Colour your world in with today’s top trends yet statement-making, and can stand out or blend in with so many design styles. Place it easily with neutrals or have some fun and pair it with a bright saturated colour for a fun and energetic space. 2. RICH BRONZES While they’re a little reminiscent of the traditional country feel, the context is much more modern and industrial, which adds both drama and warmth to the space.” 3. NEUTRALS WITH POPS OF BLUE For the slightly colour-averse, many designers are bringing pops of blue into neutrals spaces for a perfect accent that never overwhelms. A neutral colour palette with pops of blue is a colour trend we’ve been seeing lately and designers are loving it. Greys, taupes, and off-whites show off and highlight the furnishings and textures within a room and a cool blue is the perfect accent.” 4. 70S MOD SQUAD As each new decade loses its distinctiveness, the iconic palettes of the past are alluring and thriving. With its rich, sunset oranges and yellows, homey browns, and comfortable denim, the
LAST year was all about bringing an edgier palette into the home, with vibrant reds, modern metallics, and variations of the statement black accent wall. Unlike 2018’s colour trends, 2019 has taken a more mindful, lifestyle-based approach to the development of new shades. From powerful aquas to soft terracottas, deep greens, and energizing corals, these colours are connecting the dots between consumers’ lives and the spaces they’re surrounded by. Whether it’s counterbalancing our fast-paced lifestyles, embracing our modern digital engagement, or simply tapping into the shift toward bolder design, these colour picks are inspired by what ultimately matters most: the people who inhabit each space. If you’re looking to dive into your home refresh by indulging in new hues, check out 2019’s top colour trends, along with how to use them in your own home now. 1. LIVE GREENS While olive green is an undeniably timeless shade, 2019 has been the year of embracing this versatile colour in interior design schemes. It’s peaceful yet rich, serene
disco decade is roaring in 2019. 5. JEWEL TONED ACCENTS In 2019, bring pops of colour into your favourite spaces with jewel-toned furniture and accents. 2018 was the year of the neutral palette, and 2019 is all about finding balance with appropriate doses of colour. Built-in bookcases painted in blues or greens create a beautiful backdrop for antique book spines. Treat a kitchen island with colour such as a marine blue while leaving perimeter cabinets in neutral white. Accenting interior doors with paint or fabric is a dynamic colour pop. 6. WOODLAND SHADES While nature is a common inspiration for home decor, in 2019 we will see a shift from oversized botanicals to the woodlands, with mushroom greys and fern-inspired colours. Mushrooms will also continue to be a key shape in the home. Their earthy colour–grey blended with warm brown–gives off an old world, naturalist feel. 7. ENERGISING CORAL It only makes sense for the 2019 colour of the year–Living Coral–to be on your radar when you begin your home revamp. We’ll be
seeing more hopeful and optimistic colours in the home, as evidenced by the recent selection of living coral as colour of the year. Instead of using coral literally, you can separate it into its orange and pink counterparts. In this windowless office converted into a little girl’s room, the mood instantly becomes energizing and uplifting. 8. SATURATED MOODY HUES These darker moody colours are perfect for custom built-ins and kitchen cabinetry; ideally suited in a room with an abundance of natural light. 9. PALE PINK COLORWAYS Pale pinks are prevailing in 2019 due to their neutral properties and compatibility with other shades. Monochromatic colours–like this pink desert sand shade–will be popular in 2019. It can be mixed with an abundance of white or a lemon yellow for the ideal look. 10. DIGITALLY INSPIRED Smart technology in the home is driving the colour experience differently. Because of this, we will see higher intensity shades that mimic the edge of artificial light in a way that is strangely familiar (and obviously gorgeous).

Top tips for a successful spring clean THE flowers are blooming, the birds are serenading, and your house still feels like it’s stuck with winter blues. Spring cleaning is a tradition that allows us to freshen up our homes and get a head start on the hectic seasons of spring and summer. CLEAN ROOM-BY-ROOM Approaching your house room-by-room is the most effective way to deep-clean your home at any time of the year, but especially in spring. Use room checklists as a springboard for deep-cleaning the areas of your home that really need extra attention. Feel free to skip items that have recently been cleaned and focus on the parts of your home that have been neglected all winter long. ORGANISE AND CLEAR THE CLUTTER One of the biggest parts of spring cleaning is getting rid of clutter that you don’t need. Now is a good time to take advantage of the natural spring urge to get rid of items that are weighing you down and begin fresh with a more streamlined lifestyle. A systematic four-step approach to identifying problems, analysing reasons, determining solutions, and implementing remedies can be extremely productive at this time of year. Sorting your belongings into four categories—trash, give-away, store, or put-way—can also be effective as you begin the spring-cleaning process. Now is a great time to plan a garage sale or to donate items to good causes. Cleaning will be a lot easier when the clutter is gone. GET THE FAMILY INVOLVED If you need a little help in your cleaning endeavors, get your family involved. Even the most unwilling helper can make a big difference in the workload. Don’t worry: There are ways to deal with even the most reluctant helpers. This is actually a great time of year to get the entire family to work together. Try throwing on some music or establishing a family reward as an incentive to get the work done.
