Kitchen renovations tackle clutter HOME renovators are cutting the kitchen clutter, according to the 2018 Houzz Australia Kitchen Trends Study of nearly 3500 Australian homeowners.

The study found that reducing clutter was one of the top drivers among those upgrading cabinets during kitchen renovations (54 per cent).

Most popular built-in cabinet storage includes cutlery organisers (77 per cent), pullout waste or recycling cabinets (66 per cent), deep drawer organisers (58 per cent) and pot and pan organisers (40 per cent).

Renovating homeowners may be focused on decluttering in order to show off their beautiful new benchtops, which are the most common major feature upgraded during kitchen renovations (94 per cent), followed by cabinets and faucets (90 per cent and 88 per cent, respectively).

Among those upgrading their benchtops, engineered quartz is the most popular leading surface material (34 per cent).

The Houzz study also found generational differences in kitchen layout and built-in feature preferences. Six in ten renovating homeowners change the layout of their cabinets

and appliances during kitchen projects (60 per cent).

Among these homeowners, U-shaped and L-shaped layouts are the most popular (27 per cent each), though homeowners under 35 are more likely to choose an L-shaped layout than older generations (33 versus 28 and 23 per cent for those between the ages of 35 and 54 and those older than 55, respectively).

Renovating homeowners integrate built-in features like kitchen islands and pantry cabinets (46 and 41 per cent, respectively).

“Irrespective of generations, we’re seeing a continued emphasis on the kitchen as a common gathering area, with homeowners looking for ways to make the space more sleek and efficient,” said Nino Sitchinava, principal economist at Houzz.

“People are not only making kitchens larger and more open, but also choosing alternate layouts, elaborate cabinetry storage and versatile surface materials.”

The average spend on a kitchen renovation is $19,300 though homeowners are averaging $22,600 for large kitchens (10+ sq metres) and $14,600 for small kitchens (less than 10 sq metres).

Additional kitchen trends include: Style in a contemporary world: Among the 82 per cent of homeowners changing the style of their kitchen during renovations, Contemporary is by far the most popular kitchen style among Australian homeowners (29 per cent), followed by modern (26 per cent) and traditional (seven per cent).

Shades of white and grey: White continues to lead as the most likely colour for walls (59 per cent), cabinetry (59 per cent), benchtops (32 per cent) and backsplashes (37 per cent). Gray is the second most popular option, appearing on 16 per cent of walls, nine per cent of cabinetry, 22 per cent of benchtops and 15 per cent of backsplashes.

Hearts belong to hardwood: Among renovating homeowners updating flooring during kitchen projects (66 per cent), stained or unstained hardwood top the list (32 per cent), and is nearly twice as popular as ceramic or porcelain, the next most utilised material.

A recipe for technology: Renovating homeowners updating their appliances as part of their kitchen renovation, incorporate technology into their kitchen appliances with colour touchscreen displays, built-in apps with recipes, cooking tips etc. and wireless controls via smartphone or tablet.

Pro hiring: More than nine in 10 renovating homeowners hire a home professional for their kitchen project (91 per cent).

Tropical garden in an alpine setting OVER the past five years, Bright resident Lisa Buckley has established a lush and green, colourful and tropical style garden at her home.

The garden is laden with palm trees, ferns and green foliage, all creating a tropical effect that Lisa and many visitors to the property enjoy.

It also boasts a pond full of water plants, including colourful water hibiscus.

Lisa said the tropical effect of her garden “kind of happened on its own”, but said she found it to be a very relaxing space which attracts the local wildlife.

“What I like most about gardening is that I lead a very busy life and when I am in the garden, I can relax, destress, and immerse my thoughts in digging, pruning and planting and forget everything else,” she said.

Also among the range of plants in the garden are fig trees, yuccas, and cordyline, as well as many colourful annuals in pots, including hibiscus, azaleas and clematis.

Plants in the garden have come from a number of sources over the years, from a myr-

iad of local nurseries to cuttings from friends and neighbours, and even local markets.

Lisa said the garden is very low maintenance and virtually mulches itself, but she does have to keep an eye on its growth and cut it back when it begins to get out of control.

She added that her garden is very hardy and water efficient.

Lisa said her main hint for other gardeners is to not be afraid of pruning back hard, and to fertilise all the time with liquid and slow release fertilisers.

The garden, located at 7377 Great Alpine Road, Bright, is one of the open gardens that people can visit during this year’s Bright Autumn Festival (April 27-May 6).

