Fun on Bunn Run

POPULAR 7 News meteorologist Jane Bunn was at Mt Buller last Friday and had the honour of being the first to ski the run that carries her name.

The Bunn Run connects Wombat Run to the popular Wombat lift and was named after Jane this winter to mark her connection to Mt Buller as its official weather forecaster.

The run was previously known as Wombat extension and is ideally suited for intermediate skiers.

Buller Ski Lifts general manager Laurie Blampied said the ‘new run’ recognises the hard work put in by weathers forecasters such as

Jane, who play a big part in the winter season.

She presented the weather at Mt Buller on Thursday night predicting around 10cm of fresh snow overnight – and she nailed the forecast with snowflakes falling on cue from 10pm through the evening and well into the next morning.

Jane was joined by Mt Buller legend and Olympic aerial ski champion Jacqui Cooper for a ski on the Bunn Run during the morning, the two sharing plenty of laughs on the chairlift and the slopes and even throwing a few cheeky snowballs at the Bunn Run sign to christen it.

“I was thrilled to ski down the Bunn Run for the first time, especially with an Olympian beside me showing the way,” said an effusive Jane.

“It’s quite amazing to have a ski run named after me.

“I never thought anything like this would ever happen.”

The fresh snowfall allowed the run to open for the first time and Jane and Jacqui were thrilled to be the first to test it out with a few neat turns.

Jane is a keen skier and this visit was perfect timing allowing her to get out on the snow before rushing back to Melbourne later that day to deliver her weather forecast from the Channel 7 studio.

A chat with new CEO WITH Mark Bennetts (pictured) on board as the new chief executive officer of the Mt Buller & Mt Stirling Resort Management, Mt Buller News thought we’d catch up every couple of weeks and chat about how things are going.

Buller News (BN): Let’s start with your appointment - how long will you be here?

MB (Mark Bennetts): I was hoping for a standard three year contract. But given the government’s alpine review, my contract is for one year with a one year option. So I need to make sure I do a good job. Hopefully either the Buller and Stirling board will then reappoint me if there are no governance changes, or there’ll be a role for me in any new structure that the government announces.

BN: It’s been nearly two months since you started. How are you finding the role?

MB: Time has just flown. I’ve met and talked with so many people, who’ve all been very generous with their time. They’ve helped me learn about the mountains, current issues, and their views on what could be done to make things better.

BN: So what have you been hearing?

MB: Actually, it’s quite a mixture. Some things are immediate and easy, while others are longer-term and much harder.

BN: What are some of the immediate issues?

MB: Safety was high on the list. The heaters under the footpath outside the supermarket are broken, so we’re now regularly clearing that area.

The huge demand for snowplay is creating congestion on the toboggan slopes, so we’re rostering more marshals.

We’re also working with Guest Services and Ski Patrol to try to stop people tobogganing in unsafe areas.

Visitor experience is another issue.

Many first-timers don’t speak fluent English, and navigating around the mountain can be hard.

So we’ve colour-coded and numbered the carparks to help people remember where they’ve parked.

Sox, Jimmy Hughes, John Perks, Steve Marshall, Laurie Blampied, Mal Rowsell and I have identified ways to squeeze in more cars and reduce the chance of having to turn away day trippers on busy Saturdays.

And we’re taking a different approach to managing departures at the end of the day,

which is reducing the long queue through the Village Square.

Cost is another concern.

I agree with views that the RMB structure was too “top heavy”, so we’re not replacing some vacant senior positions.

BN: So in wrapping up, what bigger issues have been raised?

MB: Snowmaking water is key.

But the new dam won’t progress without a planning permit.

Two board members, Andy Evans and Michelle Croughan, are working hard to address government questions so that a permit will hopefully be issued.

In the meantime Tom Gibbs is looking at whether we can eke any more water out of the current system.

There’s also broad agreement about im-

proving the visitor experience.

It needs to be easier to get to the mountains and accommodation.

Day-trippers shouldn’t have to be turned away on busy weekends.

