribute over 800 hours of service each season and they are integral in the training and development of the Ski Patrol team, which is a huge task. “Many deep friendships have been forged within the group over the years and this

extends throughout the summer months. “We have very little turnover of staff among our group of 19 paid patrollers and 30 volunteers, which says a lot about the healthy culture among all our members. “We look forward to the next 20 years.” The Mt Buller Ski Patrol is the oldest continuously operating ski patrol in Australia, having been started in 1950 by Maurice Selle, a ski instructor and manager of the Ski Club of Victoria Ivor Whittaker Memorial Lodge. This was an SCV Ski Patrol operating from the first aid room at the “Whitt”. Initially under the auspices of the Red Cross the ski patrol

them some ski jackets if they provided the material. Illegal bushwalking and skiing expeditions (she was an enemy alien and meant to stay in Melbourne) during WWII followed, and news of her designs slowly spread through Victoria’s ski community. As skiing increased in popularity following WWII Rosalie’s business grew, reaching its peak during the 1960s. As one of the first Australian ski wear manufacturers to bring fashion to ski design her outfits featured in the pages of Australian Vogue, Flair and the Women’s Weekly, she received numerous awards and accolades and her designs toured America to promote Australian fashion. Rosalie continued to design and manufacture fashionable but functional ski wear until the late 1970s, although increasing imports from large overseas manufacturers and constant new innovations in fabric technology made it difficult for her to compete in a relatively small industry. This jacket was worn by both Rosa’s son and daughterin-law, who are members of Omega Ski Lodge, until the 1990s showing that good design never goes out of style. You can find the museum opening hours in What’s On and can see this and some of our other items not currently on display online at Victorian Collections: https:// victoriancollections.net.au/ organisations/national-alpinemuseum-of-australia-inc.

Gems in the museum store room

FOR many reasons museums can never display all their objects at once. Here at Mt Buller’s NAMA, I share some of my favourite objects currently resting in the museum’s store room. Looking good has always been a part of going skiing whether it’s keeping up with the latest ski fashions, fitting in with a particular crowd or your style and technique when out on the hill. One of my favourite items of ski fashion in the museum’s collection is a reversible ski jacket made by Rosalie ‘Rosa’ Kiessling in the 1970s. Black on one side and black, yellow and red checked on the other it’s very simple and understated compared to some of Rosa’s other designs; such as the jacket and matching cap appliqued with Australian wildflowers also in NAMA’s collection. For me, however, it illustrates Rosa’s emphasis on practical glamour and the way in which she combined high fashion with functional ski wear design. German by birth Rosalie grew up skiing and ice skating, she studied fashion design in Munich and worked designing women’s ski wear and lingerie before migrating to Australia in 1939. Her first foray into ski wear in Australia was during WWII when two RAAF pilots approached her to make

later came under the organisation of the Victorian Ski Association (VSA) as the Ski Rescue Service. The ski patrol was all volunteer until the late 1960s when the VSA started to employ someone to patrol the ever busier mid-week periods and in the early 1970s, the then land manager the Forests Commission started a paid ski patrol. When former Buller chief executive officer Sandie Jeffcoat arrived at Mt Buller in 1982 the resort was still run by the Forests Commission who employed the paid ski patrollers and the volunteers were still part of the VSA Ski Rescue Service. In 1986 when Mt Buller, as with all Victorian ski resorts at

the time, came under the management of the Alpine Resorts Commission, Sandie took the controversial step of combining what were two ski patrols into one with one distinctive blue jacket bearing a yellow Maltese cross. A decade later the ski patrol transitioned from the Alpine Resorts Commission/Resort Management Board to be part of Buller Ski Lifts in the 1997 season which is also when the current Ski Patrol manager Sam McDougall joined the ranks. Ski Patrol now are fully integrated in the wider mountain operations team at Mt Buller and work seamlessly with lift and mountain operations all over the resort.

