More snow, more fun to kick off the season

SNOW, ski lifts open, and plenty of entertainment promises to make the opening of the ski season at Mt Buller this weekend one to remember.

The resort’s most popular ski run, Bourke St, will open for skiing and boarding this Saturday, June 6, with the resort looking forward to opening more lifts soon.

Off the slopes, the resort will celebrate the official opening of the snow season on Saturday in the Village Square including free face painting, complimentary glühwein, fireworks and a live performance by acclaimed Melbourne rock band, Calling All Cars.

around $500,000, with the purchase of a new submersible pump which will increase snowmaking capacity by 30 per cent and allow the resort to pump 800 litres of snow per second during peak periods,” she said.

Opening celebrations fun for all the family MT BULLER’S official Opening Weekend is always full of fun and celebration, and this season is no exception.

Snow, or no snow, there is plenty of activity right across the weekend on the mountain, guaranteeing fun for all ages.

Kick off the snow season with fireworks and festivities aplenty, with lots of free entertainment and a long weekend of alpine hospitality including the Olympic Winter Institute annual fundraising dinner.

Festivities will kick off from 4pm on Saturday with free fun for the kids including face painting, a giant snowman and slushies for all (as well as gluwhein for the adults).

This will be followed by the official opening proceedings, entertainment from the Barry Possum show, live music, plus the always spectacular fireworks display when the sun goes down.

Various venues across the mountain will have their own special parties and festival offerings so you can celebrate long into the night.

Also on the slopes, the much-loved Tirol T-Bar has received a major upgrade with the existing diesel motor replaced by an electric version.

Not only will this improve the reliability of this lift, which has been operating since 1972, but further underpins the resort’s commitment to implementing environmentally friendly solutions on the mountain.

Mr Huber said Mt Buller Mt Stirling had made some important changes to the resort entry process too. “A range of new initiatives in place for the 2015 snow season include online purchasing and license plate recognition (LPR) technology, which is set to ensure

visitors beneďŹ t from better value and quicker travel time through the entrance gates,â€? he said.

Visitors will also notice some significant changes to the facilities at Telephone Box Junction at Mt Stirling.

Over the summer period the visitor centre, incorporating the cafĂŠ, ski hire, ski patrol base and public shelter have received a refurbishment, improving the look and usability of the area.

Extended speed limits introduced on Mt Buller Rd FOLLOWING community consultation VicRoads has decided to extend two current speed limit zones on Mt Buller Road near MansďŹ eld.

The current 50 km/h and 80 km/h will be altered on Mount Buller Road as follows: s THE KM H SPEED ZONE will be extended 200 metres east from near the Highton Lane intersection, past the BP service station and entrance into the service road; and s THE KM H SPEED ZONE will be extended 370 metres east from near Greenvale Lane intersection.

VIcRoads regional manager, Bryan Sherritt, said the extension of current speed zones will improve safety for road users travelling through the two major intersections, as well as allowing safe access to the various businesses operating along this section of Mount Buller Road. â&#x20AC;&#x153;VicRoads will also improve the advance signing on

Greenvale Lane approaching Mount Buller Road to warn drivers of the intersection and encourage them to use the arterial road network,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have consulted with our road safety partners, Victoria Police and MansďŹ eld Shire Council, regarding the speed zone extensions and they are supportive of these changes.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Sherrit said VicRoads was extremely pleased with the communityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s participation in a recent review of the speed limit on Mount Buller Road in MansďŹ eld. â&#x20AC;&#x153;After receiving safety concerns from the community about the section of this road between Highton Lane and the MansďŹ eld Veterinary Clinic over recent months, we put the call out to the community to provide feedback about a change in speed limit,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;VicRoads received comments from more than 40 community members who expressed various views about a

speed limit change, but also raised concerns about the intersections at Highton Lane and Greenvale Lane.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Sherritt said when deciding on the best course of action to improve safety at this location, VicRoads has considered all the feedback from the community, as well as abutting development, nature and level of road user activity, existing operating speeds and speed limits on adjacent roads. â&#x20AC;&#x153;VicRoads has also looked at the crash history at this location and found that majority of crashes have occurred at the Highton Lane and Greenvale Lane intersections,â&#x20AC;? he said.

