Buller to open snow season for the Queen

MT BULLER will launch into winter 2019 with a burst of ďŹ reworks on the Queen’s Birthday weekend June 8-10.

There will be live entertainment with Jazmin Varlet on the village stage, kids’ entertainers, face painting, hot chocolate, toasted marshmallows and more.

Of course, Mt Buller is already off to an exciting start with the unveiling of the new $6m chairlift to take skiers and boarders up Bourke Street for the opening day of

the snow season.

Mt Buller is promising skiers and boarders snow to start the season thanks to the Snowfactory, which is able to make snow at any temperature to build the snow base and ensure guests can enjoy a slide on opening weekend.

Opening weekend schedule: SATURDAY, JUNE 8: 3.30pm – 5.30pm: Free family activities in the Mt Buller Village Square. Keep the kids busy with balloon twisting, face painting and more.

3.30pm–7pm: Winter Warmers in the Mt Buller Village Square. Enjoy complimentary gluhwein, hot chocolate, toasted marshmallows and roasted chestnuts around the village ďŹ re pits.

THE 2019 snow season will give visitors faster access to Bourke Street skiing, more snow play fun, easier access to the village on busy weekends and celebrations for 70 years of ‘lifting’.

Getting people to the top of ski runs began in 1949 with a single tow on what became Bourke Street.

This winter Mt Buller leads the way with another new $6m chairlift.

The gleaming six-seater Bourke Street Express will whisk skiers up Bourke Street in just over two minutes.

The new lift has fewer towers than the old Blue Bullet, which frees up even more ski area for smooth sweeping turns down to the village centre.

Mt Buller now has the largest and most modern lift network in Victoria with 22 lifts able to move 40,000 people an hour.

Topping up the snow in areas such as snow play parks and learner areas will be the mini SnowFactory – a mobile unit which will give more snow where it is needed for bigger and better snowballs,

The mini SnowFactory adds to an already massive and impressive snowmaking system including the SF220 SnowFactory and the 269 snowguns across the resort.

Wood Run, Grimus and Standard Run are next in line

to get a snowmaking boost.

A new platter lift also replaces the old Canyon Rope Tow this winter.

This new lift will make the link from Chamois to Standard so much smoother and has the option to put the platter between your legs, as a side handle or up against your back as it pulls you along.

A great new service also rolls out for peak weekends in July and August this winter - day visitors can save money and skip the worry of wheel chains and driving in the snow by parking at the new Mirimbah parking bays and taking the free shuttle up to the village.

It’s a serious saving at just $36.80 per car when booked online ahead of time.

And to top off all this good news is the announcement that Mt Buller will double its snowmaking water capacity with construction of a 100 megalitre dam expected to start in October.

A $10m investment promises more water for the village supply and snowmaking, and paves the way for future snowmaking expansion.

New and bold for Buller this season THERE is always something new happening on Mt Buller and on the social scene it is no different.

This winter sees the start of construction of the new Hoo Hah and Kooroora complex.

Mt Buller Village has been buzzing with construction over the past summer.

The famous grey pub, rumoured to have been held up by layers of paint and zip ties, has made way for a stylish version including a new retail and rental precinct.

However, the legend of the well-loved Kooroora lives on in this new venue that celebrates the rich history of the legendary Hoo Hah, but will smell a lot better.

A downstairs nightclub is the place to party until That’s Amore plays at 3am.

DWA gets everyone on the mountain DISABLED Wintersport Australia enters its sixth season up at Mt Buller this year, delivering program support through volunteer guides, specialised equipment rental and assistance in private ski lessons for all people with physical and cognitive disabilities.

Established in 1978, Disabled Wintersports Australia (DWA) is the National Sporting Organisation (NSO) body responsible for Adaptive Winter Sport in Australia.

DWA says their mission is “To promote and foster the advancement of participation by people with a disability in winter sport both in Australia and overseas”, and to make sure “The equality of opportunity for people with disabilities to participate at all levels in the winter sport of their choice”.

The program was officially launched at Mt Buller in 2014 with the support of Buller Ski

Lifts (BSL) and the Resort Management Board (RMB).

DWA is now established at the resort to support all visitors with a disability.

Through sponsorship with Martins Garage in Mansfield and the support of other onmountain services, they are able to deliver a successful program to members and participants.

Jane Diplock and Chris Alty are the resort services coordinators up at Buller and help to deliver the DWA program to Mansfield locals, Buller residents and anyone else who requires additional assistance to get on snow.

The services DWA is able to provide at Buller are volunteer guide program where trained guides assist individuals with a disability to ski or snowboard, specialist adaptive equipment hire and additional support during ski school lessons.