TACKLE THE SEASONAL CHORES There are some special chores that need to be done seasonally. We ignore them for most of the autumn and winter, but now it is time to bite the bullet and get these things clean. Even though these chores only need to be done once or twice a year, they will help your home look better and run smoothly. Outdoor chores like cleaning grills, patios, and windows can be a little intimidating, but there are some simple tricks that can keep the jobs manageable. KEEP CLEANING PRODUCTS TO A MINIMUM The cleaning aisles of our stores are stocked full of commercial products to help you clean, but the variety can be overwhelming. And dozens of cleaning products means dozens of cleaning products to clutter up your cabinets and closets. Resist the temptation to buy all these cleaning supplies; the real champions of spring cleaning are more basic supplies, such as a good all-purpose cleaner and microfibre cloths. There are even homemade cleaners you can make that will save you money while protecting the environment. ESTABLISH NEW CLEANING HABITS A good, thorough spring cleaning that includes the whole house is a great time to establish new on-going cleaning habits, and it can also make the next spring cleaning a good deal easier. Simple 15-minute clean-up routines practised every few days, each including a series of 1- to 2-minute chores, can make it remarkably easy to keep your home clean and tidy all year long.

The secret to a quick sale By Michelle Slot HEAD STYLIST #MulberryLaneTips NO matter what is happening to the Real Estate market, when you want to sell your home there are two simple rules to follow to assure a quick sale: 1. PRICE IT WELL; and 2. MAKE IT LOOK AMAZING. Selling or buying a property is possibly one of
the biggest investments anyone could make. How a property is presented should be given as much importance and consideration as any consumer product on the market. One of the costliest mistakes made by home sellers is to ignore the visual psychology involved in gaining a buyer’s immediate attention. Potential buyers become interested in a property when they walk in and feel ‘I could live here’.
1. CLEAR IT OUT: De-clutter and Pare down. This means that you need to detach as much of “you” from your property to allow someone new to attach themselves, ensuring they have an emotional connection. Removing your “day-to-day” clutter and personal items means putting away toothbrushes, toilet brushes, photos and excess memorabilia. Remove excess furniture to ‘open up’ a room to make it seem more spacious. The more in a room, the less we process. When there is too much to see, we don’t see anything. 2. POSITION FURNITURE: Traffic Flow & Focal points. Positioning furniture is crucial for traffic flow. The buyer should feel that they don’t have to manoeuvre themselves around the couch to get to the kitchen bench or step over a chair to go outside. Try not to use
They imagine it as their home, there is an emotional connection. One of the best proven methods to faster sales is a process called “Staging” or “Property Styling”. It is a relatively new concept to regional Victoria but used frequently in the major cities of Melbourne and Sydney. The key to any well-presented property is to maximise its potential, therefore using the five following basic rules will accentuate
the TV as the focal point - even though it’s an important part of our day to day lives the buyer will feel more at home if the focal point is a beautiful piece of artwork above an inviting sofa. 3. UNIFY YOUR COLOURS: Use consistent colours throughout. A house will tend to feel confused and unbalanced visually when there is too much going on and too many colors. By selecting one main wall colour you eliminate the rainbow effect. Try not to use strong colors as it is best to presume that your choice will not necessarily appeal to all buyers and can override a room visually. 4. ADD SOME GREENERY: Fresh is best. Nothing freshens up a room more effectively than greenery. Add a pot plant that is lush and green to your front door entrance. Add seasonal flowers to your
what you already have with your property’s features and design, or if your home is empty staging companies can supply all your furniture through conceptualisation techniques to stimulate the buyer’s visual acuity. 1. CLEAR IT OUT. 2. POSITION FURNITURE. 3. UNIFY YOUR COLOURS. 4. LIGHTING. 5. GREENERY.
dining table – remembering your colour scheme. Also add little pockets of flowers and herbs to side tables in bedrooms or on vanities, kitchen benches to freshen the main living areas of the home. Do not forget to remove dead plants/flowers, if you are time poor then consider purchasing faux plants. 5. LIGHTING: Light it up with Ambience. Lighting is the finishing touch to create a beautiful ambience to any interior. It is well worth investing in a floor lamp for your living and dining rooms, as well as side lamps in all your bedrooms. All existing lights should have working bulbs – even the range hood. In all, the property must be at its best, so when the photographer takes those photos for your sales campaign you know that you have presented your property to its fullest potential.

Outdated home trends we hope will never come back WHETHER it’s hair or furniture, we’ve all made trendy choices that we regretted later on. From wood panelling to tile countertops and floral couches draped in lace, we’ve looked through some of the biggest home trends of decades past that might just make you cringe now (including a few that aren’t so obvious). Be honest: How many of these outdated trends have made an appearance in your home? TILE COUNTERTOPS Tile countertops were all the rage in the 1970s, but if you’d like to keep your space current, it’s best to leave this trend behind. Plus, it’s difficult to clean, so avoid the stress and stick with marble or granite. SHAG CARPET We know, we know. Shag carpets feel wonderful underfoot, but they miss the mark when it comes to making a space look stylish. Stick to low-pile carpets for a more modern aesthetic. WOOD PANELLING It might have been fabulous in the 70s, but in 2019, avoid wood panelling at all costs.