As a result, VicRoads will not introduce any new speed limits on this section of road. â&#x20AC;&#x153;VicRoads would like to thank the community for contributing to the speed limit review,â&#x20AC;? Mr Sherritt said.

The extended speed zones will come into effect from this Friday, June 5.

Eat, Sleep, Ski, repeat...

TAKE IT SLOW: When driving in poor weather conditions and snow - take it slower than normal and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make it a black run.

Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make the roads a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;black runâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; this winter WITH the opening of the 2015 ski season, all roads lead to Mt Buller and Mt Stirling Alpine resort for the long weekend.

And with the opening comes a huge increase in trafďŹ c to and from the resort.

Combined with typical winter weather conditions, this places additional hazards in the path of drivers.

Factors such as fog, ice, snow, rain, and even sun glare will impact on reaction and stopping times, judgment, and visibility, and drivers need to modify their driving behaviour accordingly.

The Transport Accident Commission (TAC) website has a list of tips for driving in all weather conditions that you may encounter, and they are: Reduce speed â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Slow down in bad weather as your recovery time is better if something goes wrong.

Fog - If you see fog and mist ahead reduce speed before you enter it. In very thick fog make sure you always know where you are on the road and never drive at a speed that forces you to guess what is ahead. Avoid overtaking.

Rain - Heavy rain can have the same effect as fog with less visibility making it

harder to judge where you are on the road in relation to other vehicles.

Ice and Snow - Drive slowly on ice and snow to retain traction. Braking should be gentle and not left to the last second, and use an even pressure on the accelerator to lessen the chances of wheel spin and loss of control.

Sun glare - Beware of blinding glare from sunlight either directly from the sun or reďŹ&#x201A;ected from other cars and objects. You may need to reduce speed as well as use aids such as the sun visor and sunglasses.

Hazard lights - Turn these on in hazardous weather conditions where visibility is reduced.

Every season, Victoria Police Highway Patrol, often assisted by the police helicopter, catch hundreds of vehicles speeding to and from the mountain, while the winding, steep road from Mirimbah to the top has been the scene of a number of accidents.

This winter season, make your drive to Buller a controlled, safe blue run, not an out of control black run, and save your spills for the snow.

2015 is shaping up to be another exciting season on top of the world at Mt Buller, after a stellar 2014 that saw record snowfalls and visitor numbers.

Henry Sayers will walk from Mirimbah gates to the village square on Saturday, June 6, to raise funds and awareness of Down Syndrome.

Starting at 10am Henry is hoping to arrive in the village by official opening time of 4pm.

“I am doing this to raise funds to give those with Down Syndrome and their families the chance to enjoy a snow experience after seeing the enjoyment first hand through my sister, Olivia,” Henry said.

“Over the years we have seen the enjoyment that Olivia has derived from skiing.

“It makes her smile like no other activity and with all the layers, a helmet and goggles no one judges her - she is just Olivia.

“I ask you to give as much as you can to give these children the chance to experience the snow and put a smile on their face.”

Henry is using the ‘mycause’ website to raise the funds and donations will be gratefully accepted.

OLYMPIC Winter Institute of Australia (OWIA) athletes have had an impressive Northern Hemisphere winter, highlighted by a number of medal performances at the World Championships and World Cup level.

In total 14 medals were won by OWIA athletes in World Cup and World Championship competition.

In Ski Cross Mt Buller’s Anton Grimus and Sami Kennedy-Sim both recorded top-10 World Cup performances, after advancing to the semi-final stage in Arosa, Switzerland.