Gold for Stephen’s puddings By PAM ZIERK-MAHONEY STEPHEN and Michele Morrice have done it again. Stephen’s Fine Foods submitted four entries in to the Australian Fine Food Awards for 2016 and to date have been awarded three gold medals. Top prizes were taken out for the 1kg roll (puddings), 1kg traditional pudding and 1kg gluten free pudding. The fourth entry was a sauce which at the time of going to press had not been judged. Michele said last week she was thrilled with such great success again. And do the Morrices have time to celebrate? Not yet, they are flat out busy at their Ajax Winter Lodge on Buller – too busy to take time at this stage – but later on they will definitely be celebrating. And with their business on the market Michele commented it will be big shoes for anyone to follow in their footsteps and keep on taking awards. Well done Stephen and Michele.

Little Shredders can get Golden Ticket

WITH winter now in full swing and such a fantastic start to the snow season, there has never been a better time to learn to ski and snowboard in Australia. Little Shredders is the brand new initiative from Ski and Snowboard Australia which is providing children all over Australia the opportunity to learn basic snow sports skills within the school grounds. The unique program allows children of all ages to learn about balance, snow safety, spatial awareness, teamwork and communication; all while they are in the school yard or gym. In addition to the Little Shredders program, Australian alpine resorts have been instrumental in establishing a world’s first transition opportunity for all children who complete this unique program – the Golden Ticket. The Golden Ticket initiative provides every child that completes a Little Shredders program with a complimentary on-snow experience at an Australian resort of their choice. The free Golden Ticket offer is valued at up to $300 and includes a two-day lift pass, a two-day ski or snowboard equipment hire pack and lessons from a qualified instructor. Mount Buller, Thredbo, Mount Hotham, Falls Creek, Perisher, Selwyn Snow Resort and Charlotte Pass are all part of the Golden Ticket initiative that provides an opportunity for children to transition from the Little Shredders program to an on-snow resort based activity. SECRET LOCATION: TBR members trek through their own ‘back country’ during training.

Team Buller Riders taking it to the back country INTEREST in back country skiing is currently booming, evident through successful films such as Sugar Mountain and increased exposure in print, social and online media. Team Buller Riders (TBR) identified the two-week school holiday training block as the perfect opportunity to be proactive and give the athletes some exposure and insight into the back country experience. Enter Teddy Laycock. As a former TBR athlete, Teddy was an ideal candidate through both his passion and vast array of experiences including ski patrolling in New Zealand, full APSI instructor certification and most relevant of all, real life experiences in epic back country locations such as Iceland, Japan, South

America and Australia. Teddy sure does know his stuff, which is no doubt why back country brands such as Macpac are on board as a sponsor. To quote TBR coach Joe Corcoran, the “Teddy experience” as it became known, is all about teaching the kids about being safe and respecting the glory of snowcapped mountains. Each day Teddy took TBR groups touring out to some secret locations away from the crowds to simulate back country terrain. Once arrived at the new location, the first step was setting up the base, with the contents of Teddy’s backpack revealed. It’s amazing how much can fit in one backpack, with items

packed including a sleeping bag, transceiver, probe, shovel, water bottle, cooker and propane can. The location to set up the tent was identified, with Teddy explaining what to look for in terms of working with the terrain available, best pitch to set up on and shelter from the winds. Once the tent was erected, the group then used some of the cooking facilitates and made themselves a hot chocolate. Once the base was established, it was time to learn about avalanche conditions, digging a pit to look at different levels in the snow pack and the dangers involved. The group then took part in avalanche transceiver search-

ing, with the transceiver, probe and shovel all operating as a package to rescue anyone buried in an avalanche slide. Once the groups where educated on how the transceivers work, they were buried in a hidden location with the TBR athletes then going through the motions to track down the signal, how to probe, shovel and dig out the transceiver. The feedback from TBR athletes and parents was very positive, with the families appreciating the quality of the sessions operated by Teddy, with his knowledge, passion and enthusiasm for the back country infectious. No doubt the TBR athletes were all left inspired for their own back country sessions in the future.

Estonians win the adventure race again finishing 12 minutes ahead of second placed Dan and Dave from CSIR Ski Club. It is now the third year in a row that the team from the Mt Stirling Experience have taken the first place honours in this event. Kaupo and Siim collected $200 cash and a fresh case of Red Bull each for taking the win. Kaupo’s brother also won this same race in 2014. Prior to the event Kaupo had only been to Mt Buller once and in a White Out. Siim and Kaupo were delighted with their win and will take home the medals (a great souvenir of their time here in Australia). Fastest individual was Tom Kennan in a time of 47 minutes, winning $100. CSIR Ski Club were again victorious in taking out the Lodge Championships with club representatives Dan and Dave being the first lodge team home in a time of 40 minutes.