The resort services coordinators are also on hand to provide information about access around Buller to make an adaptive adventure as enjoyable as possible.

The volunteer guiding program is on offer to any intermediate-to-advanced skiers and snowboarders who have some free time and want to help provide assistance to any person with a disability.

Volunteers are all trained in guiding and provided with all the education to confidently provide assistance to a participant.

You don’t require experience working with people with disabilities in order to come out to training sessions.

SKIING as a sport was started in Victoria by the Ski Club of Victoria (SCV) in the early 1920s when enthusiasts set out across the Bogong High Plains and other peaks in search of snowfields that had the potential for crosscountry and downhill skiing.

Old cattlemen’s huts originally established by mining prospectors in the 1800s were often used for refuge and overnight stops.

It was in 1926 when the Mansfield Progress Association established the Tourist Hut, helping with the supply of a suitable accommodation centre.

But Tom Mitchell’s entry into state parliament in 1947 really set the alpine village ball rolling at a time when skiing was in the grip of a post-war explosion and when Victoria’s snowfields, although barely accessible, were desperately short of accommodation.

Early in 1947 the Victorian ski population of 3000-5000 had only 200 beds, including those in the primitive cattlemen’s huts, at their disposal.

To alleviate the shelter problem and to develop the sport, Tom Mitchell proposed that alpine villages be established in Victoria.

objected to this proposal, Tom pressed the issue regardless and with the support of his parliamentary colleagues, success was his – Buller and Hotham came into existence as snow resorts.

The SCV, as state controlling body, did its best to find and create shelters but was severely handicapped by limited funds, labour and material shortages, poor access and government legislation.

Ski resorts were developed by private enterprises under the direction of the controlling government department and the supervising resort committee of management.

By the mid-1980s, management of the resorts progressively passed over to the Alpine Resorts Commission.

Moves to develop Mt Buller as a tourist attraction were initiated in 1913 by Frank Klingsporn who sought the assistance of the Mansfield council in cutting a well formed track to the Mt Buller summit.

cost, the council gave £25 and £40 came from the state.

Ten years later the skiing potential of the mountain was first recognised and by 1925 the track was reworked to the mountain base, and a bridle track to the Boggy Creek tourist hut was cut by the Klingsporn brothers and the Mansfield Progress Association.

The CRB road access into the old Buller Chalet came in 1939 and, together with the chalet’s accommodation, was the start of the village.

Post-war, the SCV extended that road up to Cow Camp to facilitate transport of supplies during the ‘Whitt’ construction – the real village beginning.

By the end of 1947 the old chalet had gone, the focal point of activity had

moved up to the hill and Buller accommodation totalled 72 beds spread between Cow Camp Hut (4), the long standing SCV Hut (12) at Boggy Creek, the SCV’s ‘Whitt’ (36) and the CSIR Club cabin (20) built at Skating Rink in August 1946.

The committee of management was formed in 1948 and by 1953 Buller already had 26 club lodges, the ‘Whit’ and the new Kooroora Motel.

At the end of the initial building boom around 1960, the lodge count neared 80, the section between Stirling Track and Cow Camp had been opened and just on 150 sites had been surveyed by the Forests Commission and either allocated or available for allotment.

The pudding people Michele Morrice looks back on her life on Mt Buller and in Mansfield Ű

in tow and one on the way, the Morrice family decided they wanted a country life – so they sold everything and took the plunge.

“It was a big deal at the time, and a bit of a risk for us,” Michele said.

“That was in 1984.”

In 1985 they opened Stephen’s – the current site of Café 41 – a small café and delicatessen.

“We got busy quickly, so we actually purchased the shop next door and knocked through – the premises is one of the biggest along the street, even today,” Michele said.

At the same time, they began producing puddings under the Stephen’s Fine Foods label.

“The puddings took off quicker than we expected – we had catered for a wedding, and the bride actually worked at David Jones so we were able to get them a pudding sample,” Michele said.

Within 24 hours, Stephen’s Fine Foods was supplying one of the most exclusive retail chains in the Australia.

“That was a big turning point for us,” Michele said.

“In the end, we had to choose between the café and the puddings, because we couldn’t do both.”

The puddings won, and the Morrices sold their retail premises and opened a wholesale kitchen on Howes Creek Road.

At the same time, Michele and Stephen returned to Ajax Lodge each winter – an ideal mix between summer and winter living.

“We have run Ajax for 34 years,” Michele said.

“It’s been our home away from home – the kids all went to the Buller school, and then as they got older brought their friends home to us.

“It’s an 81 bed lodge with full catering, so it’s not an easy job, but we love it.”

In 2004, after selling their property on Howes Creek

Road, the pudding business moved to Ajax as well.

Though they were there for seven years, in hindsight Michele recognises the impracticalities of the arrangement.