And in Snowboard Cross Alex “Chumpy” Pullin finished the season ranked second in the world, the highest ranking by an Australian in 2014-2015.

Chumpy’s second place ranking was achieved following back-to-back podiums, including one victory, in the final two races of the season.

Mt Buller’s Belle Brockhoff had a consistent and much improved season, advancing through to the semi-final stage or better in every event she contested.

Belle was one place from the podium on two occasions, finishing fourth at both the X-Games in Aspen, CO, USA, and in the final World Cup of the season in La Molina, Spain.

Jarryd Hughes was also close to landing on the podium for the second time in his career, finishing fourth in Veysonnaz, Switzerland, when teammate Alex Pullin won the event, the first

time in history two Australian athletes have featured in the same Snowboard Cross final.

Most encouragingly, a number of emerging athletes achieved first time international and podium success.

It was a successful year for the Flying Kangaroo Aerial Skiing program, with all three Mt Buller athletes winning a major event during the season.

Laura Peel became Australia’s first sporting World Champion of 2015, when she won the gold medal in Kreischberg, Austria during January.

Laura is the fourth Australian woman to win an aerial skiing World Championship title and follows in the footsteps of Mt Buller aerial skiing legends, Kirstie Marshall 1997, Jacqui Cooper 1999 and Alisa Camplin in 2003.

Danielle Scott also had an outstanding season finishing the season ranked a team high third in the world.

Danielle won two World Cup medals which included her first World Cup victory in Moscow, Russia.

Renee McElduff also won her first ever World Cup event, after taking gold in Lake Placid, NY, USA, during February.

During February, the 2015 Alpine World Ski Championships took place in Vail-Beaver Creek resort in the USA and Greta Small provided Australia’s highlights of the Championships when she finished 18th in the combined event.

Britt Cox secured World Champion-

ship bronze with the best performance of her career.

By finishing third, the 20-year-old became just the second Australian female World Championship mogul skiing medallist.

Matt Graham had a breakthrough season, finishing the season ranked fifth in the world after winning the first World Cup medals of his career.

In total Matt won two silver medals and one bronze medal.

20-year-old halfipe snowboard athlete Scotty James secured his first major title, claiming a gold medal at the 2015 World Championships in Park and Pipe.

Scotty declared his intentions in the final by putting down a highly impressive performance in his first run.

It was this run of 91.50 points that the rest of the field were unable to equal.

Two-time Olympic halfpipe medallist, Torah Bright, finished in sixth place at the World Championships, after qualifying in third.

The following week in Aspen, CO, USA, Torah had an impressive bronze medal performance at the Winter XGames.

Slopestyle skier Russ Henshaw became a dual World Championship medallist when he picked up the silver at the 2015 World Championships.

Russ skied brilliantly throughout the event putting down three solid runs above 90 points and scoring just 0.8 of a point less than the gold medallist.

Changes include a range of initiatives in place including online purchasing and licence plate recognition (LPR) technology set to ensure visitors will benefit from better value and quicker travel time in 2015.

Customers using the Mt Buller website or Mt Buller Live app will be able to prepurchase resort entry, overnight parking and over snow taxi tickets before they arrive, as well as vehicle season passes.

Online purchasing benefits the customer in several ways: a discount is applied for online purchases, and visitors who have printed and displayed their resort entry pass will be able to utilise a special express lane at the resort entry point.

Following a trial during the 2014 snow season, the resort will also roll out LPR technology this year, designed to provide priority resort access to vehicles that have pre-printed their resort entry pass and displayed it in their windscreen, greatly improving the flow of vehicles through the resort entry point.

CFA prepared for winter season on Buller

By DAVID MIMS MT BULLER CFA as always will be a critical presence on the mountain this snow season, with District 23 operations manager Paul Horton based at the resort again.

Already much has been done in preparing for the season, carrying on the good work of previous years.

As well as overseeing brigade support and volunteer training, Mr Horton will be focused on three special projects across winter.