We need more snowplay areas so visitors can have a great time in a safe environment.

We need to make it easier for the stream of people walking uphill from the Village Square to Ski School.

We need more visitor facilities in and around the Village Square.

And the mountain needs to be able to accommodate more staff so that we can serve our visitors.

I’m convinced we can progress all these areas by working constructively together.

This will be my focus in the coming weeks and months.

Number of visitors still on the rise WINTER is just flying by and visitor numbers to Mt Buller and Mt Stirling are continuing to rise.

Last weekend Buller had all lifts operating for the first time this season and over week seven almost 30,000 flocked to the mountain for snow fun.

On Monday more snow was predicted which will give Buller a boost to the areas where FIS competition continues this week.

Monday’s report from Buller stated there had been extensive grooming overnight with snow currently firm packed but expected to soften quickly.

And there were 20 lifts turning, making it easy to get across the resort with no troubles at all.

In the meantime visitor numbers for week seven up to July 23 (week eight figures not available as yet) show 29,718 people had taken to the slopes during that week up by some two percent in comparison for the same week the previous year.

Overall visitor numbers for the season are up by seven percent and the trend has continued with visitor day numbers which are also up by six per cent.

On a 10 year average visitor numbers are up by a massive 37 per cent with this season seeing more than 110,200 having fun on the slopes so far.

Mt Stirling numbers have also increased by 66 per cent for week seven and up by 21 per cent on a 10 year average.

Fresh falls make it picture perfect WHITE flakes fell for the majority of last week - on and off over five days bringing white coverings to both Mt Buller and Mt Stirling.

As the snow depth rose so did the number of lifts opening for skiers and visitors - 20 out of 22 is excellent.

With another 9cm of fresh dry snow overnight on Thursday night it made an excellent start for ‘first tracks’ Friday morning.

Skiers and boarders were looking at a very good cover on most open areas.

Ski Patrol recommended Burnt Hut as pick of the day on Friday (but the marketing department was getting excited to take Seven News’ Jane Bunn for a few laps of Bunn Run).

The forecast for this past weekend was also fantastic and visitor numbers were expected to soar -

even better than the record crowds the weekend before when it is believed that more than 1600 cars were parked on the mountain.

The Skyline and Koflers terrain parks were looking stellar in the fresh snow.

On Friday morning mountain folk rose to see snow still falling and the excitement building.

Saturday started off as a spectacular day with sunny conditions

ahead of expected snow falls overnight.

Snow showers were expected to continue from Sunday on and off right through this week.

For those just wanting a ‘snow experience’ there is live entertainment in the Village Square - The D²Drumline are Australia’s Premier marching percussion entertainment and education ensemble performing this Saturday, August 5 from 2pm.

Mt Buller captured in striking exhibition THE drama of clouds lifting through the valley, ice-baked chairlifts twinkling in the morning light, the spray of fresh snow as a skier makes a perfect turn; it is these brief and breathtaking moments in the mountains that we try to capture and hold in our minds.

Tony Harrington (Harro) has spent most of his life doing just that, using a camera, and will share a special collection of these moments in an exhibition titled “Buller & Beyond” showing at Mt Buller’s Alpine Central commencing August 12.

The exhibition pays homage to Mt Buller and locals will revel in a diverse collection of large scale photographic prints showing the mountain in her many moods and from some unique angles.

“The mountain is always changing and there are always new ways to see it,” explains Harro.

“I think that’s what we all love about this place.

“In different light, at a different time of day or from a different viewpoint Mt Buller can often surprise us.

“I hope there is a little something in this exhibition for everyone.”

Harro has been travelling the world creating inspiring photographs for decades with a focus on big mountain action photography and big wave surf photos.

His work is well-known, gracing hundreds of magazine covers and articles.

Last year he decided to spend more time at Mt Buller establishing The Photo Shop and for the first time is opening up his vast photographic collection for sale as fine-art quality prints.

“For most of my life I have been on the road chasing down storms and shoot-

ing for magazines so it’s a new chapter to have time to finally share images with people who can buy one for their wall for the first time,” he said.