THE annual Mt Buller Adventure Race has been run and won – and for the third year in a row Estonians have taken the prize. This year the race course was run with a difference due to lack of snow in the days preceding the race. Due to the restrictions this year the race was set up within the Mt Buller Village environs, with nine checkpoints in total to collect. Competitors competed on foot, with some creative use of the BB1 Chairlift, the free village and day park shuttle buses and taxis being used to navigate around the village. Starting from the Village Square racers then traversed down to Celia’s then climbed again to the Arlberg before descending to the Clock Tower. With sun shining Siim Eilo and Kaupo Tammenae, the temporary Estonian ski instructors from Mt Stirling ran the course in 28 minutes

DELIVERING TO BULLER

NOW that the winter season is in full swing on Mt Buller the risk of chimney and flue fires increases. However, nothing beats a cold winter’s night snuggled up in front of a wood fire. But if that wood fire isn’t being properly maintained it could change from being an indulgence to a life threatening danger, warns the CFA. District 23 CFA operations manager Stewart Kreltszheim said all too often CFA members attend house fires which are caused by chimney fires or burning logs rolling out of the fire and starting a fire on carpets. Either source can often result in severe damage to, or loss of the house. Chimney and flue fires are the most common callouts for Mt Buller CFA members during winter. Mr Kreltszheim said chimney fires are caused by the accumulation of creosote and other products of incomplete combustion in the chimney. Over a period of months these products build up in the chimney as a coating and when subjected to strong heat from the fire they ignite in the chimney with a real potential to start a fire in the roof. Fires burning in the roof space above smoke alarms, or in wall cavities, can go undetected until they are sub-

Mr Kreltszheim offered some simple ways to minimise the risk of chimney fires: before using the fire, clean the chimney and inspect the fire place or fire box; ensure there are no flammable materials stored near the fireplace; do an additional cleaning in mid-winter to be extra sure; and check the roof space to make sure that there is

nothing flammable close to the chimney. Mr Kreltszheim said chimney fires aren’t limited to houses. They can occur in commercial premises including hotels and guest houses. Indeed any premises with wood fires have the potential for chimney fires. Important questions to ask yourself each day: When you go to bed tonight are you sure that

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Looking forward to switch being turned on HOW wonderful that Mt Stirling has received a grant to improve visitor facilities. Visitor numbers to Mt Stirling have always been reliably good in both summer and winter; adding to the tourism dollars spent in Mansfield. However, it is very disappointing that the hard work and ingenuity of past environmental and electrical engineering achievements on Mt Stirling have not been acknowledged in the resort press releases concerning “Australia’s first Alpine Hub powered by renewable energy”. Let’s get the facts straight please. In 1998 Stirling Experience contracted electrical engineer Michael McQueen to install a hydroelectricity plant utilising the fall of water over the 60

metre cascade waterfall on Falls Creek below Telephone Box Junction. The project was fully authorised as a pilot project by the then Mt Buller Resort chief executive officer Sandie Jeffcoat and was totally funded and constructed by Stirling Experience and was, and forever will be, “Australia’s first Alpine Hub powered by renewable energy”. This system powered the bistro, ski hire and RMB office, dumping excess energy into building heaters at night and supplying all power requirements during the day. The hydro system powered Mt Stirling 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, for seven years until it was unfortunately destroyed by the 2006 Alpine fires.

