MT BULLER announced last week that it will host an official Olympic training centre, making Mt Buller Victoria’s home for the development of future Olympic and world champions in aerial and mogul skiing.

Following several months of planning and negotiations, a landmark partnership has been reached between the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia, Ski and Snowboard Australia, Buller Ski Lifts, and the Mt Buller and Mt Stirling Resort Management Board.

The partnership will see Mt Buller athlete training programs recognised by the Australian Olympic Committee as an official Olympic training centre, and the only resort in Australia where Olympic athletes can live on mountain and train both day and night.

Formal contracts will be finalised in the coming months, and the centre is expected to be up and running in time for winter 2018.

It will include onmountain accommodation for 20 athletes, an indoor acrobatic facility, upgraded aerials site, dedicated moguls course, additional snow making, and lights so athletes can train into the night.

Olympic Winter Institute of Australia chair Geoffrey Henke said: “Winter sports have had remarkable success over the past decade, and now sit only behind swimming and sailing on current Olympic sport high performance rankings.

“We are delighted to announce this partnership

with Mt Buller to help more Australians reach the pinnacle of winter sport success for years to come.”

Ski and Snowboard Australia chair Dean Gosper said: “Mt Buller has always been an important partner for our sport and in particular aerial skiing.

“We are delighted to partner with the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia and Mt Buller to extend their athlete training programs.

“We also welcome the long term vision of Mt Buller in supporting winter sport and are pleased to be extending the rights to host the Victorian Interschools at Mt Buller.”

“Buller Ski Lifts has been a partner of the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia since its inception in 1997, and we are very proud of the success that our winter athletes have enjoyed in the past and look forward to sharing the future successes that this new partnership will enable.”

Buller Ski Lifts general manager Laurie Blampied added: “As part of this historic agreement, Buller Ski Lifts will be upgrading the snowmaking facilities on the Chamois Run and installing lights so that athletes can train day and night.

“We’re also extending our arrangement to keep the tremendously successful Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships at Mt Buller for at least another five years.”

WELCOME to the last of Buller News’ regular catch ups for the season with the Mt Buller and Mt Stirling chief executive officer, Mark Bennetts.

Buller News (BN): The 60th Victorian Interschools have now finished. What were your observations?

Mark Bennetts (MB): Well it really was a fabulous event.

It was great to see the excitement among the skiers during the medal presentations each night, especially the younger kids who were competing for the first or second times.

And some of the older racers are perhaps on the cusp of joining the band of Mt Buller Olympic skiers.

The BSL staff who prepared and set the courses did a great job.

David Spiers and his team pulled everything together wonderfully well, and he was quite hoarse by the end of the week.

It turns out that the Federal Minister for Sport, Greg Hunt, is a long time Mt Buller skier, and he dropped in to present some medals and officially close the event.

And of course Lydia Lassila was a favourite at the opening ceremony, with many young skiers keen to have their picture taken with her.

BN: Lydia also announced the Olympic training centre. How did that come about?

MB: I think it’s a great example of collaboration for the benefit of the mountains, our skiers and our visitors.

The Olympic Winter Institute of Australia (OWIA), Ski and Snowboard Australia, Buller Ski Lifts and the Resort Management Board are all contributing to make Mt Buller Victoria’s home for the development of future Olympic and world champions in aerial

The RMB is making Alpine House available for athlete accommodation, which the OWIA will renovate internally and externally.

We’re also making half a court in the Sports Hall available for the OWIA to install an acrobatic facility, which will be available for the public to use when it is not being used for training.

And BSL will be making improvements to Chamois including a FIS dual moguls course, lights and additional snowmaking equipment – we just need more water.

BN: We keep coming back to water. What is the latest with the planning application for the new dam?

MB: We have submitted our Environmental Effects Statement Referral for consideration by the Department of Planning.

It seeks comment from other Victorian government departments before advising the next steps in the application process, which they will advise during September.