The first is 000 (Triple Zero) Integration.

“As we enter the second year of the Integration project, (it went live last year) I wrote to all lease owners around six weeks ago to again highlight the benefits and how they can contribute to the overall system,” Mr Horton said.

“They need to reflect their new address and numbering into their documentation and the information sheet the project provided.

“Specifically it asks the caller to state the Name of the lodge and the Mountain then detail the specific need requiring assistance.”

Describing the benefits, he said last year there were a num-

ber of incidents where the new system now sees emergency agency activation in seconds.

“This improved capability allows for agency response much faster with more detail on which to act in support of the community,” he said.

This project was recently recognised at an Australasian awards ceremony in Melbourne for “outstanding commitment and development of promoting community risk awareness”.

Mr Horton also noted there has also been much work completed by the resort management board on emergency markers.

“They will strengthen the

ability of hikers and cross country skiers to seek assistance urgently that will in turn allow Agencies to respond to that specific site” he said.

Preplans is the second project.

In preparing for possible emergencies and helping to reduce risk, Preplans are a key part of building environment engagement.

Preplans are specifically designed for mmergency management agencies to understand a site, and also allow the CFA to form strong partnerships at a local level.

Input comes from commu-

nity connections, brigade contacts, and integration of relevant documents to form a completed and sustainable Preplan.

Mr Horton described part of the preparedness arrangement as “the need for detection and firefighting systems to be working”.

Known as Essential Services, CFA will require each commercial premises to display their current document for inspection.

The aim of this is to ensure all commercial premises meet the needs of the Certificate of Occupancy through the Building Code.

The third project is Alpine Vehicle.

As described in a separate article, CFA is trialling (proof of concept) a vehicle that suits the alpine environment all year round.

Coming from Denmark, Mr Horton said the vehicle will give great flexibility in water delivery.

“The quick transition from wheels to trax (approximately 60 minutes) provides a flexibility in our fleet like never before,” he said.

This season Mt Buller will once again be in safe hands thanks to these projects, and the co-operation between the CFA and the various stakeholders on the mountain.

Resort to trial new CFA Ultralight Landcruiser THE Mt Buller CFA will showcase the latest in snow vehicle technology this winter with their Ultralight Landcruiser.

Featuring new Mattrack wheels and a fully imported Fire Express pumpset unit, the twincab is everything a mobile CFA vehicle should be and represents the only ute of its kind in Australia.

“The vehicle, known as Mt Buller Ultralight, is obviously based on a new Toyota Landcruiser twincab,” CFA operations officer for the North East region, Paul Horton said.

“The concept of the design is to give us a vehicle we can use all year round on Mt Buller – winter and summer – and to do that, we needed to find a way to pull the wheels off and replace them with something better, because in the snow, tyres don’t work, chains don’t work.”

In the middle of winter, around 220 beds on Mt Buller are unreachable by the traditional CFA track vehicles due to their cumbersome design and weight.

“When your talking about vehicles with tyres, the ground pressure placed by tyres is just to heavy for the surface – by installing tracks, what you are doing is distributing the weight and getting it down to effectively one PSI – which allows us

“This is the first vehicle of its kind

in the CFA, and the simplicity of it is just wonderful.”

Although local crews are keen

to put the Ultralight through its winter paces, Mr Horton said how it performed over the summer was

equally as important.

“What makes this vehicle so effective is that we can use it year round – effectively volunteers are driving the same vehicle 12 months of the year, only the wheels are different,” he said.

“With a one hour change over time, from tyres to tracks, there are not many environments the Ultralight can’t access quickly.

“At 250 thousand that vehicle is available all year round, at 1.2 million the larger track vehicles can only be used for a few weeks of the year – and as the tracks on the Ultralight are able to be driven on bitumen quickly as well, it will make our response time that much better.”

The Ultralight has also benefited from a fully imported Fire Express pumpset, meaning that volunteers are ready to fight fires in a matter of seconds.