Stirling Experience recognised the value of having this scheme in the natural landscape of Mt Stirling but was thwarted in their attempts to re-install the hydro generator following the fires by the bureaucratic regulations and costs imposed, forcing a return to the diesel generator. After the past few years of talking about green mountains it is very pleasing to see that something will be done about a return to renewable energy power generation following the success of the original privately funded pilot scheme; and facts aside, Stirling Experience welcomes the mountain’s initiative and looks forward to the hydro light switch being turned back on again. Jacqui drops in for some fresh skiing WORLD champion and Winter Olympian Jacki Cooper is spending this week on Mt Buller (August 1-7). Jacqui now does motivational speaking and is an in-demand professional presenter, and of course the aerials jump site at Mt Buller is named in her honour. Jacqui has represented Australia in the sport of aerial skiing for 20 years. Her career started in 1989 at Mt Buller when she was recruited by Geoff Lipshut (CEO of the OWIA) to join the Techne Team. Within three years she was already representing her country at the World Championships in Lake Placid New York; by 1994 she competed at the Lillehammer Winter Olympics.

SSDF donates $25,000 to assist MSA students in snowsports THE School Snow Sport Development Foundation (SSDF) chairman, Debbie Bennett, was thrilled to be able to gift funds to the Multiclass Sports Association (MSA) recently. Parents and staff from several schools across Melbourne have formed MSA to assist school aged children with disability to participate in snowsports. For the last few years a multiclass event has been held as a part of the Victorian Interschool Snowsport Championships and these funds will be put to good use in assisting students to continue to compete. Caitlin and Flynn from Ashwood School, along with their principal Helen Hatherly, were very appreciative of the generous donation to their association.

Ms Hatherly is also chairman of MSA. “The benefits our students get from their participation in snowsports include increased self-confidence, greater resilience, physical fitness and social interaction with other skiers and snowboarders,” Ms Hatherly said. “We also enjoy the great sense of community that develops with the families who are involved. “We have 22 students competing in alpine and snowboard events and we are very much looking forward to this year’s championships.” The SSDF has announced that it will be ceasing its activities following the takeover of the interschools event by Ski and Snowboard Australia.

In 1999, just 10 years after starting her sport she became a world champion; the next 10 years would see her dominate and revolutionise her sport. In a very long and decorated career she has competed in 139 World Cup events, nine World Championships and been selected to five Winter Olympic teams. When Jacqui competed in Vancouver in February 2010 she became the first Australian woman in history (summer or winter Olympics) to represent Australia at five Games. Her record five world titles, 39 World Cup medals, 24 World Cup wins and three major World Championship medals has left Jacqui as the greatest aerial skier of all time (man or woman); an achievement that will go unbeaten for decades. During her visit to Buller this week she will join the K2 Women’s Day, do a guest snow report for the resort and may chat to the kids at the Buller primary school and secondary annexe.

AFTER a packed Buller X contenders announcement night, the focus is now the wait for when the event will take place. It’s been a weird rollercoaster winter so far. Snow blanketing the resort one day, gone the next week, and then back again. We’ve been out in the chutes several times. Although there is a decent base developing in there we still need a lot more snow. We will require at least 2-3 more solid falls to give the base depth needed to hold the event in the conditions it demands. Although it will be an extreme event, and most people

with ROB AIVATOGLOU

Kofler Hutte is a Buller institution EVERYBODY that has skied at Mt Buller has had a coffee, donut or spag bol at Kofler Hutte. It is a Mt Buller institution. It was built in 1959 by the Victorian Forestry Commission. Skiers complained that the government of the day did nothing for them, so Kofler Hutte was the answer. It was essentially a shelter with no running water, no electricity, no telephone and no sewerage. The shelter was named after Helmut Kofler, an Austrian pioneer of Mt Buller in the 30s. He came as a ski instructor and built the first chalet at Chalet Corner. He was tragically killed in a milling accident at the Delatite Sawmills, aged 37, in September 1940. Bob Flemming came to Mt Buller in 1969 from Westport in NZ. He had been travelling around and was offered his first job with Hans Grimus working on the lifts. His role revolved around the Howqua Poma - a dual poma that ran from Helicopter Flat on Bourke St all the way to the top of Wombat, then back down to the bottom of Howqua. It was the only access lift to the summit area for many decades, and the only access lift to return from the summit area back to the village. The poma would carry enormous traffic both ways. And it was well known