As the exhibition title implies, the focus is on Mt Buller however with Harro’s deep love for the ocean and gypsy lifestyle he couldn’t curate a collection without including highlights from

surf destinations and other mountains.

“I am continually pulled between the ocean and the mountains and drawn around the world by storms,” he said.

“I hung a few surf images in my shop last winter along with a handful of my favourite images from Chamonix, Jackson Hole and Alaska and realised how many people connected with those photos, so I

had to weave a few in to this exhibition.

“I’m always being asked ‘where are you going next’ or ‘where have you been’ and there are some photos in this collection that will help answer those questions.”

The photographs in the collection will be mainly large size prints produced as acrylic facemounts – a high-quality and striking style that allows

the prints to glow and appear to float off the wall.

Buller & Beyond will be on display at Alpine Central Mt Buller from August 12-27.

THIS week sees the return of international FIS racing to Mt Buller.

Last Frontier Heli Skiing has announced that it will be the naming rights sponsor of the event which includes two FIS Australia New Zealand Cup (ANC) Skier cross events and two FIS Slalom events.

The Skier cross will be run in a sprint series format and is the ďŹ rst event of its type to be run at Mt Buller and will be held on the newly formed Skier cross course on the Skyline race area.

Little Buller Spur will be the venue of the Slalom and competitors will enjoy the beneďŹ ts of the new start hut and excellent snow as they start of the racing season in Australia at Mt Buller.

Buller Ski Lifts (BSL) in conjunction with Mt Buller Race Club (MBRC) have re-designed the Skier cross course and expect that the competitors and the general public will enjoy the new facility which includes improved rollers, jumps and other fun and challenging features.

The public should be able to get a great view of the event even when

riding the Skyline T Bar or Bull Run chairs.

Both lifts will be operational during the event and free entry will be available to view the event from the many spectator areas around the course.

Events like this take a lot of organisation and would not be possible without the full support of Buller Ski Lifts and the team led by mountain manager Nick Reeves.

As the event organiser, MBRC would like to thank the many people that have helped design, make and shape the course including Mane Blomeier, Katharina Bergman, Bryan Taylor and Dude the kat driver.

Training for the Skier cross and Slalom started on Monday, and racing began Tuesday, August 1st and 2nd for Skier cross and continues August 3rd and 4th for the Slalom.

Events usually start as the lifts open in the morning so get along to see some of Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s emerging talent and current Australian Team members compete over the week.

Slalom skiers will also seek to place their name on the Tom Mathias Memorial trophy and this will be awarded to the overall fastest male and female skier over the two days.

IT was almost 90 years between the ďŹ rst European sighting of Mt Buller and the establishment of clear access up the mountain.

The Aborigines had climbed the mountains now known as Stirling and Mt Buller for thousands of years, but history has no formal recordings of their individual accomplishments.

The Mt Buller peak had been named by the Taungurung people, Marnong, meaning hand.

From a European perspective, the summit peak of Mt Buller was ďŹ rst identiďŹ ed by explorers Hamilton Hume and Captain William Hovell in 1824.

Then in 1836 a surveyor named Thomas Livingston Mitchell led an expedition from NSW into Victoria and again identiďŹ ed Marnong.

It was Mitchell who renamed the peak Mt Buller, after Charles

THE PEAK: At the very peak of Mt Buller stands a summer fire watch tower and shelter.

Buller, an ofďŹ cial in the Colonial OfďŹ ce in London.

There was a suggestion that Mitchell did this with a knighthood in mind, an honour he lobbied for after the trip.

So a little about Charles Bullerâ&#x20AC;Ś.he was a well-educated Englishman born on August 6, 1806.

He attended Harrow School and later attended Trinity College at Cambridge University.

In 1830 he was elected a member of Britainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s House of Commons, retaining a seat in that Parliament until his death on November 29, 1848.

Buller was a busy man.

He also practised as a barrister and judge, and supported many reform measures, thus being regarded as a popular radical.