“It’s got a fully integrated turn-key operation, and is ready to go in about 20 seconds,” Mr Horton said.

“It was deployed at the Ancona fires back in February and we had really positive feedback from that.”

The Ultralight will be in service for two years as part of a trial to investigate its effectiveness across the seasons, though there is no doubt in Mr Horton’s mind that it is the right build for the job.

Proposed road takes a Easier & Safer step towards approval way to Stay Dry

By PETER HUNT THE proposed Mt Buller to Howqua Gap Road has taken another step towards approval with the completion of the ‘Mt Buller-Mt Stirling Link Road Advisory Committee’ hearing.

The issue has become a title fight between the Victorian National Parks Association (VNPA) and Mount Stirling Development Taskforce in one corner, and the Mt Buller and Mt Stirling Alpine Resort Management Board (ARMB) in the other.

The issue has been dragging on since 2008 (see the breakout).

ARMB’s proposed road between the Mt Buller Alpine Resort at Horse Hill and Howqua Gap runs along the north side of the Cornhill ridgeline with the rationale being a road primarily for emergency purposes.

The planned road will involve a three kilometre 25 metre wide corridor along the contour where Alpine Ash transitions into Snow Gum. The VNPA points out that a road link already exists on the south side of Cornhill from Horse Hill linking the two.

Martin Hunt, secretary of the Mount Stirling Development Taskforce, said that the existing road is only one and a half kilometres longer than the proposed road and is already trafficable for two wheel drive vehicles, so could be upgraded for a lot less than building a new road.

“In fact, the first half of the current road from Horse Hill to the quarry is a good standard road that allows two buses to pass without any problems - it just needs a tarred surface,” he said.

Mr Hunt, along with other opponents to the application are worried that all vegetation, including old growth forest, within that corridor will be removed.

UPGRADE: The current road near the Howqua Gap. THE history of the dispute over the road began in 2008, when the ARMB lodged a planning permit application for buildings and works associated with the construction of the road and the removal of vegetation.

The VNPA lodged an objection to the application.

On March 24, 2014 the then Coalition Minister for Planning, Matthew Guy, issued a ‘notice of decision’ to grant a permit subject to conditions.

However, Mt Buller Mt Stirling Alpine Resort Management Board (ARMB) chief executive officer John Huber told the Mansfield Courier that “this is definitely not so” .

“As part of the application we have to signify a 25 metre corridor that would include the eight metre road,” he said.

“We would then place the road within that corridor in a position to weave around objects, such as old growth stands etc.”

ARMB is primarily arguing that the road is needed for emergency purposes.

But Mr Hunt said the current CFA philosophy is to stay where you are if you cannot leave early.

Mr Huber explained that the issue of fires is not the only emergency issue - emergency access is the main focus.

“The mountain annually can have the access road shut down by traffic accidents, fallen trees or landslips,” he said.

“Coming out of the various royal commissions, the need for more access and egress points is essential.

“We have even completed a scenario of a bus accident on the ascent road, which showed that getting emergency vehicles above an accident would be a problem currently.”

At this hearing, the environmental impacts of the destruction by the new road were stressed by VNPA representatives.

Mr Huber said this project has had more investigations than any other proposal in the alps.

“Flora and fauna studies on both south and north roads showed that there would be effects,” he said.

“However, we are aware of the sensitivities and any offsets will be made locally.”

The next step is now in the hands of Minister Wynne.

Bringing order to the chaos of parking on the mountains

By LIZ WEBB YOU thought Melbourne parking was hard work.

Early indications are that season 2015 could be the record breaker, which means thousands of visitors driving up to Mount Buller to enjoy great snow, sunshine and fun on the slopes.

Spare a thought for Jim Hughes, the man who directs the parking of up to 2500 cars on a busy day.

When the car parks are full the roadside parking often goes down as far as the Plough Shed.

