Childhood ear infections THIS is the time of year when young children are likely to develop middle ear ųŶŧĪřĵşź͂ ĝŠı͂ ĝŠ͂ ĝīīŧşųĝŠƠʼnŠŁ͂ DZ͂ƅīƁƅĝƁ̘ ing hearing loss. ĝŶ͂ʼnŠŀĵīƁʼnŧŠźˮ͂şŧŶĵ͂ųŶŧųĵŶřƠ͂īĝřřĵı͂ŧƁʼn̘ tis media, are the most common reason that young children visit their local doctor. [ŧşĵƁʼnşĵź͂ ĝŠƁʼnĪʼnŧƁʼnīź͂ şʼnŁņƁ͂ Īĵ͂ ųŶĵ̘ scribed for your child, but this is less likely if a viral infection is suspected.

Why might young children have more ear infections than older children and adults?

There are a few reasons. ņʼnřıŶĵŠ͂ĝŶĵ͂şŧŶĵ͂řʼnŗĵřƠ͂Ɓŧ͂ıĵƙĵřŧų͂īŧŠ̘ gestion with head colds and other illnesses, causing some swelling of nasal passages. bņʼnź͂ şĝŗĵź͂ ʼnƁ͂ şŧŶĵ͂ ıʼnǦ ͂​͂īƅřƁ͂ ŀŧŶ͂ Ɓņĵ͂ ĵĝŶ͂ to pop normally, which allows fresh air into the middle ear.

The Eustachian tube, which pops to equalise pressure, is horizontal rather than on a slight angle as in adults.

Finally, a young child’s immune system gradually becomes better “educated” as it is exposed to a variety of illnesses and by the time a child is six to eight years old, they are generally less likely to experience problems with otitis media.

When a child has needed antibiotics for otitis media, it can take one to three months for most ears to get fully back to ŠŧŶşĝř͂ ĪƠ͂ ŶĵźŧřƙʼnŠŁ͂ Ɓņĵ͂ şʼnııřĵ͂ ĵĝŶ͂ DZ͂ƅʼnı͂ (mucous).

Of course, if there is another infection in the meantime, this can become quite a cycle.

If your child is in the group of one in six īņʼnřıŶĵŠ͂ ƚņŧ͂ ĵƟųĵŶʼnĵŠīĵ͂ ŶĵīƅŶŶʼnŠŁ͂ şʼnı̘

dle ear problems, you might have noticed źŧşĵ͂DZ͂ƅīƁƅĝƁʼnŧŠź͂ʼnŠ͂ƁņĵʼnŶ͂ņĵĝŶʼnŠŁ˳ bņʼnź͂DZ͂ƅīƁƅĝƁʼnŧŠ͂īĝŠ͂īŧŠƁŶʼnĪƅƁĵ͂Ɓŧ͂źųĵĵīņ͂ and language delay, as they may not be hearing the same consistent message that you say day in, day out (like ‘Here is your nose, where are your toes?’ in the bathtub).

There is likely to be a group of children in every primary school who have middle ear problems. [ŧşĵ͂ŧŀ͂Ɓņĵźĵ͂şĝƠ͂ĝřŶĵĝıƠ͂ņĝƙĵ͂ĪĵĵŠ͂ƅŠ̘ der the care of the local audiologist or even the Ear, Nose and Throat specialist, but not always.

The teacher may need to ensure that these students are seated a little closer to their normal teaching position or be aware of whether they can hear other students well during class discussion.

Around home, sometimes these children do not answer from a distance and might need extra volume on the TV. Make sure they are safe when crossing the road, using their eyes, as they might not hear a car as well as you.

Too much of a good thing is not a good thing IN the developed world, we’ve come a long way since the start of the industrial revolution in the late 18th century.

Holistic hub in the heart of Bright COLLABORATION and being able to ‘pivot’ have been keywords for businesses over the last 18 months and four businesswomen have created a complimentary yet diverse holistic approach to health in a single location.

Erin Reid, director of Alpine Natural Health, said that the idea to work collaboratively with other likeminded health professionals was always her vision for the space. ̢,͂ƚĝŠƁĵı͂ Ɓŧ͂ ŧǥ͂ĵŶ͂ ĝřƁĵŶŠĝƁʼnƙĵ͂ ņĵĝřƁņ͂ īĝŶĵ͂ which encompassed mind, body and spirit,” she said.

“I had worked with Anne (Heuperman) from Mountain Pilates previously and I liked the way she was so attentive to the spiritual side of things in her workshops.

“Kylie (Bertuch) and Emily (Rose) of Bright Yoga Space used to run retreats for us and they focus on traditional yoga, rather than Ɓņĵ͂ǰ͂ƁŠĵźź͂źʼnıĵ͂ŧŀ͂ʼnƁ˳ “With us all under the same roof, we can treat every part of the person with complişĵŠƁĝŶƠ͂şĵƁņŧıź˸͂ƚņʼnīņ͂ʼnź͂ĪĵŠĵǰ͂īʼnĝř͂Ɓŧ͂ŧƅŶ͂ clients.” ŶʼnŠ͂ʼnź͂ĝ͂ŶĵŁʼnźƁĵŶĵı͂ƠŧŁĝ͂ƁĵĝīņĵŶˮ͂ŵƅĝřʼnǰ͂ĵı͂ naturopath and nutritionist with a Bachelor of Health Science Degree majoring in naturopathy and an Advanced Diploma of Nutritional Medicine. Erin’s newest addition to the studio is an infrared sauna, which is the only one available in the area.

has more than 17 years industry experience, however, the last year has been a challenge and has led to a range of new ideas and ways to keep connected with her clients.

“During COVID, people were more focused on their mental and physical health and wanted to take a holistic approach to their health,” she said.

“During lockdowns we held online classes to keep people motivated, healthy and moving, which they said was a real godsend, especially during the second lockdown.

“With people working from home, they loved that they could concentrate on their own self-care and wellbeing as well as connect and move with others in the class, even when they couldn’t meet in person.

“We had local people joining us each week along with people from Melbourne, interstate and overseas and as a result of the posiƁʼnƙĵ͂ŀĵĵıĪĝīŗ͂ƚĵ͂ĝŶĵ͂īŧŠƁʼnŠƅʼnŠŁ͂Ɓŧ͂ŧǥ͂ĵŶ͂ŧŠ̘ line as well as in-person classes each week.”

Private, semi-private Studio Pilates and Group Mat Pilates classes are all available in the fully equipped Pilates Studio.
