FUNCTION VENUES

Get the most from your venue By KARA SMITH, Sebel Pinnacle Valley Resort

TRUST YOUR VENUE Choosing the perfect wedding or event venue isn’t just about the perfect location, its being conďŹ dent that your venue will work with you. Choosing your venue can be the most important decision when planning. Find a venue that is going to work with you without adding zero’s to your budget when plans change. Visit the venue, meet the team, taste the food, try the service and put them to the test. Look for a venue where the attitude is “nothing is too hard to achieveâ€? and that will go above and beyond to ensure you shine and your event is a complete sucess.

YOU’RE THE HOST NOT THE BABYSITTER Always remember that you are the host, not the babysitter. You have worked hard in the months leading up to your event/wedding. You don’t need to deal with your guests teething problems. Guests accommodation? Guests personal dislikes? They don’t know what to wear? Let them ďŹ nd their own solutions. Be organised and include lots of information with the invitations and let your guests plan their own unique experience.

DON’T FLOAT AWAY WITH THE BUBBLES IN YOUR HEAD You want to remember your day and look back on all the stunning images of you looking your best. This is why we recommend not oating away with the bubbles. Stay focused and happy with a glass or two in your hand, remember to take a moment with each guest but don’t drown yourself in the bottle.

The Stables - Sebel Pinnacle Valley Resort, Merrijig.

YOUR MC SHOULDN’T JUST BE THE FUNNIEST OR MOST CONFIDENT PERSON YOU KNOW‌ Your MC should be someone that you trust and respect to make sure that your running sheet is maintained through the entire day. They need to be conďŹ dent and able to communicate with not only you but also the venue manager (as they are in charge once the days starts). They need to oversee all those important elements like speeches, cake cutting, and your ďŹ rst dance – making sure they aren’t missed.

REMEMBER THAT LESS IS MORE Choose a storyline and stick with it. Select one style/theme and stick to it. Rustic? Vintage? White Glamour or Pop? Find a colour that suits this theme and stick to it, from invitations through to the reception and thank you cards.

FUNCTION VENUES

Midweek helps plan and budget

W

hen most people think of weddings, they picture a Saturday night or weekend event. But if you consult with those closest to you, and plan well enough, a midweek wedding can save you money and possibly offer you more choices with your venue or service providers. For example, booking most popular venues for a Saturday can be a competitive business, as many are booked out months in advance, if not more, but if you aim for an alternative date during the week, there would be far fewer other bookings to compete with. You might find that your costs could also be lower if you book a venue for a midweek date, and some service providers might be willing to strike a bargain for you.

Some suppliers will also have more choice of products or colours for you, to help give you more options for your big day. And often, without the competition of weekend crowds, your wedding atmosphere will probably be more relaxed. The main thing to consider in this planning is if a midweek wedding will suit you and your needs, and also if your loved ones and wedding party can ensure they have the time off from their jobs or other commitments in plenty of time. This is especially true for those who will need to travel from interstate or overseas. In this regard, be organised or send out your invitations at least 8 months out from your special event to ensure plenty of planning leeway.

The Mill Inn Restaurant is a truly unique location for your wedding or special event. Parties from 10-100 people... the more the merrier. Bar, catering or formal dining options available. Don’t forget, we rock a very mean authentic SPANISH PAELLA 5777 5868

Pip & Tayler ROWE

W

hen Pip Rowe got married, it was minus four degrees and she didn’t have a jacket. Her gorgeous white lace dress was crisp against the snowy background and the cold winter’s day was everything she had hoped for. Pip and Tayler had wanted a white wedding from the moment they got engaged. “I have been obsessed with the snow since I was born,” Pip explained. “Tayler went to America for a trip and when he got back, we just decided we wanted to get married, and we wanted to get married in the snow.” Although it took the couple four years to finalise plans and get everything right, the final day was worth every delay. “It snowed during our ceremony, it couldn’t have been more perfect,” she said. “It was a long wait, four years, but it was amazing.” The Rowes invited their friends

to spend a week at Dinner Plain - to capitalise on the snow, the atmosphere and the wedding celebration. But just 24 hours before the wedding, Pip thought her dream was about to come crashing down. “We put so much time into choosing a date and time - we wanted people to be able to come for a holiday, and we had friends flying in internationally,” she said. “I wasn’t a bride who was worried about a cold day, that was exactly what I wanted. “But the day before there was torrential rain, and 100 kmh winds. “There was no snow left the evening before we were due to be married - but during our rehearsal dinner, at 9pm, it started to snow.” The next day, Pip and Tayler were able to take their vows in a winter wonderland - exactly as they had always wanted. “We were lucky - the day ended up perfect.”