On August 18, 1868 Merrijig was ďŹ rst proclaimed as a village.

This was only seven years after

the ďŹ rst land was selected in this newly opened up area following the introduction of the 1860 Land Selection Act. It was at this time that families such as the Lovicks and Purcells ďŹ rst established roots in the area.

And they are still well-entrenched today.

William and Catherine Lovick first set up a hotel on the gold fields in Howqua, before later establishing the Hunt Club Hotel in Merrijig.

Although the exploits of bushrangers in the area drew plenty of attention, and the actions of miners seeking golden fortunes attracted headlines, early settlers gravitated to Mt Buller mainly for grazing opportunities.

From a tourism perspective, it was Frank Klingsporn who ďŹ rst set the path up the mountain.

He approached the MansďŹ eld Council in 1913 to assist with widening the track, a route which ran from the junction of Buller Creek and the Delatite River up to Boggy Creek and Burnt Hut Spur.

Today it is still known as the Klingsporn Bridle Track.

kids about. Kids love snow and so do I. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN ON BULLER?: I have lived here all my life - eight years now.

DO YOU SKI OR SNOWBOARD?: Of course I ski! I board too sometimes and although I usually cruise on Bourke Street with the kids I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mind a slide through the terrain park occasionally. I also love a quick rip down a racecourse.

DO YOU NEED LESSONS OR ARE YOUR SKIING ABILITIES TOP NOTCH?: I should get a few more lessons â&#x20AC;&#x201C; everyone should. Not only because they are FUN but also because you can always keep learning and finding something new.

NAME: Blake the Flake - I was named through a competition when I was â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;bornâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; back in 2009. Plenty of kids entered names but Blake it was and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been Blake the Flake ever since. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know many other snowflakes that are still around and having as much fun as I am after eight years.

WHERE DO YOU LIVE: Mt Buller is home for me.

I wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have it any other way. Sometimes I pop down to Melbourne for special events but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s too busy down there. I prefer being on the mountain. I tend to come out for some fun whenever there are plenty of

The man behind real estate on Buller

By PAM ZIERKMAHONEY THE Adams family association with Mansfield, Mt Buller and Merrijig – including Mark Adams – goes back a long way.

Although Mark was born and went to school in Melbourne from a very young age his love of the high country grew.

In fact it started in 1958 when Mark’s father, Adam Adams built N’everest on Chamois Road at Mt Buller, then going on to build many of the lodges and the Arlberg Hotel.

“My association though started when I was about three years of age and went to littlies ski school – so I have skied Mt Buller almost all my life,” Mark said.

“I then went on to do kids’ squad, race club and although not a real champion just did what you’d expect me to do – but none of that daredevil stuff.

“I had a ski instructor, Harry Morson, who taught me to do vadels – quick sharp turns needed in moguls.”

Adam Adams built the Arlberg Hotel in 1970 and the family ran that hotel to start.

He then went on to build many lodges including some still standing today such as Twin Towers, Summit Lodge, Beehive, Moose, Delatite and Elkhorn just to name a few.

“There were some others that have now been replaced with more modern apartments and lodges,” Mark said.

“Summit Lodge was the first built in 1962 – around in the early days when dad was dealing with the

Forestry Commission who ran the mountain like the Mt Buller Resort Board does today.”

When ‘grown up’ Mark ran the Arlberg and Kooroora which the family owned until 1988 – this was on behalf of the family investment.

From there Mark just naturally progressed into real estate and in 1996 started his sales career in Melbourne and then on Mt Buller.

But that sales career now extends to Merrijig, Alpine Ridge and Sawmill Settlement.

However, Mark is not just a real estate salesman or property developer, he is a family man and has many interests in various communities and charities.

He is one of the early founders of the Mark Adams Ski & Golf Day where monies raised each year go to local Mansfield schools (including the secondary college, Merrijig, Jamieson and Mansfield primary schools and St Mary’s Primary School) to help students get started on their skiing experiences.

Mark is also a sponsorship partner of the Victorian Interschool Snowsports Championships.