for the ‘launch pad take off’ from Howqua which would see many a beginner flat on their face within moments of commencing their ride. A condition of Bob’s employment was that he stayed at Kofler Hutte. Obviously Bob enjoyed the isolation and uniqueness of Koflers and in 1970 he got the job to run it. In 1971 he took out his own lease on the venue - Christine first came to Koflers in 1975 with Ben and Toby soon following and bought it out in 1984. Part of the deal was for Bob to connect the water, power and sewerage. Working closely with the lift company, these issues were dealt with during the mid 80s. Working part time at the Abom had ignited Bob’s love of food. Alastair Smith and George Vasalopoulos gave him his opening. Some 12-13 staff now call Koflers home during the season. One of the biggest challenges over the years has been ensuring all staff return to home base after a night out. After a few drinks, the 2km hike in fog and darkness could be quite tricky. In the early days the instructions were simple ‘follow the Howqua Poma line and do not deviate’. A generational change is under way, and Bob’s expectation is that son, Toby, will make the running in years to come.

PRACTICE RUN: Buller X contender Watkin McLennan taking in an aerial view of the event terrain, launching in off the summit of the mountain.

will never enter the Mt Buller chutes in their lifetime, what is exciting about the location is spectators can enjoy a clear view from the easily accessible Family Run. The event team is watching the forecast closely and suggest if the snowfalls continue as

forecast there is a good chance the event might go ahead in late August/early September. Buller X requires one of two scenarios to go ahead. One is immediately after a big storm when the snow is ‘winter-like’, the other is spring snow.

For the past six years since we’ve been planning the event concept, we know when the Bureau of Meteorology call for a 10 degree spring day we know at 2.30pm-4.30pm the chutes usually turn into perfect ‘corn’ snow and is really rippable and heaps of fun. Waiting for the planets to align is all part of the excitement and the skiers are on tenterhooks checking the weather maps and wondering when everything will come together to make it possible for ‘the mountain to call the day’. At the moment the odds are looking like September but we’ll keep reporting conditions weekly as the snow lands and share news and updates on the Buller X Facebook page and website www.bullerx.com.au. CHOOSING IT RIGHT: Supporters of Buller X - the event - tried the tastes of beers at Social Bandit recently to decide on which flavour should represent and carry the name ‘Buller X’ in association with this year’s inaugural event on Mt Buller. New local beer supports Buller X event MT BULLER is hosting a new extreme event called Buller X this winter, and there is also a new local beer with the same name. Tony Harrington wanted a beer partner for Buller X and quickly decided it made sense to join forces with award winning local brewer, Jeff Whyte of Social Bandit Mansfield, to create something that was unique to the event and the local area. “We’d reached out to potential sponsors for the Buller X event and were disappointed none of the big players wanted to contribute or support the athletes, but the moment we mentioned our idea to local businesses they couldn’t be more supportive and excited to get involved,” said Harrington.

“It only took a few minutes chatting with Jeff Whyte and his wife Jeanette and we’d come up with the idea to make our own distinct brew and name it Buller X. “We loved the idea of having a truly local beer that was made right here and would be enjoyed by locals and guests alike as part of their experience of being at Mt Buller.” Creating the beer was also a community effort, and a lot of fun. Harrington invited a group of Mt Buller locals for a tasting night at the Social Bandit and between rounds of delicious pizza and many samples of Jeff’s various styles of beers, including various lagers and ales, the group voted on their preferred style that would be Buller X.

“We wanted something with good flavour and distinctive from mainstream beers and Jeff gave us a quick lesson in beer production, hops and all things craft brewing that night,” said Harrington. Harrington had a distinctive black and white Buller X label created by Tim Woolley and Jeff Whyte got busy brewing the first batch in June. As soon as the first batch was ready for delivery local outlets were lining up to support the new brew and it sold out within just a couple of weeks. The second is already on the way and will be bottled at Social Bandit in early August ready to replenish supplies. Following the strong demand for Buller X Steam Lager, Whyte and Harrington

are already working on expanding the offering with a Buller X Pale Ale coming out in a few weeks. “We are so lucky to have skilled craftsmen like Jeff in our area making products like Buller X using clean water, natural hops, malt and yeast and creating something we can all enjoy,” said Harrington. “I love that this beer is made just minutes down the road and supports our local economy. “I think that is why people want to support it - plus it’s just a great beer with no preservatives so you don’t get a hangover.” A portion of all monies earned through sales of Buller X goes into the prize pool for the Buller X athletes competing.