One Saturday last year it got to Mirimbah.

Jim has been on the job for 37 seasons and most of his staff have been with him for at least 10 years or more.

His staff are his winter family and he often puts on a barbecue and beer after a really busy day.

Jim lives at the Plough Shed all winter and he and wife Robyn spend summer in Glenrowan or cruising the world.

It was in 1976 that Jim came to Mansfield with the aim of buying the Mansfield Hotel, he actually ended up operating as a silent partner, but then at different times, over the years, he also managed the Commercial and the Delatite Hotels.

Jim and Robyn are also fondly remembered in Mansfield for the 15 years that they operated and leased the swimming pool from the Mansfield Shire.

According to Jim, one of his most memorable jobs was as transport manager for the Man from Snowy River film, where he became a firm favourite with the cast and crew.

“I guess I got that job because I knew about the history of horses in the High Country as I was involved with the annual Victorian Great Mountain Race and ‘called’

“I met Kirk Douglas, Sigrid Thornton and Tom Burlinson who were all really great people to work with,” he recalls.

“When the movie was released, Malcolm and Tammy Fraser were guests of honour at the movie premiere and then the next day was challenging as they stood on either side of me as I compered that year’s Cracks Cup.” Jim’s other career highlight was being nominated as a Mt Buller Hall of Fame legend.

Jim takes the bad with the good.

He still wonders at the impatience and rudeness and bad driving that he experiences but he loves his job and plans to stay on for as long as possible.

So what keeps Jim coming back for more?

Eric’s bringing back a great new SCV future

By LIZ WEBB IF the name Eric Siewert seems familiar to regular Mt Buller visitors, the odds are that you’ve probably come across him at one of the mountain’s large hospitality establishments.

Now, this resilient hospitality personality is set to revitalise the Ski Club of Victoria (SCV).

Ten years ago, Eric and his wife Liz visited Mt Buller for a quick holiday, loved the area and before they returned to El Questro resort, which Eric managed, they bought land in Merrijig and called the High Country home.

In 2005, Eric was appointed manager of the Mt Buller Chalet Hotel and started his Mt Buller story.

Over the years Eric has also managed Cattlemen’s Restaurant, Spurs and Abom, increasing patronage and revenue in all these establishments.

As a member of Mt Buller Chamber of Commerce he has worked with Mt Buller tourist operators to create events and activities that continue to make Mt Buller a premier snow resort.

Eric, who was away for two years, was approached and accepted the SCV Board’s proposal to take on management

of the Whitt and Kandahar.

As General Manager, Eric is particularly excited with this opportunity to continue the SCV traditions and contribute to the history of one of Mt Buller’s first member clubs.

“A passionate group with a love of snow sports started this club and many of the original families are still represented.

“In 2015, our enthusiastic and motivated team can’t wait to continue building on this original passion.

“We aim to provide our members and guests with a new level of excellence in hospitality.”

To achieve these aims, Eric has already implemented a number of kitchen alterations and improvements that will generate faster restaurant service, create more function availability and provide extra comfort for members and guests.

Enthusiastically, Eric emphasised that this is a year of reinvigoration.

“In 2015 the emphasis is on warm mountain comfort food, cocktails and coffee, functions, entertainment, parties and member racing with great customer service,” he said.

“The Ski Club of Victoria really is The Place to Be!”

Familiar face returns Marcus indicates he will retain – but with his own slant.

“I plan to continue with the pasta but with my own twist,” Marcus said just before taking over.

“I will also be incorporating some slow braised dishes with lots of winter warmth and perhaps a few new and surprise dishes,” he said.

“I might even introduce some theme nights such as Indian curries and even consider regular Sunday lunches with quick pizzas – to make good use of the pizza oven.”

Marcus has had a varied chef’s life up to now.

He trained in London and then travelled throughout Europe before

coming to Australia some 20 years ago where he has definitely settled in.