We also need separate approval from the Federal Government.

We’ve submitted all of the materials for that application too, and are hopeful of a positive outcome.

BN: What else is the RMB progressing at the moment?

MB: The marketing team is working on the mountain’s spring campaign, which focuses on the message of great skiing and

plenty of fun events right through until the celebratory closing weekend on the grand final long weekend, wrapping up on Sunday, October 1.

We’re organising a broad group of stakeholders to help us review parking, bus, shuttle, taxi and pedestrian arrangements and agree what to do to improve the visitor experience, safety, and increase car parking capacity in time for winter 2018.

We’re progressively working through updating or creating internal policies to improve our governance practices as a result of the Ombudsman’s report.

And we’re working on a way of removing the subjectivity inherent in the Alpine Resorts Leasing Policy guidelines, so that everyone can understand how lease terms are determined.

BN: So while all that’s going on, what’s coming up for summer?

MB: The team is already preparing for another summer full of events and activities, kicking off with the Targa High Country motor racing event on November 10-12.

Following Targa, our official summer season opening weekend will be on December 2 and 3, where visitors will be able to enjoy the huge network of mountain biking, walking and running trails that the resort has to offer in summer.

Visitors will be able to enjoy a comprehensive range of events, including the Buller Mountain Bike Festival and Victorian Downhill Series, running events like the Mt Buller Sky Run and Oscar’s 100 Hut2Hut, the everpopular Picnic in the Park food, wine and music festival, Easter celebrations and more.

We are looking forward to welcoming back many of our winter guests to enjoy all the mountain has to offer in the ‘green season’.

Mt Buller celebrates 60 years of Victorian Interschools THE 2017 Subaru Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships got under way for the 60th time at Mt Buller last week with thousands of skiers and snowboarders relishing a week of competition in excellent snow conditions.

Olympic gold and bronze medallist aerial skier Lydia Lassila welcomed the competitors at the opening celebrations and is also training at Mt Buller.

The Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships were first staged in 1958 at Mt Buller between just two schools - Melbourne Grammar School and Scotch College.

Since then the Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships have grown to become one of the premier school sporting competitions in Victoria spawning world champions and Olympians such as Alex ‘Chumpy” Pullin, Anton Grimus, Scotty James, Belle Brockhoff and more.

The crew will be hitting the slopes over the next two weekends - come and join them.

Event manager David Speirs added: “The Subaru Victorian Interschools is all about getting young people involved in snowsports and helping them develop a lifelong passion for the sport.

“The Mt Buller community welcomes 190 schools from all across the state for this event which brings together students, families and schools in this beautiful alpine setting for a fantastic week of fun, competition and camaraderie.”

The inaugural 1958 ‘Interschools’ had just eight competitors, four boys from Melbourne Grammar School and four boys from Scotch College and there was one grand slalom alpine race.

This year more than 2500 competitors raced for a full seven days to cover all races and all divisions across nine disciplines - Alpine Giant Slalom, Snowboard Giant Slalom, Snowboard Cross, Ski Cross, Moguls, Cross Country Classical, Cross Country Freestyle Relay, Slopestyle Ski and Slopestyle Snowboard.

Multiclass shows style and speed THE Multiclass Championships have been part of the Victorian Interschools for the past five years.

School aged students with a physical or intellectual impairment have an opportunity to participate in the event.

Fourteen students from Rossbourne School, Ashwood, Currajong, and St Michaels took part in races on August 23 at Burnt Hut. A snowsports pathway now exists for school leavers via Special Olympics and this year 11 athletes participated in the Victorian Championships at Burnt Hut also.

The Multiclass Sports Association co-ordinate the event as part of the Interschools to give athletes with a disability the opportunity to participate in competitive sporting activities and celebrate their achievements, thus enhancing their health, wellbeing, community inclusion and self-esteem through organised sport.