Plenty happening at Stirling’s winter adventure playground WITH a blanket of fresh snow recently, Mt Stirling has come into its own as a winter adventure playground. Visitor numbers on Mt Stirling this season so far have climbed by a massive 138 per cent. Whether it’s hitting the slopes and searching for those untouched tracks, trying your hand at telemarking for the first time, or giving it a go on the toboggan run, there is plenty to do on the slopes. If you prefer something quieter, snuggle up and socialise around the pot belly stove in the Alpine Camp tepee or relax by a warm open fire with a delicious hot chocolate. Step it up a gear with something different and have a go on a Fat Bike. The Fat Bikes are back every weekend during winter. You can ride Fat Bikes on Circuit Road from Telephone Box Junction (TBJ) to King

IT’S OFFICIAL: Hamish Blake and Andy Lee with Marissa Goodsell and husband at the official opening of ‘Windless Marissa’ run below the Fox Chairlift.

THE South Australian Snow Sports Championships were for the first time held under the Buller Interschools Association Management, the same organisation responsible for organising the Victorian and Australian Interschools program. The champion boys and girls primary school was Pembroke school. The champion secondary girls’ school was Loreto College. The champion secondary boys’ school was Cadinia Memorial High.

YOUR TURN: The tables were turned when Hamish and Andy had to answer questions to another interviewer.

CONCENTRATION: This young South Australian competitor was all concentration coming round the gate during the slalom event.

Hamish and Andy ham it up on Mt Buller HAMISH and Andy of Fox FM’s drive show packed out the ABOM on Friday, July 22 for FOX FM’s popular annual broadcast from Mt Buller. The irreverent pair entertained the crowd with their usual banter which included plans to develop some new winter beverages including hot Coca Cola and fizzy peppermint tea for drinking while in the snow during their ‘Pants off Friday’ show. The Veronicas provided the music with mesmerising vocals as they performed their hit single “In my Blood. Another highlight of the show was

the official opening of a newly named ski run in the resort. “Windless Marissa was chosen by Fox FM listeners earlier this year when they got to choose someone to honour by naming something after them for doing something recognised as ‘legendary’. Marissa Goodsell won the competition for the dubious honour of having never passed wind in front of her husband of five years. Hence there is now a ski run at Mt Buller bearing the name “Windless Marissa. Wild weather and strong winds

ironically made it impossible for Marissa to open the run herself. Ski patroller Matt Modulon took on the duties and cut the ribbon braving the wild conditions and crossed live to Hamish and Andy from the blustery run to confirm the official opening had been performed. Fox FM brought 20 lucky competition winners up to Mt Buller for the broadcast and luckily the winners enjoyed fresh snowfall on Saturday so were able to get out on the slopes with 26cm of snow landing on the Friday night following the radio show.

ENTERTAINING: The Veronicas were guests of Hamish and Andy for their stint on Buller.

Springvale Snow Show 2016 MT BULLER hosted the annual Springvale Snow Fest on July 24. Organisers estimated some 38,000 local residents attended the day enjoying an array of delicious food, live entertainment and most exciting of all – the chance to play in real snow provided by Mt Buller. Niki Donaldson, sales and promotions manager for the Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management, said it’s one of the biggest events on the resorts’ winter

promotions calendar. “It’s such a fantastic opportunity to promote Mt Buller to the Melbourne market, we love attending the festival and talking to young families about coming to Mt Buller for a snow holiday, she said. “Seeing children’s faces when they experience snow for the first time is absolutely amazing and we hope their parents get the desire to bring them to Mt Buller for their next family holiday or weekend away.

BOO: Blake the Flake sneaks up on this family group enjoying themselves.

SNOWPLAY: Fenced in, thousands took advantage of playing in the snow pit.

INTRODUCING - ‘PIC OF THE WEEK’: Tony Harrington has taken over the Photo Shop on Mt Buller (formerly Fun Photos) and in each of the Buller News issues has offered a ‘pic of the week’. The first is mountain ranger Nick Reeves and his protege son Mitch Reeves making the most of the storm skiing conditions experienced recently on Buller. Nick says of son Mitch - this is a legend (and legend) in the making. Tony chose this shot because of the difficulty in taking it - being out in the storm.