Since arriving in Oz he has worked all over the country but keeps coming back to Mt Buller and the Mansfield area where he is now settled with a wife and one young child.

He worked several seasons on Mt Buller being a chef at The Chalet and then operating the kitchen at Duck Inn for two seasons.

Marcus officially takes over the Mill Inn this weekend, but for at least one week the two chefs Michael and Marcus will be on board to meet and greet some very welcomed clientele.

ALWAYS CHECK: For safety when skiing don’t use ‘old boots’.

Ski boots - How long do they last?

IT’S a tricky question.

Most manufactures say ski boots should last from 100 to 200 ski days or about five years.

Of course this is going to depend on a truck load of variables.

How many days a winter you ski?

How close your fit is?

What level of performance your boot is aimed at and how hard you ski?

If you ski only 10 days a winter your boots could well last for 10 years or more provided they are looked after.

Those luckily enough to ski every day in Australia followed by a northern winter will see the best of their boot gone in one year.

In most cases it’s the liner

that simply packs out due to wear.

The shells could still be in pretty good nick.

It’s usually impossible to buy original liners five years down the track.

Models and shapes have changed by then.

Aftermarket alternatives can now provide a bunch of custom liner options to keep your boots going.

In fact they are quite often a better liner in the first place.

The Intuition liner that’s

made from a New Zealand invented heat mouldable foam is very comfortable and very warm for those who feel the cold.

The liner I use myself is a cork flow based liner developed by an expat Aussie Sven Coomer who now lives in Aspen, Colorado.

The SvenFit or Zipfit as it’s known is heat moulded but never sets hard.

The cork flow material reacts to how you are skiing.

They never pack out and you can remould them many times and even transfer them to a different shell in the future.

Foam injected liners from the French specialist, Sidas Conformable, offer exceptional precision with improved comfort and flex.

There is, however, one issue

we need to take into account.

In Australia we end up walking in our boots on bitumen, concrete and even gravel.

Excessive wear of the boot sole is the end result.

With extreme wear this will result in your boots no longer being compatible with your bindings which can cause the bindings not to function correctly.

So check your boot soles for wear.

If you have screw on soles these should be replaced when the screws show signs of wear.

Easy transition from grommet to the Olympics

By RHYLL McCORMACK JARROD Wouters may well be living every grommet’s dream.

Snowboarding year round in locations across the globe, and mentoring aspiring Olympic athletes, it is however a far cry from his first snow experience back in school.

“I wasn’t one of those kids who was always up at the snow on a board – I didn’t really even give it a go till I went up with my school,” Jarrod said.

“It was only then that I fell in love with it and thought, this is what I want to do.”

Jarrod, together with his wife Christine, run Transition Snowboarding, a training base for kids who can’t get enough of this Alpine sport.

Based at Merrijig, the Wouters have an 11 year association with Mt Buller but also have camp bases in Thredbo, New Zealand and Colorado.

“Fundamentally, the idea is to give kids the opportunity to enjoy snowboarding,” Jarrod said.

“We also wanted to provide a means for kids who didn’t live in the area to access boarding.”

Starting off with weekend camps, the Wouters have grown from a small operation to now providing a home-awayfrom-home for aspiring athletes, with four month camps in Colorado a popular option.

“The overseas camps are to provide year round snow boarding experiences for those that are keen to compete on an international level,” Jarrod said.

“The overseas stuff is for pretty serious boarders - it’s full on.”

The problem, Jarrod explained, was that those who wanted to compete on an international stage found it hard to train in Australia with our limited snow seasons.

“It’s hard competing

against kids who have snow at their back door all year round,” Jarrod said.

Back on Buller, Transition Snowboards still offer weekend camps and longer, along with a special program for those locals attending the annexe school on the mountain.

“A lot of kids come here with a view to making a career out of being a snowboarding instructor as well,” Jarrod said.