“We needed a commercial complex, which we had at Ajax – but the roads and parking on Buller is hard at the best of times,” she said.

“I remember one summer we had to take out a window to get all the fruit into the kitchen, because the pallets wouldn’t fit in the door.”

Going through 7.5 tonnes of fruit a year, it’s no surprise they quickly outgrew the site.

“We finally decided to bite the bullet and build a purpose built factory,” Michele said.

That was in 2011, and Stephen’s Fine Foods is still running from the same location on the Mount Buller Road.

Some things have changed in that time – closing the small on-site café is one – but by far the biggest was the decision to put the business on the market.

“We have eight grandchildren, and none of them are in Mansfield,” Michele said.

“The reality is, we aren’t getting any younger.”

Last year, Michele cracked her femur and was briefly confined to a wheelchair; the lack of family close-by hit home.

“The kids are all at least two hours away, and they came and helped – my sister flew in from Queensland – but there is nothing like being around family, having that support network around you,” she said.

“That’s why it’s time for us to move on.”

Although Michele hopes the future holds a new home in a new town, there is no mistaking the impact the Morrice family have had locally.

FEW people realise the impact Michele and Stephen Morrice have had on the local community.

Quiet achievers, they boast one of the district’s most successful business operations – a true example of starting small and working up.

They spend their winters on Mount Buller and their summers in town – all sparked by a love of fine food and mountain air.

In fact, look skyward next time you visit Mount Buller and on the legends wall you will find Michele, unassuming as ever, but no doubt an important figure in the mountain’s history.

Back in the 70s, Michele met English born Stephen at a party in Melbourne, the pair connecting over jokes and bad red wine.

Waiting to be deployed for Vietnam, Stephen and Michele had just six weeks together – but it was enough.

“He was away for nine months, but we kept in touch,” Michele said.

“I knew from the beginning he was someone I could share my life with.”

Tucked away in a drawer at home, Michele still has those first letters Stephen wrote; of the men he served with and of their imagined future together.

They could hardly know at the time that theirs was a love built to last.

Returning to Australia, Stephen and Michele set about building a life together – heading to Mansfield in 1979 when they were approached to manage Ajax Ski Lodge on Mount Buller.

“We thought, why not?”

Michele said.

Although it would spark a lifetime association with Ajax, the pair returned to Melbourne and bought Le Pied De Cochen, a French charcuterie and patisserie in Malvern.

“We started our lives in the city, because it just seemed to make sense at the time,” Michele said.

“But we tried to get up to Mansfield as often as we could, even back then.”

Sniffer dogs on the trail of stoneflies on Buller VOLUNTEER detection dogs have been trained to ďŹ nd live insects measuring 50 millimetres in length throughout the High Country.

The initiative is an Australian ďŹ rst for an endangered insect species that could revolutionise conservation practices, and has already been successful.

So far, three detection dogs â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a Border collie, black Labrador and a samoyed - have been successfully trained to seek out the endangered and elusive Alpine and Mount Stirling stoneďŹ&#x201A;y at Mount Buller.

Researchers from La Trobe University trained the three dogs to locate the endangered Alpine stoneďŹ&#x201A;y, which is the largest stoneďŹ&#x201A;y in Australia.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also one of the smallest animals a dog has been trained to detect in its natural habitat.

Lead researcher Julia Mynott from La Trobeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Centre for Freshwater Ecosystems in Alburyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Wodonga said that detection dogs are usually trained to sniff out animal nests or faeces, not the animal itself. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is an exciting and innovative way to revolutionise how we gather data on our endan-

gered species, no matter how big or small,â&#x20AC;? Dr Mynott said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In the past, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been restricted to traditional methods of detection when looking for stoneďŹ&#x201A;ies, which include visual surveys and aquatic sampling.â&#x20AC;?

Despite their bright orange and green colouring, Dr Mynott said that Alpine stoneďŹ&#x201A;ies are difďŹ cult to ďŹ nd, especially when theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re in water. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Alpine stoneďŹ&#x201A;y is an aquatic insect that hatches in the streams of the Bogong High Plains, where it lives for up to two years,â&#x20AC;? Dr Mynott said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The larvae often burrow underneath cobbles, debris or boulders, and the adults emerge between January and April to reproduce. â&#x20AC;&#x153;With all these factors in mind, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easy to understand why the traditional detection methods can be time consuming, and for the larvae, fairly ineffective. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Right now, we have no idea of the population size of the species.â&#x20AC;?

The ongoing aim for this research project is to transfer the cusses of the ďŹ rst trial to a similar species â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the Stirling stoneďŹ&#x201A;y â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which is found at Mt Buller and Mt Stirling.