Mt Buller announces brand new on snow ‘slopestyle’ event

MT BULLER has added a new event to the snow season calendar, with Mt Buller Slopestyle by Frank this Saturday, August 6. Slopestyle is an exciting freestyle skiing and snowboarding discipline that requires competitors to combine downhill speed with technical skills on a range of rails, jumps and other terrain park features. Rated the most exciting Winter Olympic sport at Sochi in 2014, Slopestyle has been added nationally to the Snow Sports Interschools lineup for 2016. The addition of the Slopestyle event to the Mt Buller calendar supports skiers and boarders from juniors all the way to aspiring Olympic athletes, for future competition in this growing discipline. Held over one action-packed day, the event will see skiers and snowboarders take on a challenging course in the Skyline Terrain Park. Competitors undertake two course runs, with the best run counting towards final results. Participants will be scored for amplitude, originality and quality of tricks. The event is open to all ages and skill levels across multiple divisions, where podium winners can collect their share in a $2000 cash prize, as well as products from K2, Yuki Threads and Rip Curl. Group manager of marketing, sales and events for Mt Buller Resort Management, Gillian Dobson, said the Slopestyle by Frank event will be a new and exciting event for both riders and spectators alike. “We are really excited to be hosting a brand new event this winter, which will see some of Australia’s best freestyle skiers and snowboarders battle it out on a purpose built course,” Ms Dobson said. This addition to the calendar places Mt Buller at the forefront

NEW NUMBERS: Tony from the Belmore Ski Club eager to assist Paul Scragg in getting that number on the wall.

“000” project at Mt Buller THE final stage of the “000” project at Mt Buller which was initiated by Paul Horton (CFA) has now started to roll out with the placement of the street address signs on the buildings. The signs, purchased by the Resort Management Board (RMB), will give visitors and locals a real location for emergency management, delivery of goods and navigation through the village. “Imagine yourself as new to the village and attempting to navigate to ‘Spark Ski Club’ of 19 Chamois Road Mt Buller,” said relieving CFA officer Paul Scragg. “As you walk you see signs with numbers and road names as seen below. “Visible street numbers are common to most people and as you see the numbers increasing or decreasing you can establish if you are going the correct way.” Mr Scragg has been leading the organisation along with Rick Pope and

Laurie Anticaglia (DELWP) in engaging with the building owners to get the numbers up. The underlying success of this project has been the collaboration between the RMB, CFA, ESTA, Vicpol, Ambulance Victoria, SES and DELWP. Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management chief executive officer, John Huber, said the project has been a fantastic collaboration that will provide a huge benefit to the resort. “The 000 project is one that has seen a huge amount of teamwork to get off the ground,” John said. “Traditionally buildings on Mt Buller have had site numbers, which do not necessarily follow a similar pattern to regular street numbering. “This new system will be a huge benefit to emergency services and provide the ability for quicker response times and simpler navigation.”

SLOPESTYLE: The new Slopestyle by Frank due to be launched this weekend has seen some keen snowboarders out there practising over the past few days in excellent weather conditions. Andrew Railton caught on camera these two boarders who reach heights and skills – making for what will be a fantastic slopestyle event. There are plenty of spectator spots available to watch this new event.

of freestyle skiing and we look forward to a thrilling day of competition. “There’s still time to register, so we’re encouraging all participants to get on board and be part of the action in what will be Vic-

toria’s premier Slopestyle event. “Plus, it’s a fantastic way to gain experience in the discipline ahead of the Interschool series.” For further information on the event visit the Events section on mtbuller.com.au.