The garden will be open during the festival from 10am-4pm daily, with a gold coin donation for entry (proceeds to be donated to Brighter Days), and the open garden will be complimented by an exhibition of the paintings of artist Thomas Lawler.

Bathrooms biggest risk for hot water scalds, burns THE bathroom is one of the most hazardous rooms in the house for babies, young children and the elderly.

This is where scalds and hot water burns can occur, as well as falls and drowning.

Victoria’s plumbing regulations, which are overseen and enforced by the Victorian Building Authority (VBA), limit heated water temperatures in bathrooms to not more than 50 degrees at the basin, bath and shower in new houses and where appropriate, in renovations.

The only exceptions to this are in premises intended for children and the elderly, such as early childhood centres, schools and nursing homes, where the heated water temperature limit is 45 degrees.

Each year in Australia, on average, around 800 people are hospitalised due to scalding from hot tap water.

Several options are available to reduce the temperature of bathroom hot water,

and they must be ďŹ tted by a registered or licensed plumbing practitioner.

They include: t 5FNQFSJOH WBMWFT – ďŹ tted to heated water pipelines to mix hot and cold water to a speciďŹ c temperature, adjustable between 35 degrees and 50 degrees; and t )PU XBUFS TIVUEPXO EFWJDFT – ďŹ tted to taps and outlets that can automatically cut off water ow once the water reaches the pre-set temperature.

It is important the temperature of household hot water limits the risk of burn injuries, however, there are other risks associated with stored hot water not being hot enough.

In 1998, Victoria passed legislation aimed at eliminating the risk of the legionella bacteria forming in storage hot water services, while still preventing scalding at hot water outlets used for bathing.

As a result, hot water must be stored at a minimum of 60 degrees to kill legionella bacteria.

To prevent scalding, this must then be reduced to no more than 50 degrees at the hot water outlets in bathrooms.

The VBA and home safety bodies advise there are many ways to protect children and the elderly from serious injury in the bathroom, including: t 6TJOH B CBUI UIFSNPNFUFS to ensure the water is a safe and comfortable temperature. Autumn great time for garden maintenance THE days are getting shorter and the nights are getting cooler.

It must be autumn, and your garden probably needs a little love about now.

Maria Wadley and the team at Wangaratta's Park Lane Nursery recommends that home gardeners have a tidy up in the vegie garden and prepare it for the new season's crops.

Pull out any old plants as well as any weeds, and if they’re hard to get out, give the garden a soak the night before.

Maria said adding compost, old cow manure, or an organic soil improver will go a long way to increasing plant vigour and cropping for the coming season.

"If you don’t have a compost heap there are excellent soil improvers available at good garden centres; Searle’s 5 in 1, or Grow Better Organic Planting Mix are fantastic for improving your soil structure," she said.

"Fork through moist soil, and mulch with

pea straw – this will reduce weed competition, evaporation, and add nitrogen to the soil."

Recommended to plant during this time are Asian greens, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbages, onions, peas, silverbeet and spinach.

A feed of organic plant food and a light trim for roses will ensure a flush of blooms for Mother’s Day. "Now is an ideal time to trim native shrubs if they have finished flowering, this keeps them from becoming woody and encourages the next flush of flowers," Maria said.

"Look for winter and spring flowering bulbs – they should start to appear in garden centres now.

NOW is a great time to beat the rush and service gas heaters before the cold weather sets in.

Energy Safe Victoria (ESV) recommends servicing all gas heaters a minimum of every two years to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning from faulty or underserviced units.

Warmer conditions are an ideal opportunity to get ahead and service heaters before the cold arrives, as many gasďŹ tters get swamped by calls to service heaters when winter arrives.

Carbon monoxide is called the silent killer because you can’t see it, taste it or smell it and it can spill from faulty gas heaters, potentially causing chronic illness or death if undetected.

All gas heaters need to be serviced by a registered gasďŹ tter a minimum of every

two years to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. “This applies to every type of gas heater including wall units, central heating units and space heaters, whether they are old or new appliances.�

Carbon monoxide can leak from gas heaters when dust or dirt builds up and ues become blocked or the combustion process does not properly occur.

GasďŹ tters have the equipment required to check for carbon monoxide spillage and maintain heaters to minimise the risk.