The aims of the event are to: promote acceptance and foster understanding and respect within the wider community by incorporating the Multiclass Snowsports event through inclusion as part of the main-

stream Interschools event; develop a greater sense of opportunity and inclusion for all within the Alpine community through a common love of skiing/boarding and achieve respect and recognition from their peers and the wider community; provide an opportunity for students with special needs to demonstrate courage and compete safely and confidently against their peers in a race environment.

The event has a number of activities that work to meet the objectives outlined above including: 1. Safety Briefing at Ski Patrol.

2. Welcome Meeting at the Village Square.

3. Complementary Gear Hire provided by Black Mountain.

4. Opening Ceremony & Pizza at Uncle Pats.

5. Race Preparation Clinic – 2 days conducted by Disabled Wintersports Australia (DWA).

6. Event Dinner at the Ski Club of Victoria (this year 78 people attended where race bibs were presented to the 25 competitors).

7. Race Day assisted by DWA. 8. Medal Presentation.

THIS year’s Freebom on Mount Buller was a big success, not surprising when the ingredients were 40cm of fresh snow, awesome natural bumps, unbridled enthusiasm and a bunch of very talented skiers.

Grassroots community ski events are few and far between these days and that’s what makes Freebom such a fun event and for many, the highlight of the season.

Held at Woodrun on Buller, Freebom embodies everything that is good about skiing – fun, freedom, energy, snow and the mountain.

The first Freebom was held four years ago when myself and a crew from Team Buller Riders turned up at the bottom of Wood Run, Buller’s spiritual home of mogul skiing, with a PA system, some refreshments and the idea to have fun.

The event hasn’t changed much since then with no set fenced-off course, no specific rules and no particular style of skiing being rewarded.

Freebom is a judged event but as the name suggests, the judging is not limited to some set criteria which focuses on hand positions, turning

technique or speed.

No, the Freebom judging criteria is about overall impression, who is ripping and who’s having the most fun.

Well, that’s the criteria I was judging by and there were a lot of skiers of all ages who pushed that criteria to the limit.

Christian Sirianni’s massively high Cossacks, Johnny Lapser’s back flips, Jock Gunn’s switch skiing on teles and Mitch Reeves’ high speed GS turns through the bumps are just a few of the things that stood out.

“This is what it used to be like,” said TBR legend Chris Schwarz, referring to the heady days of the early ‘90s.

In the end we saw the return of the prodigal son with Buller legend Christian Sirianni taking out the prestigious Spiritual Leader award, winning a pair of Dalbello boots and a custom boot fitting from the Boot Lab. Freebom brings the Buller community out in force and it’s a day that Buller’s skiing soul shines through, a bunch of like-minded people celebrating skiing, its culture and, of course, their mountain.

Andrew Pattison, TBR program manager, summed it up nicely: “It was a fitting celebration of all that is great

about Mt Buller.”

I think he’s right and Freebom is the kind of event every mountain in Australia should have.

Rip Curl GromSearch series hits Mt Buller

SEIZING on the excellent snow conditions at Mt Buller, Rip Curl is bringing its popular GromSearch format to the mountain this Sunday, September 3.

Skiers and boarders under 17 are invited to join the event and shred the mountain with good friends and a few wellknown faces from the Rip Curl snow team exploring Mt Buller’s massive 300 hectares of terrain in a freestyle ‘expression session’ format.

“The GromSearch snow sessions are just awesome,” professional Rip Curl snowboarder Nate Johnstone said.

“We find a few good zones to hit and then unleash the groms and see what they come up with.

“It’s all about having fun, getting creative and seeing the talent in our group.

“There’s a bunch of prizes to spice things up and everyone has a sick day on the mountain.”

Legendary photographer Tony “Harro” Harrington will be rolling with the GromSearch crew and shooting all the action at each stop around the mountain so each participant will go home with a professional shot to remember the day.

“I am basically a big grom myself,” Harro said.

“This is set to be such a fun day ripping around together and having fun.