Traditions to hold on to

N

o matter how unconventional the wedding, there are some time honoured traditions that still usually make an appearance on the day. They have been part of wedding ceremonies for countless years, and whether you choose to incorporate every idea, or just one or two, they add a lovely touch to a special day. Chief among these is the “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, tradition. The tradition dates back centuries and wearing a combination of items fitting these descriptions on your wedding day is thought to bring good luck to brides. Horseshoes are another part of wedding tradition. A time honoured good luck symbol – not just at

weddings – horseshoes, featuring in jewellery or small favours that guests bring to the bride, help get the marriage off to an auspicious start. Flowers are also an essential part of most weddings. The use of f lowers in weddings reportedly dates back to the ancient Greeks, where f lowers would be worn as a wreath on the head. In the middle ages, f lowers were used to mask the odours of the wedding party - as proper bathing happened only a few times a year. To find out more about these and other wedding traditions, check your favourite wedding website, or just ask one of your relatives.

Married in the High Country Ben & Renee GOODWIN

B

en and Renee Goodwin met like DATE: all good country couples do: in VENUE: a pub. PHOTOGRAPHER: Ben, who is Irish, was working in a hotel in Ireland when he first laid eyes FLORIST: on country girl Renee. WEDDING CAKE: Ever since that first meeting, he has been smitten. BRIDAL MAKEUP: Both Renee and Ben are simple, HAIR: country people. They take pride in their down to earth approach to life, and their ability to have fun in any situation. So when Ben proposed on Grand Final Day in 2014 – on the foreshore in Yarrawonga – they knew they wanted a simple, classic wedding that would allow them to feel at home with their family and friends. “We wanted somewhere that we could make a weekend of it, spend time with our friends and just relax, while celebrating our wedding at the same time,” Renee explained. Renee works with horses, and always has done. Although she moonlights in real estate, her real passion is working with thoroughbreds. It was her work with horses that first attracted her to Mansfield. “We aren’t from Mansfield, but I had been up that way a lot for horse shows and competitions,” she explained. “I knew as an area it was a beautiful spot, and had the

right country atmosphere we were going for – but we just needed to find somewhere to base ourselves where we could have everything in the one spot.” Renee and Ben decided to get married at one of Mansfield’s premier resort and conference centre’s – The Sebel. “We went and checked it out and it was exactly what we were after – somewhere where it would all be provided on site, we didn’t have to leave the resort, and we could stay for the weekend and enjoy ourselves,” Renee said. “It was also the right atmosphere, with the bush location and the beautiful grounds.” Ben, who is an old fashioned gentleman at heart – he asked Renee’s dad for permission before he asked his bride to be – got married in a classic black suit with vest and tie. Renee, who chose grey as her colour palette, was beautiful in a strapless gown overlaid in lace, complete with flowing veil and elegant shoes. “The wedding was perfect, I wouldn’t change a thing,” Renee said. And now, six months on, life has returned to normal for the Goodwins. But that one day in April will stand out for Renee and Ben for as long as they live – the day they celebrated their love with family and friends in Mansfield’s High Country. CELEBRANTS

Speech making a personal affair

T

here are few people in this world that are not undaunted by those two little words, “public speaking, especially when it comes to creating a perfect speech for a wedding reception. Whether you are the MC, a parent of the bride or groom or a member of the wedding party, it can be overwhelming to try and create a wedding speech that is equal parts factual, loving, and funny. During a wedding reception, the order of speeches traditionally goes as follows – a speech from the MC, a word from the father of the bride, speeches from the bride, groom and best man, and then back to the MC. But this is not set in stone – other relatives of the bride and groom, additional members of the wedding party, or another wedding guest may wish to say their piece. The key to keeping the ceremony moving and ensuring everyone is

happy is to lock down the order and rough duration of speeches in advance and ensure everyone is well rehearsed. Keep in regular contact with all involved in the time leading up to the wedding, whether by phone calls, emails or even something as simple as social media messages, and good communication should help smooth out any problems before they begin. Helping ensure a good f low of events for the reception is one of the key functions of the MC, and providing everyone plays their part, the reception should go off without a hitch. If you have to speak or give a speech, make sure to be prepared – but not robotic or speaking in a monotone – and ensure whatever you say comes from a place of genuine emotion, and there will be few in the crowd who can doubt your love and sincerity for the happy couple.