GOOD IDEA AT THE TIME: Bean bag chairs did not always prove as comfortable as they appeared.
It typically makes a room look dreary and dated, and nobody should settle for this type of environment. WORD ART There’s no shortage of wood art at home decor stores, but that doesn’t mean it’s the best choice for your home. Rather than settle for a generic piece of word art,
take the time to choose something more meaningful that speaks to your aesthetic. TUFTED HEADBOARDS Tufted furniture is centuries old, but it no longer has the glam feel it once did. Now, it just looks a little stuffy—and if you want a statement headboard, why not commit to something that actually makes a statement
(instead of blending in with your mattress)? BEAN BAG CHAIRS Oh, hello 90s. Though this may have been a handy chair to eat a slice of pizza in between college courses, it should never leave a dorm room. Still, that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice comfort: Try one of these cosy reading chairs instead. FAKE FRUIT Although there was something satisfying about pinching those rubber grapes throughout the 90s, the dust that collected on them wasn’t as fun. Faux has been traded for fresh with the growing popularity of eating green and shopping local farmer’s markets. FLORAL EVERYTHING The 80s loved florals, and that meant putting the pattern on just about everything. In modern design, florals are more thoughtfully used as accent patterns. WINDOW VALANCES There’s something about valances that makes a space look like it’s decades behind. To add a modern focal point to a room, opt for floor-length or pooled drapes. Time to colour your world By MARIA WADLEY Park Lane Nursery IF you enjoy the outdoors, then the recent sunny days will probably have you itching to get into the garden – and why not? It’s such a beautiful time of year – new leaves emerging on the deciduous trees, flowering trees and shrubs bursting into bloom, bees getting busy, magpies swooping – there’s so much to enjoy! There’s plenty to keep you going in your little (or large) patch of the world. Start by refreshing the soil in your vegetable and ornamental gardens. Adding organic matter is the best, and fastest, way to improve your soil structure. Compost, or aged cow manure are best for this, however there are some excellent commercial soil improvers available from your local Nursery – so call in and ask the experts. Mulching now will save you a lot of work down the track, and provide the best growing environment for your plants – keeping weeds at bay, and increasing water retention in your soil. Now for the fun part – planting! So many beautiful choices for the garden
are available now – from the gorgeous flowering cherries and pears, to shrubs and low growing plants like grevilleas, hardenbergia, flowering currants, lavender, hebe, boronias, wax flowers and so many more. There are lots of plants grown for their beautiful foliage rather than their flowers – heucheras come in a range of colours and are great for brightening up shady spots in the garden or in pots, leucadendron are known for their colourful bracts, and make fantastic cut flowers. Now is also a great time to get the vegie garden going - plant the following: Asian and salad greens, beans, rhubarb crowns, peas, silver beet, and onions. If you have a greenhouse, you can also get a head start on your tomatoes, pumpkin, basil, eggplant, and zucchini. If you’re not into gardening, then you can you can always just find a nice sunny spot to sit and relax with a lovely cup of tea. Happy gardening.. TIME FOR ACTION: Spring is the perfect time to plant in your garden. Low growing plants like hardenbergia and wax flowers (pictured) are a popular choice.

Household hazards hiding in plain sight THEY’RE useful under normal circumstances, but ordinary products like hand gel, toilet discs and vaporisers can prove dangerous for kids with curious tastebuds. “Most families are focused on ensuring their toddlers cannot get their hands on medications and chemicals, and rightly so,” Queensland Poisons Information Centre manager Carol Wylie said. “However, many household products that may seem otherwise innocuous can also be harmful to the health of their children. “They can’t be overlooked. “We get at least one call a day from parents whose children have tried to consume gel discs in toilets. “Many of these products contain cleaning agents that could make a child sick. “We also regularly get calls about toddlers swallowing antiseptic hand gel, which are typically alcohol-based. “Toddlers often pluck bottles of the gel out of handbags or off benches and they can become ill if they ingest the contents. “Dishwashing and laundry detergents can also be a problem.” The fluid used in steam vaporisers, which are used to ease nasal congestion, also posed hazards for youngsters. Care should be taken to ensure children cannot get to these devices – not only can they cause burns, but the liquids or oils used can cause illness if consumed, especially gastric issues. People with small children should carefully check their home to ensure potentially harmful products and substances are out-ofreach, locked away or, if they are no longer needed, properly disposed of. Places where children regularly visit, such as grandparents’ homes, should also be checked.
Symptoms associated with exposure to items such as hand gels, toilet discs and vaporiser liquids varied but the signs to heed include: stomach upsets and vomiting; coughing; listlessness; changes in breathing
or heart rates; and rash or itchy eyes. The most important thing is for parents to remain calm and seek advice by calling the Poisons Information Centre on 131 126 if an exposure occurs or is suspected.
KEEP THEM SAFE: Parents, grandparents and other guardians need to remain vigilant for household products that can harm children.