“I love shooting great action and I know these kids will be getting creative and most importantly just having the best day – which makes for great photos.”

Organisers and Rip Curl team riders will keep an eye on the participants, offer advice and award prizes ‘on the spot’ for notable performances.

Everyone who registers will receive a Rip Curl gift, plus a social media photo of their choice shot by Harro.

The GromSearch snow

session is based on an ‘Expression Session’ format where participants do laps of a designated area and throw down whatever they feel like in the allotted time.

Rip Curl athletes and select mountain crew will select notable performances throughout each timeslot and give prizes for performances who catch their eye.

They might do something rad or are just generally ripping and having the most fun.

The event is open to male and female athletes, skiers and snowboarders are welcome.

Age divisions are 12 and under, 14 and under and 16 and under.

Meet at the Rip Curl shop in the Mt Buller Village at 9.30am - and it finishes back at the shop at 12.30pm.

Shred in a dress

ON Sunday, September 3 over 200 snowboarders and skiers will descend on Mount Buller for Shred It In A Dress, and spend the day hitting the slopes in support of One Girl – a Melbourne based not-forprofit with the mission of educating one million girls across the developing world.

If 200 snowboarders getting together to support a charity weren’t enough, these shredders will be doing all of it in a dress.

You read that right, the snowboarders are taking part in One Girl’s Do It in a Dress campaign where ordinary Australians choose a challenge and chuck on a school dress to raise money to send girls back to school.

Aiming to raise over $10,000 to support girls’ education in Sierra Leone and Uganda, the Mt Buller community has rallied to support the cause with food specials, an after party including a DJ, and night skiing open from 5pm.

MORE than 2500 students packed the slopes of Mt Buller recently to compete in the Victorian Interschools competitions.

Although not all could come out champions competition was friendly and fierce in most disciplines.

Just a few of the results are as follows, but as far as local skiers and snowboarders are concerned many were very pleased with their efforts.

Local street skateboarder and now accomplished 15 year old Hayley Wilson won her Div 2 Snowboard Slopestyle with a massive point score of 91.33 ahead of fellow Mansfield student Lily Bennet who took out second with 50.66.

In the boys Div 3 snowboard slopestyle Wilson Cooper came in at 7th place while in the boys ski slopestyle Edward Mahoney and Mac Cooper did well coming in second and eighth respectively.

Daniel Walker placed third in the boys Div 1 Ski cross, while in the team event Daniel Walker and Ned Angliss placed 5th overall.

had to modify it to run on power kerosene as they couldn’t obtain petrol.

A major challenge was finding appropriate rope that could be used.

A local rope manufacturer called Kinnears essentially supplied the product as the group was unable to import rope from Europe.

Bourke Street was an already established ski run.

It was decided to run the rope tow from Helicopter Flat up the

southern side of Bourke Street.

Permission was sought and granted from the Forests Commission to cut a trail up the southern side of Bourke Street thus separating the tow from skiers.

The project was worked on for 23 consecutive weekends leading to the opening at the start of July.

Many problems plagued the operation of the rope tow - including overheating, failed bearings, rope tension and rope splicing.

Operating the tow also remained a challenge and inevitably people with an engineering background gravitated to the role.

John Hilton-Wood had been part of the original construction team and had supplied the differential from a troop carrier to help run it.

As John put it, “I ran that lift in 1950 because I was the only one on the mountain who could splice the rope.”

It was Ernest Forras who encouraged Hilton-Wood to build Mt Buller’s second lift, another rope tow that ran down Bull Run through the Funnel in the centre of the bowl.

Such were the times that a permit for the Bull Run tow was requested after its construction.

It was 1953 and bureaucracy was somewhat simpler.

And in 1954 Hilton-Wood extended the tow to the bottom of Bull Run. Riding these first two tows was a tricky challenge, especially Bull Run with its particularly steep pitch.

THE very first day of ski lift operation on Mt Buller was July 3, 1949.