Find a local gasfitter and make it a habit to get your gas heater serviced regularly – this is the best way to minimise the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Baked vanilla spice cheesecake with coconut topping Ingredients 150gm plain sweet biscuits, crushed 100gm butter, melted 750gm cream cheese, softened 1 cup caster sugar 4 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon cloves 300ml carton sour cream 60gm butter, extra, melted 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup milk 1½ cups shredded coconut Assorted Easter eggs and ribbon, to decorate

Method Line the base and sides of a buttered 24cm springform pan.

Mix together the crumbs and melted butter, then press into the base of prepared pan.

Beat the cream cheese and caster sugar with an electric mixer until smooth.

Beat in the eggs until just combined, then mix in the vanilla and spices and sour cream.

Pour the mixture over the base. Bake the cheesecake at 160°C for 50 minutes.

Meanwhile, for the topping, combine extra butter, brown sugar, milk and coconut and stand for 10 minutes.

After 50 minutes baking time, sprinkle topping over the cheesecake and bake for a further 15-20 minutes or until golden.

Cool completely in the oven with the door ajar, then refrigerate for several hours or overnight.

To serve, remove the cake to a serving plate, decorate with eggs and wrap with a ribbon if desired.

Reversible table runner

THIS simple sewing DIY can help you add some extra personal avour to your dining table, whether you’re welcoming guests around for Easter, hosting a dinner party, or planning a special occasion.

You can choose fabrics to use up your stash (as I have done here), or to suit the occasion, and if you’re feeling extra festive, you could add pom pom, tassel or fringe trims to the edges of your runner when you’re pinning the hem at step 2.

Best of all, it is reversible, so you get two separate looks in one, and the measurements are completely up to you.

Method:

Cut a rectangle each from your two chosen fabrics to suit both the width and length of your table. For width, a third of the width of the table is a good rule of thumb. As far as length, it can either match the length of the table, or, if you want it to hang over, make it a few centimetres longer (but not so long that it will land in someone’s lap). My runner measured approximately 125cm long and 25cm wide, including hem allowance (roughly 1cm).

2. Pin the two rectangles together with right sides of the fabric facing, and sew around the edges of the rectangle, leaving a gap on one end about as wide as your hand.

3. Once you’ve sewn around, turn the runner inside out so the printed side of your fabric is facing out. Iron the rectangle nice and at.

4. Grab a small length of fusible webbing tape and place it carefully inside the unsewn gap, ensuring no raw fabric edges are showing, and iron the gap shut. If you prefer, you can forego the fusible tape and hand stitch the small gap closed, or just top stitch with your machine all around the edges of the runner.

Perils of buying a house with rose-coloured glasses OVER half of Australian house hunters spend the same amount of time inspecting a property as they do watching an episode via Netflix, according to new research by ME. The survey of 1000 property owners revealed that once they found their property, 58 per cent spent less than 60 minutes checking out the property they eventually purchased, despite being one of the biggest purchases of their lifetime.

Furthermore, over a quarter (26 per cent) discovered issues with their property after they purchased it.

Around 36 per cent of this group said they missed picking up these issues because they ‘fell in love with the property and overlooked them’, while 32 per cent said they ‘lacked experience and skill in inspecting the property’, and 11 per cent were simply ‘impatient and tired of looking’.

Top post-purchase problems included paintwork, construction quality, gardens and fences, and fittings and chattels.

TAKE YOUR TIME: Spending more time inspecting prospective homes can save you money and stress down the track.

Among owners who identified issues: - 74 per cent spent money fixing, replacing or improving the issues identified, or have plans to do so.

- 41 per cent would have paid less for the property had they discovered the problems earlier.

- 23 per cent experienced a degree of ‘buyer’s regret’ following the purchase.

ME head of home loans Patrick Nolan said emotions are always involved when purchasing a home, which can cloud your judgement.

“Spend more time inspecting the pro-

spective property with several return visits at different times of the day.

“See lots of properties so you can compare and contrast, give weight to any niggling hunches that give you cause for concern, and get a professional property inspector to do the checking for you.”

According to ME’s survey, around a third failed to arrange a professional building and pest inspection for the last property they purchased.

Despite some reservations among those who identified issues, a large proportion also reported to be overall happy with their decision: - 92 per cent said it was still worth buying the property despite the problems they discovered.

- Only 19 per cent said they wouldn’t have purchased the property had they discovered the issues.

- And only 14 per cent said they plan to move sooner than originally planned now they’ve discovered them.