He was recently asked to sponsor ‘Wazza’ – Mt Buller’s much loved children’s entertainer who needed a little funding to keep it going for the kids.

He is also a silver sponsor of the Buller Race Club, has been Belle Brockhoff’s (world ski competitor and Olympian) major sponsor for the past 10 years, supports Buller Riders and donates to the scholarship program for up and coming athletes.

As for his family life, he is married to Anna Voinsky,

Just recently he has been joined in his real estate company by one of his sons - hopefully who will carry on the Adams family links to Buller and Mansfield region when eventually Mark decides to retire and take up skiing - though says he is still young at heart and in body so is not going anywhere for a long time.

So although many people know Mark Adams as a top real estate person on Mt Buller and the surrounding district, have a chat to him next time you see him out and about - he is an all round nice guy with a big heart who still loves and finds time for his skiing.

Snow sisters make wishes come true

THE 2017 Annual Snow Sisters Dinner held at the Black Cockatoo Restaurant with an after party at the Birdcage on Thursday, July 13 was a roaring success with mor than 80 women attending a sold out event.

This event has become a sought after dinner selling out in a matter of days which is a testament to what a wonderful women’s community the Snow Sisters has brought together.

This year, funds were raised for Make a Wish Australia which will allow children who have a life threatening illness the opportunity to have their Snow Wish come true.

“Some of these children have never seen the snow and have made a wish in hope that they will receive a snow experience,” said Snow Sister Suzanne Rumble.

“The wish will take place during the 2018 season which will allow a child to have snow under their feet for the first time.

“One child’s wish is to have snow fall on her tongue and all this can now come true because of the amazing support of the women who attended the event along with donations made by those that could not attend.”

The night saw a live auction where ski coaches Hamish Cox and David Speirs were highly sought after as well as photography sessions with Sealey Brandt and an amazing dinner package at the Black Cockatoo Restaurant.

A great range of silent auction items were on offer which guests had the opportunity to bid for.

AUCTIONEER: Mt Buller identity Dave Clark stepped up to the microphone to conduct an auction of goods and services which added to the final amount raised during the evening.

Ms Rumble said none of this would be possible without the incredible support of sponsors who gave fantastic items and their time to assist in making the event a success.

Each lady went home with a gift bag donated by Christine Parks from Giving Brand Co and Carolyn Cresswell from Carman’s.

Ms Rumble said Snow Sisters was formed a number of years ago to encourage Mt Buller women to come together, meet new friends and help build a strong network in the community.

Snow Sisters also look forward to seeing the next generation joining in and enjoying the same close bond of friendship,” she said.

All ages are welcome each year and due to a sell out event this year the Snow Sisters committee being Suzanne Rumble, Sonia Evans and Sandra Maier - are going to work towards ensuring everyone can get a ticket.

! &5..9 STORY WAS OVERheard the other day by one of Mt "ULLER .EWS JOURNALISTS Two ladies were chatting, describing their trip to Mt Buller â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a visit they had not had done in many, many years but thought it would be good for a change.

After driving all the way up and parking at Horse Hill they then discovered the free shuttles from near Celiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s to the village.

This was all ďŹ ne with them and they set off to have a grand time.

But as there was snow all around they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t fancy walking all around the village so enquired about the free village shuttle service â&#x20AC;&#x201C; good thinking ladies.

They were told there were three different routes â&#x20AC;&#x201C; red, yellow and blue. h2ED WAS FOR THE 3KI 3CHOOL loop which took you past Breathtaker All Suite Hotel and Pension

Grimus, to the ABOM Express Chairlift and if they wanted they could go to the Ski and Snowboard school,â&#x20AC;? the friendly staff at MMBL told them.

They duly boarded the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;redâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; shuttle at the village bus stop area NEXT TO +OOROORA AND ENJOYED the whole loop seeing how the community of Buller had grown â&#x20AC;&#x201C; quite amazing they said.