FLOWERS & ACCESSORIES

Invitations require thought

W

hatever style you decide to have your wedding invitations can help convey to your guests not only your own personal style, but a little bit of what they can expect on your wedding day. As long as you have the pertinent time, date, location and RSVP information on your invitation, the sky really is the limit (depending on your budget, of course). The elements of the invitation can match any element of your day – from the colour scheme to the overall theme, and can run the gamut from formal and luxe in appearance to colourful and quirky. An unusual medium for your invitation – such as fabric or thin wood – can make your invitation stand out – but make sure the size and materials chosen are still within your budget and can be posted relatively cheaply. Invitations resembling postcards, especially if they have a magnet attached – are a great idea to ensure your invitation does not get lost in the barrage of post received by the average household. Timing is also an important issue when you are sending your invitations. Do not start inviting people too early, or they may put down your invitation and forget, but don’t leave your invitation ordering and posting to the last minute either, as in today’s increasingly busy world, many people have commitments in their diaries months in advance and also may need time to organise accommodation, babysitters and/ or transport.

As with any written item, attentive proof reading is an absolute must. Misspelling important names (especially your in-laws to be) is a faux pas that might take a long time to live down, and misspelling location names or other parts of the invitation can also be a little embarrassing. If having a strict dress code is important to you, it is best to ensure that this is also spelled out on the invitation, especially if it includes a colour or style theme. Don’t forget to include a separate RSVP card with the invitation that prospective guests can easily fill out indicating their ability to attend and (if applicable) whether their partners or children will be accompanying them.

These days there are lots of online businesses set up to assist you setting up a gift registry. ith wedding photos set to last you the rest of your life, and all eyes focused on you on the big day, looking your best at your wedding is a high priority for most brides (and, increasingly, grooms and wedding party members). Looking happy, rested, glowing and healthy is all a matter of getting into healthy habits and taking time out to maintain your outward appearance. And it can begin to take place as early as six months before the wedding. At this point, it can be a good idea to assemble your go to beauty team, including hair and makeup artists/ salons, skin specialists, nail and waxing experts, and more. Checking their availability further down the track is also essential. Get a good start on a healthy eating plan and staying hydrated, and consider having some treatments early as your skin needs time to rejuvenate. Starting or maintaining a regular

crunch time, and is especially a good time to conduct hair trials, spray tan test runs and more for the big day. Keep your hair in good shape by getting a final haircut or trim, as well as touches for your colour or highlights, so your hair is settled in for the wedding day. In the days approaching your wedding, last minute maintenance and touch ups are key. Well prepared brides also benefit from having a wedding day kit on hand, including lipstick, bobby pins, powder, breath mints and other items essential for touch ups. On the day before, get a manicure and make sure hands are well moisturised and taken care of, and a massage/relaxing bath can combat last minute nerves. On the day, leave plenty of preparation time, relax, follow your beauty rituals and remember just to enjoy yourself.

hether it’s the artistry and romance of wedding photos, or family members having fun in a photobooth at reception, photographs play an integral role in every wedding. While getting the traditional family photographs and loving couple photos are still on the wedding photography agenda, many couples like to add some fun and whimsy to their wedding photo agenda. Some particularly imaginative couples pose some of their wedding couples so it looks like they are part of a bigger adventure (which is photoshopped in later), such as running from dinosaurs or a zombie horde. Photos showing off fun elements of wedding outfits (such as matching sneakers, superhero t-shirts under suits,

coloured petticoats) or reversing the genders of traditional wedding photos (such as groomsmen admiring the groom’s ring) can also show off your personality. Incorporating photographs into your reception is also an easy way to personalise the occasion. Photographs of loved ones, particularly those no longer with you, add a touching element to a reception table and helps make them part of your day. To capture even more memories of your day, include a photobooth with a fun background and/or props, leave disposable cameras on the tables for guests to have fun with, and encourage social media users to use a common hashtag (and let you know where they’ve posted the photos).