The development of this first tow came about as a result of a discussion at the annual general meeting of the Ski Club of Victoria in 1948.

One of the club’s active members Rob Summers asked members if they would be interested in a tow at Mt Buller and he subsequently formed a committee and took on the project.

Other than SCV members, the other major contributors to this first tow were the members of the Brighton Mountain Wanderers (BMW) Ski Club.

1500 students from 250 schools from across Australia will participate in the Nationals.

THE elite third-and-a-half annual Pond Skim National Championships at Mt Buller.

Despite being recognised as the National Championships, you don’t actually need to follow an athlete pathway from your local pond skimming club, through the state league, to reach national glory.

Just register online and give it a crack (talent scouts are proposed for 2018+).

Since 2016 didn’t happen due to lack of snow - new scoring for 2017 sees costume points doubled (to 50 per cent of total score).

Plus we’re giving prizes to 5th posi.

All competitors MUST sign a waiver and get a wristband at the Saleyards Ticket Office between 9am to 11am on the morning of the event.

Visitor figures continue to rise MT BULLER and Mt Stirling have both experienced bumper numbers this season with Stirling recording a 173 per cent rise in visitors.

Mt Buller has experienced a 21 per cent rise in comparison for the same week (Week 11 stats) from last year.

Some 31,569 people visited the resort in the week, a rise of more than 5000 from the previous year.

And Mt Stirling had an additional 600 people on its slopes.

Overall the year to date figures are four per cent over and above last year’s figures for Buller but for Stirling the year to date figures are down despite good snow falls.

On a 10 year average Stirling is still up 20 per cent and Buller is up by almost one third – 29 per cent.

Visitor days have followed the current trend of increasing also with Buller being up by some nine per cent and Stirling up by 29 per cent on a 10 year average.

Year to date figures for Stirling for visitor days are 6491 and Buller 387,888 – almost reaching the half million mark for Buller.

With almost one month to go it is expected that Mt Buller might just make the 500,000 mark for the season – showing that skiing and the ‘snow experience’ are still favourite winter pastimes for many.

World photographer brings visitors home

By SEALY BRANDT ON my last trip to Singapore in June (just before moving to Mt Buller for this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s winter season) I had this wonderful family come to my studio to discuss me photographing them.

After deciding to go ahead with the shoot the mother Wendy (who was pregnant with her third child) asked if I would please return to Singapore before the end of September to photograph them.

After explaining that I was heading to Mt Buller for the season photographing families and exhibiting my work, I

suggested they come to the snow for their shoot.

On second breath and I excitedly threw around some ideas of how I could photograph them in the snow and what a golden opportunity to leave a beautiful legacy behind of incredible images in the snow.

I saw the sparkle in Wendyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eyes and thought to myselfâ&#x20AC;Ś..â&#x20AC;&#x2122;I have a feeling they will do itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

Sure enough Wendy emailed me to say they would love to come to Mt Buller.

They arrived three weeks later.

Thankfully it snowed a few days before.

Mt Buller was at its best.

We discussed ideas and decided that an adventure with the Huskies was what we wanted.

The results speak for themselves.

What a memory, what a legacy.

Well done Wendy.

Like all of my other families I photograph I shot black and white film and all prints will be printed by hand in the dark room creating exhibition quality silver gelatine prints which will last generations to come.

MT BULLER will again host the exhilarating Winter Adventure Race event on Saturday, September 16.

The Mt Buller Adventure Race is an exciting single day event that sees competitors navigate to nine different checkpoints across the Mt Buller snow ďŹ elds.

Not only do contestants need to plan the best route for the fastest time, the course will see them battling up snowy mountain trails, traversing rugged stretches of alpine terrain, and descending snow-covered tracks to reach the ďŹ nish line.

The course can be completed on skis, snowboard, snowshoes,

skins, alpine touring or split board equipment with several race categories for participants to enter, making it ideal for all alpine enthusiasts.