When they got back to the village bus stop, and as they were about to get off the shuttle, they asked the driver where would they catch the yellow shuttle and how long would they have to wait? +INDLY THE DRIVER SAID n @STAY on board â&#x20AC;&#x201C; thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s my next routeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which the ladies did.

The ladies by this time were having a great day out â&#x20AC;&#x201C; seeing the sights of Mt Buller and not getting cold, wet or even particularly hungry. $URING THEIR 3UMMIT 2OAD loop - the blue bus route - they travelled past Alpine Central, Mt Buller Chalet, ABOM Hotel and then ďŹ nishes at the Arlberg Hotel

- the highest point on the mountain that you can drive to in a vehicle, they were quite chuffed.

At the conclusion of their village tours they thanked the driver for his hospitality and embarked on the next part of their little tour. $ECIDING TO HAVE A HOT COFFEE they headed for the Cattlemanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s where they were able to watch people going by and queues at Blue Bullet Express, the range of skiers that boarded â&#x20AC;&#x201C; all in the comfort and warmth of a lovely cafĂŠ.

Spending a couple of hours touring the mountain â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and in complete awe of the changes that had occurred since their last visit many years ago - they then boarded the free shuttle back TO THEIR CAR TRAVELLED DOWN TO MansďŹ eld where they bragged to their friends about their marvellous day out on Mt Buller which hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t cost them a great deal and they were very, very happy.

Snow camping under the Milky Way TEAM Buller Riders’ (TBR) program numbers are very strong this year (up on last year), with plenty of leading events from us again this winter (ABOM Mogul Challenge, jNats, Slopestyle etc..).

One special new initiative TBR has just completed is back country training sessions - held over the past two weeks with experienced backcountry skier and guide Teddy Laycock.

This is TBR’s second year running this program, but this year to build on last season, TBR added in a backcountry camping experience.

Five kids and four coaches camped out for the night and learnt the whole backcountry process, setting up the tent, cooking in the snow, location choice, using skins to ski tour etc..

A group of five TBR athletes, three coaches and backcountry guru Teddy Laycock were heading into Buller’s backcountry to experience a night in the wilderness.

The day of departure couldn’t have been better - blue skies, soft snow, and the temperature just on zero.

We dropped the gear near our camp spot in the morning, praying the skies would stay clear.

After lunch, we grabbed our skis and headed up BB1 to ski the untracked Standard run.

With packs on our backs, we got first tracks down Standard, and skied down the Bull Run cat track towards Federation lift.

We reached the bottom of Federation, put our skins on, took a quick photo and we were off.

We skinned for around an hour, taking in the incredibly beautiful scenery of the bushfire burnt snow

LAST Wesdnesday night Buller Ski Lifts (BSL) staff held a Christmas in July party at the ABOM traditionally known to staff as ‘2can’.

I feel truly blessed to have been brought up around such a truly beautiful place, and I was so glad I could see it from a new perspective.

We watched the sun go down over Wombat Chair, took photos, and bathed in the majestic Buller landscape.

As night fell, the skies stayed clear, meaning it would get cold.

So, all rugged up, Teddy cooked us dinner as the stars came out.

That night, the clear sky brought with it the Milky Way, and it was perfect for photos, taking long exposures for spectacular results.

Morning came, and with it the wind.

We had planned to hike to the top

of Little Buller for sunrise and breaky, but the wind would have ruined it, so we stayed in our protected camp and watched the sun come up behind the south face of the mountain.

We packed our packs and skied down to Wombat lift where we would finish our epic experience among the wilderness.

I, along with everyone else who went, left the campout with one thing to take back: an urge to go again.

I would like to thank the three TBR coaches (Alex and Henry Eisner and James Phillips), TBR program manager Andrew Pattison, Backcountry expert and photographer Teddy Laycock, and the Mt Buller Outdoor Operations Team for making this happen.

Blampied, said the evening was always called 2can as two cans of beer were given to each staff member as a thankyou for looking after visitors, especially during the first

school holiday period when numbers grew.

“It is a way of recongising the hard work and contribution staff put into looking after visitors,” he said.

At the dinner, awards were also given to valued eployees.