Get creative with pre wedding events There are now so many options for a fun bucks or hens event.

F

or modern brides and grooms to be, their hens and bucks night need not take the well-trodden path of pub crawls and naughty novelty dress ups (unless of course, that is what they want). These days, more and more people are realising that there are as many ways to celebrate as there are couples, and the sky is the limit when it comes to creative ideas for pre wedding events.

For some, trading risquĂŠ party games for the excitement and adrenaline of adventure sports such as paintball are on the cards, or even stirring up their competitive spirit at the nearest bowling alley, golf course (mini or traditional), laser tag, go karting, and more. An easy and less expensive crowd pleaser is a night spending card games (either poker or some of the more outrageous comedy card games on the market), a well catered and luxurious movie night, or video games can also be a winner. Discerning grooms to be might prefer spending time appreciating craft beer or wine at an event organised at their nearest brewery or winery, while some brides might enjoy spending time together taking part in social activities such as high teas or organised shopping trips, or meditation and yoga retreats. Wedding preparations themselves could also form part of the pre wedding celebrations, such as participating in physical training sessions, dancing lessons, or spa days. Even if your plans are fairly traditional, you can liven up the celebrations by choosing a theme, whether it be wearing certain colours, choosing a period specific theme such as The Great Gatsby, 1950s or 1980s, dressing up as fictional characters, wearing wigs, and more. Bucks and hens celebrations need not just be one night, either, with more and more brides and grooms organising weekends away with their closest friends and relatives. The choices for weekends are endless, from beach and countryside getaways to spending weekends glamping, camping and hiking, or even just hiring group accommodation and spending a lazy few days together doing whatever you please. If your bucks and hens like exercising their minds and their sense of competition, specially tailored scavenger hunts are a great option. Just remember, while there is plenty of scope to have fun, it is not mandatory to do outrageous or naughty things for your bucks or hens event if you do not want to.

auren and Richard Hunter are DATE: never more at home than when LOCATION: they are in the mountains. FLOWERS: Although the couple live and PHOTOGRAPHER: work in Melbourne, when Richard CELEBRANT: finally popped the question there TRANSPORT: was no doubt it would be an Alpine environment for their wedding. So it was that they married in the early Autumn at Mirimbah Park, with their buffet style reception held under a beautiful white tent. “We met in Canada, and have always loved the mountains,” Lauren explained. “Buller is our home away from home, so we knew straight away that was where we wanted to be married. “We also wanted to be married somewhere that we could all stay together, rather than Richard and I being separated off from everyone else.” Like so many couples, the Hunters wanted their invited guests to get the most out of the experience. So, choosing to be married on a Friday, they timed the event for the weekend of the Bike Buller Festival and Picnic in the Park at Mirimbah. “We wanted to make a weekend of it, not just for ourselves but for everyone,” Lauren said. The wedding ceremony itself was a natural affair, with a silver and grey palette accented by tones of red. Lauren was after a relaxed, natural feel and chose a

dress that was Greek Goddess inspired with a f loral crown. “We wanted quite a natural feel for the wedding, so we had lots of natives in the bouquets and maple leaves,” she said. “Because we were after that relaxed feel, we chose to get married in the park at Mirimbah – it’s a really beautiful place for a ceremony.” Lauren and Richard had originally planned a helicopter ride to Craig’s Hut for their photo’s, but bad weather and heavy smoke meant they instead f lew to Sheepyard Flat. “I think when being a bride, the most important piece of advice is just to roll with it on the day,” Lauren said. “We were supposed to have pictures at Craig’s Hut, but it wasn’t possible on the day, so instead we f lew somewhere else. “At the time, I was worried because there was a lot of back-burning going on so there was heavy smoke in the air – but that smoke has made our wedding photo’s look incredible, so it actually worked out really well.” Looking back on the day, Lauren said those few hours away with husband Richard was the best part of her wedding celebration. “The helicopter ride, then our time doing the pictures, was just a chance to take a step back and take a breath – just what we needed on such a busy day.” March 6 Mirimbah Park Alpine Blooms Boss Photography Diane Storey Alpine Helicopter Charter
