Getting back to nature QUIET time and a chance to feel connected to nature are what Milawa woman Fiona MacPhee enjoys most about spending time in her garden.

She has spent almost 20 years living at the property, tending and building the garden there, and said that gardening is “constantly rewarding”.

“I really just like to potter around outside,” especially during the winter months,” she said.

“You do something and you get an annual reward out of it,” she said of her garden.

“You feel like you’re doing your little bit for the planet.”

Fiona said that there was always something to see in her garden, no matter what the season, but October sees the garden bursting with colour and flowers, including wisteria, bearded irises, roses, and clematis, just to name a few.

She said that this time of year, most of her garden chores revolve around keeping the garden tidy, but she does a lot of maintenance work in winter and early spring, including pruning, mulching and fertilising, to ensure the garden thrives and looks its best during the warmer months.

Her garden also features a vegetable patch and fruit trees, and she is also working at adding more native plants.

Fiona’s garden is among several local gardens that will be open this October to help Friends of Lacluta fundraise for the school and the community gardens in Timor Leste.

The open garden day will take place on Sunday, October 14 from 10am-4pm, with the admission fee of $10 for one garden or $20 to see all three.

Delicious cakes and devonshire tea will be available at Fiona’s garden at 31 Lauriston Avenue, Milawa, along with sales for a raffle and display of school and garden project in Lacluta.

Other open gardens include: Nanno and Riki Barlagen at 20 Wards Lane, Markwood and Lorraine and Graeme Vincent at 49 Reilly Lane, Oxley.

There will also be plant sales at the Vincent garden, and coffee sales at the Barlagen garden.

CHANGES to Victoriaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s building laws came into effect on Sunday, July 1.

The reforms affect all building practitioners in Victoria, as well as some plumbing contractors and suppliers.

The new reforms are designed to achieve compliance and transparency in the building industry, as well as increased consumer protection, so that anyone engaging a building practitioner can do so with conďŹ dence.

The Victorian Building Authority is responsible for implementing these reforms through amendments to the Building Act, the Regulations and other relevant legislation.

The reforms are part of the State Governmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ongoing building industry reforms program, which started in July 2016 and will end in July 2019.

Apple waffles Ingredients: Add Ins 2 large apples, chopped into small chunks (roughly 0.5cm) 2 tablespoons butter (28gm) 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 40gm sultanas DRY 1/2 cup plain flour (60gm) 1/2 cup wholemeal flour (60gm) 2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon WET 1 cup milk (250ml) 1 egg 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 tablespoons butter, melted (28gm) Topping Sprinkle of cinnamon 1 large apple, chopped into chunks

Method: t Heat a non-stick frying pan over a medium heat and add 2 tablespoons of butter. t Allow to melt and add the chopped apple and cinnamon. t Reduce the heat, and sauté until soft (around 3 mins). Remove from the heat. t Place the sultanas in a small bowl and soak with boiling water. t Pre-heat your waffle machine. t In a large mixing bowl combine the dry ingredients. t In a separate bowl mix together the wet ingredients. t Add the wet ingredient to the dry and stir. Be careful not to over mix, some lumps are fine.

DIY European pillowcase EUROPEAN pillows are a luxurious addition to your bed or loungeroom, but even plain pillowcases for them can be expensive.

But the good news is, you can easily make pillowcases for them to match your décor.

You can buy fabric especially for this project or use something from your stash, but if you’re feeling economical, they can be a good way to reuse the good fabric sections from sheets that have worn out or torn.

They can also be made from thrifted secondhand sheets, or you can easily make cosy winter versions by using polar fleece or flannelette.

If they’re for the young ones in your life (or even just the young at heart), they can make a striking addition to their room décor if you find a patterned fabric that matches their interests.

Method 1. Cut one piece of fabric into a square 66 x 66cm (European pillow measurement of 65cm square with additional 1cm seam allowance, you can have a wider seam allowance if you wish). Then, cut another piece that is 66cm wide but make this piece 1116cm longer depending on how big you want your overlap to be (this piece will be the part that secures the pillow in place).

2. On both pieces, pin and sew a 1cm hem on the top edge. (PIC hg diy 3.jpg)

You will need: Approximately 1.5m fabric Matching thread Tape measure Sewing machine and fabric scissors/pinking shears

3. With right sides facing, pin the two pieces together, folding over the longer piece so it aligns with the hem on the short edge. Do not pin the top edge together.

4. Sew around both sides and the bottom edge, and you are done – your new pillowcase is ready to use.

Springtime in the garden

By Maria Wadley, PARK LANE NURSERY SPRING is a season of blossom, bees, butterflies, hay fever, and swooping magpies.

The days are longer and warmer so make the most of them and get into the garden.

Whether you have a large garden or a courtyard with a few pots, a vegie garden or some potted herbs, there is something we can all do out in the garden.

Plenty of vegetable and herb varieties can go in now; look out for new season’s seedlings – lettuce, spinach, broccoli, kale and peas.

If you have a glass house, you can even get in early with your tomatoes, capsicum, cucumber, zucchini, and passionfruit.

Improve the soil in your vegie garden by

adding some compost or well-rotted cow manure.

If you’re planting vegies or herbs in pots, make sure you use a good quality potting mix for good growth and tasty results.

Add some colour and interest to your garden with some of the great plants flowering now at your local nursery – rhododendrons, hebes, lavender, polygalas, leucodendrons, native wax flowers and grevilleas.

Not to mention that there are stunning magnolias and camellias in flower all around town at the moment.

Diligence in lawn care now will pay off later THE warmer weather is upon us, and after the harshness of winter it is time to give your lawn some TLC so that your yard looks its best during the spring and summer months.

Before you begin on any general lawn maintenance, it is time to get your lawn mower and other garden care items tuned up to ensure they are working at its best.

Changing the fuel, oil and spark plug can give your machine an extra bit of pep and can be a DIY job, or pop into a trusted service agent for a general tune up or to sharpen/replace blades and other parts.

You should also pull the obvious nuisance weeds on your lawn, or get advice on herbicides and other options for widespread or difficult weeds.

Aeration is also highly recommended, as it can help increase air, water and nutrients penetrating the soil as well as a number of other advantages. You can do it simply with a garden fork, or call in a specialised contractor.

Ensure the grass is literally greener on

your side of the fence by doing some light fertilising of your lawn â&#x20AC;&#x201C; donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forget to consult your local nursery or garden expert to get the right fertiliser for your soil and garden.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also a good idea to test the pH of your soil to find out what nutrients it is lacking, and address these issues as needed.

Make sure to dethatch your lawn to help promote speedy springtime growth.

You shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need to do too much watering at this time of year, but if spring weather is dry where you are, you can do some minimal watering in weeks to come.