“These kids understand that the level snowboarding is at internationally is incredibly competitive – and living in a country like Australia, where there isn’t snow year round – can be very difficult on a competitive stage.

“So these kids instead want to stay and be involved in the sport, and they see instructing as a viable and enjoyable alternative.”

Two times Olympian Scotty James is a former Transition Snowboards student, as is current champion snowboarder siblings Luke, Cameron and Lauren Staveley.

Transition caters for and coaches all disciplines of snowboarding: Slopestyle, Boardercross, Halfpipe and Freeriding.

“Whether it’s for fun, competition or just pushing yourself at something you thought you couldn’t do, we cover all aspects of the sport,” Jarrod said.

An award winning coach himself, Jarrod is simply keen to see more and more take up this exciting sport.

“We believe there’s not many things that are more enjoyable than snowboarding and making new, like minded friends in the alpine environment.

Three questions you need to ask when buying an alpine apartment

OWNING an apartment in the snow is a dream for many keen skiers and boarders.

Waking up in your own apartment to see the snow-covered gum trees or returning after an exhausting day on the slopes and falling into your own bed – this is the dream.

But romance aside, buying an alpine property is a commercial decision and we have the top three questions you need to ask.

1. What am I buying?

Buying an alpine apartment is different from traditional sale and purchase of land because the mountain is (mostly) owned and controlled by the government.

It is called ‘Crown Land’ and is leased to companies and individuals on a long-term leasehold basis.

The most typical form of ownership on the mountain is for a company to hold a lease from the

government (head lease), often referred to as a lessee company, and individuals purchase shares in the company which entitles them to a sublease of an individual apartment.

You should note, the term of your sublease will only be for as long as the company’s lease, so always check how long is left to run on the head lease.

Many newer subleases can now be registered with the Land Titles Office to provide a clear and safe security.

A most important reason to know what you are buying is finance.

The type of leasehold arrangement for alpine property has a significant impact on whether banks are prepared to lend.

A registrable sublease is encouraging for the banks as they can register a mortgage in a transparent and secure manner.

2. What are the outgoings?

When purchasing an apartment within a body corporate, you must carefully consider the building’s outgoings including: electricity, upcoming repairs, insurance and management fees and what proportion of those you will be required to pay.

Heated driveways and footpaths can be a luxury, but also expensive to run.

Always request a copy of the annual budget for the building.

This will detail insurances, land tax, maintenance budgets, management fees and other expenses you will be liable to contribute towards.

3. Investment returns - what is the rental arrangement?

As well as a wonderful lifestyle choice, an alpine apartment can be a good source of rental returns.

“The kitchen used to be at the front of the pub in a tiny corner of what is now an extensive dining room,” Rosemary recalls.

The hotel now boasts a huge, commercial kitchen with cool rooms and storage areas at the rear of the building.

The reputation of the meals, under Carlie’s guidance as head chef, sees the hotel regularly serving in excess of 160 meals in a night – and on occasions two sittings are required to

cater for the demand.

In winter the hotel sees a lot of the ski traffic stop on their way home.

“A good hearty meal before they set off on that long drive back to the city does them good,” Rosemary said.

Although there is no accommodation at the hotel itself, Merrijig has a lot of B&B’s, lodges and rental homes which, when occupied, sees a boost in patronage at the hotel.

Kevin said before the family purchased the hotel, they were already familiar with it as they have been skiing at Mt Buller for more than 30 years and often stopped in.

“The girls grew up skiing on Mt Buller and were also working here as managers.

“When it came up for sale they suggested we buy it and run it as our family business,” Kevin says. “Ït’s been good over the past five years, but as Rosemary and I were intending to retire, we think it is time to hand over to someone else - Rosemary and I will go travelling and the girls can either stay around or go off and do other things as well.

“But it’s time we did what most retirees do – and that’s go off and enjoy ourselves and see a bit more of the world.”

ing the freehold premises with the leasehold only being sold.