MT BULLER’S eccentric artist in residence Colin Hyett explores the vibrancy of our precious mountain in his eclectic interpretations of the region and those who embrace it. Hyett, 40, has been painting for some 30 years and is a resident artist on Mt Buller for three months of the year. His favourite medium at present is oils on Belgian linen. “Fashions on the snowďŹ eld relates back to abstract such as people moving around the mountain, movement of people on the run with some

elements of landscapes but abstracted. From the electric energy of snowboarders to the frenetic madness of Bourke Street to the elegance of an Olympic skier, Hyett’s contemporary look at the people, the colour and the vibrancy of the snow globe we call Mt Buller is inspired, cheerful and delicious to behold. Hyett looks at landscapes and, celebrating the entire spectrum of colour, he captures perfectly Mt Buller’s broad range of states; from its wild natural remoteness of

the chutes to the hectic collection of energy of our village. And as a creative twist on the archetypal alpine-lodge deerhead ‘Yes, deer’ is a collection of taxidermy, brightly painted in graphic uro patterns evoking the sense of fun and quirkiness that Colin’s very presence has brought to our town. Hyett studied at Monash University as an undergraduate with honours in painting and sculpting. He is also a landscape designer running his own Mornington Peninsula business - which he leaves to his

staff during winter. He says although he loves moving around the mountain he paints from photographs and his latest taxidermy heads being painted - “dressed as he prefers to call them - are different. Hyett will open his latest exhibition on Mt Buller this Friday, August 6 at Alpine Central from 5pm to 8pm with drinks for guests. He invites all to drop in over the next few weeks up until August 27 and on August 20 at 5pm he will be in attendance to talk about his artworks.

Mt Buller property news...

It doesn’t have to be expensive IT has long been thought that all properties on Mt Buller are expensive. There are many examples to prove that this is not the case, and below are some examples. SNOWFLAKE 2 priced at just $390,000 + is another affordable offer. Wonderfully comfortable and well maintained this two bedroom apartment is located on the ground floor in the Snowflake building. A fully optioned kitchen, dining and living area complete with two big leather couches for relaxing after a hard day on the slopes is hard to beat. Of the two bedrooms, one has a queen sized bed while the second has two bunks with one a double/ single combo, sleeping a total of seven.

Both bedrooms have built-in robes. All heating and hot water are included in the annual fees of approximately $10,000. Capping off this spotless apartment is the on-site parking by permit. And yet another option for the lower end of the budget scale is WHISTLER 5 - with low body corps plus carpark on title and priced at just $370,000 +. In a quiet boutique building is this two bedroom apartment, sleeping six and offers views of Bourke Street and Skyline. A well maintained unit with spacious open plan living, large well equipped kitchen, powder room, separate laundry/drying room and ski storage in foyer is situated just a short walk to Chamois Chair and Village shuttle at front door.

Low body corporate levy of approximately $7000 pa and heated car parking space on title, makes this an attractive Mt Buller Apartment. And lastly TWIN TOWERS 104 A. SUMMIT ROAD - $250,000+. The vendor has relocated overseas and must sell at this greatly reduced price. This sunny one bedroom apartment in the perfect location for ski in/ski out to Bourke Street, recently renovated and kept in perfect condition. It offers one queen sized bed along with a pull-out couch plus chaise longue, this flat can sleep five, a modern kitchen, with full oven, dishwasher etc, large flat screen TV and a washer/dryer to complete the package. Annual outgoings are less than $10,000.

EVERY COMFORT: The kitchen area of the Twin Towers 104 apartment may be small but it has everything you need for your snow home away from home.

Enzian Hotel offers lots with more potential THE perfect investment with potential to hire for the whole family and more - and all year round if you wish - the Enzian Hotel on Buller. On the Trip Advisor site Enzian is now ranked first as a desirable destination on Mt Buller. With that in mind the hotel offers 16 rooms with 56 beds available for rental accommodation plus a rental management of three flats owned by other owners. In addition there are other private flats which could be managed by the hotel should the owners wish to rent them. Providing a one stop central hotel, it also offers a restaurant and bar which caters for 115 guests. The kitchen is large, fully functional with cool room, freezer, new dish washer and storage space. In addition, there are staff quarters for 16 people, a large laundry, ski storage, drying room and basement storage. Major renovations have

been carried out to the rooms, bathrooms, kitchen and storage facilities. The kitchen and dining room were re-roofed in 2014. Having been under new management for the past three seasons it has seen significant improvements in customer service, dining, return visitation and profitability. There have been extensive upgrades and renovations to the Enzian giving it a new lease of life with the potential to become an all year round hotel offering summer and winter accommodation.
